The document discusses how the media product, a music video, uses and develops conventions of real music videos. It conforms to conventions such as having a relationship between lyrics/music and visuals, using close-ups of the artist, and demonstrating genre characteristics. It was inspired by and uses clips from Bruno Mars' "Grenade" video. It challenges the convention of including voyeuristic female imagery as the song does not involve women. The document also discusses how a magazine ad and digipak for the album follow conventions by maintaining theme/color consistency and including the artist, song titles, and purchase details.

In what ways does your media product use
1. In what ways does your
media product use,
develop or challenge
forms of real media
products?
2. Our music video consists of elements of Andrew Goodwins’ conventions
such as:
• There’s a relationship between lyrics and visuals
• There’s a relationship between music and visuals
• There’s often inter-textual references to things such as TV programmes
and other music videos
• The demand of a record label will include the need for lots of close ups
of the artist and the artist may develop motifs that recur across the
work
• Music videos demonstrates genre characteristics
• One convention we have challenged is there is frequently reference to
notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female
body. In our music video we haven’t included any females as the song
doesn’t involve women.
3. How we have conformed?
We have used the inspiration from Bruno
Mars's music video "Grenade" in order to film
our own music video. We have taken clips
from his music video and made our own
version in our music video. We have mainly
used a lot of lip syncing in our music video
with a fair amount of close up shot so that
the audience can get a clear view of the artist
lip syncing just as Bruno Mars is doing. We
have conformed to Goodwin's convention
with the close up as we wanted the audience
to get a feel of the artists emotions just like
Bruno Mars, and the lip syncing to be clear
and portray the correct images.
4. We have then gone further to conform to
Goodwin's conventions the genre of the music
which is depression, sadness, loneliness and
possibly confused. This is shown through the
expression of the artist. The beat of the song
as well as the words, the same principle is
shown in Bruno Mars' music video pointed
out his sadness through the beat of the song
as well as his expressions. The theme of
depression is very obvious n both video hence
the objects both artists are carrying behind
them. But we have also conformed to
Goodwin’s convention of demonstrating genre
characteristics (depression, sadness) and
also relating the visuals and lyrics.
5. We have conformed by showing the scenes of a man
struggling to carry the object behind him. This is also followed
through in our music video which emphasises the struggle
both artists are having in the life. The object is weighting
them down leaving them depressed and sad. This is a good
scene to shot as it’s an experience everyone has had and
although when you have a lot of things on your mind, it’s not
visual this is significant as both music video are using heavy
objects to reinforce the heaviness of what’s on their minds.
6. How we have challenged?
We have challenged Goodwin’s convention which is the
convention that there is frequently reference to notion of
looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female
body. In our music video we haven’t included any females as
the song doesn’t involve women. Both music video are
talking about struggles in which they both face. Bruno Mars
is talking about struggles in a relationship whereas our group
is talking about daily struggles such as work getting onto of
them. Even though Bruno Mars is talking about a female in
the song we don’t actually see him with a female yet
another man is with the female in the music video.
7. When making our magazine
advert we included quotes from
newspapers which made the
magazine advert more appalling
to the audience. This also
encourages the audience to buy
the album as it’s been rated by
newspapers.
There’s also the release date
so that the audience know
when it’s available to buy the
album and there’s an element
of the digipak in the advert as
we have added a picture of
the digipak on the advert.
8. The name of the artist and
album is in a very clear font and
right in the middle of the
magazine advert so you won’t
miss it. It’s also suitable for any
audience as the font is a suitable
size. It reflects the same kind of
image as the digipak as we have
used the same colour and font
therefore the making of them
both. This is great for the
audience as they will know from
the advert what the album is
expected to look like and also it
makes it representable and
classy to read. We have also
added logos at the bottom of
the advert so people are aware
where they can purchase the
album from.
9. Here we have a screen
grab of the front cover
of the digipak which
shows the artist’s face
which has been used
throughout the
magazine advert and
digipak, the colour
scheme has stayed
constant. The artist’s
name is also clearly
presented and the
album name is also
there.
10. We’ve included the
track list of the album
at the back of the
digipak, and details of
the record label. This is
so that the audience is
aware of what songs
are on the album
before actually
purchasing it. There’s
also a bar cord at the
back so that we know
where it’s to be
scanned. The theme
hasn’t changed and also
the artist’s body is still
the main focus of our
digipak and magazine
advert.
11. This is one of the shots
inside the digipak which is a
picture of a guitar as it’s
obvious throughout the song
that there’s someone in the
background playing a guitar.
This is significant as it still
stays within the theme of
what the song is about still
using elements of the music
video to make the digipak.
12. The last three images of the digipak
show images which the artist
pasted in the music video. So here
you can see how we brought the
music video in together with the
digipak. This makes the digipak look
classy and it has a neat structure
and doesn’t go off the theme. This
also ties in with the genre as the
image of the field could emphasis
peace after the depression the
artist has gone through. The brick
wall could suggest the isolation of
the artist as no one can help him
through this depression.
