3. Masthead
Large, simple, lower case, bold, sans serif style font
named - Champagne & Limousines. Purposely placed
underneath artist which shows his importance.
Catches the audiences eye straight away – this creates
brand awareness which is a common convention.

4. Main Image
Mid shot of artist, uses a direct mode of address
through eyes. This creates a personal relationship with
the audience and draws them in.
The model is in a similar age bracket to my target
audience (16-24 year olds, therefor the audience can
relate to the artist.
Single person shot – common convention.
Neutral facial expression
Infront of masthead – shows importance of artist.
Also a shallow depth of field, this creates a blurry
background which also helps make the subject stand
out.

6. House Style
The house style I chose actually challenged common
conventions which a typical music magazine would use,
which is a black, white and red colour scheme. I went for
softer colours like white and blue, and also grey and black.
This makes my magazine unique and stands out because it
is unconventional.

8. Masthead
Large, Bold text. Draws in the reader and
stands out against the background.
At the top centre of the page, which
follows conventions.
Use of upper case which is also a
common convention.

9. Images
The images I took were all mid shots/close up’s so their
facial expressions and body language were easily
visible.
The bottom 2 images use direct mode of address to
create an connection with the reader. (uses & grats)
Each image has straight edges and they don’t overlap
at all, this gives a professional look to the cover.
Existing media using similar conventions:
10. Numbering
- Organised text which is easy to find and read, this
allows the reader to find their indivual needs.
- Large numbers, which stand out over the background
and coloured images.
- Organised text which is easy to find and read, which
allows the reader to find individual needs.
- Informative of what is inside the magazine (uses &
grats)
- Links with the features articles and images.
- Isn’t too overpowering.
Similar conventions within existing media:
11. Page & Issue Month
- Very informative
- Easy to navigate
- Professional consistency in all issues.
12. Rows & Columns
There is a simplistic layout, which makes it
easier for the audience to navigate around
the page to find their individual needs
(cognitive needs).
In my research I found that most magazines
put their columns of text on one side of the
page and then photos on the opposite,
however I opted to go against this
convention by putting the 3rd image on the
right hand side of the page to break up the
text.
Existing media using columns:
13. Social Media
As my target audience are young adults, I
made a area for social media so the
audience can keep up to date between
the monthly issues. I found this a very
common convention in other magazines
aswell.

15. Image
I used a mid shot of the artist for my double
page spread – a very common convention in
many magazines.
Direct mode of address creates a personal
relationship between reader and artist (uses
and grats). This draws the reader in.

16. Layout
I used a regular convention for my double page
spread of having an image on one side while the
other side is all text. I did this so the image was
the most important part of the page and the
readers attention is diverted to it. The image is
large so it is eye catching.
I also used a common convention of relating the
text and image through the same colours,
developing the two pages relationship. As you
can see the yellow and brown match that of the
Ape’s head.
Magazines that use this convention:
17. Text The text in my double page spread is an
interview as I thought this would draw in
fans of the artist as they may be more
interested in what the actual artist has to
say, compared to the writer talking about
them. This isn’t a very common convention
but I thought it was appropriate for my
target audience.
Text is wrote in columns which is a very
common convention in many magazines,
this makes the text organised and makes it
look professional.
Existing double page spreads which use an
interview as the text:
18. Anchor text
The anchor text takes up just over 1/3 of
the page which makes it more eye
catching to the reader.
The artists name, ‘21’ Hawke stands out
as it is different coloured to the rest of the
text. The brown and yellow matching the
Ape’s colours, relating the pages.
Anchor text does follow an unconventional
layout, but is infact very similar to Vibe
