Abstract:
Today we are witnessing several shifts in scholarly practice, in and across multiple disciplines, as researchers embrace digital techniques to tackle established research questions in new ways and new questions afforded by digital and digitized collections, approaches, and technologies. Pervasive adoption of technology, coupled with the co-creation of new social processes, has created a new and complex space for scholarship where citizens both generate and analyse data as they interact at the intersection of the physical and digital. Drawing on a background in distributed computing, and adopting the lens of Social Machines, this talk discusses current activity in digital scholarship, framing it in its interdisciplinary settings.
Bio:
David De Roure is Professor of e-Research at University of Oxford, Director of the Oxford e-Research Centre, and chairs Oxford’s Digital Humanities research programme. He previously directed the Digital Social Research programme for the UK Economic and Social Research Council, and serves as a strategic advisor in new forms of data and realtime analytics. Trained in electronics and computer science, his career has involved interdisciplinary collaborations in chemistry, astrophysics, bioinformatics, social computing, digital libraries, and sensor networks. His personal research is in Computational Musicology, Web Science, and Internet of Things. He is a frequent speaker and writer on digital research and the future of scholarly communications. Observing Archives: Web Archiving as Socio-technical PracticeJessica Ogden
This paper presents the preliminary results of an ethnographic study of web archiving, in an effort to explore the ways in which practitioners shape the preservation and maintenance of the archived Web in its various forms. A combination of non/participant observation, documentary sources and interviews were conducted over the course of several weeks in collaboration with web archivists, engineers and managers at the Internet Archive – a private, non-profit digital library that has been archiving the Web since 1996. Whilst several socio- technical components of practice have been identified thus far, this paper focuses on the types of ‘knowledge work’ that informs the selection, collection, repair and maintenance of the archived Web(s). This work draws on Downey (2014) and recent calls within STS (Jackson 2014; Russell & Vinsel 2016) to move beyond a pre- occupation with innovation to consider the repair and maintenance of technologies as potential sites of critical engagement and social discourse. Here the concept of ‘web archival labour’ is proposed to encompass these practices and highlight the ways in which web archivists (as both networked human and non-human agents) shape and maintain the preserved Web through practices that are often embedded in and obscured by the complex technical arrangements of collection and access. As a result, this engagement positions web archives as places of knowledge and cultural production in their own right, revealing new insights into the performative nature of web archiving that have implications for how these new forms of social data are used and understood.

Digitisation initiatives began due to long term preservation concerns. Questions concerning their impact have now come to the fore: “The measurable outcomes arising from the existence of a digital resource that demonstrate a change in the life or life opportunities of the community for which the resource is intended.” Jewish and Israeli digital resources can now be enhanced with relevant encyclopedias and controlled vocabularies through a LOD approach. The resulting knowledge grid can help bridge the gap between the digital resources and the knowledge of the intended communities of users. It will expand their application in narratives, scholarly research, higher education, K12, cultural tourism, genealogy and more.

In 2006 a group of library and information studies academics and experts from three European universities – Oslo University College in Norway, Tallinn University in Estonia and the University of Parma in Italy - began talks and consultations to develop a Master programme to impart knowledge and skills in digital libraries. The outcome was the formation of the two-year International Master in Digital Library Learning (DILL) programme. After taking in the first batch of 18 students from 16 different countries across the world in 2007, DILL has continued to train different cohorts of varying numbers in the last decade. In this paper, I identify the various stages in DILL’s developmental process following a community of practice framework by (Wenger and Snyder, 2000). Data was drawn primarily from literature including the various DILL websites from the different consortia institutions, combined with a reflection of my own experience of the DILL programme and activities. My analysis of the DILL programme is mainly based on the activities of its first two years, as I was a member of the first batch of DILL students. However, my continuous association with key contacts in the programme also offered useful observations that provided data for this study. While DILL was planned to primarily provide education for the Digital Librarian new professional, specific details of the programme also offer extensive knowledge in other areas including understanding of innovative digital services, interactive digital exhibitions, gamification techniques (such as topic maps), etc. There was also understanding of skills in knowledge management and human resource management, which are still relevant for emerging trends in modern global education and digital information environment. The programme is rich with expert local professors and numerous visiting lecturers who made DILL a unique learning experience.
DILL programme is developing into a virtual community of experts who collaborate from various locations of the world to discuss and share ideas not only on digital library related issues, but also other issues that can enhance the development of members within the community and beyond. DILL provides a useful model for other disciplines where experts seek to collaborate to develop consortia programmes to advance knowledge in their area. The fast developing digital technologies and changing library and information studies environment have resulted in new competencies and skills required of modern digital librarians. As DILL steps into its second decade, the programme may be more effective if its curriculum content is targeted to evenly assess the professional knowledge, generic skills and specific personal competencies of today’s digital librarians.

Presentation at the ISTME Conference (In Search of Transcultural Memory in Europe). it took place in University College Dublin on September 3rd, 2016. The presentation deals with a citizen science project for digitization and cataloging by a group of volunteers of the archives of the youth movement Dror (Brazil, now Habonim Dror) related to the Dror / Freiheit movement in pre WWII in Poland. It refers to the application of Wikidata for the enrichment and provision of context for the digitized documents.

He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
