EVALUATION OF USES OF NEW
MEDIA TECHNOLOGY
LACE PRODUCTIONS
Definitions of New Media
• Due to new media technology, there has been a shift in
print products, radio and television to the way it is now.
• New media is global. This means it can be accessed by
anyone from all around the world. Therefore, this makes
it easier to reach out to people and create an audience.
• It also defeats time and space. This is because we are able
to access the blog anytime anywhere, whether it be at
home or at school, on the computer or on our phones.
• It is mostly user driven content, meaning the audience has
more power than they used to. We are able to create a
persona on social networking sites, such as Facebook and
Twitter, whether it’s like the person or not. On the blog we
show ourselves as media students as well as a production
company.
What is New Media
Technology?
• Media technology is constantly
developing. Media now relies on
digital technologies as previously
separate media converges.
• For example, on the Grazia website
you can now do online shopping while
reading the magazine.
• The internet is rapidly expanding as
technology is becoming more and
more advanced.
• Media technology has now changed
the ways in which consumers behave,
as they can now do a variety of things
on the go on their phones.
RESEARCH
New media could be expected to make research interactive,
collaborative and shared with various groups.
Advantages of Search Engines
Search engines are the most valuable
source of information.
They are:
1. Quick
1. Lots of information
1. Relevant information which is
organized and precise.
1. Hundreds of links on any single topic.
Research was
interactive and
collaborative –
very new media
characteristics
The indexes of search engines are usually
vast, representing significant portions of
the Internet, offering a wide variety and
quantity of information resources.
IMDb
● We used movie websites including IMDB which allowed us
to find information. This information is reliable and it
would be hard to find elsewhere, as this is a film/TV only
website.
● It is free and easy to find and access which is an advantage
for ‘new’ media compared to old media forms.
Collecting knowledge
from varied sources
is one of the key
advantages of ‘new’
media.
YouTube
● We used YouTube to watch
various trailers in our genre.
● Thanks to the new media
nature of YouTube we were
able to clearly identify our
genre and from this we were
more informed when making
our trailer.
● YouTube also enabled us to
view multiple trailers and
help us to get a variety of
ideas from each genre to put
together when making our
own trailer.
● Comments on trailers allow for a picture of what
audiences want which is another kind of
collaborative culture.
Use of Internet-
Search Engine Disadvantages
• We had to scroll through a lot of content if we couldn’t find
what we wanted and this was very time consuming.
• There were a lot of irrelevant options that came up and son
we had to look for longer – this was again time consuming
and wasted time that we could have spent doing other
things.
• When creating the magazine cover it took longer for the images
we wanted as it had to be a ‘png’ for us to be able to use it on
Photoshop. For example, our magazine has jail bars over it and
it took time to find a png jail bar and also in the style that we
wanted. This was the same when finding the billing block for
our practice film posters.
Search Engines-
Disadvantages • When using a search engine it is
very easy to get lost looking at
something that isn’t relevant to
the task at hand.
• For example when looking at
trailers it isn’t always stated
which are the official trailer and
which are compilations made by a
fan. This could lead to us
researching what we thought to be
the trailer when in fact it wasn’t.
• This also meant that we were
watching multiple trailers, finding
it confusing which one to finally
use.
New media opens up the relationship between audiences and
institutions but this is not always positive – sometimes you
want a distinction between them.
Search Engines
- Disadvantages
● Can be hard to find what you
specifically want to find in the
search bar.
● For example, when we looked
for an image of drugging
someone’s tea, there were
many search results but most
of these simply showed cups of
tea and / or bottles of pills
which was not what we were
looking for. However we
refined our search terms, we
could not find exactly what we
wanted.
The sharing capacity of new media can become
overwhelming and disorganized.
Finding Music (Advantage)
The music is copyright-
free – this is the very
essence of new media,
finding sharable work like
this music.
● Thanks to new media it has been extremely easy to find a
large variety of copyright free music.
