Evil-Revivalist Concept Of Evil
Philosophers have debated what evil is since the beginning of philosophy. Is evil an innate
characteristic in some people, or is evil simply a blanket term used to describe actions caused by
outside influences, e.g. upbringing, circumstance, or mental illness? What is the nature of evil?
There are two main sects of opinion for philosophers when it comes to evil: evil–skeptics and evil–
revivalists (Calder). Evil–skeptics believe that we should abandon the concept of evil. Evil–skeptics
are of the opinion that the concept of evil is problematic and should be abandoned, while other
moral concepts, such as right, wrong, good, and bad, are necessary. On the other hand, evil–
revivalists believe that the concept of evil has a place in society. Evil–skeptics have three main
points in why the concept of evil should be abandoned, as Todd Calder illustrates in "The Concept
of Evil": Evil–skeptics give three main reasons to abandon the concept of evil: (1) the concept of
evil involves unwarranted metaphysical commitments to dark spirits, the supernatural, or the devil;
(2) the concept of evil is useless because it lacks explanatory power; and (3) the concept of evil can
be harmful or dangerous when used in moral, political, and legal contexts, and so, it should not be
used in those contexts, if at all. (Calder) Prior to WWII, there was very little philosophical literature
pertaining to the concept of evil; however, philosophers have considered the nature and origins of
evil in the broad sense since ancient times (Calder). One theory on the origin of evil is called
Manichaean dualism. As Calder describes in "The Concept of Evil": According to Manichaean
dualism, the universe is the product of an ongoing battle between two coequal and coeternal first
principles: God and the Prince of Darkness...The Manichaean solution to the problem of evil is that
God is neither all–powerful nor the sole creator of the world. God is supremely good and creates
only good things, but he or she is powerless to prevent the Prince of Darkness from creating evil.
(Calder) One main problem with Manichaean dualism is that, for a theist, it is hard to accept the
concept that God is not the all–powerful creator he is thought to be. For that

Bogeyman Descriptive Writing
Darkness The small pieces of gravel cut deep into my skin as I skidded along the ground away from
the cabin. I gave the figure standing in the darkness of the doorway a vicious glance. I felt the pain
growing on my knees and my cheek. My bright blue eyes started to fill with tears and what was my
sleek, smooth brown hair was messed up and dirty. I was always teased for my fear of the bogeyman
and the dark. I got my fear when something was moving under my bed in the middle of the night
and my brother said it was the bogeyman. So ever since I have been petrified at night of the
bogeyman. When I arrived to camp my class had the talk. The don't feed the animals, no walking

I thought it was a good idea but I was wrong that bush was poison ivy as a frantically wiped my
nose with the leaves I realised that. My nose started swelling with such speed I could only see from
the sides away from the nose. My screams attracted a black and white figure. I started to scream
even louder It was the bogeyman I thought. I was terrified the figure was so scary it could scare the
wings off a fly. Then I heard a noise that no bogeyman would make, a noise that a raccoon makes.
Raccoons I thought, why are they after me. They looked cute at first then up close they became feral
monsters. I ran for my life. They started to chase me from on top of the old dying trees I felt a stone
hit the top of my head. The raccoons were dropping things on my head, on the bright side, I thought
at least these aren't monkeys, they would be throwing something else. I could hear a creek in the
distance. If I ran to it I could dive in and they lose my scent. As the gushing water became louder I
noticed how long I had been out here it was almost pitch black. I could see the river flowing towards
the camp, I jumped in to the river. It chilled me to the bone. Then as my head popped out of the
water I could see the majestic sun rise. And with the night my fear was now

Argumentative Essay On Black Licorice
The US Food and Drug Administration warned on Monday against too much consumption of black
licorice, a popular Halloween treat. Consuming 2 ounces of black licorice daily for at least two
weeks can trigger arrhythmia and other medical problems, Healthday reported. The regulator
pointed out that glycyrrhizin, a compound derived from licorice root, can cause a drop in potassium
level in the body. It could lead to abnormal heart rhythm, hypertension, congestive heart failure,
lethargy, and swelling, the FDA warned. There will be no permanent health problem if the
consumption of black licorice stops. The warning is mainly for people 40 years old and above. Also
for kids Even if it is mostly children who go on trick–and–treat during Halloween to collect a lot of
candies and chocolates, the FDA said its warning applies to all ages if too much of black licorice is
eaten. The agency advised people who experience muscle weakness or irregular heart rhythm to stop
eating the sweet immediately and contact a health provider. It can also interact with some
medication, dietary supplements, and herbs. Among men, licorice can reduce testosterone levels,
while for women, it may cause harm for those with a history of estrogen–dependent tumors such as
breast or uterine cancer because of its estrogenic properties. Pregnant women are also advised
against consuming licorice because it can induce premature labor. Folk remedy However, licorice is
also used as a traditional or folk remedy in eastern

Analysis Of Oogie Bogeyman
Jacquelyn Ortiz
Per 3, English
The Oogie Boogeyman When you were a child were you ever afraid of the dark? Or the closet? Did
you ever think that a crazy child eating monster was in your closet? Such as the bogeyman. Most of
the time your parents had to check your room and under your bed to make sure nothing was there
when you went to sleep. They had to make sure there was nothing in the closet and that it was
tightly closed shut. (paragraph 2 of "Scientific American") In the article written in the scientific
american article "What's the Bogeyman?" states that the bogeyman is not meant for it to scare
children but to make sure they do what they are told. Have your parents ever told you "If you don't
clean your room the bogeyman will come and get you"? That is mainly meant to scare kids into
thinking that they will get "taken" if they don't clean their room or take a shower. The bogeyman can
be anywhere at any time due to it being a shapeless figure. It can be under your bed, in the closet, or
behind the tree while you are walking alone in the dark. It is meant to instill a heavy fear in children
to do what they are told and to not do all of these bad things. The bogeyman is triggered it doesn't
just pop up all the time. There has to be a reason for the bogeyman to be there. (paragraph 5

overcome. The bogeyman can be triggered through social transgressions meaning

Niccolo Ammaniti's I M Not Scared
Has there ever been a time when you felt scared, but knew that your fear couldn't could not take

composition composed by Niccolo Ammaniti, I'm Not Scared, Michele learns the hardships of life,
his fears, his enquiring of courage, his morality and shows the evils he saw in the world. There are
many different parts that make up Michele but the most important one was his fear and what it led
him to do and how it made him selfless. Although identity has existed as a struggle throughout time,
it can exist as the focus of texts, authors who differ as much as their texts, such as Niccolo Ammaniti

The Truth Behind Urban Legends
Urban legends are very complex and interesting aspects of culture. They often inspire holidays,
movies, poetry, stories and more. But urban legends go far beyond how they seem on the surface.
Decoding the origins and messages behind urban legends is the key to understanding the truth of a
legend. Illustrating the messages, urban legends may be benign, or malicious. In this essay we are
going to look at these messages and what purpose they serve. First, the paper investigates how
people use urban legends to teach lessons or send warnings. Next, we are going to look at how and
why societies use urban legends for entertainment purposes. Finally, we are going to show how

people who research urban legends describe them as cultural and social phenomenon, and because
they are often riveting and interesting they often inspire many other aspects of culture including art,
movies, music, and celebrations. One example comes from the city of New Orleans during the
month of May 1918. A ferocious killer known as the Axeman terrorized the city for a year and a
half. Interestingly, stories say that the Axeman had a thing for jazz. He even threatened the citizens
of New Orleans in a letter stating "I am very fond of jazz music, and I swear by all the devils in the
nether regions that every person shall be spared in whose home a jazz band is in full swing at the
time I have just mentioned. If everyone has a jazz band going, well, then, so much the better for you
people. One thing is certain and that is that some of your people who do not jazz it on Tuesday night
(if there be any) will get the axe." His Love for jazz inspired a musical piece composed by a well–
known local composer Joseph Davilla who named the song "The Mysterious Axeman's Jazz". The
song became a hit for the people of New Orleans who saw it as the theme song for this gruesome
killer (Tayler). This case is just one example of how urban legends influence other elements of
culture. Their influence on culture may help spread and explain the messages these urban

