Production Process Evaluation
Research
Strengths of my research:
• The research I compiled regarding four existing products that I
wished to take inspiration from in regards to my docufilm
trailer/posters was very detailed, when it came to talking
about specific parts of three movies and one anime that I wished to
emulate in my game animation project. As well as this, I did
research on the trailers of two products (those being Super Smash
Bros. Ultimate and Inception), and on the posters of a movie (that
movie being Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2)
• I had easy access to places that I could find more information that
helped me in my research, like YouTube and several other sites that
gave me tips. Such tips included how to create certain effects that I
thought would make my docufilm poster look better and more
professional, and how to apply certain effects to video clips and
text, which all plays into how I try to appeal to my target audience
(that being fans of Monty Oum and his work).
• Experiments I did in my video editing software at home gave me practice in cutting certain video clips to
certain points in music (a common thing I did was cut clips to breaths that singers took in between the
lines of the song that they sung, as in "This will be the day we waited for *cut*, This will be the day we
open up the door *cut*, I don't want to hear your absolution *cut*, Hope you're ready for a
revolution *cut*", etc.
Planning 1
• One of the major strengths of my planning was the fact that I had more than one major
idea as to what I could do for a docufilm poster (and that I was able to carry out both
ideas to the best effect that I could).
• One idea that I had was a poster similar to the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. The poster
(pictured to the right) features a picture of Monty Oum that is halved down the middle,
on one side, and the main character of the most famous series that Monty worked on
(RWBY), a girl named Ruby Rose. The poster features a review from the movie site
Flixter (a fictional review), and a quote from Monty himself, the quote being 'there is no
futility, even in death'. The movie poster reveals the title of the movie itself
(Indomitable), and the release year of the movie (2020).
– The other of my two poster ideas was a poster inspired by the poster for
the movie 'The Next Three Days'. The poster includes a picture of Monty Oum
himself, and images of the four main characters of the web series RWBY: Ruby
Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long, which implies that all
of these things, these iconic characters, are inside Monty's head and waiting to
get out and be shown to the world. Similarly to the first one, this docufilm poster
also includes a quote from a fictional review from a fictional movie-reviewing
website (Animation Today). The poster shows the title of the movie (Indomitable),
and shows off the release year of the movie (2020)
• Another strength of my video game animation project was that the
schedule I had planned for what I was going to do throughout the entirety of the FMP
was a schedule that I stuck to very well. This was something that I aspired
to achieve during all of the other projects that I undertook this year, so this was an
improvement for myself over my previous projects.
Planning 2
• However, a weakness of my planning was that I could've put
more things into my mood board (which, with very little
exception, was focused on the things I was talking about in
my research, such as movies like Bohemian Rhapsody and
The Dark Knight, and things associated with Monty. If I were
to do this FMP again, I would most likely branch out a little
more to add more images into it.
Time Management
• My time management throughout the whole FMP, in my opinion, was pretty
good. I stuck to the schedule that I had set out for myself in the proposal for
this project for the entirety of said project (if I had to critique myself for
something, I would admit that I rushed the production of the second docufilm
poster, but this was due to circumstances beyond my control), and everything
went the way I hoped that it would, with only a few small issues with
Photoshop during production being what held me back.
• I was able to complete my project on time, and I'm very happy with how I did
throughout, from the PowerPoints explaining my vision for the docufilm that I
would be promoting, to the docufilm trailer and posters themselves.
• However, I believe that, if I had more time (and if certain things didn't happen
that caused me to rush the production of the second poster), I would be able
to fine-tune certain aspects of the second poster and make it as good as I
believe the first poster was. However, a personal target I had set myself was to
stick to the schedule I made for myself (something that I have had problems
with in the past), so I had to leave the second poster the way it was, and
submit that as the finished product.
Technical Qualities (Trailer)
• My docufilm trailer isn't the most technical thing ever produced, but
I'm still proud of it, and I believe that it's a good product for what I was
trying to convey.
