The two of them are supposed to hang out, but it’s getting late/dark out and she
hasn’t shown up yet. He’s getting anxious that the reason she hasn’t shown up
yet is because she thinks he’s annoying or stupid and doesn’t want him around.
Think – young, insecure teenager with unrequited teenage love.
He’s excited to spend the night with the girl – the sort of giddy excitement that
comes with teenage crushes/love, perhaps because the night is commonly a
romantic time. Also, night could represent his fears towards a relationship, but
the thrill of the chase.
There’s an innocence to the song that suggests a relationship during younger
years – the song is devoid of some of the usual frank references to sex. Perhaps
this is a first crush during pubescent years, when girls normally hit their growth
spurts sooner than boys, so the object of his affection may in fact be taller than
him. It’s also said that girls mentally mature sooner than boys, so maybe she sees
it for the crush that it is while he wants more out of it, and she’s suggesting he
wait and not rush into things and rather than just fool around.
There is an inherent cautiousness and fragility when it comes to the relationship.
He’s unsure where things stand and what it could be, so in the mean time they
simply test the waters to see if perhaps she is the one for him.

Matty the singer is desperate for her
to truly notice how much he needs
her. He feels as if his feelings are
invisible to her. Matty knows that this
girl doesn’t really need him, but
regardless he is still in love with her.
The girl quite possibly rejected Matty
previously and now he is hoping that
she would rethink what she had once
said so that they can be something
more.

He could quite literally have gotten caught on her coat, which
emphasizes his nervousness and clumsiness in the presence of this girl.
It’s all very innocent and timid.
It Could also be a reference to ‘to hang on coattails’ – he doesn’t think
very highly of himself and is clinging on to her metaphorically as
someone of importance.
Being in close proximity, Matty takes the girl’s approval as a sign that she
wouldn’t mind more physical contact. It’s playful, like when you and the
person you like are “accidentally” yet casually brushing your hands as
you walk together.
Matty is willing to slowly progress the relationship if it means they will
be together. He can wait as long as necessary till she gives him a chance
and lets him into her heart. He is very determined and strongly believes
that he’ll succeed and win her love.
Matty likes the way she’s alive and the life of the party. He asks her to sit
down with him so he can get to know her better.
The use of the word “maybe?” indicates his hesitation and nerves due to
the uncertainty he feels with regards to their relationship.
He feels that the girl is all he needs to be happy. There is a progression
from previously wondering whether she’s all he needs to the realization
that she is. He admits his feelings for her.
