Ethnographic Interview on Sports in American Culture
Andrew is a third year chemical engineering student at the University of Louisville. He grew up in
Hodgenville, KY. Which is a small town just south east of Elizabethtown. He lives in an apartment
with one other student also attending the University of Louisville and myself. This apartment is
where the interview took place.
The topic that I chose for this ethnographic interview was sports in American culture. Sports are
popular in America, and are a big part of the culture in America. I would say most people in
America have played sports, whether they played as kids, in high school, at the collegiate level, or
even professional. A great deal of people also enjoy watching sporting events. The following were
the questions asked during the interview. How have sports affected your life? Why do you think
sports are so popular in America's culture? How are sports a part of the culture in America? What do
you think about the amount of money spent on spectator sports?
I started off the interview by asking how sports have affected his life. Sports are an important part of
most American's lives, including Andrews. Andrew is a big sports fan and played soccer on his high
school team. "Sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Starting from when
my dad first taught me how to throw, kick and hit a ball." "It was a way for me to bond with my
family and friends as I was growing up." From this interview I learned that athletics/sports were a

Sports As An Element Of Culture
1.1 Introduction Sports have different meanings for different people and across societies (Laker
2001:4). The way one engages in sports is influenced by the cultural or ethnic group to which one
belongs (Sever 2005:4). Even though the rules of sport may stay constant, meanings diverge and are
varied (Besnier and Brownell 2012). Sports serves as one of the most contested and celebrated
institutions in our society (Appleby and Foster 2013:1). As a result, it will be impossible to fully
understand contemporary society without acknowledging the place of sports (Jarvie 2006:2). The
body transformed from being a biological entity to a cultural body since the 1980s to help
understand the complexities of the body in sports (Besnier and Brownell ... Show more content on

Sport is conventionally associated with masculinity and defined as a masculine domain (Server 2005
and Appleby and Foster 2013:14). The practice of sport is related to a number of assumptions about
leisure and work, which are often lived differently by men and women (Sever 2005:4). Scholars
have discovered that, sports like gymnastics, dance, and figure skating mostly associated with
beauty and grace are mostly regarded as feminine (Koivula 2001). For example, the use of
attractive, scantily clad young women acting as 'card girls' (Oates, 1987) making gender a very
significant factor in the research process through the complicities and collusions of masculinity
(Connell, 1995). Conversely, sports like football and boxing with elements of violence, aggression
and physical contact are regarded as masculine (Koivula 2001). These philosophies are immersed in
social ideas which are influenced by what the society considers should be done (Appleby and Foster
2013:14). Such persistent beliefs limit opportunities for sport participation for both male and female
athletes (Coakley 2009). Sports is a unique product of social reality and it is the only activity that
combines the serious with the frivolous, playfulness with intensity, and the ideological with the
structural (Frey and Eitzen 1991:504). Sports related capacities of athletes are affected by a complex
interplay among genetic contributions, social climates, and physical environments.

Brazil Sports
Brazil is located on the eastern part of South America has the fifth largest population of about 200
million people (Stambulova & Ryba, 2013, p. 64). It's the only Portuguese speaking country in Latin
America and the Roman Catholic Church is the national religion followed. The country's Life
expectancy is about 69 ; with the culture being influenced by Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Japan
and Arab immigrants; allowing the country to have a diverse cultural history. Brazil has a very
successful economy as well as stability in there government (Stambulova & Ryba, 2013, p. 64).

(Costa, E. F., 2002, p. 63). Currently in Brazil, there has been a shift in the economy; poverty levels
and the cost of living are rising, as well as transportation costs due to the country's elaborate
spending and plans for funding for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics (Ghosh, 2013). Out
cries from the citizen's state that the Government of Brazil isn't spending its money anymore on the
areas that need it the most, but instead they focus on funding sports (Ghosh, 2013). History Over the
years, Brazil has undergone some major changes in its country from its economy, to its government,
the country's native language, the population (in terms of culture and size), the social and
environmental problems, etc.; but more importantly its independence from Portugal on September 7,
1822. Brazil is the only Portuguese–speaking nation in South America and about three–quarters of
all Brazilians belong to the Roman Catholic Church; others are either members of traditional
Protestant denominations, evangelical movements, or practices derived from African religions.
During the 20th century, Brazil experienced rapid urban growth; as 81% of the country's total
population was living in urban areas. This growth did aid to its overall economic development but it
also created several problems such as: social, security, environmental, and political for many cities
("Brazil: History", 2011). Majority of the country's population have lived in the south–central area,