● Due to its copyright nature, it means that we can
manipulate the songs to fit in alongside our trailer, from
things such as changing the pitch and speed of the music.
Free Music and YouTube
Disadvantages
YOUTUBE
• YouTube was a bit of a problem for us, as we
couldn’t access it in school. This meant that if
we had time to in lessons to research trailers
or music then we couldn’t because the site was
blocked.
• We weren’t allowed to use any music from
YouTube as most of it was not copyright free.
Disadvantages of Free Music
• It’s a time consuming process to
listen to all the choices on offer
as there are hundreds of tracks
on each copyright free website.
• We would still have to download
the whole track, even if we only
wanted to use part of the track.
• Can be difficult to find specific
tracks – poor search system.
Reflects fact that much of collaborative and shared work on new
media platforms is unregulated as there is no official responsibility
for this to happen, and where work is free, there is not as much
incentive to please the customer and less fear of losing them.
PLANNING
New media could be expected to make planning
possible anytime, anywhere and easily shared and
updated.
Planned Use of Social Media
● We will be using social media as a way to
reach out to the on the go audience.
● Using social media sites it also means that
the audience can talk to the cast and
producers or even each other about the
film and comment on what they liked or
would change
● This gives us some information on what the
audience most liked and would help us
produce a better film in the future
● It also means that a third party can come in
and give their opinion, as they will have an
honest thought on how it was, they would
tell us what to improve on or is what small
things to alter.
Social media encapsulates the sharing and collaborative nature of
new media technology.

Presenting Planning on Blogger
Blogger not only gives us the opportunity to record our work to
see the progress we have made to our media knowledge and our
final A2 product, but it allows other people from all over the
world to see our work too.
On this map,
the countries
highlighted in
green are the
ones that have
seen our blog.
This graph
shows the
amount of
views we
have got
over 8
days.
We have had
589 page
views in
history to
date.
Blogging illustrates the global nature of new
media culture.
View Other Work
● On the blog we were able to view other people’s work, as it
was open to everyone. There were various other media
production groups in our school which were on the same
blog homepage.
● This allowed us to give feedback on their work as an external
person who doesn’t know the storyline or its concept and to
receive feedback ourselves.
Accessibility
● This blog can be seen by everyone
as long as they entre with the web
link, everyone can edit and write in
it
● We can access it at home, school
and on different devices. However
can’t be accessed abroad
● It is organized in chronological
order under titles so it is easy to
refer back to certain aspects
● We used labels so we could just
look at one person’s work, and
know what each person done.
Label Filter
• This acted as a library for
our online identity, where
we can establish who
created each post.
• It also enabled us to find
our work more easily,
and search for each
others posts.
New media allows you to represent yourself as an online
identity and chose how you appear to others.
Using Different Media - Images
● We combined text and
images together in or
research.
● This not only made the
presentation of our work
more attractive, but also
make the audience relate
what we are talking
about to the image.
● We often used bullet
points to separate the
writing and make it
easier to read.
Using Different Media- Hyperlinks
• We used hyperlinks in our
research so that the
audience are able to watch
the video themselves which
we are referring to.
• This puts our work into
context and enables the
audience to have greater
understanding about what
we are talking about.
Using Different Media
- Videos and Presentations
New media technology enables us to use a range of
presentational formats to present the same piece of work.
This encourages and promotes cross-media convergence.
● We used videos to put
forward our ideas about
our initial thoughts for
our trailer.
● This allows us to reflect
on our first ideas and
compare what has
changed/what needs to
be changed.
● This also shows how we
used new technology to
plan our trailer.
Storyboarding
● We storyboarded our ideas,
including all the shots we had in
mind.
● We attempted to include all the
dialogue and music which we
thought would be effective in
our trailer.
● This was so we had an idea of
what we was working towards.
● This is considered ‘old’ media – sometimes we didn't use new
media technology as we didn't feel it was of valuable to us.
There was no new media option that we felt could equal the
creativity of the drawn storyboard to present our ideas.
