1. Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Iconography / Imagery : Both the mainproduct and
ancillaries1and2 create a sense of isolationand
escapism,throughthe inclusionof imagerysuchas
tunnels,bridgesandderelicturbanenvironments.
Tunnelsare a commonlyusedmetaphorfora
journeyfromone place toanother,commonlywith
a ‘lightat the endof the tunnel’.Inthe video,the
homelessmansitswithinthe tunnel of abridge,
beggingforchange.Thisportraysthe repetitive
motionof hislife,beingstuckwithinanendless
tunnel of isolationandoutwardignorance,andsothistunnel makesupalarge part of the imagery
withinthe CDdigi-packaswell. The genre of alternative rockisalsoapparentinthe use of an urban
settinginboththe ancillaryandmainproduct,as well asthe themesof entrapmentandescapism
whichare oftencommonamongstalternativerockartists.
Consistency:Use of blackand white editingcreatesaneffective
consistencythroughoutthe mainproductandthe ancillaries,
portrayingthe mentionedthemeswhichare apparentthroughoutall
three piecesasa result.Locationisanotherconsistentaspect,since
all videoclipsandphotographswere takeninandaroundthe same
area.Through this,andthe similaruse of iconographyandmise en
scene,synergyiscreatedthatlinksall of the productstogether.
Difficulties:Intermsof synergy,difficultywasfoundwhentryingto
translate the themesof the videointothe formof a CD digipackand
poster,as theyare generallyquite involvingandonlyreallyeasily
conveyedthroughuse of editing,suchascontinuationeditsto
portray the repetitionof hislife.Thissynergywasonlymade
possible throughthe use of iconographyandsimilarmise enscene,inthiscase the use of the tunnel
as a metaphorand consistentuse of photomanipulation.