Sports in Pop Culture
Abstract
Gender, race, and competitiveness in youth sports have been controversial beginning on the very
first day of sports broadening its boundaries (Granderson, 2012). From Brent Barry to Kristy
Yamaguchi to Tiger Woods, one of the youngest golf champions ever, sports has always been "one
way." Different people of different backgrounds, ethnic groups, and social classes, and ages have
shown that he or she can do anything if they have the will to accomplish the task (Granderson,
2012). Tiger Woods won 71 PGA Tours, Kristy Yamaguchi excelled in figure skating and Brent
Barry showed that White men can jump when he won the 1996 slam dunk contest. Race, gender, and
youth have nothing to do with ability and skill in sports (Granderson, ... Show more content on

A clear example of poor sportsmanship is in the recent highlight of the (bounty program) with the
New Orleans Saints. According to the New York Times, players collected bonuses if they enable the
opposing team member to return to the game because of hard hits or injuries (Battista, 2012). This
team of highly paid athletes acted irresponsibly, caused bodily harm to the other players, and
brought shame upon the franchise.
The United States appears to be a nation obsessed with sports, more than fans based on the virtual
addition to sports statistics (Petracca & Sorapure, 2007). Most fans are hook on statistic; this is how
they measure the achievements of the most likeable athletes and team. This may be how fans hold
on to memories of never to repeated athletes performance and without a doubt to find more evidence
of Americans preoccupation with sports (Petracca & Sorapure, 2007). For Instance; the mass media

Sports Culture: Article Analysis
In this article Michael Serazio, an associate professor in the department of communications at
Boston College informs that Sports culture has become the new religion, but he questions why
people are so faithful. Serazio demonstrates that in our culture, humans have created a new meaning
and devotion to sports. Stating that totems are an obvious and noticeable form that a society
interpreters to be different and shows its personality or beliefs. By creating such logos with distinct
characteristics, patterns, and colors to form a physical illustration of sports teams it gives their
supporters a recognizable sense of "identity and unity". Much like religion, our sports teams are
diminishing in faith. Serazio questions exactly what icons will continually

Lacrosse: A Popular Culture Sport
Lacrosse is a sport that is consisted with a lacrosse stick, both genders can play (on their own team),
and it has grown so much lately. Lacrosse at first was a men's sport, but transposed soon after to
acquiesce both genders to play. Lacrosse is also one of the oldest sports created. Lacrosse, originally
named Baggataway, originated from the Native Americans back in the 15th century and was played
with a wooden stick with a small net on top, it was played up throughout Canada, but was really
popular around the Great Lakes, Mid–Atlantic Seaboard, and the South of the U.S. Tribes such as
the Iroquois, Huron, Algonquin and even more played lacrosse. Lacrosse was at first a very cultural

Lacrosse wasn't really well known by the Popular Culture, but as soon as it started to spread it is no
longer a "folk culture sport" it is a popular culture sport. All sports soon became a popular culture
throughout time as they grow and leave their originated state. Such as football and soccer, they were
at first Folk Culture games, but now they are Popular Culture games. Lacrosse was called
Baggataway until the early 17th Century by the Europeans. French Jesuit missionaries thought that
the stick resembled the staff that the Bishops use to walk around which in French is named La
Crosse and that is when they thought it would be "proper" to named Baggataway Lacrosse. Popular
Culture has affected a lot of Folk Culture traditions, as for taking their styles of the games and the
traditions they use. Without Folk Culture we wouldn't have a lot of the resources that we do
nowadays. From Lacrosse being called another name and now having certain rules that were not
involved in the original state to it being an almost completely different sport now. It amazes a good
quality of people nowadays to have see something come from their originated state to its modified

How Do Sports And Clothing Affect American Culture
BACKGROUND PAPER
ON
AESTHETICS AND RECREATION
1. Did you know that aesthetics and recreation plays a tremendous role in the American way of life?
In particular, sports and clothing affects our interests as citizens and this paper will enlighten you on
some of the reasons why. This paper will cover sports and clothing as how they relate to and how
they affects the American Culture. To get an understanding as to how the two affect America, let us
start with the sports.
2. What do you consider the major sports in America? Wikipedia defined sports as an activity
involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or
others for entertainment. Sports played an important role on American Culture. The sporting