Hipster Research Paper
As an international student from China, the noun hipster is a fresh word to me. The tough mission
for me is shaping the hipster in my mind. Based on my understanding, hipster leads a new trend of
fashion, is wild about irony and lacks authenticity. They are away from the mainstream. Hipster has
its own unique taste of fashion. "They are feminized(skinny, fashion–y, coiffed) but they are also–to
judge from the figures name–checked as hipsters during the panel–mostly men" (Jennifer
Baumgardner, 2010), Jennifer Baumgarder thinks hipster tending to wear faggy clothing. As I
observed around LA, I saw people are on skinny pants and wear deep V–neck T–shirt from
American Apparel which is the brand of hipster style clothing store. This style can be the latest
hipster style since the fashion always changed. They also like to wear vintage clothing in order to be
chic people. Sometimes their clothing will have some irony stuff. For example, on 2002, the typical
dressing of hipster style is wearing PBR trucker hat and faux vintage T–shirt (Josh Meister, ND).
"The hipster, then, is the bogeyman who keeps us from becoming too settled in our identity, keeps

Some of the T–shirts labeled ' Legalize LA', 'Free Iran' which is quite ironic. By the large, American

I'm Not Scared, a novel by Niccolo Ammaniti is narrated by a thirty one year old, Michele Amitrano
who discovers an innocent child who had been dehumanized and traumatized by the violence of his
captors. The author explores the themes of friendship and loyalty. There are examples of real
friendship and loyalty shown by Michele throughout the novel. In contrast, there are other characters
who struggle to remain loyal to their gang, family or friends and others who find themselves without
the support of real friends. Skull, the gang leader of the Acqua Traverse children shows little
friendship and loyalty towards his gang members. Salvatore, Michele's best friend betrays Michele's
trust and risks his friendship with him. Pino, Michele's father

The Cause Of Racism Strengthens The Word Community
Racism stops the word "community" in its tracks. It is a weak and cowardly mindset, with obvious
and atrocious effects. It prevents the incorporation of other cultures that could positively benefit
native cultures. Racism incites hatred and fear, and breeds violence. The word racism means
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the
belief that one's own race is superior. It's the type of controversy that, when mentioned, generates
bated breath and a tense feeling. Racism is, at its best, disgusting. With that in mind, however, the
question remains, why would anyone ever harbor such feelings? The causes of racism can be
unclear, but it is widely accepted that discrimination of those of different races stem from the fear of
loss and displacement, ignorance, and a desire to feel superior. The fear of loss and displacement is a
common reason for racism. One who has a fear of the experiencing loss can strive to latch onto
someone or something to blame when loss occurs. This fear and anger is often directed to someone
out of one's comfort zone, which can be an individual or group from a different place, a different
religion, a different gender, or, in many cases, someone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, that is not to say that one should ever stop trying to prevent racism in communities,
schools, and workplaces. Racism will always create hatred, fear, and violence. One can not be a
peaceful racist; there are always those negative effects. The most straightforward solution to racism
would be to simply treat everyone with equal opportunity. However, due to seemingly
uncontrollable fear of loss and displacement, ignorance, and a desire to be superior, it seems that
there will always be some measure of racism in today's world and minds. It is each individual's job
to prevent it as much as that individual

A Journey of Valuable Lesson in Niccolo Ammaniti 's I'm...
The novel, I'm Not Scared, by Niccolo Ammaniti takes you on a memorable journey with Michele
Amitrano, a nine year old boy, who learns valuable lessons on how trust and loyalty gives you more
than greed and money–oriented acts. The journey arises in 1978 in Aqua Traverse during the time
when the small, isolated town of Southern Italy suffered from a major heat wave. Around this time is
when Michele makes a tragic discovery of a young, kidnapped Filippo who is chained up in a hole
and made to live in the most inhumane conditions. Through the finding of Filippo Michele's
innocence becomes a thing of the past as it uncovers the truth about the real monsters in Aqua
Traverse. Although, Michele never loses sight of his strong belief in the values of trust and loyalty
even with his regretful selling out of Filippo to Salvatore Scardiccione and Pino's (Papa's) to deter
him from knowing the truth but then his materialistic ways of winning him back after the truth is
discovered.
Michele's first experience with the acts of betrayal is when he discovers the villager's involvement in
the kidnapping of Filippo. From this he realizes the value of trust and loyalty is far more important
than money. Prior to his discovery of the kidnapping, Michele admired and looked up to all the
adults in Aqua Traverse, especially his parents, Pino and Teresa. Throughout the novel we see
Michele's views and opinions of his father change dramatically with hints Ammaniti provides. Such

Analysis: Does Alcohol Help Or Hurt Your Writing
Throughout History, many of the world's most creative and articulate minds have been plagued by
periods of intense alcohol addiction. Alcohol was a way of escape for most writers, but those writers
didn't realize that they were making an even bigger problem for themselves. An addiction is
considered to be the result of multiple factors working together. It only takes a second to initiate an
addiction, but getting rid of one can take years. An authors addiction could help them to write better
by providing characters or content to a story and giving them things to base their story on.
The great american novelist F. Scott FitzGerald's booze filled writings are what led him to

A blog was made by Joanna Penn that addressed the question, Does Alcohol help or Hurt your
Writing. She addressed both sides of the argument, but she agreed the alcohol does hurt your writing
because, "It can make your health, relationships, and writing suffer." Joenna can say this because she
experienced a small glimpse of of this suffering when she got a severe hangover and couldn't write
anything for a week. For this reason, opponents stress that alcohol is very detrimental to an author's
writing. Thought it is a valid point, alcohol addictions have enhanced many authors writings in a
multitude of ways. Joanna Penn says for some authors, "Alcohol helps get rid of inhibitions, and
perhaps this helps people to write the truth or frees the imagination to write crazy things." Alcohol
makes you unaware to what you are doing and your surroundings, so it makes sense that authors can
write some things that their self–conscious could be blocking. To Sum up, an alcohol addiction can
act as a double–edged sword for

Pascal Boyer's Explanation Of Religion Summary
First of all, Pascal Boyer begins by giving common explanations of religion, all of them have some
logic and good understanding. Also, he introduces by saying that psychology, anthropology, and
neuroscience offer more empirical approach in acquiring and representing religious concepts. In
fact, he gives a table represented by Do's and Don'ts in the study of religion, apparently what he
wants us to say and not say. He keeps saying the important that is our understanding of why religion
is easy to acquire and transmit by giving us what he thinks are the two main points of this statement,
religion does not activate particular capacity in the mind and religion and no religion are parts of our
mental equipment. He starts arguing that people defend their beliefs according to his view in what
he call sleep of reason interpretation. However, Boyer is not satisfactory at all with the sleep of
reason because some pieces of that information will have effect in some people but not others, and
he express that he could make up hundreds of such interesting and irrefutable beliefs that no one
would ever consider as a possible belief. Through the reading Pascal differs that all human beings do

confused and of course feel different concepts about religion. Additionally, Boyer is able to present a
very dense network of theories which not only explains many religious phenomena but also sets
them in relation to each other. The integration of cognitive science research leads to a very realistic
model of how religious concepts are processed and communicated. Also, Boyer's account of the
natural basis of religion explains very well the persistence and re–emergence of religion even in a
secularized environment, as well as the tensions between official and folk religion. In addition

