The Way of the Sword
Audience
My intended audience for my video game would mostly be male teenagers and adults that enjoy playing video
games. As my game would include pixel graphics inspired by platformer games that came out in the days of the
NES, SNES and Sega Megadrive (like Castlevania, Mega Man X and Sonic the Hedgehog), I imagine that adult
gamers who played these kinds of games, or younger gamers that are interested in the past eras of gaming, would
be interested in this game. I also believe that players of hack-and-slash games like Metal Gear Rising and God of
War would be interested in playing this game, as this game does include hack-and-slash elements.
Rationale
I have learned how to build up my Photoshop skills (such as how to animate better in Photoshop), and this will help
me animate what I would like to put together for my video game project. I will use these animating skills by showing
the main character of my game slicing through enemies, frame by frame, and run them quickly by each other, one
frame at a time, to make sure that the animation looks as smooth as possible.
My advergame had a direct impact upon this project because it was the first time I had tried animating something in
Photoshop, and I found out that through that, I’d become pretty good at it. With those animating skills acquired, I
think I can take on this video game animation project very well.
Project Concept
The concept of my video game project is that it’s a side-scrolling platformer in the style of 8 or 16-bit games (similar
to games like Shovel Knight) with hack and slash elements (similar to games like Metal Gear Rising or God of War).
The game follows a character that was the sole survivor of the destruction of his Clan by an enemy Clan, and who
wants revenge for that occurrence. The main character meets many different kinds of characters along his journey,
and the plot takes several twists and turns as more is revealed about the Clan that the main character belonged to.
The game would have a similar sense of humour (at certain moments, but most of the times, the game will have a
serious tone) to other pixelated indie games like Shovel Knight, Undertale and Celeste.
I would research into the sprite work of the three games mentioned earlier, in order to try and emulate the way the
characters are animated so I can make the game animation look even better.
Evaluation
One way of which I plan to evaluate my work on this video game animation project is by comparing it to the three
games mentioned earlier (Shovel Knight, Undertale and Celeste), and trying to make the video game animation that I
am making as good as the sprite animations that go into those games.