Nfl Influence On Traditional Sports Culture
Traditionally, sports culture has always been thought of as a "male arena," a strong, masculine world
ruled by men, pumped up with violence. The National Football League (NFL) and its players
embody this resemblance. Despite the no–politics rule, the NFL use flyovers of military aircraft
before games, promoting the American military. Military is also common at MLB games. For
example, President George W. Bush threw out the first pitch while Zirin attended the Washington
Nationals game. This proves that these kinds of displays are political. According to Zirin, this kinds
of acts are unnoticed because of how ideology functions: it "naturalizes" a set of ideas "that deflect
attention away from other realities." In this case, it establishes militaristic

Disadvantages Of Athletic Participation
Review of Related Literature The focus of this chapter of related literature regarding an examination
of the effects of athletic participation on student athletes. The discussion of this examination will be
presented in the following order: (1) disadvantages and advantages of parental involvement; (2)
disadvantages of athletic participation and (3) benefits of athletic participation. Disadvantages and
Advantages of Parental Involvement There are several research studies that support the
disadvantages and advantages of parental involvement in athletic participation. According to
Hellstedt (1990), parents may create high levels of pressure, while under–involved parents do not
provide enough support to facilitate a child's desire to participate. But those parents who are
moderately involved seem to provide just the right balance not only to facilitate enjoyment, but also
to challenge the child to continue to grow and develop his/her skills (Hellstedt, 1990). Without
support, especially financial and emotional, it would be very difficult for a child to be able to
participate. However, the pressure felt from the parent who is over–involved could easily take out all
the enjoyment of playing sports (Hellstedt, 1990). According to Donna Merkel (2013), the
challenges faced by adults who are involved in youth sports, from parents, to coaches, to sports
medicine providers, are multiple, complex, and varied across ethnic cultures, gender, communities,
and socioeconomic levels. It

Art And Sports In American Culture
How should art and sports contribute to the "good life" of an American citizen? How should we
value art and sports in our culture? What is the real purpose of arts and physical education? How
does art and sports take part in my culture? How should we, as a culture value sports and art? We
should value art and sport more as part of our culture. Dr. Dana Gioia in his 2007 Commencement
address to Stanford University states, "The role of the culture, however, must go beyond economics.
It is not focused on the price of things, but on their value. And, above all, culture should tell us what
is beyond pride, including what does not belong in the market. A culture should also provide some
cogent view of the good life beyond mass accumulation." " There is a difference between cost and
value. 2 people could have the same object with the same cost but could value that object differently.
For example, one person could purchase a painting for $500, another person could receive that same
painting with the same cost from a close relative. The person that paid $500 would value it as an
expensive item, and the person who received the painting from a close relative would value it as
something they would cherish because it was given to them as a gift. Same thing with sports,
someone could be in a seeing that it is something that they take pride in and another person could
take participate in a sport because their parents did it or their parents want them to do it. Two people

Gender Roles In Sports Culture
In continuation, sports culture is a male dominant environment. The athletes that are past of sports
teams can be viewed as strong, masculine and talented. Thus, classing them into typical male gender
roles (Aphrodite Pristess, 2014). For this section I chose to take the first athlete to come out as gay
and a more recent athlete coming out to compare their experiences. In 1978 Glenn Burke became
the first openly gay man in sports culture. Regardless of his baseball talents he was quickly traded to
a different team (Kaplan, 2015). When Burke came out acceptance was not an option. The sports
organizations and teams were uncomfortable with his sexual orientation. In an interview, Burke
admitted that the team he was playing for at the time offered ... Show more content on

Once again, the topic of religion and how it plays a role can be related to the sexual education
curriculum. Based on the type of school as student attends, they will learn different things about sex
and sexuality. Until recently, catholic schools in Ontario used abstinence based curriculum to teach
students about sex. If there was discussion about intercourse it was between a heterosexual husband
and wife (Stonefish & Lafrenier, 2015). To me this seems extremely unrealistic to be teaching
children abstinence when most, if not all of them are aware of sexual activities and or participate in
them. The policies that surrounded the curriculum did not allow any room for teachers to introduce
the larger picture of sexuality. The current curriculum allows students to learn about self–expression
and healthy relationships (Stonefish &Lafrenier, 2015). In my opinion, this is the most important
thing to teach children about themselves, what their personal boundaries are and that there is no
normal it is simply an illusion that was created from past values and beliefs. An example of this is
"religious leaders, who have long been considered a source of counsel and support for many family
issues, have been revealed as critically significant factors in determining the cause for depression in
sexual minority youth" (Stonefish & Lafrenier, 2015). This shows that the past

