Evaluation question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and
                              evaultion stages?

Blog:

For the duration of the construction of our music video, me and Jamie both uploaded
research, idead and feedback to our blogs using blogger.

We both used this resource to interface with many parties, share ideas with fellow media
students and post valuable information regarding the progress of our video. This was an
extremely helpful tool in keeping work organised during the entire process.

Blogger was also great to be able to use many technical media aspects – embedding vide
and sideshare files, along with choosing layout and adding working into folders (labels).
Blogger allowed for a neat display of work which looked good and most importantly made
relevant posts easy to find, and other easy to edit if necessary.

The picture (Below) shows the use of slideshare, one of the many useful features of using
this blog tool.
Music Video:

   - Camera

We used 2 camera for our shoot, as we felt this would give us greater flexibility not only
with time, but we could simultaneously capture the same scene from two angles, allowing
transitions between the two.

The cameras we used were the Sony HVR-HD1000E and the handheld Sony handicam also.
The HVR allowed us two capture high quality footage, and worked for the more static shots
of the video. We also had a tripod for this camera which was used for a large portion of the
videos. This camera was especially helpful in capturing our statics as well as many of our
panning shots (due to the functionality of the tripod). This camera was somewhat bulky
compared to the handicam, but it was an incredibly useful tool in constructing our music
video!

The Handicam allowed for some shots that the HVR wouldn’t permit due to its size issues.
The handicam was great for the point of view shots, and more movement focused shots
also.

Both of these camera used Digital DV tapes, and recorded high quality video that was easy
to transfer to the Apple macs we used to review and edit footage. These pieces of
technology were essential to our video as they allowed us to shoot all the footage we
needed.

   - Lighting

While discussing all the equipment we needed for the shoot, me and Jamie made the
decision not to use artificial lighting on set. This was for numerous reasons including
transport, cost and a lack of power source in our set location. However, lighting was altered
at the editing phase to give us the light effects we want, and we also used the natural light
in a number of our shots to give the desired effect. The style of the video was dark and grim
in any case, so added lighting was never really necessary.

   - Sound

The track we used was kindly provided for free by the artist Mirrored Theory. There was a
link in the description of his YouTube video for this track. This technology allowed us to find
and obtain our chosen song. Without the internet and services such as YouTube we would
have never had this chance, in this way technology was essential. All digetic sound was
removed when we added our footage to Final Cut Express, and replaced with our chosen
song.
- Editing

When editing our music video, technology was completely at the heart of it. Without this
tool our video would have been barely recognizable from what our true end product was.
The editing was completed using Final Cut Express on an Apple iMac.

Me and Jamie both had limited knowledge of how to use final cut at the start of this project,
only our limited experience from our thriller production at the end of our AS course. I
personally had some applicable experience from my own editing experience, but this was
using different software, so i also had to get to grips with it.

As our editing process developed both myself and Jamie became fairly adept with the basic
tools needed to create our video, later developing more advanced skills using the software.

Within Final Cut we used many of the filters and level adjustments in the more complicated
elements of video editing to get the desired effect from our videos. We also used multiple
layers in order to create many of the complicated jumps and other sequences. Effects such
as ‘Overdrive’ when edited by me and Jamie gave us the desired effect in the brick throw
shot. Without this technology there’s no real way we could have created a professional and
impacting feel to this sequence.

Editing with this software allowed us to create tone, excitement and understanding within
our video. Dream and reality sequences would have been near impossible, or at least
difficult to interpret. Through the use of this technology we managed to portray our
narrative clearly and in an interesting and unusual way.
