Evaluation Q.3
What have you learned from your audience
feedback ?
•

After finishing my music video I got a lot of feedback, but most helpful to me was the information I got
before filming and storyboarding. The interviews and questionnaires were really helpful because it helped
me find out what my target audience wanted to see and what and what not I should put into my music
video.

Target Audience Interview Questions: Halima Dada
1. What type of music do you like ? Mainstream music
2. What is your favourite genre ? R&B music
3. Why do you like it so much ? It touches me, I can relate to the music a lot because it talks about
everyday issues and I also see R&B music as my escape from everyday issues.
4. Who is your favourite artist ? Chris Brown
5. Why do you like them so much ? He's fit/hot and if you are pretty and look good music sells because the
audience you pick up is mainly young girls and women of probably all ages. Also his songs relate to
everyday life situations, from girls, to his struggles, and helping others.
6. Do you enjoy most about R&B music, do you enjoy the emotion of the music? yeah, it contains some
aspects of comedy, there are also a number of stars involved, like for example you'd see Trey Songz in one
of his videos. There is also dancing involved which makes it even more entertaining. Also the costumes are
very interesting and the narrative and stories are also very interesting.
7. What do you think about R&B videos today ? captivating, iconic, entertaining,
8. What would you like to see in an R&B video ? they show everything I like to see today.
9. Do you think what you see in R&B videos today attracts audience's ? yeah depends on the audience, for
example I don't think 50 year olds would watch R&B music videos.

RnB music is very common in mainstream music. Most people listen to R&B and they have a very wide
demographic ranging from people of different races, to people of all ages. An artist of that sort of
spectrum like Beyoncé for example has one of the widest fan bases in the world moving from Europe,
America, Asia and even Africa. My target audience interview showed me that they mostly listen to
mainstream music because they can relate to their music because it talks about everyday issues also they
listen to artists who look good like Chris Brown for example who entices the female audience has a large
fan base of females. Also music videos of the R&B genre are very popular and people like them as they are
already. That is why for my video I decided to go along with the stereotype of R&B music videos which
people already find interesting and maybe add one or two more things when it comes to effects.

•

At first, I decided to go along with the Hip-Hop genre this was because I felt that it would be easier to find
a target audience and it would be easier to film a video that would meet my demographics and target
audience. But at the end of the day I found out that where I am at the moment does not have a large
number of people listening to the music of my genre. So I decided to go with the next best thing. I decided
to do a music video of R&B genre because that is most liked and has a bigger fan base and audience. At
the end of the day I found out that I met the needs of my target audience and they also felt the same way.

Formative feedback was also very important. In class we had the opportunity to go over our videos in front of the whole
class who then gave us feedback on their opinions of what they did like and what they didn’t like. Which then gave me the
opportunity to go back and change little bits of the video that the audience felt needed touching up and things I felt could be
better.
Another thing we did was show our feedback to the whole school and get feedback from them, so not only from our class
but about over a hundred other student and teachers. Another person whose opinions were highly needed were those of
the drama teacher who not only critiqued the video but also critiqued our acting skills which also played a major role in my
music video which included both narrative and performance.

Another very helpful source was fro YouTube, a major critique came from this popular media social website. They have the
right tools to show how well the video is doing and how people feel about it.
Putting the video up on YouTube shows how many people have watched the video and how many people liked it. Most
music videos have a specific channel which promotes their videos like a VEVO page, but since I didn’t have that I had to
promote the video through my blog. I didn’t feel I could promote it any more because I was a bit sceptical of my friends
seeing my video.

From the information here it shows me that even
without the promotion my music video seems to
be doing pretty well on YouTube and it also shows
how wide my demographic and target audience is.
It also has a thumbs up, at least it’s better that a
thumbs down 

After going back home for Christmas break I got the chance to show the music video to some of the
members of my family and get a lot more feedback from them. Some of the feedback I got was:
You were a little too stiff
I didn’t feel the costume was flashy enough
You could have used a little more make up
You could have used a different location
Why did you use Drake ? 

Most of the feedback I got had to do with like the minor little details that had to do with the music videos.
My mum for example felt that I was a little too stiff during the performance scene, not showing enough
emotion in the song which was all clearly about emotion.
Another problem she has was with the lack of ‘glamour’, she felt I was not wearing enough make up and
not wearing flashy clothes. This I then had to explain about my choice for simplicity. Which doesn’t exactly
go against the genre but make it easier for me and more comfortable for me to perform the song.

If I was to film my music video again there would be a lot of things I would change.
First think I would change, that I wish I could change now was using the picture of
Drake in the picture frame sort of displaying him as my boyfriend. I thought it
would be funny and maybe even cute but at the end of the day it ended up looking
very weird and ‘stalkersih’. But it ended up being too late to change it
Another thing I would have changed was the performance scene. One form of
critique I took in the most was the feedback from my mum saying I was a bit too
stiff during the performance. If I could do it again I would be a little more fluid and
more intimate with the song.
Another thing I would change might be the location of the narrative aspect of the
music video. Due to doing things last minute I found it quite hard to find a perfect
location for the narrative of the song, The room chosen was a bit small and I would
have liked to use a bigger location.
• I think the best part of my music video was the performance scene. This
went along with the stereotype of the typical R&B genre also adding a
little flavour to the narrative. This made the music video more interesting
and showed the audience the emotion coming out of the song by the
main protagonist. It also showed the creative aspect of the music video
showing how I could make the costume, background, and lighting work.
