Kerrang! is a UK-based magazine devoted to rock music. It was initially focused on heavy metal genres but expanded its coverage in the 2000s. While sales declined after the nu-metal trend ended, adopting emo and metalcore helped boost readership. Kerrang! primarily targets 16-24 year old males and appeals to them through imagery of iconic male bands. It maintains a devoted audience through diverse online content that keeps readers engaged between issues.
This document evaluates Morgan Clough's media product portfolio. It discusses how the portfolio followed conventions of real music magazines in its house style, masthead design, and balance of images and text. The portfolio targeted teenagers and young adults who enjoy music and concerts. A mainstream magazine publisher like Heat or Kerrang would be suitable to distribute the product. The evaluation also reflects on technologies learned through creating the portfolio.
The document discusses the key elements expected on the front cover of a music magazine. It begins with the masthead at the top center stating the company name to identify the publisher. The main image features a well-known music artist relevant to the genre to attract the target audience. Cover lines below provide clear information about the magazine's content and anchor the image. Other standard elements include a barcode and date at the bottom for pricing and a footer that mirrors the header.
The document evaluates how the author's music magazine prototype uses, develops, and challenges conventions of real music magazines.
The masthead, cover images, and color scheme generally follow conventions but the masthead font and central cover lines introduce some challenges. Inside, the contents page connects to the cover visually while using an unconventional dark background color. Photographs and articles follow conventions through layout and sequencing but also introduce some innovative elements. Overall, the evaluation shows an attempt to balance familiar magazine conventions with new design risks.
The document provides feedback on Rebecca Paterson's magazine evaluation project. It discusses design choices made for the magazine's color scheme, layout, images, and conventions used. Key points include using consistent red, turquoise, black and white colors throughout; keeping the contents page background white with smaller blocks of color; and using images of artists and instruments to follow magazine trends. Conventions from other magazines like NME were also utilized, such as sections to split articles and an editor's letter. Layout choices for the double page spread and masthead were made based on codes from other similar genre magazines.
The document provides an evaluation of a student's media product which is a magazine. The student discusses how they used and challenged conventions of real magazines in their product. They incorporated typical magazine elements like a masthead and cover lines but challenged conventions by using a minimalist design and free poster. The student was influenced by magazines like Q, Spin and NME but developed their own ideas. They aimed their magazine at teenagers interested in indie rock and represented their target audience through the images selected. The student concludes they learned about using programs like Publisher, Page Plus and Paint.net to construct their magazine product.
The document analyzes the layout and design features of the contents page from the September 2009 issue of NME magazine. Key points analyzed include the use of the masthead and bold text at the top with the date and issue number to identify the publication. The contents are organized into color-coded sections to easily guide readers to articles about specific bands. A central image and introductory text from the editor are used to summarize the issue's content. Information on subscribing and previous/future issues aims to encourage ongoing readership. Overall, the detailed analysis examines how visual and structural elements are employed to effectively present information to readers.
This document analyzes magazine front covers, contents pages, and articles from the September 2009 issue of NME magazine. Key points analyzed include the use of images, headlines, fonts, and colors to target a young, music-obsessed audience. Specifically, the front cover features rapper Dizzee Rascal to appeal to fans of that genre. The contents page lists band news in an accessible way and uses an informal tone from the editor. The double-page article analyzes Dizzee Rascal's career path from street artist to worldwide fame through its headline and background images.
The document describes the design choices made for a magazine called "Megaphone" targeted at 11-18 year olds interested in pop-punk music. It was influenced by the design of existing magazines like Rocksound and Vibe. Key design elements copied included the contents page layout, use of purple as a theme color, and mix of greyscale and color photos. The target audience was identified through an online quiz as teenagers interested in live concerts and discovering new bands. The magazine would be distributed in print and online to reach this audience.
My media product is a music magazine that represents the metal and hardcore music scene. It uses conventions from other music magazines, such as a sidebar with features, but also challenges conventions by having the title in the center of the cover rather than the side. The target audience is males and females aged 15-20 who enjoy music events. It would be produced by a large publisher like Bauer Media Group and aims to attract its target audience through the relevant cover star and competitive monthly price of £2.40.
1. 1. In what ways does your media product use
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
For a music magazine a typical generic feature used constantly is the Masthead, this is
the title of the magazine. In this case my Music Magazine is called ‘Raver’ and is placed
right at the top of the cover and in the centre. This is a generic convention which I have
chosen to do as I wanted to keep it the same as most magazines also because it makes
it stand out and eye-catching. The other conventions I used on the cover of the
magazine is the barcode and the sub-titles. However I added another convention which
is different and not all magazines have on the cover, I added the Twitter, Facebook and
Instagram logo to it. This is a good convention as most of my readers will mostly use
these social networks and it is a good advertising tool for the magazine.
