Evaluation Question 2
How effective is the combination of
your main product and the ancillary
texts?
• Ancillary products help to promote and publicise
the artist and the music that they are selling. My
main product that I made is a music video and the
ancillary products are a website and a digipak for
a band. Through research of existing band’s
ancillary products, I found that most bands follow
the same theme of their current music e.g. The
Script used the same logo and font on the album,
website and music video so I knew when creating
the ancillary products that there had to be a key
theme that all the products followed.

How effective is the combination of your main
product and the ancillary texts?
The website is where fans can get information and keep up to date with
what the band is doing. The website includes an info page where the
audience can find out more about the band, a gallery page where fans
can look at both live performance pictures and studio photography and
a tour page where they are able to see when the band is coming to their
city and there are links so it’s easy for them to buy tickets online. From
the uses and gratification theory, I know that the audience would be
using the website for person identity. They are looking at the band as
role models and want to become more like them, and see themselves
reflected in the music that the band make. The audience could also use
it for personal relationships. By having pictures and information about
the band and using informal language, the audience could feel that they
know the band and a sense of belonging.
How effective is the combination of your main
product and the ancillary texts?
On the website, the first thing that the audience sees is the name of the
band and the logo. This helps to introduce the audience to the website
and fans will instantly recognise the font and logo as the band’s style.
The colour scheme is what links all three of the products together. The
housestyle of the website follows a grey and white colour scheme
throughout the whole website. The use of the dark colours conforms to
the conventions of the rock genre. If we had used bright colours, the
website would look more for a pop group than a punk rock band.
The banner remains at the top of the
site on each page throughout the
website. For audiences that have just
discovered the band, this is good as
they are constantly reminded of the
band name and what the band logo
looks like.
How effective is the combination of your main
product and the ancillary texts?
For the digipak, we used the same colour scheme of quite dull colours.
The name of the band is written in grey and white, the same colours as
Like the website, the band name is on the top of the digipak. The white
font on “stay” stands out compared to the dark, dull colours on the rest
of the front cover, so the audience’s eyes are drawn to the name of the
artist, even though it’s not in the middle of the digipak where it would be
the main focus. It’s written in the same font that the “SH” on the logo are
written so it’s easily recognisable to fans.
the website and the logo. There’s also use of
scenery like in the music video. In the video, we
used scenery to set the scene and to break away
from narrative and performance. On the digipak,
we used the scenery to represent the journey that
the band has been on to make the album.
How effective is the combination of your main
product and the ancillary texts?
By combining all the products together, we are creating an image of the
band that we are putting across to the audience. From all three of the
products, it’s clear to the audience that the band is of the rock genre. All
the products show some sort of performance element in them. The
video has shots of the bands performing live, there are pictures on the
website of the band in concert and tour dates and the digipak insert
shows a picture of the guitarist of the band playing the guitar. The
constant use of performance creates the image that the website Is
serious about making music and that they interact with their fans by
putting on gigs.
