Elishia produced a narrative music video for a class project. She worked with a group to film scenes depicting a story where a husband attacks his wife. Elishia played the wife. In editing the video, Elishia added effects like slow motion and pictures synced to the beat of the song. She received positive feedback from her teacher and peers for the camera work, editing, narrative, and syncing to the music. However, Elishia also identified areas for improvement, such as incorporating more camera shots and transitions between clips.

During the production of making the music video there were many strengths and weaknesses I
found along the way. My strengths of this would include; preparing for the actual filming, knowing
how to use each program, imputing ideas to help make the overall outcome better and getting on
with the project efficiently with the team I was with.
If I were to do thisagain, I woulduse the camera more often; however I did get many more chances
to use it this time comparedto the other units. I wouldalso become more creative when editing,by
taking a moment to see if YouTube could have help me, rather than having to ask the teacher. My
actingtechniquescould have also improvedin certain places as I felt it didn’t look realistic enough.
The original ideawas tohave a longfightbetweenmyselfand Jordan; however this turned out to be
shorterthan expectedasitadaptedintomore of a chase; whichI personally thought worked better,
helping to keep the audience engagedas well as giving them more to focus on.
The audience is expecting a music video, either a narrative, performance, conceptual or art music
video. I think I have produced an effective narrative video as you see a story throughout it. Within
this music video the characters involved would be: A husband; who was Jordan Wardle, his wife;
played by myself, two policemenwho arrested Jordan, and many ‘thoughtsin Jordan’s head’.
We see in the musicvideothat the husbandis beingattackedbyhis wife however there is a twisted
endingas he killshis wife and suffers indefinitely. We then see many thoughts of Jordan’s through
many differentvideoeffects.I feltthe song chosen was very
effective asthere were many beats and drum hits which
clipscouldbe addedon. For example Iused the 4 beats near
the beginning of the song to place 3 pictures on each beat,
to hopefully give the audience extra detail, as well as
foreshadowing the ending. This picture I used for this is
when I am lying on the floor, indicating I am dead. I also
lowered the capacity to make it not too clear to the
audience that they would instantly understand the ending/
outcome. We used a high angle shot to show how weak
/defenseless the wife is.
During the process of filming we used many camera angles and
shots. Long shots were perfect for when setting the scene or when
Jordan and I were walking side by side. Close ups were used when
the focuswasdirected onone aspect, forexamplemyhands trying to
open the door.However next time I would try to input more of a
varietyof camera shotsas most of them appearedto be longshots or
close ups.
The finished Musicvideoseemsgoodbutisn’tperfect,soif Iwere tomake thisagainI wouldchange
the clipfrom Jordan and I fightingtothe view of ourfeetas I didn’tedititaccurately. If I were tocut
out the 1 more secondmy continuitywouldbe smoother. Iwouldalsomake more of the clip’s
transitionsto the beat, to emphasize the songand give a better impressionforthe viewerwhen
they’re listening. Howeveritdoesstill lookappealingandinterestingassome viewershave stated.

As well asmyself inmy group there was also Jordan Wardle, Matt
Lumley and Stanley Guilford. The group’s idea was to make a
narrative music video. Matt came up with the track, then we got
most of our inspiration from the official video and
imagination/filmswatched in the past. We started by filming the
fightscene usingmany differentcameraangles, tomake it interesting; every new aspect was a new
camera angle. Our target audience were anyone who enjoys the original song and music video, so
our expectations were high.In the video I included many special effects such as black and white,
ghosting,slow motion,transitions,etc. Ghosting was used for when I was dead, but re -living
how I died, I was looking in the mirror at the scares from Jordan. It made me look dead as
the colour was drained from me; I also had to place two clips on top of each other and one
colour and one black and white. I changed the capacity of one to make the black and white
show through, to also help emphasize I was dead. We also used props and costumes to help
the videocome to life; for example we used a white cardboard box to representa breezeblockas it
wouldn’thave beensafe if we were touse a real one, I hadto make sure I wore the same outfit each
week in order to record the video accurately (continuity).
The water bottle gave an extra touch to show that I was serious, withouthaving to hurt the actors
involved adding to the mise-en-scene. Thanks to my group we managed to get the camera angles
and shots to create an effective music video, I felt more comfortable putting my input into this
section as they would all listen to my ideas. Occasionally they weren’t
used which was fine, and other times we could use them with other
ideas to enhance it. However if I were to do this again I would have got
one more long shot of Jordan looking out the window, his back to the
camera to go with my ‘thoughtsin his head’ section.
I am very pleased withthe songchoice because it wasn’t a song that was over-played, after hearing
it a few times I felt that the beat was helpful; adding clips, transitioningclips etc.
Apart from that I am happy with the outcome. At first we assigned roles to everyone and stuck to
themwell, everyone gotachance to filmandshow off theirskillsas well as being able to input their
ideas easily and efficiently.I think that because we filmed many clips (accurate/rubbish) and didn’t
delete any, it gave more of a variety when editing our videos, which can make it more interesting
for the audience if they watch more than one persons in their group.
Although we worked well as a group getting the ideas down, getting certain shots, when editing it
was all my ideas, I knew what I wanted and felt like I either got it or made it better. However like I
have suggested above there are improvements I could have completed. The creativity came from
musicvideos/filmsI had seenon TV and watched in lessons. I knew how to use the program which
was more helpful this time round. I downloaded the song off YouTube and used YouTube
converter to convert it into a MP3 so I could put it onto my music video. I also edited clips so that I
didn’t have the whole of it, but little snippets.