Schumm points out that only the technologically competent can
benefit from the new media culture. Where there are issues using the
technology, using old media may in fact be more beneficial and
achieve better effects.
Animatic ● We used Final Cut Express to
make a more animated version
of our storyboard was a key
use of new media for planning.
● This made our planning more
exact and accurate when
developing our ideas.
● We were able to add sound,
music, effects and transitions
to our drawn images and get a
much better sense of pace and
timing.
● This also gave us an idea of
how our shots would work
with the sound elements
added.
CONSTRUCTION
New media could be expected to make construction more
collaborative and more efficient
An advantage to Final Cut Express is that there are a range
of tools which can enhance the work if they are used
effectively, such as the tool palette which allows the footage
to be manipulated.

Manipulating Material
Reversibility is a key feature of new media technology.
Few decisions are permanent and cannot be undone,
leading to more freedom to experiment.
The original footage is stored within the browser, so if we made
a mistake, we can easily come back to this original. This allows
us to be more adventurous in our creative decision making.
You are able to add as many layers as you need meaning that
sound and images can overlap, which is especially useful for
non-diegetic music and diegetic at the same time.
Effects and Transitions
This is a good example of the
“creativity of selection”
associated with new media.
For our piece we used various effects and
transitions that wouldn’t have been possible had it
not been for new media.
A good example is use of
the combat lighting state
and a gaussian blur to
create the sequences
from the past. This would
not have been possible
without digital editing.
Combining and Manipulating
Sound
It is useful to have
layers as it allows
different sound
effects at once.
However this
means you need to
balance out the
diegetic and non-
diegetic music
volume. We
decided it would be
best to have the
voiceover to be the
loudest as that is
what the audience
need to be listening
to.
The pen tool allowed us to pin out
points of the sound that either needed to
be enhanced or softened without
changing the rest of the track.
Disadvantages:-
Pre-Packaged Solutions
Is new media making us lazy? As we have pre-packaged solutions,
there is less need to be creative in making original effects or
transitions.
The choices on Final Cut Pro are limited i.e. transitions and
effects so we have to settle for what there is to offer, even if
the transition or effect we imagined is different to what
actually is on offer.
Accessibility New media is associated with
democracy and availability to all –
but this is not always the case.
Although various
softwares are extremely
accessible to media
students there is also a lot
of software that will be
only accessible to those
students who can afford
to buy them or are
prepared to download
them illegally.
Although there is a lot of
free software available to
all, the free versions of
the kinds of editing
software we need are not
comparable in quality.
Various softwares
such as Photoshop
require a money
investment which not
everybody will have to
hand, therefore this
technology is
unavailable to them.
Photoshop
Manipulating Images
Manovich associates new
media technology with a
“creativity of selection”.
For our coursework we had to
manipulate various images to
create print products. Photoshop
allowed us to extract two different
images from their backgrounds,
superimpose on a new
background, resize them and add
various effects.
Thanks to Photoshop we were able
to manipulate images both in size
and effects enabling us to create
authentic editions of posters and
magazine covers.
Manipulating Images
Photoshop enabled us to
significantly change our
base images. We were
able to extract key parts
of the image, resize, add
in new backgrounds and
text layers and add
effects, creating
composite images that
have been been built up
using careful layers.
New media requires
you to think in very
specific ways -
working in layers is a
key one.
Disadvantages- Photoshop
New media is often time consuming, especially
where experience is limited and you are novice at
using it.
There are also various limitations to the extent of tools we could use,
for example when making our billing block we had to use fonts that
were designed already, we didn’t have the ability to create our own
fonts.
EVALUATION
New media could be expected to make evaluation more
widespread and more frequent.
Use of Blogger
New media is particularly well suited to making the process of
evaluation more ongoing and reflective rather than summative; we
would argue that we have been evaluating throughout and many of
our research and planning posts are in fact evaluative.
As we discussed for research and
planning, it is the interactive,
collaborative nature of Blogger
that makes such a useful site for
storing our feedback.
