3. COSTUME SETTING
Costume plays a huge part in the mise-en-
scene as it indicates the characters
personality and job and we can
immediately figure out what kind of person
he is. It aswell tells us what generation we
are in. EXAMPLE: Batman wouldn't be
Batman without his costume, neither
would Superman.
Setting is very important in the mise-en-
scene as its where the action takes place
and can be used to reveal the genre of the
movie. Setting can also help the audience
identify what kind of person the
character is.
EXAMPLE: the setting is in Manhattan
with a girl shopping you can immediately
tell this girl is rich. It creates meaning and
can create enigma.

4. PROPS LIGHTING
Props are what creates meaning in a
movie. Props are items or objects seen in
the scene such as guns, glasses, hats etc.
It could be part of the uniform/costume
of the character, such as a police always
carries a gun. Props could also link to
what kind of character he is, provides
knowledge to the audience.

Lighting is used to create mood and
atmosphere. Different kind of lighting
and color is used to create different
types of effects and meaning.
Low key lighting such as shadows are
used in dark scenes such as in horror
movies. High key lighting is more
realistic lighting in the sun used to
create realism.

5. MAKEUP
Makeup as well tells the audience what kind of
roll the character is playing and about its
personality. It tells us what society the film is
based around and the characters feelings. When
you look at how a character makeup is done you
can immediately point their role in the movie.
EXAMPLE: If a woman has very bad dark circles
and dry lips you could tell shes sick and very tired
, she can be in trouble.

6. WHY IS IT
IMPORTANT?
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT WHEN
CREATING A MEDIA TEXT
AND WHAT IMPACT CAN IT
HAVE ON AN AUDIENCE?
Mise-en-scene is important because it gives the
audience a better understanding of what is
happening in the movie as well creates realism.
Mise-en-scene is the props, movement, lighting,
costumes, and actors in a movie.
EXAMPLE: There's a dentist scene in a movie,
for the audience to recognize this is a dentist we
need a variety of things, such as a dentist
wearing a white robe, equipment, dentist chair
and equipment/tools. This is how we portray a
dentist image to the audience.
If, for example, we didn't have these elements
the scene wouldn't look realistic and
professional.
It impacts the audience as it makes them want to
continue watching the movie.
