This newsletter from the Chinese Language Teachers' Association of Western Australia provides information about upcoming events and recaps recent activities. In the first section, it announces professional development events for teachers in March and June and opportunities for students to participate in a storytelling competition and excursions. The second section describes an Oberthur Primary School program teaching subjects in Mandarin and a student trip to Harbin, China where they experienced cultural activities and sightseeing.

I hope you all had a won- derful and relaxed holiday and are well charged for the new term. Term 1 was an eventful term, highlighted with ACA- RA’s extensive consultation on the Draft Australian Curriculum for Languages - Chinese. Our member teachers have been greatly involved in this nation wide consultation project and provided very important feedback. Four WA schools were selected as trial schools for the draft Curriculum, and more detailed and intensive engagement of teachers and students has been established. The whole day PD in March provided members and colleagues with a better understanding of the Draft Australia Curriculum – Chinese, and the updates that have been made to it. The session on How to Design Effective Chinese Second Language Lessons was also very well re- ceived. The first Western Australia Story Telling Competition for Heritage and Background Students (首届西澳华裔学生讲故事大赛) in Term 1 high- lighted the high level of Chinese language skills of our 26 contestants and provided them with the opportunity to show case their talents. The 42 attendees of the Principals and Teachers Networking Cocktail on the 10th of April enjoyed a fantastic opportunity to network, socialise and exchange information with other schools and their teachers. Term 2 up coming events for CLTAWA include Pandas’ Picnic excursion for primary schools and year 9 Day excursion in week 6. Five students will be representing WA in the Australia High School Hanyuqiao Compe- tition to be held in Adelaide in June. We wish them success and fingers crossed that they will win the opportunity to compete in China in the International Chinese Proficiency Competition later in the year. The CLTFA 19th Annual Conference will be held in Canberra on the 6th and 7th of July. This is a wonderful national PD for Chinese educators and provides extensive networking opportunities. - 2. CLTAWA Newsletter NEW TEACHERSGATHERING On Saturday 23rd February CLTAWA hosted a gathering to welcome new teachers. The gathering provided new teachers with the opportunity to talk to the CLTAWA committee in a casual setting about the teaching profession, openly ask questions and for the CLTAWA to offer our support. The CLTAWA would like to thank the teachers that came along to the event. May you have a successful and rewarding career in the teaching profession! PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EVENT The CLTAWA held a Professional Development event on Saturday 16th March at Oberthur Primary School. There was a sizeable turnout, with a total of 29 members attending. The day began with an update on the ‘Australian Curriculum Languages: Chinese’ paper by CLTAWA President Jieqi Zhang. A panel session then followed, with CLTFA President Anita Chong, CLTAWA Vice President Bonnie Woo and CLTAWA Committee members Xiao Yu and Priscilla Prince. They spoke of their experiences and gave some possible strategies to address questions members had provided via email and during the session. Professor Xianhua Chu, the Associate Director of the Confucius Institute WA, provided a very insightful presentation on how to effectively design lessons for students learning Chinese as a second language. Professor Chu’s session was both informative and thought provoking, giving teachers some things to consider when planning lessons and programs. The final presentation introduced members to the Engaging China Project WA, a not-for-profit organisation which aims to inspire young Australians to engage with China. India Mustard the President of the Engaging China Project WA tspoleabout the organisation on a state and national level, while her colleague Tierney McPartland went more in depth on how the Project can help schools strengthen interest in learning Mandarin. Members were also delighted by a surprise visit by a giant panda bear that handed out lucky red packets to all attendees. - 3. CLTAWA Newsletter On the23rd of March CLTAWA organised its first ever Story Telling Competition for background and heritage students. Held in the Kurrajong Lecture Theatre at the Confucius Institute, a total of 26 stu- dents ranging from 4 to 18 years old competed in different categories according to their age. This event was strongly supported by the Consulate General of China in Perth and the Confucius Institute. The competition was the first of its kind in promoting students of Chinese origin to be proud of their ancestry, demonstrating their Chinese language skills and cultural knowledge. 学习祖籍语 留住我的根 ――首届西澳华裔中小学生讲故事大赛圆满结束 3月23日，由西澳中文教师协会主办的首届西澳华裔中小学生讲故事大赛在西澳大学孔子学院成功举办。 这次活动是西澳第一次面对全州中小学华裔学生的汉语比赛。旨在鼓励华裔学生努力学习中文，并通过比赛 增进学生的口语表达能力。 这次比赛的筹备得到了中国驻珀斯总领馆及西澳大学孔子学院的大力支持。中国驻珀斯总领馆的刘禹同 副总领事、邓方领事，西澳大学孔子学院中方院长褚献华教授，澳大利亚中文教师联会会长林少莲女士，中 华会馆高级副会长饶逸生先生，东方文化艺术协会会长Edward Chin先生，西澳中国语言文化中心会长洪淑贞 女士，以及 Oberthur小学校长Tim Bamber先生作为特邀嘉宾参加了开幕式。邓方领事和褚献华院长还作为特 邀评委参加了评判。刘禹同副总领事为大赛致了开幕辞。刘副总领事在讲话中充分肯定了华裔学生在海外中 华文化传承中的重要地位，并赞扬了西澳中文教师协会在组织面向华裔学生的汉语活动方面的创新精神。 本次大赛得到了全州开设中文课程的中小学及社区中文学校的积极参与，参赛选手来自十六个学校，年 龄跨度从幼儿班到高中十一年级，选手们活泼生动的表演不时引起场上观众热烈的掌声。 比赛结束后，邓方领事、褚献华院长和Tim Bamber校长代表赞助单位为选手们颁发了证书和奖杯。西澳 中文教师协会会长张洁绮女士致了闭幕词。张会长在讲话中盛赞了选手们努力学习、积极参与的精神，并对 参赛学校、辅导老师以及赞助单位表示了衷心的感谢。 作为第一次面向华裔学生的汉语竞赛，本次活动弥补了以往中文（汉语）教学活动忽视华侨华裔学生的 不足，给了华侨华裔学生一个交流及展现祖籍语言文化的平台。我们衷心希望此次活动能够增进华裔学生学 习中文的积极性，并使西澳的中文教育得到更加全面的发展。 May 2013 3 Story Telling Competition Cat. 1 Winners 7 year olds Cat. 4 Winners 11-12 year olds Cat. 1 Winners 4-6 year olds Cat. 3 Winners 8-10 year olds Cat. 5 Winners 13-15 year olds Cat. 6 Winners 16-18 year olds