• My trailer started with a recounting of the first time I found the 'Red
Trailer', the first piece of RWBY-related media ever released, on
YouTube, and being completely floored by how much I loved the
trailer, and how that managed to hook me on the show in an instant.
This is accompanied by a 'dramatic recreation' of the event, starring
me.
• The second part of the trailer brings up the creator of RWBY, Monty
Oum, who died of a severe allergic reaction in early 2015, and how the
docufilm is going to be about him, and in tribute to him. This includes
clips of Monty himself. All of these clips are in black and white,
which is commonplace to do when bringing up a dead person in a
documentary, even when there's available footage of the person in
question in colour.
• The final part of the docufilm trailer is comprised of more energetic
footage of Monty himself, as well as action-filled clips of the series' he
worked on, such as RWBY, Dead Fantasy and Haloid. This continues
until the end, where the title of the movie 'Indomitable' is shown,
along with a release year, that year being 2020.
Aesthetic Qualities (Posters)
• I think that the first poster that I made for my hypothetical
docufilm is one of the best things I've ever made in Photoshop. I
did everything I could to make it both reference Monty's work on
RWBY, his most famous project, look aesthetically pleasing, and
be simple all at the same time. In this, I believe I succeeded.
• I believe I did the second poster pretty well, but not as well as
the first. There were little things that, if you looked closer at the
poster, seem incredibly out of place and unprofessional
compared to the first poster (such as the transition from the
colour of Monty's hair to a transparent inside of his head on the
bottom of the poster. That's the one biggest glaring issue out of
the entirety of the second poster, but apart from that, I am as
proud of it as I am of the first poster.
Audience Appeal
• I did this entire FMP project for the purposes of marketing a
potential docufilm about Monty Oum, the creator of one of my
favourite fictional properties (RWBY) of all time, and one of the
most famous animated web series' that has ever come out. If I had
the funding or the time to go ahead and make this docufilm for
real, it would be for the fans of Monty and his work, and for the
purposes of informing them about the man that changed so many
lives with the things that he created. That is the audience I would
be trying to appeal to with this trailer and these two posters.
• I believe that I did very well in this task, as I am among the
audience that I would be aiming this hypothetical docufilm at, and
I'm happy with what I've made, upon looking at it again. There are
some problems with it, but I'm still happy with what I made.
Peer
Feedback
Feedback 1 (Harry Adkins-Pennington)
Strengths:
• The mix of different camera shots and filters worked incredibly well
• The music choices were perfect for the tone and style of the trailer
• The voice over work was really good as it sounds like a proper
documentary
• Great choices of the videos from RWBY to show your audience what the
show is and what it is like
Weaknesses:
• Perhaps try not looking at the camera as it looks less professional
• The upwards shot at the beginning scene doesn't work well in my opinion
because it causes unwanted light to show on the monitor, I would've gone
for either an over the shoulder shot or a slight side view so the monitor
can still be seen without unnecessary light blocking the screen
Feedback 2 (Rebecca Edwards)
The narration and background music used does help to convey the serious
tone this docufilm will most likely have. the noir filter used over the video
montage is excited well in terms of creating links to death/loss throughout
the rest of the trailer. When the trailer picks up near the end as well as the
speeding up of the mash up clips, it helps to lift the sombre mood and
show that this docufilm will also be filled with many positive aspects, as
well as displaying all the projects this person has worked on throughout
their life.
The main problem was mainly the dramatization at the beginning of the
trailer. You could have tried changing the camera angles when the camera
was on you rather than keeping it stationary, so to capture your
expressions more clearly, mainly close ups or straight on rather than to the
side looking up. You could have also recorded the browsing on the
computer and played that clip in between the expression shots rather
than trying to film the screen as well at the same angle.
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
– Looking into the camera looked less professional,
unwanted light showed on the monitor, I could've
used more camera angles during the 'dramatization', I
could've recorded my PC directly.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
– Nothing much, all the criticism that I received during
my peer feedback was valid and things that I'll take on
board for future projects.

