The European Ruffe is a small invasive fish species that originated in Europe and was introduced to the Great Lakes region through ballast water from ships. It resembles several native fish but has distinguishing features like spots on its fins and no scales on its head. The Ruffe is harmful because it outcompetes native fish for food and preys on their eggs, impacting populations of yellow perch and others. This has significant economic effects as the fishing industry generates billions annually. Steps taken to reduce the Ruffe population include introducing predators and restricting their transport and use as bait. Preventing further spread involves proper identification and containment of the Ruffe if encountered.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is well known for its efforts to preserve marine wildlife. Its approach of both documenting and intervening in illegal activities at sea sets it apart from other animal rights organizations. Since 1977, its fleet of ships has worked hard to save whales, sharks, dolphins, bluefin tuna, and seals, and has also documented the damage caused by oil spills.

For a beginning fisherman, Bluegill are tough to beat. Bluegills are found in most bodies of freshwater and are easy to catch. Paul Katsus would also like to point out, they excellent table fare.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. What is a European Ruffe?
A European Ruffe is a small
fish that originated in Europe.
An adult is 4 to 6 inches long
very rarely 8 inches long.
They could resemble a number
of young fish such as: walleye ,
sauger, yellow perch, Johnny
darter, or trout perch.
Careful, because it has hard
sharp spines!
It has spots between the rays
on the dorsal fins. They have
slightly downturned mouths.
There are no scales on their
heads. They are very, very
slimy!
3. How did it get here?
•This invasive fish got here
by fresh ballast water of
ocean going vessels.
•The fish could have
accidentally gotten in bait
buckets.
•They were dumped in the
St. Louis River later
traveling to almost all of
the Great Lakes.
•They feel at home in a
variety of environments.
4. How is this invasive
species harmful?
•This fish steals food
from other native fish.
•It eats other fish's eggs.
•The yellow perch and
other native fish are
going hungry.
•They may be small but
they sure are harmful.
5. What is the
Economic impact?
•Fishing and sport fishing
make $4,000,000,000 each
year.
•They are stopping that from
happening, people are losing
jobs.
•Along with overfishing and
pollution, invasive species
pose the greatest economic
threat to fisheries in the
• Great Lakes Region.
6. What steps were
being taken or are
being taken?
•They released predators
such as the Walleye,
Northern pike, and the
Muskie.
•It is now illegal to
harvest wild bait fish
from Ruffe infested
waters such as Lake
Superior, its tributaries
in Minnesota,
Wisconsin, and
Michigan.
7. What can we do to
prevent further
spread of this
organism?
•Don’t use Ruffe as
fish bait.
•Learn how to
identify a Ruffe.
•Know what to do if
you find a Ruffe.
8. What do I think
about this invasive
species?
•I think it is a threat
because it harms and eats
other fishes eggs. It
prevents fishers from doing
their jobs and for that
reason lots of people get
fired!!
•I think that it is important
to know what to do when
you find a Ruffe and learn
how to identify a Ruffe,
and to report it
immediately.