The Impact Of Nascar On American Sports Culture And Socio...
The impact of NASCAR in the American sports culture and socio–economic activities
National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) is an imagined community that
promoted nationalism in the US. Anderson Benedict categorically presented insightful information
about the imagined communities through his numerous pieces of writing. He noted that the
imagined communities promoted social integration, sporting activities among the US people,
economic growth and cultural practices that include a new way of life (Goldberg 1). In particular,
NASCAR helped in promoting national unity and change in the cultural practices including a way of
life through sports and related activities. NASCAR community presents a great impact on the
American sports culture and socio–economic activities.
NASCAR community is made up of sports personalities. The community values sports and
champions sporting activities with the aim of fostering peace and unity (Batchelor 226). They have
always achieved significant gains with the sporting initiatives concerning the transformation of the
way of life of the southern people including other parts of the nation. Likewise, NASCAR is a
sporting community that coordinates multiple auto–racing sporting events. The community started

Is Sport An Important Part Of Nz Culture?
Is sport an important part of nz culture?
New Zealand has a very unique and a dynamic culture. Our culture is mixed and each one has its
importance in our society. I think sports has played a part in our identity, but it is our culture that
make us who we are.
Maori culture is indigenous, and in sports we can incorporate aspects of Maori language and
movements, such as, the He tama tu tama activity. I have also seen children playing the Maori
version of head, shoulders, knees and toes, which is very popular amongst younger children.
Overall, there are other sport activities that allows educators to integrate aspects of Maori, like water
sport. I think it gives a chance for students to be creative and actively participate in activities, but
also keeping in mind of the Maori culture and history.
Sports is a significant part of nz culture, for example, The Olympic Games have been an important
part of New Zealand 's interaction with the rest of the world. Sport has shaped our sense of cultural
well–being. As a small nation we have often seen achievement at sporting events like the Olympics
as a measure of our progression or status as a nation. Although, we have won a number of medals as
well.
Rugby is very important to us. It is a core part of kiwi culture and plays an important role. In
Europe, everyone plays soccer (or, should I say, football). In Japan, its baseball. But here, it is
definitely rugby.
We also have separate sport channels and time allocated at the end of the

How Does Sport Affect Australian Culture
Whether you love or loath sport, there is no denying that sport is an integral part of the Australian
culture and what makes this great nation. The pride of place that sport has in the Australian culture is
far from a myth.
In 1788, when the first fleet arrived, sport arrived in Australia. Many of the new settlers brought
their love of sport with them. Since before Federation, sporting successes have assisted Australia to
establish its identity. Contests between the Australian settlements and Britain were considered to be
tests of the new country 1. Successes of the Australia cricket team and in particular, Sir Donald
Bradman, during the hardships of the 1930s Depression era helped to lift the spirits of Australia 1.

Cheerleading Is A Sport
Some play, others cheer. This formula has remained for decades in many sports such as soccer and
football, in which cheerleaders are represented as "bimbos" animating the game and entertaining the
crowd. Cheerleading is a regrouping of three sports: dancing, stunt and gymnastics, yet most people
do not believe it is a sport. But what exactly makes something an activity, a hobby, a sport?
According to the Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors, a sport is "a physical activity
or a competition against an opponent, governed by rules and conditions in which a winner is
declared and the main purpose of the competition is a comparison of skills". This discipline
originated in the United States over a century ago . It started around the franchises of football and
basketball, but already began in the 30's of the last century to become an independent sport and to
separate from the entertainment. The competitive cheerleading is different from the animation that is
usually seen in professional sports. The teams are valued for the skill they demonstrate in their
choreography, in which they perform somersaults, pyramids, jumps and different types of
acrobatics. There are different modalities and the execution combines elements of courage, physical
exigency and, sometimes, risk. There is no way that anyone could be a cheerleader if they are not
athletically prepared. Cheerleaders are required to lift girls their weight or even heavier, to lift, spin,
jump and lay