CLTAWA Newsletter CHINESE IMMERSIONPROGRAM AT OBERTHUR PRIMARY SCHOOL After gaining the support of the school council and also more than 95% positive responses from the parents of the pre-primary students, Oberthur Primary School launched WA’s first Chinese immersion program for its three Pre-Primary classes. The program is funded by school and each PP class has 7 ½ hour contact hours per week using Chinese Mandarin as a target language to teach Chinese Literacy, Mathematics: Numbers and Space, Society and Environment, Music and Physical Education. The school employed 2 immersion teachers who have been working very closely with the classroom teachers on cross curriculum teaching. The program has received very positive feedback from school community and parents. Most students have gradually settled into this foreign teaching environment and some have even started speaking Chinese to adults spontaneously and teaching their siblings and parents Mandarin at home. One interesting feedback: “I can’t stop my child singing her Mandarin songs!” Students from Year 1 – 7 at Oberthur PS have 2 hours Chinese language and culture per week. MEETING HARBIN At the end of 2012 twenty-one students from various high and community schools made a two week trip to Harbin under the auspices of the PRC State Council's Overseas Chinese Office. A variety of activities were organised for participants including lectures on Chinese and Chinese culture, hands-on calligraphy courses, a variety of Chinese dance and martial arts training, and exchange, and recreational competitions. Campers stayed in a hotel and enjoyed its restaurant where students offered a wealth of dishes each meal. In addition, the campers were invited to go to different restaurants to try Northeastern dishes, dumplings and the Northeast small pot, giving them a chance to try a different kind of food —that of North-east China. The organisers of the winter camp arranged a wealth of sightseeing activities. Participants visited the "Tiger forest" to meet the Amur tiger known as the "King of the jungle" . They were surprised when in as little as ten minutes they saw hundreds of sizes of the Amur tiger, and also the real "white tiger". At the famous "Sun island" they saw a snow day and night. There were dozens of metres of snow and crystal clear ice sculptures. THeir first skiing experience was exciting for all. 相约哈尔滨 ――2012年珀斯华裔青少年中国寻根之旅纪实 应中国国务院侨办、哈尔滨市侨办的邀请，柏斯一行二十一名同学在中华会馆黎明中文学校校长和珀斯 华文学校校长李华的带领下在2012年底从烈日炎炎的澳洲珀斯飞往寒风凛凛的中国东北，参加中国寻根之旅 冬令营活动。 这次由中国国侨办主办，哈尔滨市外侨办、哈尔滨学院承办的“2012年海外华裔青少年中国民族舞蹈及 中华武术冬令营”历时两周，营员包括来自澳大利亚、新西兰、马来西亚、印度尼西亚、菲律宾和缅甸的175 位华裔青少年朋友以及15位带队老师。珀斯队的二十一名营员分别来自黎明中华中文学校、柏斯华文学校、 柏斯现代中学、乐思中学、Hale中学、Churchland 中学和Grace Christian学校。他们的年龄在十二到十八岁。 所有的营员都是第一次来到冰天雪地的哈尔滨，在短短两周时间里，同学们充分感受了中国东北的冰情雪 韵，感受了黑龙江、哈尔滨特有的文化魅力。 组委会对冬令营活动非常重视，开幕式由哈尔滨市侨务委员会关副主任主持，国务院侨办唐女士和市侨 办对外联络处张莲玉处长致欢迎词，出席开幕式的还有哈尔滨市副市长、哈尔滨学院院长、副书记等领导 人。作为承办高校，哈尔滨学院为冬令营安排了丰富多彩的活动内容，有汉语知识讲座和中华文化讲座，有 动手又动脑的书法课程，有方式多样的中华民族舞蹈和中华武术培训，还有交流、联谊性质的比赛活动等。 授课老师们倾心打造了适合不同程度同学的课程，使得每个同学都感到寓学于乐，学有所得。 ----------------> 4 Schools Showcase May 2013

Principals and TeachersCocktail CLTAWA Newsletter May 2013 On Wednesday the 10th of April the CLTAWA held an event to bring together Chinese teachers and their principals at The Boulevard in Floreat. The purpose of this gathering was to enable teachers and principals to network and get to know one another in a relaxed, laid back atmosphere with food and drinks. About forty principals and teachers participated and it was fantastic to see people from different schools exchanging information about their schools’ Chinese programs, sister school projects and the state of Chinese language learning in Western Australia. Thank you to all members who attended.
