European tourism growth remains solid at the beginning of the year confirming the continued positive performance of European destinations.
Positive results before the summer period are driven by increased demand from both intra-regional and overseas markets.
These results confirm the sustained upward trend estimated for 2015 and proves the on-going efforts of destinations to fight seasonality.
A quarterly insights report produced for the Market Intelligence Group of the European Travel Commission (ETC)
by Tourism Economics (an Oxford Economics Company)
An outstanding tourism performance in Europe in 2015 augurs well for continued growth into 2016 following the 5% increase in international tourist arrivals recorded last year. Almost all monitored destinations saw robust results in both overnights and arrivals over January-February 20162, however, figures are expected to moderate as the year progresses. Among the top performers worldwide, strong growth was posted by Spain (+12.5%) – reflecting their efforts to fight seasonality – followed by Austria and Germany (both +5%). In line with the past year’s trend, Turkey (-8.5%) saw arrivals from its key source markets dampen largely due to on-going political and safety challenges.

Having in mind the steady and rapid growth of the tourism sector and number of tourists in the world, it is especially important for Serbia to invest in this sector and to adapt its offer to the different demands of tourists coming from the local and global environment. A large number of Chinese people and middle-class growth in China are certainly some of the reasons why Chinese tourists in the world are gaining increasing importance. The benefits of those tourists have been felt by all countries that have managed to attract them, such as Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, America and several destinations in Europe, including Spain, Great Britain, Italy and France. Although in Serbia the number of tourists from China is not large, this number is growing significantly year after year. One of the reasons is a visa-free regime, but that should not have to be the only reason. Serbia must seriously engage in a race for tourists from China.

After stabilization in 1993 Moldova maintained an unsustainable macroeconomic policy mix. The key problem was a lack of a fiscal adjustment, which resulted in large budget deficits. At the same time, the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) attempted to conduct a tight monetary policy. As a result, the exchange rate was appreciating, domestic absorption increasingly exceeded income and the country has been running large Current Account deficits. Moldova had an access to international financial markets and its indebtedness vs. the rest of the world was growing year by year at an alarming rate. Finally, in late 1998 Moldova suffered a balance of payments crisis, directly triggered by developments in Russia. Moldovan leu was devalued by about 70% and the current account improved.
The paper concentrates on the empirical dimension of the Moldovan financial crisis. It provides a case study of a) detecting and interpreting macroeconomic anomalies and b) identification of early warning signals of policy unsustainability and imminent change of financial market sentiment.