Sports Influence On American Culture
Anyone who has ever been in America does not need to be there long to realize how much of an
impact sports have on American culture. They are everywhere. Nearly every child has played on a
sports team at least once in their life, even if it was only when they were in kindergarten. As adults,
sports pop up everywhere: television, radio, newspapers for local, and the news channel on the TV.
Trying to live a life completely without the influence of sports proves to become nearly impossible.
So what type of influence do sports really have on people? To start with, many people would agree
that sports have long term impacts when it comes to personality. The majority of sports have teams.
Even individual sports such as track, swimming, and gymnastics have team competitions.
Successfully working in a team environment helps in work environments. According to Kevin
Kniffin, a professor who specializes in Management, Organizational Behavior, and Sports Analytics,
people who participated in sports make more ideal candidates for jobs. "Hiring managers expect
former student–athletes (compared with people who participated in other popular extracurriculars)
to have more self–confidence, self–respect and leadership; actual measures of behavior in a sample
of people who had graduated from high school more than five decades earlier showed those
expectations proved accurate." (). All of those characteristics help tremendously in the real world.

Apologia In Sports Research Paper
II. Sports and Apologia Commentary Apologia In Sports –Commentary #1 Apologia is an incredibly
important field in the media, let alone in sports. A recurring theme in the recent sports culture is the
mistakes of popular athletes. Sports culture has become a huge aspect of our society. As more time
passes, sports become more influential in our communities. It has come to the point where everyone
tunes in or hears about the mishaps of our athletic role model and their public apologies. It seems
like every week there is another tragedy in sports, in the sense that another star athlete has
potentially ruined his career. Every month there are athletes pissing their opportunities away. And
people are always drooling to see what they have to say about it, if they are sorry or that they denial.
Although it is getting more popular now, forms of apologia have been involved in sports ever since
sports became popular. The earliest major form of athletic apologia was the Black Sox scandal. The
Black Sox Scandal has become huge deal in Baseball and all of the major sports. Allegedly, the

Sports As A Fundamental Aspect Of American Culture Essay
The phrase "More than just a game" is used so often to describe the passion one has for a particular
sport, that when you hear it, it may go in one ear and out the other. From the outside looking in,
some may not view sport as beneficial beyond exercise or pure entertainment purposes. To others, it
provides significant incentives that last far longer than just the duration of your participation. Sports
serves as a fundamental aspect of American culture and their values are significant when it comes to
their effect on economics, politics, mass media, and public influence. Athletics attempts to help us
understand the values and ethics that apply not only to athletes, but to an entire society. In American
society sports holds a social significance and it influences almost every aspect of our lives. Athletics
generate billions of dollars each year, thus causing a huge positive economic impact on the U.S.
economy. Tons of that money comes from companies purchasing advertisements and endorsements
because of the effect sports can have on future sales. "The sports market in North America was
worth $60.5 billion in 2014 (Forbes Magazine)." Sports also affects how individuals may act or
conduct themselves to represent their stand on general societal issues. Since it is such a huge aspect
in society, people may give a certain level of validity to those related to professional sport to. When
athletes have off the field issues that arise such as domestic violence, criminal behavior,

Those who start a sport because they relish it and derive benefits from participation may be more
liable to make it a perennial activity. However many people drop out of sport is often at an early age
because they no longer perceive its value. Fun is the most mundane reason adults and children give
for initially becoming involved in sport. Conversely, when sport is no longer fun children and youth
are more liable to stop participating.
Parents largely name positive personal and convivial values when describing their hopes for their
children in playing sport. They hope that playing sport will edify their children to have frolic, do
their best, feel good about themselves, play fair, have deference for others, be a component of a

Chinese Americans often stayed in Chinatown in San Francisco and while it was a cultural center

pickup games between a few women turned into an organized pastime where they trained to become
better than any other women's team, and even some men's teams, in the city. Basketball was also
used as a tool to combat racism. The Chinese women would consistently win over white women
even without their privilege. They broke norms in the name of winning and bringing success to the

Professional Football: The Five Concussions In Sports Culture
American football is very popular in American culture today. Professional football games bring a lot
of people together and are something little kids dream to play when they are older. When it comes to
the topic of Professional football, most will agree that it is a violent sport. Where this agreement
usually ends, however, is on the question of is it worth playing or not. Some are convinced that it is
and others feel that the sport is too dangerous. However people feel they usually still watch NFL