Short Story The Bogeyman
Boogeyman. What is it? How does it look like? What is it's purpose? Many people have come to
wonder these questions some time in their life when they hear the word "Boogeyman." They make
assumptions and jump to conclusions as to what they think it is. But really, what is a boogeyman?
As you continue on to read, I will talk about the similarities and differences between an article
"What's The Boogeyman" and a short story "The Boogeyman." In the article, it explains how a
Boogeyman can be anything that will scare you straight up. There isn't a specific shape or form to
the Boogeyman, it's just suppose to be something that will make you scared. The Boogeyman isn't
located in just one place. It can be in your closet at night when you're asleep, it can be in the
backseat of your car when you're alone. It can be anywhere your mind places it. Stuff like this is
first introduced to little kids who are not behaving well or are not following specific instructions.
Many parents use this term to get their child to do specific things. For example, a parent can say,
"Eat your vegetables or the () will come get you in your sleep." For this example, this forces the
child to eat their vegetables because they're scared that someone or something will come get them.
They don't know what will get them, but they know something will. At a certain age, their
imagination can start to change their perspective on things. In the short story, it explains how a
family of five becomes a family of just

I M Not Scared Loyalty Quotes
Loyalty
Throughout the novel Michele is very loyal to Maria and Filippo as a trustful brother and friend.
Firstly, Michele did not want to lose the race against the gang, but his loyalty to his sister prevented
him from winning. Seeing that Maria had been "swallowed up by the wheat", Michele could not
leave his sister behind. By doing this it was clear to Michele that he would lose the race, but he
knew that he had a high level of responsibility to support his sister when she is in need. Additionally,
when Michele found Filippo he accepted the responsibility of taking care of him regardless of the
risks he knew were involved. However, when making a promise to Filippo that he will return for
him, Michele is soon after forced to take an oath to his father, "I had sworn to Papa that I wouldn't
go". Michele determines that his loyalty to Filippo is everything to him and returns to him "I've
come, I kept my promise". These acts by being a helpful brother and a faithful friend who keeps
promises clearly reflect on Michele's loyalty.

Summary:

lives of Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William H. Seward which throw
Washington into panic. After John Wilkes Booth is killed in a shootout with soldiers, his fellow

Mary is defended by Frederick Aiken, a decommissioned captain in the Union Army.

Gender Roles In The Turn Of The Screw By Henry James
Henry James used not only the fear of apparitions to create his supernatural story, but the fear of not
conforming to the gender and class roles of the society for that time period as well. The Victorian
Era occurred at the end of the 1800s and ended in the very early 1900s. It was extremely common to
constantly follow the unwritten rules for your gender.
In today's world, we talk about the Victorian Era as a time period full of "prudish, hypocritical, [and]
narrow–minded" (Murfin 496) people. The reality is that there was actually just a high natural "drive
for social advancement" (The Victorian Period). The obsession with rising social class over time
could involve either financial or education status (The Victorian Era). The Victorian Era provided

A large number of gender stereotypes stem from the time period in which they are alive (Faye. A
Gender–Based Look at the Turn of the Screw by Henry James). Correspondingly, the female
characters in The Turn of the Screw are the fictional reflection of the truth on the treatment of
women in the Victorian Era. However, the male characters opposed the traditional Victorian men
(Sherman. Victorian Gender Roles in Henry James). Just like it was in the late 1800s, women were
supposed to be pure, quiet, and available for men when called for. Whether or not the "man of the
house" was around, the woman was expected to maintain the happiness of the household (Gender
Roles of Victorian Era for Men and Women). The major contradiction within the time period was the
fact that "motherhood was [idealized], alongside virginal innocence, but women were subject to
pervasive denigration" (Gender Ideology & Separate Spheres in the 19th Century). The governess in

Uaa's Stalking The Bogeyman

in the mind of the main character for eighty minutes. The small cast made spectacular use of the
space around the audience, lighting, costume and set designs, as well as unique vocal choices that
gave definition and life to their characters. I would also like to commend the cast for braving what
was an emotionally difficult production.
The opening scenes of Stalking the Bogeyman gave the audience a great opportunity to learn a little
bit about each of the characters. While the parents were a little more "bland" because they weren't
the story's focus, David and the Bogeyman both have very well defined characteristics. I was taken
aback by the actor's ability to transform his whole body, voice included, into a seven year old boy's.
The enthusiastic pitch in his voice and the rising and falling in energy it carried was unique to a
seven year old, and was portrayed very well. David's transformation throughout the rest of the

Tyler Terror Essay
Tyler Terror was no villain, but he wasn't a hero either. He was what is called an antagonistic anti–
hero. Chaotic Neutral. The halfway point between insanity and heroism. He had nothing to do with
anything but he still managed to get himself into trouble. He was quite a peculiar child and even
more of a peculiar adult. Perhaps the most unusual thing about him was his journal. He never kept a
real journal, in which one would put real journal entries about one's daily life and noteworthy
anecdotes. Instead, he kept a rather odd journal, in which he wrote down his rather odd experiences.
He didn't write in it daily, but whenever he felt drawn to it, he would take the journal out from under
his tired, old mattress and simply write.
The entries would usually be short; always just one or two sentences and never more than seven.
Now, many of these entries have made readers quite uncomfortable ... Show more content on

First off, it is important to understand that Tyler Terror was not always Tyler Terror. Once, he was
Tyler M. Quinn (his more popular name came about later on in his life, when he became something
horrendous). He was presumably a young boy when his schizophrenia first began to embed itself
into his mind. He was about eight or nine years old. His paranoid behavior was dismissed as simply
a child's fear of the bogeyman creeping in his closet. Tyler would lay in bed with his eyes and mind
wide open, a blanket pulled up to his shoulders, and a flashlight under his pillow.
He was a gleeful young boy, and, as did many gleeful young boys, he loved to play games. He lived

To Kill A Mockingbird Compare And Contrast Essay
n To Kill a Mockingbird, children live in an inventive world where mysteries abound but little exists
to actually cause them harm. Scout and Jem spend much of their time inventing stories about their
reclusive neighbor Boo Radley, gleefully scaring themselves before rushing to the secure, calming
presence of their father, Atticus. As the novel progresses, however, the imaginary threat that Boo
Radley poses pales in comparison to the real dangers Jem and Scout encounter in the adult world.
The siblings' recognition of the difference between the two pushes them out of childhood and
toward maturity–and as they make that transition, Boo Radley, their childhood bogeyman, helps
serve as the link between their past and their present. The games and stories Jem and Scout create
around Boo Radley depict him as a source of violence and danger. However, though these
inventions seem designed to prove the children's braveness and maturity, they paradoxically prove
that Jem, Scout, and their friend Dill fundamentally remain children. Their stories are gruesome, and
the thrill of their games–such as touching the side of Boo's house–comes from the danger they
imagine they would face if Boo were to catch them. However, the children are able ... Show more

The fire at Miss Maudie's, Mrs. Dubose's grisly death, and the violence and unrest that trails in the
wake of the Tom Robinson case introduce real misfortune and anxiety into their lives. For the first
time, adults are frightened and sad along with the children, and therefore cannot be counted on to
provide security or refuge. Boo Radley, once such a threatening presence, now seems like a remnant
of a more innocent time. The contrast between then and now seems all the more stark because Boo
Radley remains in their lives, a constant reminder of how things had been

Herma The Shepherd Research Paper
In modern times he is sometimes referred to as The Demon, The Devil, or The Ruler of Hell. These
are titles given to him to show his purpose in most of the modern world. Today he is portrayed as the
evil ruler of Hell who seeks the destruction of Mankind. This belief began in early Christianity, and
was reinforced by Lutherans, Protestants, and Catholics alike. Before the second century ages it was
thought that Satan and his demons could possess your body and cause physical ailments such as
blindness, impotency, and madness. This change had a great deal to do with Herma's The Shepherd
where everyone is depicted as having an angel and a Demon guiding them at all time. The angel
responsible for all the good, and the demon for the bad. This led