Evaluation

  • 3. Research Strengths of my research: • The research I compiled regarding four existing products that I wished to take inspiration from in regards to my docufilm trailer/posters was very detailed, when it came to talking about specific parts of three movies and one anime that I wished to emulate in my game animation project. As well as this, I did research on the trailers of two products (those being Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Inception), and on the posters of a movie (that movie being Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) • I had easy access to places that I could find more information that helped me in my research, like YouTube and several other sites that gave me tips. Such tips included how to create certain effects that I thought would make my docufilm poster look better and more professional, and how to apply certain effects to video clips and text, which all plays into how I try to appeal to my target audience (that being fans of Monty Oum and his work). • Experiments I did in my video editing software at home gave me practice in cutting certain video clips to certain points in music (a common thing I did was cut clips to breaths that singers took in between the lines of the song that they sung, as in "This will be the day we waited for *cut*, This will be the day we open up the door *cut*, I don't want to hear your absolution *cut*, Hope you're ready for a revolution *cut*", etc.
  • 4. Planning 1 • One of the major strengths of my planning was the fact that I had more than one major idea as to what I could do for a docufilm poster (and that I was able to carry out both ideas to the best effect that I could). • One idea that I had was a poster similar to the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. The poster (pictured to the right) features a picture of Monty Oum that is halved down the middle, on one side, and the main character of the most famous series that Monty worked on (RWBY), a girl named Ruby Rose. The poster features a review from the movie site Flixter (a fictional review), and a quote from Monty himself, the quote being 'there is no futility, even in death'. The movie poster reveals the title of the movie itself (Indomitable), and the release year of the movie (2020). – The other of my two poster ideas was a poster inspired by the poster for the movie 'The Next Three Days'. The poster includes a picture of Monty Oum himself, and images of the four main characters of the web series RWBY: Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long, which implies that all of these things, these iconic characters, are inside Monty's head and waiting to get out and be shown to the world. Similarly to the first one, this docufilm poster also includes a quote from a fictional review from a fictional movie-reviewing website (Animation Today). The poster shows the title of the movie (Indomitable), and shows off the release year of the movie (2020) • Another strength of my video game animation project was that the schedule I had planned for what I was going to do throughout the entirety of the FMP was a schedule that I stuck to very well. This was something that I aspired to achieve during all of the other projects that I undertook this year, so this was an improvement for myself over my previous projects.
  • 5. Planning 2 • However, a weakness of my planning was that I could've put more things into my mood board (which, with very little exception, was focused on the things I was talking about in my research, such as movies like Bohemian Rhapsody and The Dark Knight, and things associated with Monty. If I were to do this FMP again, I would most likely branch out a little more to add more images into it.
  • 6. Time Management • My time management throughout the whole FMP, in my opinion, was pretty good. I stuck to the schedule that I had set out for myself in the proposal for this project for the entirety of said project (if I had to critique myself for something, I would admit that I rushed the production of the second docufilm poster, but this was due to circumstances beyond my control), and everything went the way I hoped that it would, with only a few small issues with Photoshop during production being what held me back. • I was able to complete my project on time, and I'm very happy with how I did throughout, from the PowerPoints explaining my vision for the docufilm that I would be promoting, to the docufilm trailer and posters themselves. • However, I believe that, if I had more time (and if certain things didn't happen that caused me to rush the production of the second poster), I would be able to fine-tune certain aspects of the second poster and make it as good as I believe the first poster was. However, a personal target I had set myself was to stick to the schedule I made for myself (something that I have had problems with in the past), so I had to leave the second poster the way it was, and submit that as the finished product.
