In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
Evaluation – Question 1
A main convention on magazine averts are the artist and
the album/song name. Here we have placed this in black
and white, due to the simplicity of the colours, in the
middle of the page as it is then seen and noticed in the
best possible way.
Here is our finished magazine advert, it consists of two
photographs that have been taken as screen shots
from the video (single
individual shots). Theses have
been used as to us they sum
up the story behind the song
and the video the best. The
boy is the main person and
the singer in the song and the
3 locks, they are there to
symbolize the 3 girls also in
the video.
The dots in-between each letter on the writing have
been done to make the writing stand out a lot more
and it is a convention that is typically don’t on a lot of
indie pop adverts/CD covers.
We have used the ‘Parlophone’ company logo on here
as we felt as though it was important to include some
sort of company to the band. Most magazine adverts
use a lot more writing on there advert but as the
actual band are not touring at the moment we felt as
though it was best not to put it onto the advert. It
would have also gone over one of the photos and
made the advert look a little cluttered.
Our magazine advert was designed to be VERY minimalistic and when working in
a group considering everyone's individual ideas have to be done. Here are a few
examples of there minimalistic Indie Pop adverts that would be in the same
magazine as ours.
If I were to make this digipak by myself I would have added a lot more to it.
Firstly I would have only used one picture the idea of having the white band in
the middle is nice but I feel as though it just looks unfinished and a little bit
armature. Secondly I would have had a lot more writing on the advert, things
such as a release date, a little put of a sneak peak about what is going to be on
the album, maybe a few of the new songs. I would have also put on some ratings
from big names or other music company's or magazines. There should also be a
lot more legal information on the bottom of the advert not only so that the
company and the record label are protected but also because it is a convention
of 99% of adverts and just makes it look a lot more professional and finished.
Here is our finished digipak, it
consists of a fount and back half that
when printed out end up back to
back each side has 3 panels that n
total makes the 6 panel digipak.
The conventions for this type of
video are the front of the digipak will
have the artists name and the album
name on it. Most of the time they do
not actually have photographs on
the cover
they use
something
that is
related to
the video or
the main
video to but
as the cover
photo (or something abstract). So
due to knowing this we have used a
birds eye view of a record player. On
the back of the digipak, we have
used the track list and the pain part
of it as this is conventionally what is
put on the back of the digipak. It has
also go the list of what is on the
extra cd and informs the viewer
what is in the digipak before they
have even opened it.
On the inside of the digipak there are 4 panels that have got things on, two of
then use still shots and photographs that have been taken while shooting, they
have then been put into Photoshop and edited in different ways so that they all
work together with colors, this is something that a lot of bands do to
manipulate there photos to make then look the best they can and appealing to
the audience. The other two photos are a shot of the record player at a
different angle these photos have been faded out so that when the cd is placed
on top of these photos they do not stand out to much. There is normally a
photo that is linked that goes as the background as there is something that is
over the top so it is not always seen as much. All of the things that have been
put on the digipak relate to that of an indie pop convention.
Here are a few examples of digipaks that
fit into the indie pop category we are
looking at. Two of them are 6 panels' and
the other is a 4 panel pak with pull out
parts. One of these are the digipak I
looked at for my research and the other
two were more research that people have
done in my group. Have have put these on
here as I feel they are the main ones that
have been used as inspiration for our
actual final digipak, this can be seen
below as it will be produced.
Our final product uses conventions just
like these 3 such as the pictures in the
middle of the 3 panels so that the band
can be seen to the viewer. Also where
the CDs are going to be in the pack it
will be the image and the background
is plane or a faded out light picture.
There is no real area of this that
challenges the conventions of a digipak
for this genre of music. I feel as though
it is a good design for the indie pop
music.
The main convention of an indie pop music video and more specifically the matching video to our (My Type). Uses filters
over the whole of there video, this is a convention used a lot in indie pop music videos. We have used a similar filter
over our music video but only parts of it and we felt it didn't’t work over all of the video, this is where we have
challenged the conventions of a typical indie pop music video. We used it over a few so that the difference could be
seen, where and where not we had used the filter!
Live performance is another aspect of an indie music video that is a
convention, this is something we followed. Our film had various shots of a
live performance from the band, including full band shots and close ups of
the guitar and drums and singer and also point of view shots.
All of the band shots are done in there
normal colour and there are no filters on them. This is
to distinguish the different between the narrative
story line and the live performance. The live
performance is also in sink with that actual song and
not just random shots taken from different songs.
The actual music video that has the same song buy
the band has no live performance of the band. This
is where e have challenge the conventions of that
the band have done.
We found that it was better to use the conventions
of a typical music music video that most people
know, so that people know and feel familiar with the
conventions. We felt as though this was a better
idea. This is the main convention that out music
video has used.
There are also areas of the original music video that
have a lot of zoom into specific people. This is
something that we found too hard to match and
therefor could not do it. We still had areas of
significant zoom but did not used it to change scenes
or shots.
There are many shots in the video that look like the
original, this was unintentional but still it shows that
we have followed the conventions of the original
video.
One convention we have also followed is the live
footage shot, this includes band footage on the band
and the singer and singing of the lead singer. This is a
convention that is found in so many music videos
especially in the indie pop genre that we have been
following.
One thing that we have
not done is, put words
at the front of the
video.
We didn't’t do it as we
felt though I wouldn't’t
have worked as it is not
our own video.
Personally I wanted to
have the words of the
artist and the song
name at the start as I
felt as though it would
have made it more
professional and
expensive looking.
But with working in a
group we had to made
everyone's ideas count
and more people didn’t
want to have it than
did.
Also may have worked
if we had it at the end
as well, something to
round off the video.