The ' U A Region Of South Central Flores ( Indonesia )
a) 'Ua is a region of Nage in south central Flores (Indonesia) located near the purported "cave" of
the now extinct 'ebu gogo' wildmen.
b) Julius Poi, an 'Ua man born in 1922, provided the author with one of the clearest and most
complete accounts of the ebu gogo that proved to be extremely representative of the communities
understanding of this group (rather than radically unique). Poi explained that the ebu gogo were
human–like in form, covered in hair, and possessed faces reminiscent of monkey species.
Additionally, they were shorter than humans and possessed a great deal of strength and speed. The
females were believed to have extremely protracted breasts with which they fed their young from
behind. According to Poi, the ebu gogo ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

escaped to Tana Wolo). After all the ebu gogo had been killed, a mass of maggots crawled out of the
cave and died soon after. (It is important to keep in mind that other sources provide slight variations
on this extermination story–see pages 21–22).
e) What the ebu gogo looked like (brief description): Based on a majority consensus of informants,
the ebu gogo could be identified as either a "primitive" human form or a large non–human
"primate." Additionally, most individuals described the ebu gogo as shorter than the average 'Ua
villager, vigorous in stature, and mostly vegetarian in diet (each of these distinctions was disputed
by at least one other informant). Their limbs were held to be of average size (i.e. human proportions)
and two informants detailed their small foot size. Everyone interviewed by the author agreed that the
ebu gogo stood upright and walked on two feet. In terms of their facial features, many Nage people
described them either as monkeys or extremely ugly humans. They were described as having
flat/wide noses and large human–like eyes and ears (although these points are also disputed). Along
with having a large mouth (for swallowing), the teeth of the ebu gogo were usually described as
larger than average. Their most

Im Not Scared Chapter Questions
I'm Not Scared: Chapter Questions Chapter 1 pp. 1–41 1. Acqua Traverse has a very farm like
setting, with a heap of livestock and things such a vegetables growing. It was a countryside setting.
Acqua Traverse is very desolate during the day, only the children venture outside as it is summer
and is extremely hot. The adults stay inside during the day to escape the heat. It seems as if most
people in Acqua Traverse know each other as well. I feel as if Acqua Traverse is your typical
countryside town, it is located in the south of Italy so I know they are not as well off with money but
it seems like the population of Acqua Traverse still live their lives to the fullest. 2. Michele and

3. Michele's father tells him that monsters do not exist, and other things such as ghost, werewolves
and witches are just nonsense invented to frighten mugs and that he should be afraid of men, not of
the things he is afraid of. 4. Michele's relationship with his mother is quite different to the one he
has with his father. Rather than trying to impress his mother like he does with his father, he just tries
to please her and make her happy rather than seeing her upset and angry. He saw his mother as a
beautiful woman who he respected quite immensely. Michele seems to get along better with his
father as his conversations with him are livelier than those between himself and his mother. Chapter
3 pp. 57–67 1. Michele can't tell his father about the boy in the hole because his father doesn't give
him the opportunity to tell him of the boy. Also his father said if he keeps carrying on the way he
does he will send him to the friars, which Michele doesn't want to happen. 2. Michele notices that
the saucepan was exactly the same as one he had at home, one that he and Maria had bought with
their mother when shopping at a market in Lucignano. When getting home later that day he searches
for the saucepan and discovers that it is missing from their house. 3. Michele imagined that the boy

Trigger Warning: The Bogeyman
Trigger warning. The crimes stated here are real crimes created by real human. Actual death is
involved. If you are sensitive to such things, please do not read this post. The Bogeyman (also spelt
as boogeyman) is a mythical creature which kidnaps children. It was 'created' to scare children so
that they would behave well all the time. It is something like Santa. Be a good boy and you will get
your presents, be a bad boy and you will get coals but, the Bogeyman doesn't give you coals. He
kidnaps you and murders you later. In some culture, the Bogeyman even eats children that he had
kidnapped. Children believe that the Bogeyman hides under their bed, in the closet or even behind
the doors although some believe that the Bogeyman doesn't hide ... Show more content on

complete opposite of Guardian Angels and is always compared to the Devil. Parents would sing
lullabies as a way to warn their children against El Coco. The most famous 'lullaby' would be:

Realism In Stephen King's 'The Boogeyman'
Stephen King's short story "The Boogeyman" is a thrilling adventure that incorporates an urban
legend that has many names throughout the world, and therefore makes any reader able to identify
with this story. It pulls you in, making you question whether the stories your parents, cousins, or
siblings you had finally deemed as unrealistic and fake were fictional at all. Why is King's story so
eerie? Is it the realism in the story, or the fact that the creature being described may have always
been a small weakness for you? The scientific article "The Bogeyman" in which we are explained
the origin and purpose for the monster may have the answers to these questions. After all, how
probable is it that an unidentified creature will happen to appear in sight tonight? In the scientific
article, it is explained that the purpose of the boogeyman is to frighten people in order for them to fit
the "norm" in society. King's article also uses the boogeyman in order to frighten people, but does it
so that the man, Lester Billings seems crazed, and yet in a sense, believable. For example, in the
short story, Billings is present in a psychiatrist's office and is telling his story to the therapist. This
plays into the realism within the story, as many people have therapists and believe in supernatural
forces such as: ghosts, vampires, demons, etc (not everyone goes to therapy for these reasons, but it
is safe to assume some people do suffer from paranoia within this particular topic). The

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a story authored by Tim Burton. Both the book and the movie
have some striking similarities, as the book was adapted into the masterpiece of a movie. However,
when the book was adapted into the film, there were some considerable changes and additions made
to the original story. These similarities and differences between the novel and film are what we will
elaborate on.
There are five similarities that stand out in both the book and the movie. First, Jack Skellington,
protagonist in both media portrayals, complains about how linear and boring his world feels.
Additionally, the scene where Jack shows his intriguing discoveries from a place called Christmas

Persuasive Essay On The Bogeyman
Compare and Contrast on the Boogeyman
Intro–The Boogeyman is a horror character that appears in short stories he scares children at a
certain age usually 2–6 years old. This horror character usually only comes for you when you're
alone typically at night when you are sleeping in your room, he hides in the closet. What he does is
he is the horror character that makes young kids do as they are told like for example when your
mom says eat your vegetables and you said no as a kid she would say ¨ok if you don´t eat your
vegetables the Boogeyman will come for you at night.¨So the Boogeyman is there to ensure we
follow the rules and bring good behavior towards children.
Paragraph 1 –In the Scientific American story it tells us that the Boogeyman is a teaching tool for
young children and that he is a factor there to punish or steal children when they are not following
the specific rules they have to be following. He is a shapeless factor so that means he could be
anywhere at anytime so typically parents use the closet or say "don´t check under the bed".The
Boogeyman hides in the closet and the reason why parents say that the Boogeyman comes out the
closet is because typically at the age of 2–6 kids have a fear towards the dark and that is when the
closet also becomes a factor that parents use to make sure that their son or daughter follow the rules
they have to follow or do what they are told to do.Now in King's short story he used the closet as the
place where the Boogeyman would

Comparison In Society In Fahrenheit 451 And Today's Society
Comparison in societies in Fahrenheit 451 and today's society Fahrenheit 451 has a great deal of
government control, technology that is advanced it is injurious to the society and the people
there, and that censorship has been a terrible thing for the people. Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451
reveals how the society, which is a dystopia can be detrimental with more government control, and
how censorship blinds the people in the society, and how technology gets to advanced it can be a
inimical thing and how it has been shown or not shown in today's society.
Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopia that has too much government control, technology that is used to blind
the people in the society so that nobody questions anything about what is going wrong in it. Also,
the technology is advanced by a metallic hound that hunts and captures criminals. "He also manages
to incinerate the Mechanical Hound, but not before he is injured by it.". This one example of how
the advanced technology is harming the society. The Hounds are programmed to capture or kill
people who are caught violating this law. They also deceive people with fancy new technology, such
as giant TVs that are installed into the wall it keeps them from questioning or think about their life
and everything that goes on. This is the main reason why people do not see anything wrong with the
dystopia, they are in because the government explains that the books are full of false ideas such as
firefighters use to put out fires instead of

