Learning Objective: Discuss methods that increase leadership skills
The quality of an organization’s leadership and management is critical to its success. This is true at team, department, and organizational levels. However, what’s the secret to that quality? How do you ensure it throughout the organization? How do you become an excellent leader and manager yourself? As with any professional skills, the skills of leadership and management can be learned and practiced. This course is specifically designed to help you do just that, whatever your role in the organization.
At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:
a. Understand the skills needed to be a successful leader.
b. Understand ways to manage staff performance.
c. Evaluate their own style.
d. Develop skills that help deliver their objectives.
Leadership involves influencing people to achieve organizational goals through vision, followership, and inspiration. Good leaders share a vision for the future, lead change efforts, inspire people, and serve as role models of honesty, empowerment, and competence. There are different leadership styles such as autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire that are based on the level of authority. Key leadership skills include communication, motivation, creativity, positivity, feedback, and the ability to develop others. Leaders can improve their skills by volunteering for new tasks, teaching others, understanding their strengths and weaknesses.
Followership refers to the capacity or willingness to follow a leader. Effective followership is important for any group or organization to succeed. Followers can develop skills valuable for future leadership through consciously managing their relationship with their direct superiors. Followers want opportunities for growth, clarity of direction, frequent feedback, and protection from organizational intrusions from their leaders, while leaders want followers who have a "make it happen" attitude, willingness to collaborate, motivation to learn, and passion for self-improvement. There are different styles of followership including effective, passive, alienated, conformist, and pragmatic survivors.

Volunteering and joining associations are decisions driven by values, meaning, and affiliation. In today's people-driven economy powered by social media and collaboration, member-led and decentralized organizations that focus on co-creation and net promoter scores are designing their future. The science of association is always evolving to remain relevant.

As the charity sector continues to manage the impact of the pandemic, many charities are facing financial uncertainty. In this context many senior leaders, to ensure their charity’s sustainability, will be considering collaboration and merger. In this webinar, in association with Bates Wells, we aim to answer questions such as: When should a charity in crisis consider merging? What are the alternatives? How can you make the best decision for your organisation? You will also hear about a new online decision-making tool which will help organisations chart the options open to them in a tight financial spot.
Normal working practices have changed dramatically in a very short period. Most staff are still working remotely, and many organisations have made use of the furlough scheme. This has meant organisations are having to manage and support staff remotely; review some existing policies to ensure they are still fit for purpose; and manage with a reduced and rotating staff capacity. In partnership with our Trusted Supplier Croner, in this webinar we will be sharing good practice on managing and supporting staff in this new environment. We will be joined by Vicky Scott, Operations and HR Manager at Hackney CVS who will share the experiences and learnings of Hackney CVS in this new context.
The economic impact of coronavirus means that many voluntary sector organisations will be going through a period of significant change over the coming months. For many of the hardest hit charities, the process of restructuring and making redundancies will sadly be inevitable. In this webinar we help organisations prepare for this context.

The document summarizes key findings from the UK Civil Society Almanac 2020. It finds that while the number of organizations has remained stable in recent years, most are small with incomes under £100k. Total charity income and assets have grown but more slowly in recent years, with the public now the main income source versus government. Reserves are back to pre-2008 crisis levels but reductions in investments could threaten financial fragility. The paid workforce has reached 900,000 but is likely to decrease, while formal volunteering rates have remained stable though changing in form. The document outlines implications and practical support available for charities during the current challenges.

HR search is critical to a company's success because it ensures the correct people are in place. HR search integrates workforce capabilities with company goals by painstakingly identifying, screening, and employing qualified candidates, supporting innovation, productivity, and growth. Efficient talent acquisition improves teamwork while encouraging collaboration. Also, it reduces turnover, saves money, and ensures consistency. Furthermore, HR search discovers and develops leadership potential, resulting in a strong pipeline of future leaders. Finally, this strategic approach to recruitment enables businesses to respond to market changes, beat competitors, and achieve long-term success.

Editor's Notes
Been asked to talk about my own leadership journey and also to look at my experience of developing leadership at a local levelUntil recently I have had most of my leadership in students’ unions, as chief executive and Deputy chief executiveIn 2011 I was successful in being appointed Clore Social Fellow and embarked on Clore Social Leadership Programme – this is a leadership development programme . CSLP is offers fully-funded Fellowships tailored to meet the individual development needs of aspiring leaders in the social sector. It includes 360 degree assessments, residential events, action learning, secondment, coaching and mentoring and practice-based research
I wanted to share this picture that I was asked to do as part of a coaching exercise on Clore. It shows that for a good part of my career there were lots of highs, until I became a general manager for the first time. This was a really difficult time for me and I left after 2 years feeling that I had failed – this feeling stayed with me, effected my career choices and last for 10 years.I felt that I had failed as a leader, that I couldn’t be the leader that I saw around me – charismatic, hierarchical, maverick (Goffee & Jones Why should anyone be led by you?)I wanted to use the CSLP opportunity to find out whether I could be a leader and what my own person leadership style was – to me this felt like looking for the holy grail, something that would unlock my own potential.
In search of the holy grail – my personal leadership style – who am I? What is important to me?Development & self discovery – all helped me to understand more about myself and where I wanted to go360 degree feedbackMentoring – Brand wheelCoaching – be kind to your selfFormal and informal learning – Action Learning, mediation and mindfulness, learning log, work shadowing, secondment
Found an acceptance of past achievements, strengths, blending work and non work lifeStill have self doubt but formed mechanisms and approaches and network of support and challenge
Part of CSLP I conducted research which examined the strengths of the student movement and the mutual benefits from enhancing the relationship between students’ unions and the wider voluntary sectorSM – excellent building leadership capacity by providing opportunities to students, helping them to recognise their achievement and to articulate it“students’ unions are just… an unbelievable opportunity to make mistakes”“what [it] gives you… is the opportunity to do things at a stage in your career that you would never get to do anywhere else”Part of national movementComparatively good resourcesDevelopment one of course principlesCurrent organisation – East Herts Citizens AdviceVery small - £300k turnover, 100 volunteers, 8 FTE staff, across large district (184 sq miles) in HertfordshirePart of national network of around 350 CAB in England and Wales, and national association – Citizens AdviceFew resources to dedicate to leadership development – but similar approach – giving people the opportunities then through internal coaching help them recognise and articulate. Informal learning like shadowing and coaching used more then formal developmental programmes – although they are available
