2. Media Production Processes (MS2)
This module counts for 50% of your AS grade.
It comprises 3 elements as follows:
• A pre-production (CD Cover Designs) reflecting research
and demonstrating planning techniques (20 marks)
• A production (Music Video) which has developed out of
the pre-production (40 marks)
• A report of 1200-1600 words (40 marks)
3. Evaluation Report
The report will accompany the pre-production and the production,
must be completed individually and will include:
• A discussion of the most significant research findings which
informed the CD cover artwork.
• A brief justification (explanation with reasons) of the target
audience for the music video.
• An evaluation of the music video which highlights its strengths
and weaknesses through, for example, comparison with existing
media products.
These requirements are explained in more detail on the following
slides.
4. 1. Research & Planning
You must explain how you used your research to plan your pre-
production.
• Outline and explain the research you did before beginning your CD
cover artwork (e.g. analysing existing media products, conventions
of genre, target audience consumption, likes and needs)
• Outline and explain the planning you did for the CD cover artwork
(e.g. mood boards, sketch designs, templates, appropriate
software)
5. 2. Target Audience
• Describe your target audience (e.g. age, social class, gender,
interests, consumption of media and other products)
• Give reasons for choosing this audience and explain how your
music video has been constructed to appeal to them. You should
be able to link your visuals to genre, representation, and
symbolism.
• Refer to the feedback you gathered about the CD cover and how
you used this in planning the video.
6. 3. Evaluation
Evaluate your music video, making sure you:
• Explain your contribution: which aspects of the video are you
responsible for?
• Discuss how your video evolved from the research and planning
for the CD cover. How do they link together? How did the CD
artwork inspire the video?
• Include the music video theory which helped you plan (e.g.
Carlsson’s categories). How did what you read influence your
ideas?
• Ask a sample of your target audience for feedback and explain
what you found out through this.
7. 3a. Comparison With Existing Products
Compare your production with music videos (or other, similar ones)
you analysed as part of your initial research. Do this by exploring its
strengths:
• What have you done well/effectively?
• Which technical/creative aspects have you started to master (e.g.
use of equipment/software)?
• Which parts look most professional? Highlight key similarities with
existing music videos.
• Explain the ways you have chosen to use, adapt or reject
conventions of your chosen genre. Give reasons for your
decisions.
Give examples from your work for all points.
8. 3B. Comparison With Existing Products
Compare your production with music videos (or other, similar ones)
you analysed as part of your initial research. Do this by exploring its
weaknesses:
• What technical or creative problems did you encounter? Were
there any you couldn’t overcome?
• What doesn’t work well? Why not?
• What did other people (e.g. target audience) feel didn’t work well?
• What prevents your video from looking like a professional music
video?
9. 4. Improvements
• What could be done to improve your product?
• What would make it look more professional
(compared to existing products)?
• How could you make the improvements you have
identified?
10. Word Count
At the end of the report, add your name and the
word count to show your work is within the 1200-
1600 word limit.
You may need to edit your work to ensure not only
have you addressed all the points on the preceding
slides, but that you stay within the word limit.
