EVALUATION
QUESTION 1: IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE,
DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS?
In my media product I have developed the forms and conventions of real media products by
making the image stand out with a white stroke around the outline. Usually in a magazine
there would be a glow around the image, but I have made the fact that she is not actually in
front of the yellow background clear. Usually music magazines have their main feature
covering the name of their magazine because it is not necessary for it to be visible because
people know what the magazine is.
In my media product one way I have used forms and conventions of real media
products is by having the price at the bottom of the page in several different
currencies (from when it is sold around the world)

taken from my magazine
and to the right is taken
from an edition of Billboard,
the edition of Billboard
displays the US, Canadian
and UK prices, similar to
mine. My magazine cover
also has a barcode as one
would when being sold.
Another way I have used forms and conventions of real media products in my
magazine is by including links to websites or Twitter/Instagram feeds this way
people can keep up to date with when the magazine’s newest issue is coming out.
The comparison bellow is between my magazine and Blender magazine with Alicia
Keys.
QUESTION 2: HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

I have used familiar brands in my
magazine to appeal to a younger
generation. MTV is one of the most
popular brands in the world and has
a very recognisable logo, it is also
heavily related to Pop/R&B, which
relates to the magazine. For example
the MTV logo would not be
associated with a Jazz magazine.
The competition in my magazine
relates to the audience, because
Beats are music-related and
extremely popular in the R&B/rap
areas of music because they are
designed and owned by a rapper
Linking the magazine to social media
was important especially because it
is mainly aimed at young people, and
people who have a presence on the
internet, instead of having the
website in small text at the bottom I
have made the fake Twitter and
Instagram handle bold and stand out.

company or organisation that is
accountable for a media text.
This could be through
marketing, production or
distribution.
A media conglomerate, media
group or media institution is a
company that owns large numbers
of companies in various mass
media such as television, radio,
publishing, movies, and the
Internet. Google
For example Bauer Media is an
institution that distributes many
music magazines. It owns a
50% stake in BOX Television.
Bauer Media also own radio
stations KISS 100 FM and
Absolute. Along with
magazines Q, KERRANG! and
Heat.

QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
Out of all the media institutions I have looked at I think Viacom Networks Europe would be the
most appropriate option to distribute my magazine (owner of MTV) because it is already
extremely popular in the UK (e.g. MTV). I also think that the company does not publish any
similar magazines to mine at the moment, they do not publish many magazines but, there is a
big gap in the market for one. My magazine also shows that it is joint with MTV by the relation to
MTV on the front page, and having an MTV television station

QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
I think that my magazine will sell well and be popular amongst MTV’s current ventures because
it is unique and not a replica or made to be in competition with a current magazine. Bauer media
was another appropriate option for my magazine because they have an extremely large group
of magazines, for example Q, Kerrang! And Heat, and also they do not have a magazine similar
to mine at the moment.
AN EXPANSION TO MY MEDIA
PRODUCT
QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
Bauer Media was another option they create Q magazine, along with Heat which have
branched out to other areas of the music industry for example, Heat is most known for it’s
magazine, however they do also have a TV channel and a radio station that play music. As
shown bellow I have created logos for a Replay radio station, TV channel (joint with MTV) and a
website. This allows the brand to grow and become more well known.
I could expand my magazine brand to a radio station: REPLAY FM, this will be similar to
something like Capital FM, that paly non-stop music related to the brand itself. Another thing I
have is the website, Replay.com, this will be a website where people can find exclusive content
and read articles from the magazine. Finally I have Replay TV, this will be a TV station that will
mainly play music videos but could expand to have reality TV shows similar to some current
music channels (e.g. MTV).

I have addressed my audience by the style of the magazine. The magazine stands out because of its
vibrant and bold font, and the images inside the magazine stand out because of the white stroke around
them. Another way I attracted my audience was by using bulletins on the front page with main
articles/things featured in the magazine. For example I have included a free download of a song that would
be popular amongst my audience – I used the words FREE in all capitals and bold because that word
automatically draws people in, then it has the particular song that is available to download, a symbol that
symbolises download and then a page number of where the download can be found. In terms of language
my magazine uses very simple language on the front cover because the message needs to be portrayed in
the most simplistic way and in a way that will automatically draw people in.