The Fallacialist Lothrop Stoddard
Refutation of this stupid, lowbrow notion would be better done in an article in a publication but I am
seeing it promoted more and more and as I am very interested in combating error, particularly
among nationalists, I'll take a crack at briefly addressing it.
The nuts and bolts of this is that we have this half–caste Austrian nobleman (his mother was
Japanese) who made some remarks almost a century ago about how the man of the future would be
mixed race. He is also in some sense considered the father of the EU due to his pan–European
political organization. From this it is asserted that he 'planned' the genocide of the white race and
that European elites are implementing this 'plan' now almost a century later.
One version of the 'plan' fingers the usual Jewish bogeyman even though Coudenhove–Kalergi
wasn't Jewish. More generally we are expected to believe people like Angela Merkel are consciously
following this 'plan'. The problem is there's no evidence they are. ... Show more content on

Theme Of Fear In Lord Of The Flies
The bogeyman is a make believe character that goes around to everyone's beds or closets. It makes
people overreact and makes them run in fear, which can be destructive. This is like in the book lord
of the flies when they get frightened of the so Called beast. And so there by making fear a
destructive emotion. One way fear can be a destructive emotion is it can make you less logical. "the
beast was on it's knees in the center, It's arms folded over it's face" (Golding 152–153). This shows
fear is a destructive emotion because they are killing the beast out of their fear, which makes it first
of all not right second of all it makes them more destructive. Another example of fear making people
less logical is when in the book "Lord of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

"Where?'"In the woods. "[...]" He says the beastie came in the dark" (Golding 73–80). This shows
that Ralph was underestimating the little kids and then that forces the little kids to overreact. They
also overreacted because they were afraid of the best because they could not control the beast. As
well as it talks on page 37 about everyone thinking there is a beast, but Simion. "But there isn't a
beast! ... But I tell you there isn't a beast!" (Golding 37). This shows that all of the kids are
overreacting to the beast. It also proves that Simon is overreacting trying to to prove to everyone
that the beast they should not be terrified of the beast. Which is why fear can make people

Summary Of The Boogeyman
Many people have or have had a fear whether it's a fear if the dark, clowns, or heights. Most fears
are in your head and are psyching you out and some even are imaginary, but are used to scare you.
One thing that people, mostly children, are, or have been afraid of is the Boogeyman. The
Boogeyman although imaginary, is based on a real story. It is linked with one of the most horrible
killers, Albert Fish, from the 1800s. A much better description of the Boogeyman and why we have
fears are explained in The Boogeyman by Stephen King and in What's the Boogeyman?, a scientific
American article. Novelist, Stephen King in his gothic short story, The Boogeyman, suggests that
even though it may be scary, you need to overcome your fear. He supports his claim by telling the
story of a man, Lester Billing, who was accused of his three children's death, and was afraid of the
Boogeyman. In the story just before each of his children had died, they shouted, The Boogeyman,
and everytime Lester went to see his child, the closet would be slightly cracked open. Lester knew
that something from the closet was the cause of his children's deaths, but never did anything about
it. Also, after the incidents, he would keep closets and doors shut because he was scared of the
Boogeyman returning. Finally, after going to a therapist, Lester comes face to face with the
Boogeyman, who was disguised as Dr.Harper, the therapist. King's purpose is to inform the reader
that if you don't overcome a fear,

The Article ' Monsters And The Moral Imagination '
In the article "Monsters and the Moral Imagination," Stephen Asma, a professor of Philosophy and
Distinguished Scholar at Columbia College Chicago, argues that the existence of monsters have a
purpose in our lives. It is not only to reveal our deepest fears, but to question our moral instincts.
Being attacked by fictional monsters seems impractical, however, chaos and disasters do happen and
exist in the real world. The creation of monsters is due to our reaction of our fears and the inability
to control the world we live in. Asma states, "Monsters can stand as symbols of human vulnerability
and crisis, and as such they play imaginative foils for thinking about our own responses to menace."
This means that human weaknesses and fears are represented through monstrous figures, and these
fictional situations provide perspective into how we react in fearful environments. In our current
society we fear many things, including but not limited to failed or corrupt governmental systems, the
afterlife, the unknown, and captivity, which makes this claim valid. Although we may not realize it,
these fears are embodied by the horror monsters we see in popular culture. Society shares common
fears, and often times the most prevailing fear is reflected in the most popular characters at any
given time. Monsters are the fictional representations of society's dark subconscious, exploring not
only why the author's statement is accurate but what we actually fear. The author clearly

Essay about Punic Wars
Discuss the Roman Punic Wars, in terms of their circumstances and overall effect on Rome's
economic and social development Also discuss the ensuing "Gracchan turbulence" from the same
perspective.
The circumstance for the Roman Punic Wars towards Rome was a simple human
reaction. If an outsider such as Italy, Carthage, or Greece make threats towards Rome,
Rome will simply fight. The Punic Wars lasted in 3 stages, all resulting to the obsessive
pride and higher standings of Rome. Rome's initial desire of expansion was only for
farming land. Romans believed like anyone else that victory brought them honor as well
as a strong, political career. Rome strongly had their victory of Italy due to their military

The first Punic War began due to Rome's fear of Messena. Carthage's strong
commercial center with a monopoly in trading of Western Mediterranean and aong the
west coasts of Africa and Europe. Rome feared that Carthage would attack or interfere
with their trade. Rome suffered sever losses such as losing an army in North Africa as
well as the destruction of hundreds of naval ships in battles. Rome however was still
dedicated to victory and nothing less. Eventually Rome utilized their allies throughout
Italy and defeated Carthage. Carthage lost Sicily, Sardinia, and the Islands of Corisca.
Slowly Rome was developing into an empire, yet still in fear of being
overpowered by their allies. Carthage expanded into Spain, who was at the time rich in

Cut In Legal Aid Essay
Cuts in legal aid are causing problems for the ordinary people and leaving them without vital
support because there has been a reform in legal aid, which are the cuts. In this assignment, I will
discuss the two–different side of impact of legal aid cuts on the people and how this act has
impacted legal aid. Legal Aid and Advice Act 1949 was the beginning of legal aid, this is the access
to assistance to fight for justice for the ones that cannot afford legal representation and in need of
protection. The state pays the legal professions which are the solicitors and barristers to ensure the
right to a fair trial and equality before the law is not breached. In 2012, legal aid cut was formed

Which suggested negative outcomes because they are saving a huge amount but effecting more
people. For example, an online article the Royal Gazette it states that 'Mentally ill 'Let down by the
justice system', it's about mentally ill man is not being granted legal aid because he does not fall into
a category that will grant legal aid for him. This is wrong as injustice is happening to him and his
human right is being breach, which then proves that the government is not protecting the citizens
and not carrying out the right responsibilities. Also, present why the legal aid shouldn't have cuts as
now it's become a barrier to justice. Another, problem that legal aid cuts have raised is parents
fighting for custody, if a legal aid service cannot represent one side, it states how they will struggle
without the help of legal aid and then won't get the custody and which will go to the other parent
that's probably not fit to take custody for the kids. For instance, a mother that is low on income, she
won't be able to afford her own representation and she won't receive legal aid as she's not mentally
unstable, this will leave her for litigation, but the fact she won't win because she cannot procedure
sufficient evidence against her opposite

Essay on Goya: Truth and War
GOYA:
Truth and War
On May 2nd 1808 the people of Madrid revolted against the French troops
occupying their city. The following day the French retaliated. In the remembrance of
this event Francisco de Goya painted The Third of May. The horrific scene takes place at
night on a deserted hillside. The feeling of horror is conveyed by the churoscuro use of
lighting. Painted with intense emotional expression the Spaniards stand before there

This was an idea he used in many of his works, for Goya
himself was a conflicted man.
After 1808 Spain was occupied by Napoleonic forces and Goya witnessed first
hand accounts of murder, rape, pillaging, and mutilation. He quietly recorded these
events until Napoleons demise in 1814. During this 6 year period the brutalities and
miseries of war that had occurred effected the lives of every Spaniard as well as the art of
Goya. After the demise of Napoleon, Goya saw a chance to create a permanent
remembrance of this time period. The results were two large paintings recording May
2nd 1808 and May 3rd 1808 when the French shot suspected Spaniards without trial.
Much like Gerricault's The Raft of Medusa, The Third of May portrays brutal human
tragedy. These two paintings tell stories of heroism turned to horrific tragedy with
scenes so close that the viewer is forced into the event. In–humanity has now become
human. Heroism and suffering now seem equally desperate and pathetic. Although
these two paintings are scenes of tragedy, Goya's painting correlates more directly to
war. He conveys war in its most brutal form giving the soldiers a machine like quality.
They are lined up in almost identical positioning and attire. Each soldier is in the same
tense stance, gripping his rifle as if it were a part of his body, anticipating the recoil of the
shots to come. The line of the soldiers, as well as

