HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR
AUDIENCE?
EVALUATION 5
Our first influence was Unfriended. We chose this as an influence because it focuses on
social media and the dangers of strangers online. We decided to take ideas from the Skype
scene where an ‘unknown’ video call pops up on the screen, we changed it so Sam Parker’s
follow request pops up on the screen when Olivia is sitting on her bed, this adds a sinister
effect to the scene because she’s innocently sitting on her bed scrolling through Twitter,
then suddenly the follow request pops up. During this scene the music is building,
therefore this creates tension for the audience. This is similar to the scene in Unfriended,
however in Unfriended diegetic dialogue is used on top of the tension building non -
diegetic soundtrack.
INFLUENCES - UNFRIENDED
Our second influence was the anonymous mask. We chose this so we could hide Sam Parker’s
identity and his face was never to been seen in the opening of our thriller. However we didn’t
end up using the mask because it’s overused in many other thrillers, therefore we chose not to
use it. Although we still kept his identity on the down low, to do this Sam kept his hood up and
his head down for the entire opening, this helped keep his identity hidden, also so Olivia
didn't notice him in the cafe or in the woods.
INFLUENCES - ANONYMOUS MASK
Our third influence is an innocent girl in the woods. We chose this as an influence because a
woods sets sinister connotations for the audience, therefore we used the woods as a location
to match thriller conventions and also to build tension for the audience. In the image the girl is
wearing a pink dress, this shows conventions of an innocent, young girl. The woods have
sinister connotations, therefore this shows the audience she is entering a potential danger
zone where she could possibly get hurt. We used this to show Olivia when she is meeting the
online predator Sam Parker, this automatically gives Sam a villain character profile.
INFLUENCES - GIRL IN THE WOODS
The genre of our film is horror thriller. Due to our film being a horror thriller we can
target a wider audience, this is because different genres attract a different variety
of people.
The music we used for our thriller is calm yet it builds tension in the correct places
of the scenes. This makes the thriller jumpy for the audience, also the music
matches codes and conventions because it builds tension before jumpy shots, this
means it emphasises the audience’s feelings, this makes it feel more realistic for
the viewers.
We filmed in natural lighting for the first two scenes in Olivia’s bedroom and the
cafe, for the woods it was during the day but the weather was dull and cloudy, this
matches codes and conventions of a thriller because it shows a sinister effect to
the woods scene. The dull lighting sets the audience a feeling of tension building
and horror, this sets a sense of the unknown because the audience don’t know
what’s coming up next.
GENRE CONVENTIONS
Our Unique Selling Point is Olivia, the vulnerable girl, will save herself
from the online predator in a plot twist. This appeals to our audience
because in other films similar to ours the vulnerable character is
murdered or rescued by another person, therefore our thriller will attract
a large audience because it’s a different type of stalking film compared
to previous stalking films.
Also, we have used technology continuously in our thriller. We used an
iPhone and a MacBook, we done this to show communication between
Sam Parker, the online predator and Olivia Prentice, the innocent girl.
At the end of our opening we have left it on a cliff hanger, this means the
audience will want to continuing watching the film to find out what
happens to Olivia.
UNIQUE SELLING POINT
This is the title of our
thriller, it’s the only text
on the poster because
we wanted to draw
attention to the title,
we’ve done this so
people who have seen
this teaser poster,
they’ll look out for
‘Follow Request’.
ANALYSIS OF POSTERS - TEASER POSTER
We chose to use a
black and white filter,
we done this match
codes and
conventions of a
thriller. It also shows
the character in the
background as a
silhouette, this gives
the poster a dark and
ghostly look.
Olivia is the centre of
image, we done this
because we wanted
her to be the focus of
the poster. This also
shows she is the main
character in the film.
The title ‘Follow
Request’ is white
with a black
background, we
chose to do this
because it makes
the title stand out
on the poster.
ANALYSIS OF POSTERS - FINAL POSTER
The image on the poster
is the main focus of the
final poster. We decided
to keep it in colour
instead of black and
white because it shows
how young and
vulnerable Olivia is. In
this image Sam is
standing in background
with his hood up, this
creates the sense that
he doesn’t want his
identity to be seen. This
gives the poster a
sinister effect with the
sense of an unknown
person standing behind
a young, vulnerable girl.
Also we’ve included
a star rating for The
Daily Mail, this
shows the audience
responses were
positive.
The title ‘Follow
Request’ is white,
this makes it stands
out in front on the
image. It’s in a font
which it similar to a
typewriter font. The
title is the main
focus of the poster,
this is why it’s white
and bold.
ANALYSIS OF POSTERS - POST RELEASE POSTER
Sam Parker in the
background is
another focus of
the poster, this is
because the
image was
captured before
Olivia was
kidnapped. The
anger on his face
shows how
determined he is
to capture her.
For our online activities we used Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. We chose
these social media websites because many young people use these social
medias, therefore it was a good way to target our audience and promote our
film. We chose to use Twitter so we could tweet any updates to keep our viewers
installed with the latest news about our thriller.
ANALYSIS OF ONLINE WEBSITES
We use Instagram to post videos and images, again we chose Instagram
to promote our thriller film because many young people use Instagram,
therefore it was a good way to target our audience and promote our film.
ANALYSIS OF ONLINE WEBSITES
Lastly, we used YouTube to upload videos. This includes filming diaries,
interviews, rough cuts and presentations.
ANALYSIS OF ONLINE WEBSITES
Our teaser trailer matches the codes and conventions of a thriller because
we’ve used rapid editing, this editing technique builds tension and the shots
are short and quick, as the rapid editing has built tension this means the
audience will want to watch the film when it’s released.
The music in the trailer makes it more dramatic for the audience, it builds on
the feeling of sinister and mystery. Again this will make the viewer want to
watch the full film to find out what happens.
We’ve also included our company name and the title of the film, this means
when the public have watch the trailer they’ll be able to keep an eye out for a
release date. The background of the titles is black, this give the trailer a
sinister effect and matches the conventions well as it’s dark and mysterious.
We’ve shared our trailer on many social media sites, including YouTube,
Instagram and Twitter, this means that our followers on all social media
accounts will be able to watch our trailer. Also we will gain a larger audience
from doing this because many people use these social media sites.