I used a medium close up picture for the cover as most magazines use this type of
shot, I also added an effect to develop the convention to give a “futuristic” and
“electronic” look to it as my magazine is a House Music Magazine.
Overall the Front Cover follows most generic conventions but some have been
developed and some completely new. The cover looks futuristic and electronic which
relates to the genre of my magazine “House Music”.

4. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
My double page spread is very colourful and vibrant, I As a young adult myself and an electronic music fan,
did this as my target audience is aimed at young all the electronic magazines I have read all used light
adults and so I wanted the double page spread to colours as it looked very young and futuristic and
look young and fresh. I laid out the spread in ways electronic and so to achieve this look I used the

so I split the text into 3 columns so that the reader
will be able to read the text easier.

Q2. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
As my media product is for the genre of house music the sort of social groups that will be represented is electronic
fans and “Ravers”. A raver can be anyone who attends an all night party (could be underground and small or "bust-
free" and a massive) consisting of DJs who play electronic dance music (for example: trance, HOUSE, happy hardcore,
drum & bass, etc.) frequently. They are identifiable by their brightly coloured clothing and because of this I decided to
make the magazine bright and colourful, which I did. I also named the magazine “RAVER” as it suited the theme of the
magazine.
EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE OF
As my media product is for
SOCIAL GROUPS THAT MY
MEDIA PRODUCTS electronic/house music, the social
REPRESENT groups are mostly young but it can also
represent the older generation when
electronic music hit the scene, but my
media product can exclue some groups
such as the mainstream groups and the
very young such as ages between 9-14
as the magazine features clubs and raves
which are only for over 17 and so feel
alienated.
7. MY HOUSE MUSIC MAGAZINE REPRESENTS PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS SUCH AS THE RAVERS
The colours used such as the blue, pink, yellow, green etc are the colours in which most ravers like to dress up in. The ''Hottest
Raves Of The Year'' subtitle on the cover page shows that this type of magazine is for people who like going to raves. The other
social group that my magazine could represent is the electronica fans which are interested in making their own music and so I
added instruments in my magazine such as the keyboard.
Overall to target these social groups I used the presentation of the magazine to make the relate to it and showcased features
such as “the hottest raves” and “top 10 gigs” to attract these social groups.
8. Q3. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRUBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
I’ve decided to publish my magazine for music magsbecause I think that this
institution has a space that can be filled by my magazine, mainly because of it’s
genre. Most of the magazines are guitar based and because it has experience selling
music magazines, I think they would be good selling my magazine. My magazine is
part of the house music genre which I think could be filled with my magazine since
this institution sells no house music magazine. As a result this can fill a hole and
make profit for the business
I would sell my magazine in corner shops because these are the most popular ways
that magazine are brought (apart from online subscriptions which I would include)
because house is one the most popular genres around at the moment.
9. Q4. WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?
The audience for my House Music Magazine would be young adults who are electronic fans, so people
who listen to DJs and who play electronic dance music like; trance, HOUSE, happy hardcore, drum &
bass etc. These are the audiences I am targeting as this generation is growing up in the technology era
where music is now all made electronically and so what better to base my magazine on.
This audience would be attracted to my media product as it features DJs, raves, gigs, colours, and a
futuristic feel. A typical reader of my music magazine would be like the girl in my reader profile
research:
RAVER READER
Abbey Lee 19 lives in London. She is a passionate electronic music fan; her favourite genre of electronic music is House Music. She is a first year
student in university; her scene is nightclubs and raves. She attends all her favourite DJs gigs/concerts. Her favourite artists/djs are Deadmau5, Benny
Benassi, Dafts Punk and LaLa. Abbey Lee loves reading magazines such as RAVER. Abbey Lee has a collection of RAVER magazines, however mainly
buying them only for the posters and the free CD tracks they offer every two months. Abbey Lee and her boyfriend attend local DJ gigs and often help
out at the local music store on the weekends. Her circle of friends all enjoy House Music and also most of the rest of the students at her University
listen to it too. Abbey Lee's view on House Music is that it is a growing genre where there are more younger fans. Abbey Lee also likes to dress like the
female DJs and fellow ravers displayed in RAVER magazine and gets her style inspiration from RAVER as there is a style section in the magazine. Abbey
Lee is seen as the leading light and the one everyone in her peer group look up to and often sets the fashion and music taste of the group, the music
she has on her iPod is well applauded and and respected amongst her group.
