Funder RDM requirements and projects’ experiences - Insights from the case st...Daniel Spichtinger
This document summarizes a project that analyzed Horizon 2020 Data Management Plans (DMPs) to identify good practices and challenges. Over 100 project participants provided feedback on their DMP experiences in a survey. Key findings include that the Horizon 2020 DMP requirement significantly increased data management knowledge, but beginners often felt lost without support. Most respondents did not publish their DMPs. The results were published in a peer-reviewed article and supplementary materials to help researchers develop DMPs for European projects.

Horizon 2020 Data Management Plans: what beneficiaries think and what we can...Daniel Spichtinger
In Horizon 2020, the European Commission ran an initial research data pilot scheme (ORD Pilot) which was extended to the whole programme as of the work programme 2017. The aim of this project was to analyze Horizon 2020 DMP Use cases to identify good practices but also common challenges and mistakes amongst a number of use cases across different disciplines.
OPEN ACCESS AND FAIR DATA: INTRODUCTION, FUNDER NEEDS & REQUIREMENTSDaniel Spichtinger
This document discusses open access and fair data requirements for research funders. It begins with an introduction to the presenter and their background working on open access policies. It then covers the key dimensions of open science including open access to publications and research data. It discusses funder mandates for open access from the EU and other international funders. The benefits of open access for science, the economy and society are outlined. Finally, it covers open access policies for Horizon 2020 grants and the transition from open data to promoting FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data management principles.
This document discusses the ethics of open science, focusing on open access to publications and research data. It outlines several benefits of open access, including increased citations, reproducibility of research, avoidance of duplication, and economic and societal impacts. However, it also notes some issues, such as predatory publishers that charge fees without providing editorial services. It provides tips for avoiding predatory publishers and suggests that open access does not preclude patenting or require publishing. While open research data brings benefits, it also raises issues around personal data protection, national security, and intellectual property that may require some data to remain closed or embargoed. Overall, the document aims to start a discussion around balancing the benefits of open science with ethical concerns.
This document discusses the revised 2018 European Commission recommendation on open access to scientific information. The recommendation updates the 2012 version to reflect developments in open science practices and EU digital policies. Key changes include encouraging member states to develop clear open access policies and action plans with objectives, responsibilities, and financial plans. The updated recommendation also incorporates research data management, text and data mining, and the European Open Science Cloud. While progress has been made in open access, challenges remain around awareness, implementation of incentives, and monitoring member state progress.
Open Access (OA) provides online access at no charge to peer-reviewed scientific publications and research data. There are two main OA publishing models: self-archiving, where authors deposit manuscripts for immediate or delayed OA; and OA publishing, where publishers provide immediate OA through an "author-pay" model. OA is not an obligation to publish, does not affect patenting rights, and publications still undergo the same peer review process as non-OA publications. The European Commissioner views OA as important for sharing knowledge using digital technologies and collaborative tools, representing a systemic change in how science and research are conducted.
AHMR is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed online journal created to encourage and facilitate the study of all aspects (socio-economic, political, legislative and developmental) of Human Mobility in Africa. Through the publication of original research, policy discussions and evidence research papers AHMR provides a comprehensive forum devoted exclusively to the analysis of contemporaneous trends, migration patterns and some of the most important migration-related issues.

RFP for Reno's Community Assistance CenterThis Is Reno

Combined Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Vessel List.Christina Parmionova
The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

Horizon 2020 is Open to the World.
“This means that participants from all over the
world, regardless of their place of establishment
or residence, can participate in most of the calls
of Horizon 2020.
In many cases, the EU will fund at least partly the
participation of the international partners.
In addition to this general openness, several
topics strongly encourage or require cooperation
with non-EU partners in collaborative projects,
target a certain country/region or refer to global
initiatives.”

9. INTERNATIONAL R&D COOPERATION
STRATEGIC, OPEN,AND RECIPROCAL
Last (and first) strategy on EU global R&D collaboration from 2012, update needed
Trying to reconcile traditionally open approach to global research cooperation
with “a transformed global landscape, where geopolitical tensions are rising and
human rights and fundamental values are being challenged”.
New strategy for International cooperation on research and innovation in
a changing world (May 2021, Communication from the Commission):
Promote openness and values in R&I
Pursue level playing field and reciprocity (e.g., through strategic roadmaps, e.g with China)
Pool global efforts to tackle global challenges (e.g.All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance)
Modulate cooperation with third countries (targeted international cooperation actions in
calls for proposals in areas of mutual interest under Horizon Europe, exploit the
opportunities for association to Horizon Europe).
Discussion and further development as part of the Slovenian EU presidency’s
priorities, which will prepare council conclusions on the subject.
