In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
 My music magazine uses conventions of real media products in a number of ways. On the front cover, the masthead is in a
standard conventional bold, sans-serif font spaced out in capital letters across the top of the page. This is similar to the
‘David Bowie’ magazine that I analysed during my Research – I chose to make my magazine conform to this style of
masthead because I thought it was simple yet it would effectively catch my audiences’ attention if my magazine were on a
shelf. This conventional style of masthead therefore means because my audiences’ attention was initially hooked from seeing
it, they would be more likely to pick up my magazine out of curiosity to find out more information about it and potentially
buy it.
 My music magazine also uses conventions of real media products through the main cover line on my front cover. This is
placed in a bold, unique typography across the main image that it links to. This is similar to ‘Q’ magazine that I analysed in
my Research, where the main cover line is also relating to the main image on the front cover. I wanted to include this feature
in my magazine because it makes it easier for readers to anchor meaning to the image through the text and makes my front
cover simple and easy to read. However when designing my front cover I developed the use of the main cover line used on
‘Q’ - on ‘Q’ magazine the main cover line was in the same font to that of the other cover lines, but I decided to use a
different font to that of my other cover lines and use one of a handwritten, sketchy style. I felt like this made it stand out
more on my front cover as it is a more unique, creative font and therefore draw in my audiences’ attention more, effectively
making them want to pick up my magazine to read it.
 However my music magazine also challenges conventions of real media products. Through my Research where I analysed
magazines, a conventional feature I discovered was a caption next to the main image on the double-page spread. I decided not
to include this on my double-page spread however as I felt that this would draw away the attention from the main image and
because I decided to use a pull quote on top of the main image it would look as if there was too much text. This would make
my magazine lose its professionalism and make the page look ‘cluttered’, making the reading of my magazine for my readers
less smooth and simple.
 I also challenged conventional features of real media products by only using one photo on my double-page spread. Through
my magazine analyses I noticed that conventionally music magazines have more than one image on their double-page spreads;
however I chose to subvert this by only using one image and making it the main feature that the readers attention would be
drawn to first. I did this by editing it on Photoshop and making the contrast, exposure and brightness of the image at levels
that made it stand out alongside the main body of text of the article.