Evaluation - Question 3

  • 2. QUESTION 1: IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS? In my media product I have developed the forms and conventions of real media products by making the image stand out with a white stroke around the outline. Usually in a magazine there would be a glow around the image, but I have made the fact that she is not actually in front of the yellow background clear. Usually music magazines have their main feature covering the name of their magazine because it is not necessary for it to be visible because people know what the magazine is. In my media product one way I have used forms and conventions of real media products is by having the price at the bottom of the page in several different currencies (from when it is sold around the world) The picture to the left is taken from my magazine and to the right is taken from an edition of Billboard, the edition of Billboard displays the US, Canadian and UK prices, similar to mine. My magazine cover also has a barcode as one would when being sold. Another way I have used forms and conventions of real media products in my magazine is by including links to websites or Twitter/Instagram feeds this way people can keep up to date with when the magazine’s newest issue is coming out. The comparison bellow is between my magazine and Blender magazine with Alicia Keys.
  • 3. QUESTION 2: HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS? Video with voice over: I have used familiar brands in my magazine to appeal to a younger generation. MTV is one of the most popular brands in the world and has a very recognisable logo, it is also heavily related to Pop/R&B, which relates to the magazine. For example the MTV logo would not be associated with a Jazz magazine. The competition in my magazine relates to the audience, because Beats are music-related and extremely popular in the R&B/rap areas of music because they are designed and owned by a rapper Linking the magazine to social media was important especially because it is mainly aimed at young people, and people who have a presence on the internet, instead of having the website in small text at the bottom I have made the fake Twitter and Instagram handle bold and stand out.
  • 4. QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY? A media institution is a company or organisation that is accountable for a media text. This could be through marketing, production or distribution. A media conglomerate, media group or media institution is a company that owns large numbers of companies in various mass media such as television, radio, publishing, movies, and the Internet. Google For example Bauer Media is an institution that distributes many music magazines. It owns a 50% stake in BOX Television. Bauer Media also own radio stations KISS 100 FM and Absolute. Along with magazines Q, KERRANG! and Heat. MEDIA INSTITUTIONS British Broadcasting Company British Sky Broadcasting Disney-ABC Television Group News Corporation (owner of Fox Broadcasting Company, ITV and BSkyB.   • 6. MY MAGAZINE QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY? Out of all the media institutions I have looked at I think Viacom Networks Europe would be the most appropriate option to distribute my magazine (owner of MTV) because it is already extremely popular in the UK (e.g. MTV). I also think that the company does not publish any similar magazines to mine at the moment, they do not publish many magazines but, there is a big gap in the market for one. My magazine also shows that it is joint with MTV by the relation to MTV on the front page, and having an MTV television station
  • 7. VIACOM NETWORKS VS. BAUER MEDIA QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY? I think that my magazine will sell well and be popular amongst MTV’s current ventures because it is unique and not a replica or made to be in competition with a current magazine. Bauer media was another appropriate option for my magazine because they have an extremely large group of magazines, for example Q, Kerrang! And Heat, and also they do not have a magazine similar to mine at the moment.
  • 8. AN EXPANSION TO MY MEDIA PRODUCT QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY? Bauer Media was another option they create Q magazine, along with Heat which have branched out to other areas of the music industry for example, Heat is most known for it’s magazine, however they do also have a TV channel and a radio station that play music. As shown bellow I have created logos for a Replay radio station, TV channel (joint with MTV) and a website. This allows the brand to grow and become more well known. I could expand my magazine brand to a radio station: REPLAY FM, this will be similar to something like Capital FM, that paly non-stop music related to the brand itself. Another thing I have is the website, Replay.com, this will be a website where people can find exclusive content and read articles from the magazine. Finally I have Replay TV, this will be a TV station that will mainly play music videos but could expand to have reality TV shows similar to some current music channels (e.g. MTV).
  • 12. I have addressed my audience by the style of the magazine. The magazine stands out because of its vibrant and bold font, and the images inside the magazine stand out because of the white stroke around them. Another way I attracted my audience was by using bulletins on the front page with main articles/things featured in the magazine. For example I have included a free download of a song that would be popular amongst my audience – I used the words FREE in all capitals and bold because that word automatically draws people in, then it has the particular song that is available to download, a symbol that symbolises download and then a page number of where the download can be found. In terms of language my magazine uses very simple language on the front cover because the message needs to be portrayed in the most simplistic way and in a way that will automatically draw people in.
