2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. Who would be your audience for your media product?
2. Looking through my magazine, it is clear
who my audience is.
Firstly during the preparation period. I
came up with the audience for my
magazine. That being; teenagers.
This is because when I sent out my survey
monkey questionnaire. The majority of
people who answered were under 18’s. So I
took this into account and decided to make
this the age group for my magazine.
We can see throughout the magazine that
my magazine is for teenagers through
different aspects….
Who is your audience?
3. Content
Looking at the magazine content. The writing style definitely shows the
chosen age group. The article was written as a Q&A which is informal. Usually
teenagers would read this style of article. Because it is exciting and new for
them. However, someone of an older age group would prefer a more formal
article. So my article shows which group it is aimed at.
The writing style creates a connection between the reader and writer as the
style of writing is similar to they way the reader would write/think
themselves. This makes the reader feel like the writer is on their side as they
share similar thoughts and opinions.
4. Colour scheme and gender
The colour scheme also shows who my audience is.
The colours used are neutral which shows that the
gender my magazine is aimed at is aimed towards
both genders and not a specific one. We can also
see this in my images as I use models of both
genders throughout.
Mise-en-scene
The clothes worn are also clothes which any
gender could wear. Throughout my magazine the
models wear black jeans or just general jeans with
band t-shirts. This again brings across the idea that
my magazine is for both genders. As the magazine
clearly doesn’t present itself as being more male or
more female. I have purposely made every part of
the magazine equal. So hopefully boys and girls will
both be drawn to this magazine.
5. What Social Class is your audience?
As shown on my Pitch on slide 4, we can
see that my magazine is produced
monthly and only costs £2.80 per issue.
This shows that my magazine is aimed
towards and audience of the working
class. As it is at a cheap price and
produced monthly, meaning they can
afford each issue each month.
6. Reader Profile
From the reader profile we can also see that the audience is a music lover and
only that. The reader profile doesn’t go on to say much more or state that the
reader is into “gossip or cars” which would then mean that the magazine is
female or male. Instead it just states that they love music. Showing us that
the magazine is for any gender.
