Question 2: How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
Who Have You Represented?
 My magazine represents theatre kids, specifically those
interested in musical theatre
 My magazine is aimed at any gender, however it has a
female bias as all of the photos are of the same artist,
who is female, and most of the artists mentioned are
female, but a few male artist’s names can be seen on
the cover and contents page
 The age represented is young adults, though people of
any age could read the magazine, a younger audience
may not be as interested
How Have You Represented Them?
 I have represented these social groups through
the clothes the artist is wearing, she is wearing
a t-shirt with a well known quote from a popular
musical
 The way she stands in this photograph also
shows that she is a theatre kid as the pose is
one that is seen frequently in musical theatre
 Libby is presented as a happy and light
character, she isn’t seen as being angry, edgy
or dark, this is how artists in the musical theatre
genre are often portrayed
Cover
 Libby is presented on the cover as a
middle class young adult, who seems to
be relaxed
 Her facial expression makes her seem
serious, which shows the reader that
she is serious about her music career
 The clothes she is wearing are what
most fans of the musical theatre genre
would wear, which shows that she is a
big fan of the genre, as well as being an
artist
Contents
 The other artists I chose to feature in
my magazine are ones who are
currently very popular within the genre,
which could make the main artist,
Libby, seem overshadowed, but could
also show the readers that the writers
of the magazine think that Libby is just
as good as the other artists
 The way that she is stood in the
photograph makes her seem quite
confident and strong, showing that she
is not shy and believes in her musical
ability
Article
 The artist is wearing different clothes in this photograph, she is in
the clothes that her character would wear, which associates her
with the show she is in
 The title of the article “The Wicked New Star, Libby Regan” also
associates her with the musical as the name of the musical,
‘Wicked’ is included as a pun in the title
 The article presents Libby as a humble artist, who didn’t expect
such a large positive response to her singing. It also gives a
message to less confident young people that although they may
not believe in their ability right now, they are still good enough to
do anything, as long as they out their mind to it