We can view each other’s work and
keep returning to our previous
posts so that we’ve been able to
evaluate the whole process rather
than only the finished product.
Feedback
New media was the absolute key to receiving feedback on our
coursework. We were able to get feedback from a professional
company through a combination of Dropbox and email, and
also our teacher was able to interactively post comments on
our pieces as a means of constructive criticism.
This is the true value of new media technology – being able to work
with people in a professional community without needing direct
contact.
Use of Slideshow Technology
An advantage of Blogger is its use of a multimedia format. The
slideshow was a good choice for our evaluation because we were able
to work separately but collaboratively and we needed to present a lot
of images to support what we were saying.
Use of TV Formats – Talking Heads
This enables us to present
both criticisms and
defences of our uses of new
media technology in a
more detailed and
sustained way, and also
allowed us to engage more
with some of the bigger
concepts such as
democracy, globalisation,
collaboration etc. which
aren’t so easily illustrated
in this slideshow format
and require a more
thorough approach.
Use of Edited Presentations
Allowed us to show
how we engaged as a
group, which is useful
when submitting a
group evaluation.
Made it easier to
include an element of
debate and to both
challenge and defend
ourselves.
We were able to annotate and illustrate these presentations for easier
viewing – another example of a multimedia format.
Use of Contact Sheets and Notes
This contact sheet was a good choice for format for evaluating genre
and form because it was such an instant visual representation of
many of our mise-en-scene choices. It was made on Photoshop and
uploaded to Blogger
Use of YouTube Tutorial
This format allowed us to
imagine a whole film
promotion from beginning
to end.
The tutorial format meant
we were explaining what we
felt we had done well with
our products while
pretending to give others
advice.
We were able to explain how
our products worked
together in the context of
the whole campaign we had
thought out, and to make
this clear through voice and
accompanying visuals.
Use of FCE to Compare Products
We were able to use Final Cut to
create short videos of how our
products developed over time. For
the print products, this involved
cross-dissolving jpegs of each
product at various stages into the
next so we could see the changes.
For our trailer, we were able to
create a video playing different cuts
side by side so that we could see what
had developed.
This was particularly useful when
remembering key audience feedback
but was generally a great tool for
highlighting our progress and for
reminding ourselves of the different
stages we had been through.
Benefits of Multimedia Format
New media is very associated
with a multimedia format and
technological convergence.
This has benefitted our
evaluation because we have
been able to use a full range of
exploratory techniques, from
full on discussions to the
compression needed for a
PowerPoint slide, with lots of
visual support.

  • 2. Definitions of New Media • Due to new media technology, there has been a shift in print products, radio and television to the way it is now. • New media is global. This means it can be accessed by anyone from all around the world. Therefore, this makes it easier to reach out to people and create an audience. • It also defeats time and space. This is because we are able to access the blog anytime anywhere, whether it be at home or at school, on the computer or on our phones. • It is mostly user driven content, meaning the audience has more power than they used to. We are able to create a persona on social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, whether it’s like the person or not. On the blog we show ourselves as media students as well as a production company.
  • 3. What is New Media Technology? • Media technology is constantly developing. Media now relies on digital technologies as previously separate media converges. • For example, on the Grazia website you can now do online shopping while reading the magazine. • The internet is rapidly expanding as technology is becoming more and more advanced. • Media technology has now changed the ways in which consumers behave, as they can now do a variety of things on the go on their phones.
  • 4. RESEARCH New media could be expected to make research interactive, collaborative and shared with various groups.
  • 5. Advantages of Search Engines Search engines are the most valuable source of information. They are: 1. Quick 1. Lots of information 1. Relevant information which is organized and precise. 1. Hundreds of links on any single topic. Research was interactive and collaborative – very new media characteristics The indexes of search engines are usually vast, representing significant portions of the Internet, offering a wide variety and quantity of information resources.
