1. Evaluation Question 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?
2. Similarities & Differences Location can be seen and can be easily identifiable Mysterious location High key lighting Low key lighting Low key lighting to disguise his features Item of clothing used to disguise the features of the antagonist Hidden identity Both antagonists Dark hidden faces which shows a mysterious element Emotionless
3. Representation In our thriller opening we made a blonde girl to be the protagonist as many other thriller films such as Prom Night, use blond girls as they are stereotyped and can be typically known as innocent. By having a stereotype in our thriller opening challenges conventions to the genre and the audience may not expect this. In many other thriller films, the stalker is always a man as this is the stereotype judgement many people conclude. We choose on a man as our stalker as we thought it would be a simpler idea, whereas if we had a women stalker then this would challenge the thriller genre and the conventions. I have compared the stalker from our thriller opening to a stalker in a film called When A Stranger Calls, I have used this as they both have similarities and differences. Within many thrillers the stalker always has hidden identity as this is the most common stereotype. I think that all thriller films typically use a man as a stalker as using a women may be harder to plot a story but could also be challenging. When it came to research, and asking people whether they would like to see a female stalker, many people turned down this idea as many people would rather see a male stalker. Also it may be more easier to understand why we used a male stalker rather than a female stalker.
4. Sound Music is important when it comes to thrillers, as the music can give the genre but always gives that tense and eerie side. When it came to editing our thriller opening together, Kerry who was a member in our group had to create the music in which it went with the flow of our thriller opening. We had to consider the stalker and the protagonist. When the image was on the stalker we had to create the music so that it would sound eerie and tense as this is more interesting and engaging for the audience. When the protagonist came into image, we had to make the music suttle so that it would feel more tense.
5. Mise en scene This is important in thrillers because when establishing a shot you have to show some sort of scenery so that the audience can identify more with the film. Our thriller opening produces our stalker in a park, which may be challenging for the conventions of thrillers. This is because typically a thriller may open with a hidden face and mysterious sightings, but our thriller opening shows our stalker clear in the day time with high key lighting which challenges the idea of a thriller opening.
6. Editing and typography When it came it editing we had to cut scenes that didn’t go well together or if it gave too much of the story away. We wanted our thriller opening to be interesting so we had to cut scenes if they were to drag out and to bore our audience. When it came to our opening titles, the film Se7en inspired us as the narrative of the film Se7en was given away in the opening titles. This is because the titles look eerie and deranged, so this looks like good titles for a thriller opening as they may show the genre of the film.
