Evaluation 7 – Looking back at your
preliminary task, what do you feel you
have learnt in the progression from it to
the full product?
Filming and editing:
After we had finished our preliminary task, we had gained new
knowledge about the equipment and software needed to
produce the opening sequence, for example when filming we
learnt and studied the different camera shots and techniques
used such as action match, pan, 180 degree rule, close ups,
extreme close ups etc. This helped us a lot to understand the
different types that we wanted to include in our opening
sequence and helped develop our skills even more when
applying it to our opening sequence once we had shot our clips,
we went straight to editing them where we learnt a great deal
about the software final cut express which we had spoke about
in evaluation ,so by learning many of these features already by
testing them on the prelim, we were able to edit our opening
sequence in a much more professional way which really
enhanced our skills as we got faster at certain things.
Sound:
After creating our preliminary task, sound
proved to be the main issue when editing
as we seemed to get places where there
were unnecessary speaking and sound,
eventually we learnt how to get rid of the
sound by selecting the sound bar and
deleting it. However we did add our own
sound over the sequence, we did this by
downloading the sound on YouTube and
converting it to mp3 and then dragged in
onto the bar underneath our opening
sequence.
Directing and Writing:
For our preliminary task we all came up
with ideas and wrote them down
individually however after finishing our
prelim editing we realised that writing the
script of the opening sequence will help
us improve a lot more as when you are
producing you need to work together. As
directing goes, we all had a part in
directing our prelim, However after the
prelim we understood that not all of us
can do the same things as there are other
jobs to be doing which is why we learnt
from this and assigned each other on
what they are doing for the
actual opening sequence.
Planning:
Then conducting our preliminary task we
found that planning did not go as well as
we thought due to not enough
communication from some, similarly we
had the same issues when creating our
opening sequence, however we
understood this issue and resolved it
quickly so that we could create a
successful opening sequence.
Storyboard and scripting:
Creating a storyboard and scripting
our opening sequence proved much more
successful than our prelim as we all sat
down for a couple of hours and properly
discussed the storyline for our opening
sequence which we could then create in
to a storyboard and script it, however in
the prelim as I’ve said before we had
issues with communication but we
managed to overcome that to finish
our opening sequence.
Weaknesses of our preliminary
task:
• Not so much knowledge of camera
shot/angles/movement.
• Lack of editing skills to make our
preliminary task better.
• Continuity errors.
• Unnecessary speaking.
• Lack of communication.
Assurance of no weaknesses in our final piece:
We have ensured that these weaknesses are not in our final
piece as firstly we learnt a lot more about camera shots,
angles and movement after completing our prelim and we
worked on them in practice clips.
secondly, from learning how to edit between the time we
finished the prelim and editing the opening sequence we had
learnt a great deal about how to edit effectively.
Thirdly, there would be no continuity errors and unnecessary
speaking as we shot our clips carefully and edited anything
wrong in the clips out.
Lastly, We know that we have improved communication as we
worked together through the last weeks and made sure each
of us are doing well in editing and sorting everything out.
How to make a good practical piece:
To make a good practical piece I believe that a lot of
hard work is required along with patience so that
you can get the end product that you want and also
to keep practicing and learning new techniques that
can enhance your product every day.
Overall:
Overall, I think that I have learned a lot more about the practical
work than I ever thought I would and I have learnt how to use
many different types of software and technologies such as final
cut pro.
I learnt how to add sound, log and transfer, import, saturate
colors, add titles to clips, cut in and out of clips etc. which I can
now use for other things in the future.
Another software was live type, this taught me how to create
professional titles by choosing a font and color and adding it to
my clips.
I also believe that due to working on the preliminary task before
the final piece, I could understand many more techniques
meaning I can successfully apply them to my final product and
so that I don't make mistakes and create a decent overall end
product.