  • 6. IMDb ● We used movie websites including IMDB which allowed us to find information. This information is reliable and it would be hard to find elsewhere, as this is a film/TV only website. ● It is free and easy to find and access which is an advantage for ‘new’ media compared to old media forms. Collecting knowledge from varied sources is one of the key advantages of ‘new’ media.

YouTube ● We used YouTube to watch various trailers in our genre. ● Thanks to the new media nature of YouTube we were able to clearly identify our genre and from this we were more informed when making our trailer. ● YouTube also enabled us to view multiple trailers and help us to get a variety of ideas from each genre to put together when making our own trailer. ● Comments on trailers allow for a picture of what audiences want which is another kind of collaborative culture.

Use of Internet- Search Engine Disadvantages • We had to scroll through a lot of content if we couldn’t find what we wanted and this was very time consuming. • There were a lot of irrelevant options that came up and son we had to look for longer – this was again time consuming and wasted time that we could have spent doing other things. • When creating the magazine cover it took longer for the images we wanted as it had to be a ‘png’ for us to be able to use it on Photoshop. For example, our magazine has jail bars over it and it took time to find a png jail bar and also in the style that we wanted. This was the same when finding the billing block for our practice film posters.

Search Engines- Disadvantages • When using a search engine it is very easy to get lost looking at something that isn’t relevant to the task at hand. • For example when looking at trailers it isn’t always stated which are the official trailer and which are compilations made by a fan. This could lead to us researching what we thought to be the trailer when in fact it wasn’t. • This also meant that we were watching multiple trailers, finding it confusing which one to finally use. New media opens up the relationship between audiences and institutions but this is not always positive – sometimes you want a distinction between them.

Search Engines - Disadvantages ● Can be hard to find what you specifically want to find in the search bar. ● For example, when we looked for an image of drugging someone’s tea, there were many search results but most of these simply showed cups of tea and / or bottles of pills which was not what we were looking for. However we refined our search terms, we could not find exactly what we wanted. The sharing capacity of new media can become overwhelming and disorganized.

Finding Music (Advantage) The music is copyright- free – this is the very essence of new media, finding sharable work like this music. ● Thanks to new media it has been extremely easy to find a large variety of copyright free music. ● Due to its copyright nature, it means that we can manipulate the songs to fit in alongside our trailer, from things such as changing the pitch and speed of the music.
  • 12. Free Music and YouTube Disadvantages YOUTUBE • YouTube was a bit of a problem for us, as we couldn’t access it in school. This meant that if we had time to in lessons to research trailers or music then we couldn’t because the site was blocked. • We weren’t allowed to use any music from YouTube as most of it was not copyright free.
  • 13. Disadvantages of Free Music • It’s a time consuming process to listen to all the choices on offer as there are hundreds of tracks on each copyright free website. • We would still have to download the whole track, even if we only wanted to use part of the track. • Can be difficult to find specific tracks – poor search system. Reflects fact that much of collaborative and shared work on new media platforms is unregulated as there is no official responsibility for this to happen, and where work is free, there is not as much incentive to please the customer and less fear of losing them.
  • 14. PLANNING New media could be expected to make planning possible anytime, anywhere and easily shared and updated.
  • 15. Planned Use of Social Media ● We will be using social media as a way to reach out to the on the go audience. ● Using social media sites it also means that the audience can talk to the cast and producers or even each other about the film and comment on what they liked or would change ● This gives us some information on what the audience most liked and would help us produce a better film in the future ● It also means that a third party can come in and give their opinion, as they will have an honest thought on how it was, they would tell us what to improve on or is what small things to alter. Presenting Planning on Blogger Blogger not only gives us the opportunity to record our work to see the progress we have made to our media knowledge and our final A2 product, but it allows other people from all over the world to see our work too. On this map, the countries highlighted in green are the ones that have seen our blog. This graph shows the amount of views we have got over 8 days. We have had 589 page views in history to date. Blogging illustrates the global nature of new media culture.
  • 17. View Other Work ● On the blog we were able to view other people’s work, as it was open to everyone. There were various other media production groups in our school which were on the same blog homepage. ● This allowed us to give feedback on their work as an external person who doesn’t know the storyline or its concept and to receive feedback ourselves.
