Report on ETRC events in September 2014
According to the project proposal for ETRC activities in September 2014 there were planned 5 seminars: 2
for experienced school teachers, 2 for novice school teachers who have less than 5 years of teaching practice
and a seminar for university lecturers. All the vents were successfully organized.
A group of 9 novice teachers from Chisinau met on the 4th and 11th of September 2014. They attended a
demonstrative lesson by Stella Grama from Prometeu-Prim luceum “Health Hazards”, which was prepared on
the basis of the material required in schools for the 9yh form. All the attendees were totally satisfied with the
content of the presentations, but marked in their feedbacks column “fairly satisfied” for clarity of instructions,
time allocated for every task, and the use of visual aids. The sesond session was dedicated to “Teaching Perfect
Tenses” and it was delivered by Anna Lisnic-Gabur from American Councils. All the participants highly
appreciated the presentation and the readiness of the presenter to answer their questions and share useful
teaching tips. The news about training for teachers who are just starting their career has been spread all over
Moldova and new teachers from Tiraspol and Chisinau will join these sessions in October.
A group of 10 experienced teachers met on the 18th and 25th of September. They had Niculina Velea from “Ion
Creanga” lyceum as a presenter, who spoke about “Reading for a Reason”. The participants were asked to
evaluate thepresentation and they mentioned that what seemed to go well was well-chosen texts, interesting
tasks, bright presentation, interesting topic and lots of material. Some mentioned that if they were to deliver the
workshop, they would update the texts and would try more to involve the audience. The second speaker for the
group pf experienced teachers was Natalia Schneider from “Alexei Mateevici” lyceum. She shared her personal
experience of teaching English in Moldovan, british and American schools. Teachers had to find differences and
similarites between the teaching processes and received information on how to find foreign school partners.
Seminar for university lecturers was held on the 24th of September by Daniela Aftenev-Munca, presenting
“Assessment techniques for EFL college students”. The seminar was attended by 3 lecturers, 2 of them coming
from Tiraspol.
Besides this, ETRC hosted a movies session for students on the 5th of September and had 3 meetings of FACE
discussion club. Every meeting was faciliated by a native english speaker: Trish Ostrosky, PCV, who spoke about
CHOCOLATE; Mark Laskin, Visiting Scholar, who presented about FAMILY PLANNING; and Berkend Pura, PCV,
who discussed BIRTHDAYS. Every discussion was attended in avergage by a group of 10-11 students from
universities and lyceums, such as “L. Blaga”, “I. Creanga”, “Mircea cel Batrin”, “T. Vladimirescu”.
2. Report on ETRC events in October 2014

