Evaluation of main task
How does our media film develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Our film doesn’t challenge any forms or conventions as when people choose to watch a romantic-comedy they want the specific conventions that they all entail. We used the convention of the main characters missing each other at the beginning of the film. They noticed each other but complications got in the way. This type of opening is used in such Romantic comedies as ‘monster in law.’ Another convention we used is that of the first kiss between the main characters. The audience of this type of film look for the kiss between the two main characters and the last and final kiss after all the complications is the happy ever after.
The main first kiss What the audience wait for.
How does our media product represent particular social groups? Our film is teen rom-com. The social group that is represented is teenagers. This is because the protagonists are both young characters exploring love and playing around with food. Food is used a lot in romantic comedies as it can be portrayed in a sexual manner and this adds to the romantic but also comedy elements to this type of film. Also if the film was acted out by thirty-odd divorced women with children trying to find love again it wouldn’t have the same young feel to the film.
Jam tarts used as a sexual item
What kind of media institution might distribute our film and why? Film 4 would probably distribute our film because it distributes low budget British films. Our film would fit into this category because it is a low budget, go with the flow film. It has British actors in it and therefore correctly slots into this institution perfectly. Film 4 has brought rom-coms such a ‘four weddings and a funeral’ into the limelight. Another way of distributing our film could be to use the internet as many young people know how to access films in that way. Also there are things run by the BBC that help to develop young talented film makers. In this way many new films are able to be distributed for viewers to see.
Who would be the audience for your media products? The audience of this film would suit girls/women around the ages of 13-25. This is because romantic comedies usually have some sort of connection with many women's lives. The writers of romantic comedies are good at being able to understand what women want out of a relationship but also the complications that arise within relationships. Around the age of 13 is when girls start to have relationship and they enjoy to watch romantic comedies as they want to envisage themselves growing up and having a relationship like the main characters of the film have in the beginning. Around the age of 25 is when women start to settle down and have a family. Although rom-coms still appeal to them they don’t have as much time to spend watch films so the amount of people that age watching rom-coms declines.
How did we attract/address our audience? We attracted our audience by having up beat music with the two main characters missing each other all the time. This keeps the audience in suspense on when they were going to eventually meet. Our audience is addressed with the way our clothes relate to the modern surroundings and also the age of the protagonists. This addresses the audience in such a way that they feel engaged and as if they want to relate to the film. Also the blossoming relationship attracts the audience because they feel as if it could happen to them with the people in their lives that they like.
What have we learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? We have learnt about the Mac computers which are involved in the editing process. We now understand how to add effects to the film sections and how to effectively cut shots in the right places to make the film look at it’s best quality. Using I movie was also easier because we understood how all the controls worked, making transitions easier to do. Also we have learnt how to make shots better by using different angles. The control over the camera was a lot better as we were more use to using the camera and able to use the functions on it better. E.g. the zoom.
Looking back at our preliminary task, what have we learnt in the progression from it to the full product? The music in our main task is a lot better than in our preliminary task. This is because we have learnt how to cut the music down so that it fits in with the scenes better. Also the transitions between shots flowed better than in our preliminary tasks because we understood how that Macs worked whereas in our preliminary task we were getting use to using them. We had also experimented in our preliminary task so we were able to do some more advanced shots making our main task more professional.
