This document provides a quarterly report on European tourism trends and prospects for the first quarter of 2015. It finds that European tourism is expected to grow between 3-4% in 2015, in line with the world average. Early data shows a positive start to the year for most destinations. Growth is being supported by intra-regional travel within Europe as economies stabilize. The report also examines performance and outlook for various source markets such as the US, Russia, and others. It concludes by discussing joint efforts to promote European tourism and ensure the region remains a top destination.
European tourism growth remains solid at the beginning of the year confirming the continued positive performance of European destinations.
Positive results before the summer period are driven by increased demand from both intra-regional and overseas markets.
These results confirm the sustained upward trend estimated for 2015 and proves the on-going efforts of destinations to fight seasonality.
Competitiveness in South East Europe: A Policy Outlook (2016)OECDglobal
Future economic development and the well being of citizens in South East Europe (SEE) depend more than ever on greater economic competitiveness. To underpin the drive to improve competitiveness and foster private investment, an integrated policy approach is needed. This first edition of Competitiveness in South East Europe: A Policy Outlook seeks to help policy makers in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, and Serbia assess their progress towards their growth goals and benchmark them against the good practices adopted by OECD countries and the performance of their regional peers.
This report addresses 15 policy dimensions critical to competitive economies that draw on the South East Europe 2020 Strategy (SEE 2020), a regional growth strategy drawn up by the Regional Cooperation Council and adopted by SEE governments in 2013. The qualitative assessments presented herein use scoring frameworks to enable regional comparisons. A participatory assessment process – that brings together regional policy networks and organisations, policy makers, independent experts and the private sector – ensures a balanced view of performance.
"Highlights":
Economy faces temporary slowdown
Loan portfolio is showing some signs of moderation
External trade activity drops due to slowdown in re-exports
"In Focus":
Retail trade developments, by Daina Paula

The efforts to stabilize the Moldovan economy after the crisis of 1998 have been largely successful. The country avoided international default as current account position radically improved, cooperation with international financial institutions was re-established and a significant primary fiscal surplus was achieved. As a result, the exchange rate was stabilised and inflation substantially reduced. Moreover, several important structural reforms were implemented and privatisation of key-industries pursued with much more determination than previously. However, only economic growth would bring real solutions to the persistent problems of external and internal imbalances of the Moldovan economy and would allow the country to face its heavy debt burden in the future. Unfortunately, prospects for sustainable growth remain weak, as the most important issues that constrain private entrepreneurship and investments have not been effectively tackled. These issues include: lack of territorial integrity, ineffective legal system, widespread corruption and rent seeking. It is unlikely that these problems can be solved until the Moldovan parliament assumes full ownership of reform process.

An outstanding tourism performance in Europe in 2015 augurs well for continued growth into 2016 following the 5% increase in international tourist arrivals recorded last year. Almost all monitored destinations saw robust results in both overnights and arrivals over January-February 20162, however, figures are expected to moderate as the year progresses. Among the top performers worldwide, strong growth was posted by Spain (+12.5%) – reflecting their efforts to fight seasonality – followed by Austria and Germany (both +5%). In line with the past year’s trend, Turkey (-8.5%) saw arrivals from its key source markets dampen largely due to on-going political and safety challenges.

Over the past six decades, tourism has emerged as one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. Through its
contribution in employment generation, infrastructure development and export revenue, it has been playing an important
role in the socio-economic progress. Expenditure incurred in the destinations on accommodation, food, entertainment,shopping etc leads to foreign exchange earnings and as a result contributes to the GDP. This has led the nations enhance their investments in the development of Travel & Tourism (T&T).
