2. Characters
We used the protagonist in the trailer, on the poster and on the
magazine cover. The protagonist is the main feature in the actual
trailer, and this brings the focus onto her role in the narrative,
rather than the villains, which is exactly what we wanted to
portray, as often in horror films the focus is on the villain, rather
than the hero.
On the poster, you can see the protagonists hand holding the
mobile phone, and this used to make the audience think about the
connection between the character and the phone. Also, as it is a
darker shot, audiences will be reminded that this is a horror film,
and this uses binary oppositions when compared to the magazine
cover.
On the magazine cover, the protagonist is against a white backdrop
and this connotes ideas of her innocence, as we wanted our target
audience to sympathise with her. This is also enhanced by the angle
at which the photograph is taken from, and this reminiscent of
scenes in the trailer. I think that this works well, as overall the
atmosphere of the cover isn’t that of intimidation.
Using her on all the pieces was effective because it was a
recognisable way to connect the separate pieces.
3. Fonts
We used the same font on the poster and on the captions in the trailer, and by doing this we were able to create a sense
of similarity amongst the pieces. We used a font that was similar to that of the fonts used on mobile phones, as our target
audience would be familiar with it and this would keep them engaged with another aspect of the trailer and poster. As it
is bold and clear, it is easier for our audience to read and therefore comprehend its relevance.
4. Film Titles
For the trailer, magazine and poster we used the
exact same title that we had created, and this was
so that it was clear how the different pieces went
together. Also, we found whilst researching that
this was a common convention, and so by doing
this our pieces would look more cohesive, as all
pieces would hypothetically be used in one
advertising campaign. I think that this worked
well as it was also a way to tie in the same colour
scheme amongst all the auxiliary tasks, and the
repetition allows for audiences to gain a sense of
familiarity amongst the different pieces, and this
creates a strong brand.
5. Mise-en-Scene & Colour Scheme
We used similar mise-en-scene amongst the different
stages of our task, as this was another key way to make
the pieces link together, and so we used recurring imagery
of a mobile phone, and glitches. This is because they are
closely related, are fundamental to the narrative, and is
something that our target audience would be able to
recognise. This also solidifies the running themes across
our narrative, and I think that this works well as in our
feedback we found that our target audience were
responsive to its use.
The colour scheme that we used was cohesive, and the
use of green, white and black was used across all texts as
it is bright and eye-catching, and this is something that
our audience liked as it is reminded them of the glare that
you get from a phone screen.
6. Pull Quote
We used a similar pull quote, and caption
so that there were aspects of the villain in
our work. This is because the villain is
often portrayed in advertising campaigns of
horror films, and we wanted to follow
some conventions to make the separate
pieces more cohesive. It also establishes
themes across the narrative, which works
well because the repetition makes it seem
more scarier.
7. Overall, I think that the combination of the separate pieces was effective, as it
was clear that they all belonged to the same narrative and campaign. I think
that the most successful parts of this were the use of mise-en-scene and the
film title because this is something that our target audience would find easy to
recognise. I think that if were to improve the overall combination of the
separate tasks, I think that we could look into ways of making the poster show
more features of the characters, as this is something that audiences often
respond well to. I found that the most successful pieces were the were the
colour scheme of green, white, black and blue as they liked how it subverted
conventions of colour in the genre of horror. Also, the iconography of
technology being representative of danger and misfortune was something that
was common amongst the separate pieces.