This is the type of audiences I would have as for example Abbey Lee likes electronic music and she
attends nightclubs and raved and her favourite artists include DJs Daft Punk which are house music DJs.
10. Q5. HOW DID YOU ATTRACT YOUR AUDIENCE?
To attract my audience I used titles on the cover of my magazine mentioning words such as RAVES,
GIGS, INTERVIEWS, HOUSE etc, these are words which will attract my particular target audience. I also
used vibrant colours which I have mentioned before because as been told by fellow peers “the look of
the magazine is what attracts a reader in buying it”, so by using colours which are colourful and
playful, I was able to also attract certain social groups, the RAVER social group. I also stated on the
cover of the magazine “free posters to be given away” because from my primary research I asked the
panel if it was a good idea to give out a free CD or track with the magazine, they all agreed but I
decided to change a free CD into a free POSTER as on the Raver reader profile Abbey Lee likes to but
magazines “mainly buying them only for the posters”.
Out of the 6 fonts I tested on in my title block
analysis, I felt I made the right decision is choosing
the one I used, as it has a techno feel to it, it suits an
electronic music magazine and also it is bold, clear
and eye-catching. This is what I also feel like that it
attracts my audience as it is one of the first things a
reader would see and because the masthead looks
so electronic the reader will pick up the magazine
and read it.
11. Q6. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS
OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?
For this media product which is a Music Magazine the main piece of software I used was Adobe
Photoshop CS5, which is something I had very limited knowledge in how to use it. But I managed to
adjust well and learn new skills in how to make my product look like a professional Music Magazine.
This technology was quite tricky to use at first but once I learnt the basics such as adjusting the
dimensions of an image, changing the colour of text and backgrounds and adding new fonts that had
been taken off other sites (such as Dafont) and adding shapes I was then able to develop my
knowledge further by adding effects and cropping my pictures using the wizard tool etc.
I also learnt many new tricks on Photoshop such as
the “adjustments” feature where I could change the
contrast/tone of my image which I did do, and also
the Hue & Saturation.
There were many problems that did occur in
creating this product, for example some of my
TOOLS ON PHOTOSHOP
pictures were quite dull and the lighting was not WHICH I USED
that good and to improve them I used the Hue and
Saturation Adjustment to change the colours of the
images which helped in creating the colourful
double page spread and I think it does look very
good and suits the theme of the magazine.
12. Q7. LOOKING BACK AT THE PRELIMINARY TASK WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT I
N THE PROGRESSIOM FROM IT TO A FULL PRODUCT?
Preliminary task
In the preliminary task I did not make many creative or micro decisions were needed. I
just took a quick snapshot and did not think about how I was going to take it and what
kind of shot I wanted, and for the editing part of the task I used the same font throughout
which made the cover rather dull.
However I do think that I did the task to a fairly good standard but could be improved by
re-arranging the text and make it more creative and less dull
In regards to props I made sure I used students who were well dressed to give a sense
that the school’s students have high standards, this was the only consideration I took in
creating this cover.
Main Task
For the main task, I wanted my media product to be very creative and so I did some
Costume and Props planning to help me to decide what type of pictures I wanted to
take, also the design drafting helped me a lot as I based my product on these drafts, they
gave me a step forward in creating a product I wanted to achieve. I made some creative
decisions such as adding effects to the final images because I wanted to portray the
techno coloured side of electronic music which resulted in a good outcome.
My time management could have been improved, I spent too much time in preparing
myself in taking the pictures and when it came to editing them I had very little amount of
time in order to complete the final product and so I feel that I could improve my product
much further. However some of the pictures turned out well, I managed to use around
over 9 different types of photos; photos of the cover star, other artists and even a RAVE, so
I feel that my pre-production went well.
13. HOW SUCCESSFUL YOUR PRODUCT IS WITH YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE USING AUDIENCE FEEDBACK.

14. Looking at my final products I can see that there is still lots of room for improvement that can be made, for example I could improve
the contents page and make it less structured and more creative. Also I could have added a few more texts on the front cover as it lacks
any bold headings, also I could have used more shapes on the cover to make it more eye-catching. However I do feel that I did
complete my media product and I am pleased with the outcome, it is colourful, authentic, original, structured well and I have used a
good range of photos and made many adjustments to make them stand out.
