1. 5. How did you attract/address your
audience?
I carefully considered every element of my magazine
to ensure it would appeal to my audience as much as I
possibly could.
I was able to do this through two ways; By attracting
and addressing my audience.
2. Attracting
There are two main ways I was able to attract my audience where
through;
Photography
&
Headlines
Addressing
When I was done attracting my audience, I went on to address them. The
element that impacted the way my audience where addressed the most
was;
The mise en scene of photography
3. Photography
Through my research of existing media products of my genre, I found
that Kerrang! Attracted its audience through photography in the most
effective manner on the front cover.
On the front cover I used for inspiration to mine, they had used a midshot
portrait while maintaining eye contact. I used this same convention on the
front cover of my magazine because it creates a sense of closeness and
contact between the audience because the artist seems to be presenting
himself to the reader or potential consumer.
For my contents page, I used Q as inspiration and attempted to use some
of the conventions that they did because I felt that it worked very well
and I also appreciated the significant impact of the image manipulation
which I tried to replicate, also the page looked very neat and attractive in
the way it was set out.
The body language of my model on the front cover is very open, his head
is up and slightly tilted, suggesting confidence. He is in the centre and not
covering any part of his body on purpose. I followed these conventions
from the magazines that I had researched, and found that it was common
between most rock magazines.
4. Headlines
When analysing existing products, I found that the headline are usually quite
large, bold and of high contrast in comparison to the background. I decided to do
the same thing in my own product because headlines are one of the main factors
on the front cover that attracts your target audience to your product.
Having bold, striking and outstanding headlines can attract the audience from a
fairly long distance as it is appealing to look at.
However to attract a rock audience in particular like Kerrang! My headlines just
like most other existing products of my genre were mainly names of artists and
briefly, events that had occurred involving them, the main reason your audience
will buy a magazine is because of who is in them and why, and headlines can
provide this information, then the potential consumer may decide whether they
have been persuaded enough to purchase the media product.
5. Mise en Scene of Photography
Depending on whether the photography are live shots or studio
shots, when analysing existing media products such as Q and Kerrang! I
cam to the conclusion that costume, props and the setting of the
photographs were vital to correctly addressing the audience.
In my images, my model has messy black hair and is dressed in black
attire, this is a commonly used element in may existing products.
This can address the audience personally, because it is a stereotype that
the fans of rock music were black, this therefore means the artist is
reflecting the audience meaning the reader will feel welcomed and a
sense of belonging when reading or just viewing the magazine.
