2. What is New Media
Technology?
● Media today has been changed through the advancements in digital
technology which have changed the way we make and edit films
forever..
● The media used to be primarily based on analogue and print broadcast
models such as magazines and newspapers which have now began to die
out.
● This new media now relies on digital technologies as previously separate
media converges. The most prominent example of media convergence is
the internet whereby the technology for video and audio streaming is
rapidly evolving and has become much more accessible through it, to the
public overall.
● Most technologies described as "new media" are digital, often having
characteristics of being controlled, manipulated, networkable, dense,
compressible, and interactive. Some other examples include, websites,
computer multimedia, computer games, CD-ROMS, and DVDs.
3. Definitions of New Media
● Due to New Media technology, there has been a very clear shift from old
forms of media print, radio and television to the way it is now. In which the
all these forms of media can be accessed from one digital place but from
multiple different devices.
● New media came with new methods of communicating in the digital world
allow smaller groups of people to congregate online and share, sell and
swap goods and information. It also allows more people to have a voice in
their community and in the world in general through websites like in social
media. This makes it easier to get an audience as we are able to reach more
people than ever before.
● New media defeats time and space. New media holds a possibility of on-
demand access to content anytime, anywhere, on any digital device, as well
as interactive user feedback, creative participation and community
formation around the media content. This means we could access our blogs
from school or at home or anywhere we choose.
4. Definitions of New Media
● It is a mostly driven by user generated content which gives the audience
more power than they have had on the past. Social networking sites such as
Facebook, Twitter and YouTube allow us to portray a persona to the world
that we have created and may not be at all similar how you are in real life.
We represent ourselves as media students but also as a production company
on our blog.
● It is interactive, digital and collaborative. Another important promise of new
media is the "democratization" of the creation, publishing, distribution and
consumption of media content. Work can now be shared onto the internet.
We are sharing our work with you.
● It implies that the user obtains the material via desktop and laptop
computers, smartphones and tablets. Every company in the developed world
is involved with new media.
6. Advantages of Search
Engines
● Search engines are an effective way to scan the internet
for certain elements of film trailers and posters in our
genre
● We already had basic knowledge of search engines and
how to use them.
● Using a search engine meant we could look at a variety
of different resources.
● We were able to filter our searches meant we could find
what we needed more quickly and efficiently
● Our research was specific to our chosen genre.
Internet access is the basis of new media technology – it is what
allows the interactivity and collaboration to take place.
7. Use of Internet- Search
Engines Disadvantages
On rare occasions are searches were
not specific to what we wanted to
find. It would require us to enter
many different search terms and to
look at a lot of irrelevant material
before finding what we wanted.
There were occasions where we
had to draw a blank - for
example, if googling conventions
of trailers in the action genre,
there is a lot of information
about trailers and about action
films but not specifically about
action trailers.
New Media doesn’t have
the answers instantly –
little volume of
information can be a
problem at times.
8. Engines - Disadvantages Search
New media raises questions around ownership – who owns content?
What is ‘official’ content? Definitions are changing or at least being
debated thanks to new media.
Many of the
results we found
were user-
generated which
meant that
although
interesting, we
could not use as
formal research.
9. FreePlay Music
●The main issue we had with using
Free Play Music was that there was
almost too much choice to choose from.
●We found ourselves wasting a lot of
time trying to figure out which
soundtrack/s would work best once we
combined them with each other in
Garage Band.
●This site hosts literally thousands of
compositions and while there is quite
an advanced search function, selecting
music was still a very time-consuming
task.
10. YouTube
• YouTube helped us with
our research into looking
at other trailers within our
chosen genre.
• This was an extremely
useful website as we were
able to gain ideas which
we could then replicate in
our own trailer. Reading
comments underneath the
trailers was also useful as
it helped us to see what
appealed to audiences.
13. Storyboard Presentation
We explained what our trailer would
consist by using post-it notes which
helped to create an idea for us of what we
want to achieve but also help the
audience see what we were going to
include in our trailer as it shows the shots
we intend to use.