seminar for university lecturers. All the events were successfully organized.
Seminars for novice teachers were organized on the 1st and 3rd Thurasdays of the month. Presenters were
local teachers of English: Marina Kirnitcaia from American Councils with the topic “Teaching Young Learners”
and Svetlana Lungu from “M. Eminescu” lyceum presenting the topic “Bridging the skills gap in multi-level and
mixed ability classes”. Seminars fro experience school teachers were held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the
month. Liliana Nederita from “G. Calinescu lyceum” spoke about “Teaching listening skills in the 21st century”
and Larisa Gubina from “N. Milescu-Spataru” lyceum presented “Hot to organize Halloween party in school.”
The seminars in average were attended by 8-10 people. The workshops were highly appreciated by the
participants as they dealt with the issues that represent interests for local teaching community and that are
focused on easing the task of teachers and improving the quality of the education.
The seminar for university lecturers was organized on the 14th of October. It was facilitated by Adam Levy,
Fulbright Scholar and attended by 6 teachers, 5 of whom came from Tiraspol. The topic under discussion was
“How to use popular approaches to humor and satire in the realm of geopolitics and international relations in
the classroom” The participants found the material presented interesting and possible to adapt to their own
needs as all of them were teaching different levels and different courses.
October 27-30 was dedicated to FALL SCHOOL – training that included 2-4
seminars per day and had 77 registered participants from all over Moldova.
Report on this event is done separately.
Besides this, ETRC organized 5 meetings of FACE discussion club. Every
meeting was faciliated by a native English speaker: Amy Samuelson, PCV, who
spoke about Indiana state; Berkend Pura, PCV, who discussed Shopping,
Technology in our life; Kim Evarista, Fulbright Scholar who spoke about Horror
Films. The last meeting on the 31st of October was dedicated to Halloween and
the participants had to come in a costume and describe it during the meeting, the
organizers voted for the best outfit and played the game Do you know…?
The discussion meetings were in average attended by 16-18 students, the
majority coming from the local high schools.
3. Report on ETRC events in November 2014
In November 2014 there were held 8 seminars in ETRC: 2 for experienced school teachers, 2 for novice
school teachers who have less than 5 years of teaching practice, 3 seminars for all English teachers interested in
improving the quality of teaching, and a seminar for university lecturers.
Seminars for novice teachers were organized on the 5th and 19th of November. Presenters were local teachers
of English: Marina Kirnitcaia from American Councils with the topic “Get-
to-know you activities” and David Jesse, AC director presenting the topic
“Praise and the paradox of correctness”. There were 4 teachers present at
Mr. Jesse’s seminar and 12 teachers attended Ms. Kirnitskaia’s seminar.
Seminars for experience school teachers were held on the 13th and 27th of
November. Agunik Sagoyan from Chisinau lyceum presented
demonstrative lesson based on local textbooks for the 9-12th form “Labels
and stereotypes” and Andrei Fiodorov from “Terranova language center”
presented “Common mistakes done by Moldova students of English.” There
were 5 people present at Sagoyan’s seminar and 8 attendees at Fiodorov’s
session. Besides this there were held 2 sessions that could be attended by
English teachers without limits in their teaching experience. These
sessions were held by native speakers of English: Sheryl Feinstein,
Fulbright, Tim Schneider, PCV and Nicholas Huzieff, ELF. The workshops were highly appreciated by the
participants as they dealt with the issues that represent interests for local teaching community and that are
focused on easing the task of teachers and improving the quality of the education.
The seminar for university lecturers was organized on the 11th of November. It was facilitated by Daniela
Munca-Aftenev “Alternative Assessment for
EFL students” and attended by 2 lecturers.
Besides this, ETRC organized 4 meetings of
FACE discussion club. Every meeting was
facilitated by a native English speaker or ETRC
staff: Lynn Frances, PCV, who planned with
participants a tour around Chisinau; Adam
Levy, Fulbright who discussed Oakland and
San Francisco. Also we spoke about American
culture, people, jobs, and holidays. During the
Thanksgiving there was organized a thematic
party to share apiece of America in ETRC office.
The party was attended by 19 students. In
average every meeting was attended by 17
people. This cultural event included contests,
songs, games, students’ presentations, crafts
and potluck dinner.

4. Report on ETRC events in December 2015
In December2014 there were held 5 seminars in ETRC: 2 for experienced school teachers, 2 for novice school
teachers who have less than 5 years of teaching practice, and a seminar for university lecturers.
Seminars for novice teachers were organized on the 4th and 18th of December. Presenters were local teachers
of English: Cristina Macaev from 6 Gymnasium with the topic “Wonders of Nature – demonstrative lesson for
the 6th form” and Marcela Calchei, from Moldova State University presenting the topic “Praise Bringing Writing
Back into the Classroom”. These seminars were in average attended by 5 novice teachers. Seminars for
experience school teachers were held on the 11th and 25th of November. Anna Gabur from ALC presented
“Short and Effective writing exercises and techniques” and Doina Morari from “ACCESS” presented “Holiday
games and activities for the EFL classroom.” There were 8 people present at Gabur’s seminar and 10 attendees
at Morari’s session. As this was the last session in 2014 we also organized a small Christmas party for ETRC
teaching community and presenters of the I semester were awarded certificates for delivering workshops in

The seminar for university
lecturers was organized on the 17th of Dcember. It was facilitated by English Language Fellow from Balti,
Nicholas Huzieff “Correcting Students’ Errors”. The session was attended by 13 university lecturers from
different institutions.
Besides this, ETRC restarted course of English for teachers of other subjects. In collaboration with the
students majoring in English the course united teachers of Biology, Math, History, Primary classes, etc in their
desire to learn English. On pure volunteer basis students, Daniela Tragic and Anghel Cristina, taught teachers
Basic English skills. In December there were organized 15 sessions – 30- hours of English for 2 different groups
of teachers.
As usual every Friday ETRC held Discussion Club for English lovers. There were organized 3 meetings of
FACE discussion club. Every meeting had a facilitator responsible for organizing activities and keep the
discussion flowing: Berkend Pura, PCV presented Business Talk; Lynn Frances, PCV, who spoke about
Christmas in USA; and students from Ion Creanga lyceum, Valeria Cobiltean and Veronica Burbulea, prepared a
presentation on Youth and Health. The minimum number of participants was 10, the maximum in December