  • 18. Accessibility ● This blog can be seen by everyone as long as they entre with the web link, everyone can edit and write in it ● We can access it at home, school and on different devices. However can’t be accessed abroad ● It is organized in chronological order under titles so it is easy to refer back to certain aspects ● We used labels so we could just look at one person’s work, and know what each person done.

Label Filter • This acted as a library for our online identity, where we can establish who created each post. • It also enabled us to find our work more easily, and search for each others posts. New media allows you to represent yourself as an online identity and chose how you appear to others.
  • 20. Using Different Media - Images ● We combined text and images together in or research. ● This not only made the presentation of our work more attractive, but also make the audience relate what we are talking about to the image. ● We often used bullet points to separate the writing and make it easier to read.
  • 21. Using Different Media- Hyperlinks • We used hyperlinks in our research so that the audience are able to watch the video themselves which we are referring to. • This puts our work into context and enables the audience to have greater understanding about what we are talking about.
  • 22. Using Different Media - Videos and Presentations New media technology enables us to use a range of presentational formats to present the same piece of work. This encourages and promotes cross-media convergence. ● We used videos to put forward our ideas about our initial thoughts for our trailer. ● This allows us to reflect on our first ideas and compare what has changed/what needs to be changed. ● This also shows how we used new technology to plan our trailer.

Storyboarding ● We storyboarded our ideas, including all the shots we had in mind. ● We attempted to include all the dialogue and music which we thought would be effective in our trailer. ● This was so we had an idea of what we was working towards. ● This is considered ‘old’ media – sometimes we didn't use new media technology as we didn't feel it was of valuable to us. There was no new media option that we felt could equal the creativity of the drawn storyboard to present our ideas. Schumm points out that only the technologically competent can benefit from the new media culture. Where there are issues using the technology, using old media may in fact be more beneficial and achieve better effects.

Animatic ● We used Final Cut Express to make a more animated version of our storyboard was a key use of new media for planning. ● This made our planning more exact and accurate when developing our ideas. ● We were able to add sound, music, effects and transitions to our drawn images and get a much better sense of pace and timing. ● This also gave us an idea of how our shots would work with the sound elements added.
  • 25. CONSTRUCTION New media could be expected to make construction more collaborative and more efficient
  • 26. An advantage to Final Cut Express is that there are a range of tools which can enhance the work if they are used effectively, such as the tool palette which allows the footage to be manipulated. Final Cut Pro - Tools
  • 27. Manipulating Material Reversibility is a key feature of new media technology. Few decisions are permanent and cannot be undone, leading to more freedom to experiment. The original footage is stored within the browser, so if we made a mistake, we can easily come back to this original. This allows us to be more adventurous in our creative decision making. You are able to add as many layers as you need meaning that sound and images can overlap, which is especially useful for non-diegetic music and diegetic at the same time.
  • 28. Effects and Transitions This is a good example of the “creativity of selection” associated with new media. For our piece we used various effects and transitions that wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for new media. A good example is use of the combat lighting state and a gaussian blur to create the sequences from the past. This would not have been possible without digital editing.
  • 29. Combining and Manipulating Sound It is useful to have layers as it allows different sound effects at once. However this means you need to balance out the diegetic and non- diegetic music volume. We decided it would be best to have the voiceover to be the loudest as that is what the audience need to be listening to. The pen tool allowed us to pin out points of the sound that either needed to be enhanced or softened without changing the rest of the track.
  • 30. Disadvantages:- Pre-Packaged Solutions Is new media making us lazy? As we have pre-packaged solutions, there is less need to be creative in making original effects or transitions. The choices on Final Cut Pro are limited i.e. transitions and effects so we have to settle for what there is to offer, even if the transition or effect we imagined is different to what actually is on offer.
