Evaluation Question 4
Written by Jordan Jones
How did you use media technologies in the construction
and research, planning and evaluation stages?
 Compared to our AS production, this years production is extremely better on all
fronts. To start I had a larger say in what happened during production and
planning, this included the narrative and equipment. The biggest change would
have to be team work and how important it was during the production. Our team
this year more devoted and enthusiastic to do better and create better we used
this to strive towards the goals we set. We decided that we should start our own
company in which we donated money into which would later help us in buying
much needed equipment to enhance the quality of our production.
 To make this year better we wanted to get as much detail into our research as
possible, this involved trips to locations and very detailed location scouting to get
a better idea of how it operates and to record potential risks as well as writing
reports and interviewing our potential target audience.
 Digital Technology – Uploading And Data Storage.
We recorded a lot of our findings on paper and then uploaded them to our
shared drive so that we could all read and share the notes before filming.
Digitally uploading information is a lot easier and simple, it isn’t hard to lose and
it was very simple to organise and keep safe. This really helped in scheduling
and organization through out project which helped how we operated as a team
and how we completed the work.
Digital Technology – Uploading, Data
Storage And Planning
 We recorded a lot of our findings on paper and then uploaded
them to our shared drive so that we could all read and share the
notes before filming. Digitally uploading information is a lot
easier and simple, it isn’t hard to lose and it was very simple to
organise and keep safe. This really helped in scheduling and
organization through out project.
 Data Storage
We used a variation of data storage devices during our
production. From simple memory sticks and drives to local net
storage software these were vital in how we operated during
our project. After each part of planning from floor plans to call
sheets they were uploaded to our drop box, so that our actors,
directors had access to our information. This meant that we
were all organised and in sync with each other during the
production. We also made sure to keep back ups of all
information shared, so that if something unfortunate would to
happened we would have a failsafe.
 Our group also had a company file in which had all our raw
documents, ideas, sketches, and footage and any call sheets
and extra information like reports.
 During last years work we were primary used paper, which we
had a couple of problems with the information getting misplaced
or damaged. Using memory sticks and internet storage sites
really helped in the organisation and the structure of the end
project.
Digital Technology – Uploading, Data
Storage, Equipment, Book keeping and
Planning
 Planning
During the construction of our production we had to make certain documents and pieces that would play a vital part in
understanding how the production should go. Our scripts were written on a special script writing software called Celtx.
 Which enabled us to use more specialist methods of stage directing and insight. This showed our group the direction and
a brief idea of what we want the show to be like. We also used Celtx to write our ancillary projects. Compared to our AS
method of writing on Microsoft word it was a lot hard to envision the production or scene. Using celtx helped our group
envision a scene which helped with the production itself.
 Equipment
Capturing equipment
This year has been very educational and new in terms of equipment. Instead of depending on Nikon cameras I invested
in a new Cannon D100 as well as a range of adobe editing and production software's. Using a my own camera helped in
terms of quality as I was able to change the rate of capture. From 720p to 1080p HD, it was a massive leap from AS.
Having this new technology also required that I learnt a bit more about cinematography and how to use Adobe Editing
Software. As well as learning it myself our group has also bought the software and have learnt how to use it at a basic
level. Using these technologies through the course has enabled me to capture superb footage and to use more specialist
methods of editing. We also bought some tripods which were really useful in interviews and establishing shots. Using
more steady and adaptable equipment made it easy for the type of shot we want and require. We did have one if our
previous project but it was too small and it was not steady enough on the legs.
 Capturing footage, Project and Evaluation
We filmed our project with two different cameras, the Nikon D1500 and the Cannon D100. W made sure to only film with
the cannon as it had far more features to work with to get optimal quality throughout the show. We used the Nikons for
still shots mostly such as the interview scenes, but with more scenes that required more colour and better frame rate and
qaluity we used the Cannon. We used the cannons system of looking back as well as a variety of modes such as manual
and auto in some cases.
Audio Capturing equipment
another vital part of kit we invested in were several audio recording devices which were far better at recording clean
sound instead of camera audio recorders that have proven to be unreliable. Using our Zoostorm Recorders we were able
to record more clean and specific sounds, like voice and the environment. This gave our production an edge in the audio
quality as it felt more like a BBC show with the good audio compared to our AS project that had poor audio and camera
work.
Digital Technology – Uploading, Data
Storage, Equipment, Book keeping and
Planning
 Adobe Software – Photoshop
During our marketing campaign and ancillary tasks we used Photoshop to make and create advertising
materials such as posters and cover photos for social media. Photoshop was important in the construction of
advertisement and our ancillary posters.
Adobe Software – Lightroom
Adobe lightroom was very useful in the creation of our posters as we could change all properties of the photo in
one place and then edit the photo in Photoshop. We also used lightroom for other project as well.
Adobe Software – Premier Pro
Premier Pro is our main editing software we used during post production. It was vital in editing and construction
our production together. Premier provided the group with many benefits: More audio channels, more effects,
special effects and more creativity.
Adobe Software – Aftereffects
To get a better look at effects we used Aftereffects to get edit in effects to the assembled production during post
production. Aftereffects was successful in delivering an easy and productive package, it was easy to use and
follow.
Adobe Software – Illustrator
Illustrator is what we used for logo design and for some of newspread and for our posters. We used it so that
we have more control over what goes into our ancillary and advertising material.
Using this vast amount of software has taught me how to edit and create material from scratch. From camera
to computer.
 Digital Book keeping and cataloguing
We had to keep a catalogue and various schedules while filming to keep organised, we did this by mostly using
Microsoft software like Word, Powerpoint and Excel. Making production schedules as well as a form of register
was useful making sure everyone was present and that we were keeping to our schedule. We also sued excel
for finances and simple budgeting throughout to keep an eye on how much we are spending weekly.