Ammaniti’s Novel, I’m Not Scared Essay
This is a profoundly moral tale of lost innocence and adult cruelty. Do you agree?
Ammaniti's novel I'm Not Scared set in Acqua Traverse, Italy 1978 is a powerful text, which
explores relevant social themes and issues. Besides being a tale of adult cruelty and lost innocence
we cannot ignore the role in which loyalty and betrayal play in the novel. These central themes
make this novel a compelling text.
In the novel Michelle journeys from a joyful innocent child into a perceptive and wiser youth.
Initially we view Michelle as a child who is very compassionate, willing to "do the forfeit" for
Barbara to exempt her from Skull's cruelty. As the story progresses qualities namely courage and
loyalty surface in Michelle. These two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fillipo like Togo struggled when forced to wash and like Togo, Fillipo was very dirty. Fillipo had to
live in his own excretion this can be seen when Michelle lifts the mattress to the hole "A terrible
stink of shit was released". The treatment of Fillipo is appalling, this act is magnified by the fact that
the adults in the village have children of their own yet are capable of such cruelty. The author
portrays Fillipo as identical to Michelle in age and height, the intended effect is to draw parallels
with Michelle and show that Fillipo is like any other nine year old.
Loyalty and betrayal occurs frequently in the text. Michelle is loyal to Fillipo, he is willing to break
a promise he made "on my fathers head". He realises the suffering Fillipo endures and forms a bond.
He admits openly towards the end of the text that Fillipo "is a friend of mine". Betrayal is also a
prominent theme in the story. To key instances of betrayal occur, the first being Salvatore's betrayal
of Michelle. Secondly we also must view Pino's betrayal of his family. Salvatore's betrayal was a
heart wrenching experience for Michelle. Michelle is beaten by Felice but it is his heart which hurts
most, "Salvatore had broken it". Some readers feel that Michelle betrayed Pino however it has to be
said that Pino despite having the best intentions for his family ultimately betrayed them. He was the
one who chose to pursue the kidnapping, he did not serve the family well by engaging in

