Uses: Basic Layout
Mast head at the top, anchorage
text second biggest thing on page, a
circular (or star in my case) shaped
    sticker thing to advertise other
things, ‘Plus’ section, banner at the
        bottom indicating further
               information.
Picture with one thing as the focal
point. Statue of Liberty with no
head on the left, the camera on
mine to the right. A tag line to do
with the film, indicated the alien in
 Cloverfield, and something about
the camera on mine. A specific
release date on the left, but I
wanted mine to be used as an
early-stage poster, before a release
           date is known.
Uses: Teaser Trailer
I used a basic non-linear layout for my trailer, with it starting on a scream, then going to a romantic style
with the couple. The trailer then speeds up with some quick swapping between different panicking shots.

This is a shot that flashes up and hits the camera very
quickly at the start of the teaser. This type of shot is
seen a lot in teaser trailers to freak the audience out
and get them on edge straight away.

Similar to this shot in Cloverfield. For three a very short split
second in this film a famous monster from three different
films flash up. They are not quite as noticable as my one, but
they still work by freaking out the audience. Underneath that
picture is also one of the flashing ‘holiday’ images from the
dead characters in the film ‘Sunshine’.

This is a shot of the main character in my
film checking if the camera is working. This
shows the audience that it is a hand-held
camera, and not just shoddy camera work.
Uses: Teaser Trailer continued
This is one of the inter-titles from my teaser trailer. By saying ’last
chance’ it signifies that this may be the end if a new equilibrium is
not produced or the ‘enemy’ or antagonist is not defeated. However
in most horror films, unless it’s the correct sub-genre, there is not an
enemy and no new equilibrium is produced. However telling the
audience that there may not be another chance will frighten them.

This is a shot from one of the panicking scenes in my
teaser trailer. Similar to the shot below, with the light
focusing on the characters face, it shows the panic and
                                                       desperation of the character

That explanation goes with this picture as well. Stuck in a dark
room with a poorly functioning light is a distress for anyone. So to
see someone else in that situation puts people, even those who
are watching it on a TV, on edge and making them almost feel the
                  same distress as this character.
Development

The one thing that I think my magazine has developed in terms of
conventions of real media products is the use of the mast head.
On the right is another issue of Empire magazine. This is
one of the more creative mast heads I have seen on
Empire. The point I am trying to get across is that on most,
if not all magazine mast heads are just text, with slight
variation depending on the story or type of issue.
Empire on the left is written to look like blood. Which is a
good effect because the Empire title is always in red anyway.
But also in the film Kick-Ass the protagonist gets beaten up a
lot. On the left is my magazine. I have developed this idea of
using a creative mast head by integrating a film-style image
into the mast head. I have used a film reel (hence the name ‘Reel’ Time) and typed the lettering into the
boxes of the film reel. I think that although this means that the text has to be smaller, because it is the
only magazine I have seen with a mast head being an image, it would stand out more easily on a shelf
and therefore attract more people to read it.
Development: Trailer

The very last shot of my trailer consists of the camera being on the floor, with a grainy filter looking at a
pool of blood growing towards the camera. There are shots similar to this in other films where the
character who had the camera drops it, but I think I challenged it because my trailer doesn’t show who was
holding the character, or even anyone in the same room. The camera then flickers out and dies, showing
more death and that the trailer itself has sort of died too.
Challenges

For this part I’m going to talk about my teaser trailer first.

The thing that I think challenges natural conventions the most is the shot of the couple with the mysterious
                                         character in the background.

Some teaser trailers do have something like this to subtly tell part of the story, or to discretely show what is
killing everyone. For example in the trailer for a film called “The Unborn” there were small snippets of the
child who was killing everyone, but no clear shots of it.
I tried to recreate that to its extreme, making the character in the background quite hidden. Everyone I
have shown my teaser trailer to has only noticed him on the second or more showing. Which is good
because it makes the audience want to re-watch the trailer thinking “wait, did I see something then?”
Challenges: Poster

The slogan is what I think challenges the conventions of a poster the most. Below is my poster.

Most posters use a slogan to do with Put the production label in the top
the film on the poster. I challenged it by corner, as opposed to a credit block
using a slogan made by the famous film at the bottom. Which brings me onto
actor Cesar Romero. “The camera never another point about there being no
lies” was the original quote, but I credit block.
modified it slightly, (but with a rhyming Basically every poster for a film has a
word so it still has the same phonetics), credit block to say who made it, who
so it says ‘dies’ not lies’. This then links produced it, who acted in it, who
with the film industry straight away with wrote and played the music... All that
a famous actor, but with a slogan that stuff that hardly anyone wants to
freaks out and disorientates the read, which is why they are always
audience; straight away talking about written in a strange font style. By not
death. having one I have challenged that
convention and taken away part of
the poster that hardly anyone wants
to read, leaving more room for
                                                                          important things. Like slogans...