  • 31. Accessibility New media is associated with democracy and availability to all – but this is not always the case. Although various softwares are extremely accessible to media students there is also a lot of software that will be only accessible to those students who can afford to buy them or are prepared to download them illegally. Although there is a lot of free software available to all, the free versions of the kinds of editing software we need are not comparable in quality. Various softwares such as Photoshop require a money investment which not everybody will have to hand, therefore this technology is unavailable to them.
  • 33. Manipulating Images Manovich associates new media technology with a “creativity of selection”. For our coursework we had to manipulate various images to create print products. Photoshop allowed us to extract two different images from their backgrounds, superimpose on a new background, resize them and add various effects. Thanks to Photoshop we were able to manipulate images both in size and effects enabling us to create authentic editions of posters and magazine covers.
  • 34. Manipulating Images Photoshop enabled us to significantly change our base images. We were able to extract key parts of the image, resize, add in new backgrounds and text layers and add effects, creating composite images that have been been built up using careful layers. New media requires you to think in very specific ways - working in layers is a key one.
  • 35. Disadvantages- Photoshop New media is often time consuming, especially where experience is limited and you are novice at using it. There are also various limitations to the extent of tools we could use, for example when making our billing block we had to use fonts that were designed already, we didn’t have the ability to create our own fonts.
  • 36. EVALUATION New media could be expected to make evaluation more widespread and more frequent.
  • 37. Use of Blogger New media is particularly well suited to making the process of evaluation more ongoing and reflective rather than summative; we would argue that we have been evaluating throughout and many of our research and planning posts are in fact evaluative. As we discussed for research and planning, it is the interactive, collaborative nature of Blogger that makes such a useful site for storing our feedback. We can view each other’s work and keep returning to our previous posts so that we’ve been able to evaluate the whole process rather than only the finished product.
  • 38. Feedback New media was the absolute key to receiving feedback on our coursework. We were able to get feedback from a professional company through a combination of Dropbox and email, and also our teacher was able to interactively post comments on our pieces as a means of constructive criticism. This is the true value of new media technology – being able to work with people in a professional community without needing direct contact.
  • 39. Use of Slideshow Technology An advantage of Blogger is its use of a multimedia format. The slideshow was a good choice for our evaluation because we were able to work separately but collaboratively and we needed to present a lot of images to support what we were saying.
  • 40. Use of TV Formats – Talking Heads This enables us to present both criticisms and defences of our uses of new media technology in a more detailed and sustained way, and also allowed us to engage more with some of the bigger concepts such as democracy, globalisation, collaboration etc. which aren’t so easily illustrated in this slideshow format and require a more thorough approach.
  • 41. Use of Edited Presentations Allowed us to show how we engaged as a group, which is useful when submitting a group evaluation. Made it easier to include an element of debate and to both challenge and defend ourselves. We were able to annotate and illustrate these presentations for easier viewing – another example of a multimedia format.
  • 42. Use of Contact Sheets and Notes This contact sheet was a good choice for format for evaluating genre and form because it was such an instant visual representation of many of our mise-en-scene choices. It was made on Photoshop and uploaded to Blogger
  • 43. Use of YouTube Tutorial This format allowed us to imagine a whole film promotion from beginning to end. The tutorial format meant we were explaining what we felt we had done well with our products while pretending to give others advice. We were able to explain how our products worked together in the context of the whole campaign we had thought out, and to make this clear through voice and accompanying visuals.
  • 44. Use of FCE to Compare Products We were able to use Final Cut to create short videos of how our products developed over time. For the print products, this involved cross-dissolving jpegs of each product at various stages into the next so we could see the changes. For our trailer, we were able to create a video playing different cuts side by side so that we could see what had developed. This was particularly useful when remembering key audience feedback but was generally a great tool for highlighting our progress and for reminding ourselves of the different stages we had been through.
  • 45. Benefits of Multimedia Format New media is very associated with a multimedia format and technological convergence. This has benefitted our evaluation because we have been able to use a full range of exploratory techniques, from full on discussions to the compression needed for a PowerPoint slide, with lots of visual support.