Evil-Revivalist Concept Of Evil

  • 1. Evil-Revivalist Concept Of Evil Philosophers have debated what evil is since the beginning of philosophy. Is evil an innate characteristic in some people, or is evil simply a blanket term used to describe actions caused by outside influences, e.g. upbringing, circumstance, or mental illness? What is the nature of evil? There are two main sects of opinion for philosophers when it comes to evil: evil–skeptics and evil– revivalists (Calder). Evil–skeptics believe that we should abandon the concept of evil. Evil–skeptics are of the opinion that the concept of evil is problematic and should be abandoned, while other moral concepts, such as right, wrong, good, and bad, are necessary. On the other hand, evil– revivalists believe that the concept of evil has a place in society. Evil–skeptics have three main points in why the concept of evil should be abandoned, as Todd Calder illustrates in "The Concept of Evil": Evil–skeptics give three main reasons to abandon the concept of evil: (1) the concept of evil involves unwarranted metaphysical commitments to dark spirits, the supernatural, or the devil; (2) the concept of evil is useless because it lacks explanatory power; and (3) the concept of evil can be harmful or dangerous when used in moral, political, and legal contexts, and so, it should not be used in those contexts, if at all. (Calder) Prior to WWII, there was very little philosophical literature pertaining to the concept of evil; however, philosophers have considered the nature and origins of evil in the broad sense since ancient times (Calder). One theory on the origin of evil is called Manichaean dualism. As Calder describes in "The Concept of Evil": According to Manichaean dualism, the universe is the product of an ongoing battle between two coequal and coeternal first principles: God and the Prince of Darkness...The Manichaean solution to the problem of evil is that God is neither all–powerful nor the sole creator of the world. God is supremely good and creates only good things, but he or she is powerless to prevent the Prince of Darkness from creating evil. (Calder) One main problem with Manichaean dualism is that, for a theist, it is hard to accept the concept that God is not the all–powerful creator he is thought to be. For that ... I gave the figure standing in the darkness of the doorway a vicious glance. I felt the pain growing on my knees and my cheek. My bright blue eyes started to fill with tears and what was my sleek, smooth brown hair was messed up and dirty. I was always teased for my fear of the bogeyman and the dark. I got my fear when something was moving under my bed in the middle of the night and my brother said it was the bogeyman. So ever since I have been petrified at night of the bogeyman. When I arrived to camp my class had the talk. The don't feed the animals, no walking around at night. The thing they say every year but I didn't ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I started to scream even louder It was the bogeyman I thought. I was terrified the figure was so scary it could scare the wings off a fly. Then I heard a noise that no bogeyman would make, a noise that a raccoon makes. Raccoons I thought, why are they after me. They looked cute at first then up close they became feral monsters. I ran for my life. They started to chase me from on top of the old dying trees I felt a stone hit the top of my head. The raccoons were dropping things on my head, on the bright side, I thought at least these aren't monkeys, they would be throwing something else. I could hear a creek in the distance. If I ran to it I could dive in and they lose my scent. As the gushing water became louder I noticed how long I had been out here it was almost pitch black. I could see the river flowing towards the camp, I jumped in to the river. It chilled me to the bone. Then as my head popped out of the water I could see the majestic sun rise. • 7. Argumentative Essay On Black Licorice The US Food and Drug Administration warned on Monday against too much consumption of black licorice, a popular Halloween treat. Consuming 2 ounces of black licorice daily for at least two weeks can trigger arrhythmia and other medical problems, Healthday reported. The regulator pointed out that glycyrrhizin, a compound derived from licorice root, can cause a drop in potassium level in the body. It could lead to abnormal heart rhythm, hypertension, congestive heart failure, lethargy, and swelling, the FDA warned. There will be no permanent health problem if the consumption of black licorice stops. The warning is mainly for people 40 years old and above. Also for kids Even if it is mostly children who go on trick–and–treat during Halloween to collect a lot of candies and chocolates, the FDA said its warning applies to all ages if too much of black licorice is eaten. The agency advised people who experience muscle weakness or irregular heart rhythm to stop eating the sweet immediately and contact a health provider. It can also interact with some medication, dietary supplements, and herbs. Among men, licorice can reduce testosterone levels, while for women, it may cause harm for those with a history of estrogen–dependent tumors such as breast or uterine cancer because of its estrogenic properties. Pregnant women are also advised against consuming licorice because it can induce premature labor. Folk remedy However, licorice is also used as a traditional or folk remedy in eastern ... Did you ever think that a crazy child eating monster was in your closet? Such as the bogeyman. Most of the time your parents had to check your room and under your bed to make sure nothing was there when you went to sleep. They had to make sure there was nothing in the closet and that it was tightly closed shut. (paragraph 2 of "Scientific American") In the article written in the scientific american article "What's the Bogeyman?" states that the bogeyman is not meant for it to scare children but to make sure they do what they are told. Have your parents ever told you "If you don't clean your room the bogeyman will come and get you"? That is mainly meant to scare kids into thinking that they will get "taken" if they don't clean their room or take a shower. The bogeyman can be anywhere at any time due to it being a shapeless figure. It can be under your bed, in the closet, or behind the tree while you are walking alone in the dark. It is meant to instill a heavy fear in children to do what they are told and to not do all of these bad things. The bogeyman is triggered it doesn't just pop up all the time. There has to be a reason for the bogeyman to be there. (paragraph 5 "Scientific American) If the bogeyman can be triggered it can also be controlled and can also be overcome. One example comes from the city of New Orleans during the month of May 1918. A ferocious killer known as the Axeman terrorized the city for a year and a half. Interestingly, stories say that the Axeman had a thing for jazz. He even threatened the citizens of New Orleans in a letter stating "I am very fond of jazz music, and I swear by all the devils in the nether regions that every person shall be spared in whose home a jazz band is in full swing at the time I have just mentioned. If everyone has a jazz band going, well, then, so much the better for you people. One thing is certain and that is that some of your people who do not jazz it on Tuesday night (if there be any) will get the axe." His Love for jazz inspired a musical piece composed by a well– known local composer Joseph Davilla who named the song "The Mysterious Axeman's Jazz". The song became a hit for the people of New Orleans who saw it as the theme song for this gruesome killer (Tayler). This case is just one example of how urban legends influence other elements of culture. Their influence on culture may help spread and explain the messages these urban ... Based on my understanding, hipster leads a new trend of fashion, is wild about irony and lacks authenticity. They are away from the mainstream. Hipster has its own unique taste of fashion. "They are feminized(skinny, fashion–y, coiffed) but they are also–to judge from the figures name–checked as hipsters during the panel–mostly men" (Jennifer Baumgardner, 2010), Jennifer Baumgarder thinks hipster tending to wear faggy clothing. This style can be the latest hipster style since the fashion always changed. They also like to wear vintage clothing in order to be chic people. Sometimes their clothing will have some irony stuff. For example, on 2002, the typical dressing of hipster style is wearing PBR trucker hat and faux vintage T–shirt (Josh Meister, ND). • 19. The Cause Of Racism Strengthens The Word Community Racism stops the word "community" in its tracks. It is a weak and cowardly mindset, with obvious and atrocious effects. It prevents the incorporation of other cultures that could positively benefit native cultures. Racism incites hatred and fear, and breeds violence. The word racism means prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. It's the type of controversy that, when mentioned, generates bated breath and a tense feeling. Racism is, at its best, disgusting. With that in mind, however, the question remains, why would anyone ever harbor such feelings? The causes of racism can be unclear, but it is widely accepted that discrimination of those of different races stem from the fear of loss and displacement, ignorance, and a desire to feel superior. The fear of loss and displacement is a common reason for racism. One who has a fear of the experiencing loss can strive to latch onto someone or something to blame when loss occurs. This fear and anger is often directed to someone out of one's comfort zone, which can be an individual or group from a different place, a different religion, a different gender, or, in many cases, someone ... However, due to seemingly uncontrollable fear of loss and displacement, ignorance, and a desire to be superior, it seems that there will always be some measure of racism in today's world and minds. The novel, I'm Not Scared, by Niccolo Ammaniti takes you on a memorable journey with Michele Amitrano, a nine year old boy, who learns valuable lessons on how trust and loyalty gives you more than greed and money–oriented acts. The journey arises in 1978 in Aqua Traverse during the time when the small, isolated town of Southern Italy suffered from a major heat wave. Around this time is when Michele makes a tragic discovery of a young, kidnapped Filippo who is chained up in a hole and made to live in the most inhumane conditions. Through the finding of Filippo Michele's innocence becomes a thing of the past as it uncovers the truth about the real monsters in Aqua Traverse. Although, Michele never loses sight of his strong belief in the values of trust and loyalty even with his regretful selling out of Filippo to Salvatore Scardiccione and Pino's (Papa's) to deter him from knowing the truth but then his materialistic ways of winning him back after the truth is discovered. Michele's first experience with the acts of betrayal is when he discovers the villager's involvement in the kidnapping of Filippo. From this he realizes the value of trust and loyalty is far more important than money. Prior to his discovery of the kidnapping, Michele admired and looked up to all the adults in Aqua Traverse, especially his parents, Pino and Teresa. Alcohol was a way of escape for most writers, but those writers didn't realize that they were making an even bigger problem for themselves. An addiction is considered to be the result of multiple factors working together. It only takes a second to initiate an addiction, but getting rid of one can take years. An authors addiction could help them to write better by providing characters or content to a story and giving them things to base their story on. The great american novelist F. Scott FitzGerald's booze filled writings are what led him to prominence as a chronicler of the jazz age. In fact, F. Scott FitzGerald has introduced himself to party ... She addressed both sides of the argument, but she agreed the alcohol does hurt your writing because, "It can make your health, relationships, and writing suffer." Joenna can say this because she experienced a small glimpse of of this suffering when she got a severe hangover and couldn't write anything for a week. For this reason, opponents stress that alcohol is very detrimental to an author's writing. Thought it is a valid point, alcohol addictions have enhanced many authors writings in a multitude of ways. Joanna Penn says for some authors, "Alcohol helps get rid of inhibitions, and perhaps this helps people to write the truth or frees the imagination to write crazy things." Also, he introduces by saying that psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience offer more empirical approach in acquiring and representing religious concepts. In fact, he gives a table represented by Do's and Don'ts in the study of religion, apparently what he wants us to say and not say. He keeps saying the important that is our understanding of why religion is easy to acquire and transmit by giving us what he thinks are the two main points of this statement, religion does not activate particular capacity in the mind and religion and no religion are parts of our mental equipment. He starts arguing that people defend their beliefs according to his view in what he call sleep of reason interpretation. However, Boyer is not satisfactory at all with the sleep of reason because some pieces of that information will have effect in some people but not others, and he express that he could make up hundreds of such interesting and irrefutable beliefs that no one would ever consider as a possible belief. Many people have come to wonder these questions some