Our trailer was separated into three
different acts to enable the audience to
adapt their emotion to each act as they
varied as to what they included.
By drawing our intended
shots it helped us create
new ideas to see if we
could add anything or
replace it but also because
it gives us a more realistic
view of what we see and so
that way we can tell if an
idea would work more than
if it was typed up to
Blogger.
This helped to show how the
older methods are sometimes the
best way to achieve ideas rather
than using new media.
14. Once we had finished with old
media, we decided to move onto
new media to help us. We took
photos of each post-it in our
storyboard and uploaded them to
the computer where we used them
in FCPX to place into each shot
making sure we trim the length of
the photo and adding the audio in
as well giving us the best possible
understanding of what we want.
This helped us work out what we
needed to add and especially our
timings as this is something we
weren’t entirely sure of before.

16. Presenting Planning on
Blogger
This shows what new media can do and how it can help you to show
your work around the globe quickly and easily, should you wish to.
Shows us how
many views we
have had per
day, month
ands overall
time.
17. View other Work
By having other group’s blog posts on
the blog as well it enables us to work
together to gain inspiration from them
if we see something we like but more
importantly so they can comment on
our work and say what they feel
works well or may not work at all.
Blogging is a new but very effective tool enabling people to
comment on ideas and share work with each other across
an academic community, showing the effectiveness of new
media in extending traditional communication networks.
18. Combining Text and
Images
As we were able to
use images, videos
and texts we have
produced a creative
variety of work in
different formats.
Images along with text make
its easier for audiences to
follow our work and
progress, as they can see
images and videos of what
we have done and read
alongside it. This is effective
as most audiences don’t
expect or want to read large
amounts of text as they have
developed a ‘snacking’
behavior. By combining text
and images this has made it
more appealing to audiences,
as there is not too much
heavy content.
This sort of
technological
convergence is
associated with New
Media.
19. Work in Progress
● We used Blogger to show our progress over
this course.
● This was very handy as we were able to not
only look at our own work, but also that of
others in our group.
● Furthermore it allowed us to comment on our
group’s progress as a whole and as
individuals.
● Blogger has shown us how far we have
progressed as a group which is helpful in
giving us confidence as well as directing us on
a path which we can continue to progress.
Example of how collaborative creativity has progressed
through new media technology
20. Planned Use of
Social Media
● We planned on using new media such as social network sites as a way for
the audience to keep up to date with our plans. This would be a way for the
audience to get in touch with the main actors and ask any questions they
had.
● It also would have been used as a form of communication between the
audience themselves. This way they could discuss what they thought of our
trailer, poster, magazine cover and film.
● This would have been valuable as having an outside opinion of our work
could have informed us of anything that may need tweaking or completely
changing. On top of this, it would have also meant that we could have
learnt from things we were doing wrong had they been pointed out. This
would be extremely valuable as future products we produced would be
better as we could learn from any mistakes we may have made.
21. Label Filter
New media allows you to represent yourself as an
online identity and choose how you appear to others.
Allows for easy
searching of work
between group
members.
Acts as a library for
our online identity,
can find all of our
works easily.
23. Manipulating Images
New media technology allows us all to be creative and
artistic, whatever our traditional artistic skills may be like.
Using packages such as
Photoshop gives a significant
amount of control over images.
They can be brightened,
darkened, layers added to
achieve a multiple effect, text
and effects added, cropped,
resized and so on. While this is
a simple poster, the layers
palette shows how many
different adjustments have
been made to the original
image.
24. Photoshop
New media has helped to create
new kinds of creativity.
Manovich calls it “creativity of
selection.”
Learning what the tools were
and how they could be used
was one of our key challenges.
We also needed to learn to
think and plan in layers, as all
editing packages work
roughly in this way.
25. FCP - Combining Sound
and Image
When using music we
could use multiple
tracks to suit what was
going on in our trailer.