  • 7. Technical Qualities (Trailer) • My docufilm trailer isn't the most technical thing ever produced, but I'm still proud of it, and I believe that it's a good product for what I was trying to convey. • My trailer started with a recounting of the first time I found the 'Red Trailer', the first piece of RWBY-related media ever released, on YouTube, and being completely floored by how much I loved the trailer, and how that managed to hook me on the show in an instant. This is accompanied by a 'dramatic recreation' of the event, starring me. • The second part of the trailer brings up the creator of RWBY, Monty Oum, who died of a severe allergic reaction in early 2015, and how the docufilm is going to be about him, and in tribute to him. This includes clips of Monty himself. All of these clips are in black and white, which is commonplace to do when bringing up a dead person in a documentary, even when there's available footage of the person in question in colour. • The final part of the docufilm trailer is comprised of more energetic footage of Monty himself, as well as action-filled clips of the series' he worked on, such as RWBY, Dead Fantasy and Haloid. This continues until the end, where the title of the movie 'Indomitable' is shown, along with a release year, that year being 2020.
  • 8. Aesthetic Qualities (Posters) • I think that the first poster that I made for my hypothetical docufilm is one of the best things I've ever made in Photoshop. I did everything I could to make it both reference Monty's work on RWBY, his most famous project, look aesthetically pleasing, and be simple all at the same time. In this, I believe I succeeded. • I believe I did the second poster pretty well, but not as well as the first. There were little things that, if you looked closer at the poster, seem incredibly out of place and unprofessional compared to the first poster (such as the transition from the colour of Monty's hair to a transparent inside of his head on the bottom of the poster. That's the one biggest glaring issue out of the entirety of the second poster, but apart from that, I am as proud of it as I am of the first poster.
  • 9. Audience Appeal • I did this entire FMP project for the purposes of marketing a potential docufilm about Monty Oum, the creator of one of my favourite fictional properties (RWBY) of all time, and one of the most famous animated web series' that has ever come out. If I had the funding or the time to go ahead and make this docufilm for real, it would be for the fans of Monty and his work, and for the purposes of informing them about the man that changed so many lives with the things that he created. That is the audience I would be trying to appeal to with this trailer and these two posters. • I believe that I did very well in this task, as I am among the audience that I would be aiming this hypothetical docufilm at, and I'm happy with what I've made, upon looking at it again. There are some problems with it, but I'm still happy with what I made.
  • 11. Feedback 1 (Harry Adkins-Pennington) Strengths: • The mix of different camera shots and filters worked incredibly well • The music choices were perfect for the tone and style of the trailer • The voice over work was really good as it sounds like a proper documentary • Great choices of the videos from RWBY to show your audience what the show is and what it is like Weaknesses: • Perhaps try not looking at the camera as it looks less professional • The upwards shot at the beginning scene doesn't work well in my opinion because it causes unwanted light to show on the monitor, I would've gone for either an over the shoulder shot or a slight side view so the monitor can still be seen without unnecessary light blocking the screen
  • 12. Feedback 2 (Rebecca Edwards) The narration and background music used does help to convey the serious tone this docufilm will most likely have. the noir filter used over the video montage is excited well in terms of creating links to death/loss throughout the rest of the trailer. When the trailer picks up near the end as well as the speeding up of the mash up clips, it helps to lift the sombre mood and show that this docufilm will also be filled with many positive aspects, as well as displaying all the projects this person has worked on throughout their life. The main problem was mainly the dramatization at the beginning of the trailer. You could have tried changing the camera angles when the camera was on you rather than keeping it stationary, so to capture your expressions more clearly, mainly close ups or straight on rather than to the side looking up. You could have also recorded the browsing on the computer and played that clip in between the expression shots rather than trying to film the screen as well at the same angle.
  • 13. Peer Feedback Summary • What do you agree with from your peer feedback? – Looking into the camera looked less professional, unwanted light showed on the monitor, I could've used more camera angles during the 'dramatization', I could've recorded my PC directly. • What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? – Nothing much, all the criticism that I received during my peer feedback was valid and things that I'll take on board for future projects.
