New media technologies played a key role in the construction, research, planning and evaluation of Elliot Tedstill's advanced portfolio project. Storyboards were drawn on paper and then photographed and uploaded to a blog to serve as filming guidelines. Extensive online research was done using YouTube to analyze film trailers. Scenes were filmed using small, portable DV cameras which allowed for efficient filming. iMovie was used to edit the trailer, adding and cutting shots as well as transitions. Photoshop was used to design a poster and magazine cover from digital photographs.

2. 4. HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES
IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH,
PLANNING AND EVALUATION?
• New media technologies were used heavily during the construction
and research, planning and evaluation.
• Story boards had first been drawn up on paper, but a photo of the
story boards had been taken with a digital camera, those photos
were then uploaded to my blog on the internet, this was very useful
as it acted as a guideline for the filming of the actual product.

3. • The blog was also used to post various other items
related to coursework, such as film trailer analyses and
a word processed script.
• The internet played a huge part in the research of the
product, as I had extensively used the website
‘YouTube’ to analyse film trailers, so that I could use
elements from the trailers in my own.

4. • The filming of the product itself was on small DV cameras, both
JVC cameras and Canon cameras. These cameras were
incredibly easy to use, which was useful as it meant that less
time was spent setting up the shot; therefore we could focus
more on the content of the shot, compared to the shot itself.
• The lightweight cameras were also useful in the sense that they
were incredibly compact and could be operated in one hand,
this was incredibly useful to my project as the camerawork for
the trailer had to look as if it was a person’s own recordings of
his day, a feat that would be troublesome with full sized
cameras.

5. • However, the cameras did have their limitations, we had
encountered this when attempting to film in a darkened area,
the quality of the shot had left much to be desired, as it was
impossible to make sense of the set amongst the shadows,
these shots were ultimately discarded.

6. • In terms of editing, I had used iMovie to edit the trailer. In the
editing process I had added and cut various shots whilst also
including some transitions to smoothen the progression of the
trailer.
• I found this process to be rather simple, it was only on one or
two occasions where I had difficulty, and that was whilst I was
trying to import a transition that did not want to cooperate. I had
ended up pursuing a different edit for that particular part of the
trailer.

7. • For the ancillary tasks, I had used Photoshop to turn two photos
taken with a digital camera into a poster and a magazine cover.
At first I found this task quite daunting as I had only got a set
amount of time to get familiar with the tools at my disposal and
us them effectively.
• I feel that my final product was acceptable and had looked how I
had intended it to based on early sketches.
