HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
RACE
•Our films genre, thriller, usually has a predominantly white
cast but there are also quite a few films that star other
ethnicities. We chose our main character to be Asian and we
thought this fits with our title, “Outsider.”
•Our two villains(chasers) are of different ethnicities, one
being white and the other being black. We chose to do this
as it is set in London and London is a very multi-ethnic
society.
• Also Asians are often related to, stereotyped, either being
quite poor or being in gangs and this is another reason we
chose our hero to be Asian.
GENDER
• Thrillers, typically, all have male leading cast. This is
because thriller films contain very masculine
conventions such as violence, dominance, alcohol and
drugs. Our film is an action thriller and action films are
generally viewed by male audiences.
• It is stereotypical that henchman, gangsters and agents
are male and not female. We did not challenge this
convention as men's lives are stereotypically based on
working and so we thought having a male do a job would
be more realistic.
AGE
• Our cast are all teenagers, aged between 16 and 17,
common stereotypes of teenagers are that they’re
related to gangs and getting into trouble. To create
verisimilitude we chose to use black hoodies as these
are also commonly related to teenagers who are
involved in gangs and violence.
SOCIAL CLASS
• The film is based on the working class. It has only one
feature of someone above working class and that is the
boss of the two henchman. Other than this every character
is of the working class and this is to go with the setting we
used, the suburbs of London.
• We chose to do this as it helps the films verisimilitude. Also
helps the film feels more brutal and serious. This can also
relate to those who maybe live this lifestyle of being in
working class or grew up being in gangs and shock those
who do not know anything about the lives of the working
class or gangs.