time in their life when they hear the word "Boogeyman." They make assumptions and jump to conclusions as to what they think it is. But really, what is a boogeyman? As you continue on to read, I will talk about the similarities and differences between an article "What's The Boogeyman" and a short story "The Boogeyman." In the article, it explains how a Boogeyman can be anything that will scare you straight up. There isn't a specific shape or form to the Boogeyman, it's just suppose to be something that will make you scared. The Boogeyman isn't located in just one place. It can be in your closet at night when you're asleep, it can be in the backseat of your car when you're alone. It can be anywhere your mind places it. Stuff like this is first introduced to little kids who are not behaving well or are not following specific instructions. Many parents use this term to get their child to do specific things. For example, a parent can say, "Eat your vegetables or the () will come get you in your sleep." For this example, this forces the child to eat their vegetables because they're scared that someone or something will come get them. They don't know what will get them, but they know something will. Gender Roles In The Turn Of The Screw By Henry James Henry James used not only the fear of apparitions to create his supernatural story, but the fear of not conforming to the gender and class roles of the society for that time period as well. The Victorian Era occurred at the end of the 1800s and ended in the very early 1900s. It was extremely common to constantly follow the unwritten rules for your gender. In today's world, we talk about the Victorian Era as a time period full of "prudish, hypocritical, [and] narrow–minded" (Murfin 496) people. The reality is that there was actually just a high natural "drive for social advancement" (The Victorian Period). The obsession with rising social class over time could involve either financial or education status (The Victorian Era). The Victorian Era provided the three notorious main stages of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A large number of gender stereotypes stem from the time period in which they are alive (Faye. A Gender–Based Look at the Turn of the Screw by Henry James). Correspondingly, the female characters in The Turn of the Screw are the fictional reflection of the truth on the treatment of women in the Victorian Era. However, the male characters opposed the traditional Victorian men (Sherman. Victorian Gender Roles in Henry James). Just like it was in the late 1800s, women were supposed to be pure, quiet, and available for men when called for. Whether or not the "man of the house" was around, the woman was expected to maintain the happiness of the household (Gender Roles of Victorian Era for Men and Women). The major contradiction within the time period was the fact that "motherhood was [idealized], alongside virginal innocence, but women were subject to pervasive denigration" (Gender Ideology & Separate Spheres in the 19th Century). • 37. Uaa's Stalking The Bogeyman UAA's production of Stalking the Bogeyman created an uneasy atmosphere that placed the audience in the mind of the main character for eighty minutes. The small cast made spectacular use of the space around the audience, lighting, costume and set designs, as well as unique vocal choices that gave definition and life to their characters. I would also like to commend the cast for braving what was an emotionally difficult production. The opening scenes of Stalking the Bogeyman gave the audience a great opportunity to learn a little bit about each of the characters. While the parents were a little more "bland" because they weren't the story's focus, David and the Bogeyman both have very well defined characteristics. I was taken aback by the actor's ability to transform his whole body, voice included, into a seven year old boy's. The enthusiastic pitch in his voice and the rising and falling in energy it carried was unique to a seven year old, and was portrayed very well. David's transformation throughout the rest of the performance took the audience through his several stages of his trauma and his aging body. He had nothing to do with anything but he still managed to get himself into trouble. He was quite a peculiar child and even more of a peculiar adult. Perhaps the most unusual thing about him was his journal. He never kept a real journal, in which one would put real journal entries about one's daily life and noteworthy anecdotes. Instead, he kept a rather odd journal, in which he wrote down his rather odd experiences. He didn't write in it daily, but whenever he felt drawn to it, he would take the journal out from under his tired, old mattress and simply write. The entries would usually be short; always just one or two sentences and never more than seven. Now, many of these entries have made readers quite uncomfortable ... He was about eight or nine years old. His paranoid behavior was dismissed as simply a child's fear of the bogeyman creeping in his closet. Tyler would lay in bed with his eyes and mind wide open, a blanket pulled up to his shoulders, and a flashlight under his pillow. He was a gleeful young boy, and, as did many gleeful young boys, he loved to play games. He lived in a lovely two–story home in the suburbs with a pleasant neighborhood around his home. • 41. To Kill A Mockingbird Compare And Contrast Essay n To Kill a Mockingbird, children live in an inventive world where mysteries abound but little exists to actually cause them harm. Scout and Jem spend much of their time inventing stories about their reclusive neighbor Boo Radley, gleefully scaring themselves before rushing to the secure, calming presence of their father, Atticus. As the novel progresses, however, the imaginary threat that Boo Radley poses pales in comparison to the real dangers Jem and Scout encounter in the adult world. The siblings' recognition of the difference between the two pushes them out of childhood and toward maturity–and as they make that transition, Boo Radley, their childhood bogeyman, helps serve as the link between their past and their present. The games and stories Jem and Scout create around Boo Radley depict him as a source of violence and danger. However, though these inventions seem designed to prove the children's braveness and maturity, they paradoxically prove that Jem, Scout, and their friend Dill fundamentally remain children. Their stories are gruesome, and the thrill of their games–such as touching the side of Boo's house–comes from the danger they imagine they would face if Boo were to catch them. However, the children are able ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 51. Realism In Stephen King's 'The Boogeyman' Stephen King's short story "The Boogeyman" is a thrilling adventure that incorporates an urban legend that has many names throughout the world, and therefore makes any reader able to identify with this story. It pulls you in, making you question whether the stories your parents, cousins, or siblings you had finally deemed as unrealistic and fake were fictional at all. Why is King's story so eerie? Is it the realism in the story, or the fact that the creature being described may have always been a small weakness for you? The scientific article "The Bogeyman" in which we are explained the origin and purpose for the monster may have the answers to these questions. After all, how probable is it that an unidentified creature will happen to appear in sight tonight? In the scientific article, it is explained that the purpose of the boogeyman is to frighten people in order for them to fit the "norm" in society. King's article also uses the boogeyman in order to frighten people, but does it so that the man, Lester Billings seems crazed, and yet in a sense, believable. For example, in the short story, Billings is present in a psychiatrist's office and is telling his story to the therapist. This plays into the realism within the story, as many people have therapists and believe in supernatural forces such as: ghosts, vampires, demons, etc (not everyone goes to therapy for these reasons, but it is safe to assume some people do suffer from paranoia within this particular topic). • 55. Persuasive Essay On The Bogeyman Compare and Contrast on the Boogeyman Intro–The Boogeyman is a horror character that appears in short stories he scares children at a certain age usually 2–6 years old. This horror character usually only comes for you when you're alone typically at night when you are sleeping in your room, he hides in the closet. What he does is he is the horror character that makes young kids do as they are told like for example when your mom says eat your vegetables and you said no as a kid she would say ¨ok if you don´t eat your vegetables the Boogeyman will come for you at night.¨So the Boogeyman is there to ensure we follow the rules and bring good behavior towards children. Paragraph 1 –In the Scientific American story it tells us that the Boogeyman is a teaching tool for young children and that he is a factor there to punish or steal children when they are not following the specific rules they have to be following. He is a shapeless factor so that means he could be anywhere at anytime so typically parents use the closet or say "don´t check under the bed".The Boogeyman hides in the closet and the reason why parents say that the Boogeyman comes out the closet is because typically at the age of 2–6 kids have a fear towards the dark and that is when the closet also becomes a factor that parents use to make sure that their son or daughter follow the rules they have to follow or do what they are told to do.Now in King's short story he used the closet as the place where the Boogeyman would ... Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 reveals how the society, which is a dystopia can be detrimental with more government control, and how censorship blinds the people in the society, and how technology gets to advanced it can be a inimical thing and how it has been shown or not shown in today's society. Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopia that has too much government control, technology that is used to blind the people in the society so that nobody questions anything about what is going wrong in it. Also, the technology is advanced by a metallic hound that hunts and captures criminals. "He also manages to incinerate the Mechanical Hound, but not before he is injured by it.". This one example of how the advanced technology is harming the society. The Hounds are programmed to capture or kill people who are caught violating this law. They also deceive people with fancy new technology, such as giant TVs that are installed into the wall it keeps them from questioning or think about their life and everything that goes on. • 63. Summary Of The Boogeyman Many people have or have had a fear whether it's a fear if the dark, clowns, or heights. Most fears are in your head and are psyching you out and some even are imaginary, but are used to scare you. One thing that people, mostly children, are, or have been afraid of is the Boogeyman. The Boogeyman although imaginary, is based on a real story. It is linked with one of the most horrible killers, Albert Fish, from the 1800s. A much better description of the Boogeyman and why we have fears are explained in The Boogeyman by Stephen King and in What's the Boogeyman?, a scientific American article. Novelist, Stephen King in his gothic short story, The Boogeyman, suggests that even though it may be scary, you need to overcome your fear. He supports his claim by telling the story of a man, Lester Billing, who was accused of his three children's death, and was afraid of the Boogeyman. In the story just before each of his children had died, they shouted, The Boogeyman, and everytime Lester went to see his child, the closet would be slightly cracked open. Lester knew that something from the closet was the cause of his children's deaths, but never did anything about it. Also, after the incidents, he would keep closets and doors shut because he was scared of the Boogeyman returning. Finally, after going to a therapist, Lester comes face to face with the Boogeyman, who was disguised as Dr.Harper, the therapist. • 65. The Article ' Monsters And The Moral Imagination ' In the article "Monsters and the Moral Imagination," Stephen Asma, a professor of Philosophy and Distinguished Scholar at Columbia College Chicago, argues that the existence of monsters have a purpose in our lives. It is not only to reveal our deepest fears, but to question our moral instincts. Being attacked by fictional monsters seems impractical, however, chaos and disasters do happen and exist in the real world. The creation of monsters is due to our reaction of our fears and the inability to control the world we live in. Asma states, "Monsters can stand as symbols of human vulnerability and crisis, and as such they play imaginative foils for thinking about our own responses to menace." This means that human weaknesses and fears are represented through monstrous figures, and these fictional situations provide perspective into how we react in fearful environments. In our current society we fear many things, including but not limited to failed or corrupt governmental systems, the afterlife, the unknown, and captivity, which makes this claim valid. Although we may not realize it, these fears are embodied by the horror monsters we see in popular culture. Society shares common fears, and often times the most prevailing fear is reflected in the most popular characters at any given time. Monsters are the fictional representations of society's dark subconscious, exploring not only why the author's statement is accurate but what we actually fear. The author clearly ...