We could slow or speed
up the pace of trailer to
suit our ideas. We could
also layer music,
dialogue and sound
effects.
26. Balancing Sound
We were able to manipulate sound so that our use of dialogue
was louder than the use of non- diegetic music due to the
importance of dialogue in our trailer.
We were able to adjust this so that it was not noticeable, by
lowering the volume at the right times.
We were able to layer
diegetic and non-diegetic
sound, add audio effects
and layer it to achieve a
more textured trailer. This
shows the adjusting of the
montage music to exactly
match the action.
27. Reversibility
This is one of the biggest advantages of new media over old
media – nothing is permanent and the source material remains
the same.
28. Combining Technologies
28
New media is convergent – you can use different elements of it
together. In fact, this is an expectation rather than an option.
We were able to combine the use of
animated gifs, Photoshop and Final
Cut Pro X to create ratings cards,
idents and end credits. All the different
packages were compatible with each
other although there was constant
exporting from one package to
another. This is a good example of
how products can be used together.
29. Disadvantages of Digital
Technology
New media technology needs to be available to do
you any good.
Most of us only had access to the
expensive digital cameras in school.
This meant that we could not work
at home, were unable to catch up on
photography in our frees and were
dependent on booking out the
cameras to carry out extra work.
This put pressure on our time as we
had limited times when we could
carry out work.
30. Accessibility
New media is associated with accessibility and
democracy – not always the case. Developing technology
remains expensive for a while.
● The package was accessible to everyone in our media
group at limited times - we only used it within school.
● However it was only accessible to media students on the
Macs in our media classroom, there was no way of
getting it at home as it is expensive.
● There was a similar problem with Photoshop
32. This kind of outside
feedback is probably the
most useful part of new
media technology for us.
New media technology has
allowed this collaborative
creativity.
This was good because we could
comment on each other’s work and
yell other people in the group how
they could improve.
Anyone from anywhere in the
world could have accessed our
blog and had written comments
on our blog.
They could have been seen
from any location or
hardware when pressing
the view function.
Ability to Comment
33. Label filter allows us to see who
has done what on the blog.
Examiners and teachers can see
what work has been done by
what student and this means
they can evaluate and examine
our coursework well.
We know how many posts we
have done and we can self-
evaluate our work.
Enabled us to both scrutinise and collect our own work but also to
look at the work of others quickly and efficiently.
Use of Label Filter
34. Allows Choice of Format
- Slideshow
The sharing function makes it
easy for the whole group to work
separately but also together as we
placed a copy of the presentation
on Google docs so we could all
edit at the same time.
We have the opportunity to either
include a video in our
presentations, use simple text,
include images or all of them. This
format worked well for the
technology evaluation as it relied
on a lot of evidence from images,
which slideshows are particularly
good for.
35. Allows Choice of Format
- Edited Presentation
• Can combine images, text,
moving images etc.
• Freedom of discussion was
needed as value of
audience feedback was
debatable
• Ideas can be discussed
• Able to create a version
that can be fast-forwarded
so the whole video didn’t
have to be watched –
annotations and images
give a fair overview of
discussion content.
36. Allows Choice of Format
Talking Heads Interviews
• Allowed for individual
ideas to be heard before
group task
• Freedom of discussion was
needed as we all had
different experiences we
could then put together
• Ideas can be discussed and
explored in greater detail
• Being under close scrutiny
prompted new ideas
37. Allows Choice of Format –
Poster
Useful format for
creating an initial
visual impression that
can then be analysed.
Draws attention to
individual parts of
product rather than
getting sidetracked by
the whole while at the
same time providing a
useful summary of an
overall approach.
38. Allows choice of format –
YouTube Tutorial
Here we explained the success
of our products in combination
by advising others how to
construct a similarly successful
campaign. We were able to
explain how our products
created a brand identity and to
essential ‘talk through’ all our
ideas with a lot of visual
evidence to back this up.
Another useful aspect of this
was being able to add in
references to the whole
imagined campaign – part of
the new identities of new
media!