Evaluation question 1

  • 1. Uses: Basic Layout Mast head at the top, anchorage text second biggest thing on page, a circular (or star in my case) shaped sticker thing to advertise other things, ‘Plus’ section, banner at the bottom indicating further information. Picture with one thing as the focal point. Statue of Liberty with no head on the left, the camera on mine to the right. A tag line to do with the film, indicated the alien in Cloverfield, and something about the camera on mine. A specific release date on the left, but I wanted mine to be used as an early-stage poster, before a release date is known.
  • 2. Uses: Teaser Trailer I used a basic non-linear layout for my trailer, with it starting on a scream, then going to a romantic style with the couple. The trailer then speeds up with some quick swapping between different panicking shots. This is a shot that flashes up and hits the camera very quickly at the start of the teaser. This type of shot is seen a lot in teaser trailers to freak the audience out and get them on edge straight away. Similar to this shot in Cloverfield. For three a very short split second in this film a famous monster from three different films flash up. They are not quite as noticable as my one, but they still work by freaking out the audience. Underneath that picture is also one of the flashing ‘holiday’ images from the dead characters in the film ‘Sunshine’. This is a shot of the main character in my film checking if the camera is working. This shows the audience that it is a hand-held camera, and not just shoddy camera work.
  • 3. Uses: Teaser Trailer continued This is one of the inter-titles from my teaser trailer. By saying ’last chance’ it signifies that this may be the end if a new equilibrium is not produced or the ‘enemy’ or antagonist is not defeated. However in most horror films, unless it’s the correct sub-genre, there is not an enemy and no new equilibrium is produced. However telling the audience that there may not be another chance will frighten them. This is a shot from one of the panicking scenes in my teaser trailer. Similar to the shot below, with the light focusing on the characters face, it shows the panic and desperation of the character That explanation goes with this picture as well. Stuck in a dark room with a poorly functioning light is a distress for anyone. So to see someone else in that situation puts people, even those who are watching it on a TV, on edge and making them almost feel the same distress as this character.
  • 4. Development The one thing that I think my magazine has developed in terms of conventions of real media products is the use of the mast head. On the right is another issue of Empire magazine. This is one of the more creative mast heads I have seen on Empire. The point I am trying to get across is that on most, if not all magazine mast heads are just text, with slight variation depending on the story or type of issue. Empire on the left is written to look like blood. Which is a good effect because the Empire title is always in red anyway. But also in the film Kick-Ass the protagonist gets beaten up a lot. On the left is my magazine. I have developed this idea of using a creative mast head by integrating a film-style image into the mast head. I have used a film reel (hence the name ‘Reel’ Time) and typed the lettering into the boxes of the film reel. I think that although this means that the text has to be smaller, because it is the only magazine I have seen with a mast head being an image, it would stand out more easily on a shelf and therefore attract more people to read it.
  • 5. Development: Trailer The very last shot of my trailer consists of the camera being on the floor, with a grainy filter looking at a pool of blood growing towards the camera. There are shots similar to this in other films where the character who had the camera drops it, but I think I challenged it because my trailer doesn’t show who was holding the character, or even anyone in the same room. The camera then flickers out and dies, showing more death and that the trailer itself has sort of died too.
  • 6. Challenges For this part I’m going to talk about my teaser trailer first. The thing that I think challenges natural conventions the most is the shot of the couple with the mysterious character in the background. Some teaser trailers do have something like this to subtly tell part of the story, or to discretely show what is killing everyone. For example in the trailer for a film called “The Unborn” there were small snippets of the child who was killing everyone, but no clear shots of it. I tried to recreate that to its extreme, making the character in the background quite hidden. Everyone I have shown my teaser trailer to has only noticed him on the second or more showing. Which is good because it makes the audience want to re-watch the trailer thinking “wait, did I see something then?”
  • 7. Challenges: Poster The slogan is what I think challenges the conventions of a poster the most. Below is my poster. Most posters use a slogan to do with Put the production label in the top the film on the poster. I challenged it by corner, as opposed to a credit block using a slogan made by the famous film at the bottom. Which brings me onto actor Cesar Romero. “The camera never another point about there being no lies” was the original quote, but I credit block. modified it slightly, (but with a rhyming Basically every poster for a film has a word so it still has the same phonetics), credit block to say who made it, who so it says ‘dies’ not lies’. This then links produced it, who acted in it, who with the film industry straight away with wrote and played the music... All that a famous actor, but with a slogan that stuff that hardly anyone wants to freaks out and disorientates the read, which is why they are always audience; straight away talking about written in a strange font style. By not death. having one I have challenged that convention and taken away part of the poster that hardly anyone wants to read, leaving more room for important things. Like slogans...
