General Principles of Intellectual Property: Concepts of Intellectual Proper...
Question 1
1. Question 1:
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
2. Mis-en-scene
The opening scene is in all red. I chose to have
this particular lighting because red connotes
emotions of anger, danger and love. In this
sense it highlights the danger of this particular
character. The actor is obviously is tied up to
show he cannot escape, it was also a conscious
decision to make him appear scruffy. For
example his shirt is deliberately unbuttoned
and his blazer is roughed up, furthermore I
added water on his face to resemble sweat,
showing his fear and anxiety. The mis-en-scene
is extremely important in telling the narrative
with or without dialogue, by sticking to the
convention of dark lighting and dark clothing
the audience can infer that the actor is in a bad
situation and is likely to be in danger
3. Editing
Another convention I stuck to was the use of angles to
portray a characters status. Here, you can see the
shot is placed at a high angle which can make the
character look weak and confused. This is commonly
done in thriller films for that intended purpose for
example in The Shining, Danny is often seen at a very
high angle making him seem vulnerable and more
childlike. Therefore I too placed my actor at a very
high angle so he looks hopeless and more susceptible
to danger which creates more tension in the
audience.
4. Fast edit cuts
A series of different cuts were done in this scene,
paired with fast tempo music to build up high levels of
anticipation in the audience. I developed the original
convention of one single shot following a characters
movement to series of multiple shots from different
angles. I believe by doing this you are able to immerse
the audience more into the action which increases the
tension and suspense.