Culture In Sports Culture
"Without understanding a culture's sports, we cannot understand the culture itself" (Gorn and Oriard,
1995). The defining parts of a culture can also shape a country's history. A large part of the Greek
identity is being the nation that began the Olympics hundreds of years ago. As America began to
mature, sports helped to shape its identity as well. One piece of America's identity is that it was and
is home to millions of immigrants from all over the world. The music to one of the most recognized
sports songs in America, 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame", was composed by Albert Von Tilzer, a first
generation Jewish immigrant (Patterson, 2008). Individuals and groups have contributed to making
America's history of sports what it is today. African Americans and women are two of the most
discussed groups when it comes to United States sports history. Jackie Robinson is credited with
being the first African American to play in the major leagues and "may well have been the most
influential black American of the past 50 years," (Gorn and Oriard, 1995). His work allowed the
1971 Pittsburgh Pirates to field the first all African American and Latino line–up twenty–four years
later. To this day, he is honored throughout baseball on April 15th every year. His number, 42, is
retired throughout the majors, and is only ever worn on Jackie Robinson Day. Decades after his
death, Jackie Robinson is still remembered for the barriers he broke for African Americans in the
Negro Leagues, as well

Pitz: The Role Of Sports In American Culture
When you think of entertainment what do you first think of? Perhaps you said sports. Sports have
long been a source of entertainment, competition, and even exercise. This idea of sport first entered
this world over 3,500 years ago in ancient Mesoamerican. It was the center of culture, politics, and
social lives for the whole civilization. It solved political problems or it was just a way to have fun. It
has evolved and modernized into one of the most profitable and loved things in the world. We now
have hundreds of sports that involve teams, rules, fans, and other things that originated from this one
Mesoamerican ballgame called Pitz. When Americans think of sports, some of the first things that
come to mind are the NBA, the NFL, along with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A hacha was a representation of the human head (early ones might have actually been heads) with a
handle attached and was used as a trophy for a winning player, a piece of ceremonial equipment or
as a marker in the court itself. A palma was also most likely a trophy or element of ceremonial
costume worn by ball players. They are frequently represented in stone and can take the form of
arms, hands, a player or a fan–tailed bird. Other trophies for game winners include stone yokes
(typically u–shaped to be worn around the waist in imitation of the protective waist gear worn by
players) and hand stones, often elaborately carved. All of these trophies are frequently found in
graves and are reminders of the link between the sport and the underworld in Mesoamerican
mythology. As games often had a religious significance the captain of the losing team, or even
sometimes the entire team, were sacrificed to the gods. Such scenes are depicted in the decorative
sculpture on the courts themselves, perhaps most famously on the South ball court at El Tajín and at
Chichén Itzá, where one relief panel shows two teams of seven players with one player having been
decapitated. Another ominous indicator of the macabre turn that this sporting event could take is the
presence of tzompantli (the skull racks where severed heads from sacrifices were displayed)
rendered in stone carvings near the ball courts. The Classic Maya even invented a parallel game
where captives, once defeated in the real game, were tied up and used as balls themselves and
unceremoniously rolled down a flight of

Sports Influence On American Culture
One the richest histories in the world is the history of sports. Sports are filled with many different
legends in multiple eras, multiple sports, and multiple mentalities. Over the years sports have

different sports filled with different role models and leaders. While football is a worldwide game
other sports are unknown or unfamiliar to people that are not from that certain country (Boyle,

America is most known for their love of baseball and football (Boyle, Raymond, and Haynes,

the Dallas Cowboys are as they are "America's team." Intertwined even into political talk, sports
take over a large part of the country year round. Unlike most countries, the favorite football in
America is American football rather than what is called football in other countries. Over the seas in
many European countries rugby is the main attraction along with a sport called Cricket (Boyle,
Raymond, and Haynes, Richard). Rugby and cricket compare very closely to American football and
baseball and engulf the country around teams and the play of the sport itself. In the land down under
cricket is also very popular along with Aussie Rules (Boyle, Raymond, and Haynes, Richard). The
world is vast in sports and oddly cultures around the world have different opinions of the best sport.
In America, cricket is rarely played if played at all by citizens. Even though it is thought to be one of

popular sports in the world without an eruption of arguments from every country they will all agree
that sports are indeed deep in the culture of where they are played. Whether national or

Culture, Race, and Gender in Sports Essay
Culture, Race, and Gender in Sports When a person of a specific gender enters a non–traditional
sport for their gender/sex, many social and moral issues will arise challenging that person involved
in that particular sport. The intentions of the individual will be questioned as well as their personal
interest in the sport. Before any of these questions are asked, there must be a redefinition of gender
roles, femininity, and masculinity. In order for a person to enter a non–traditional sport for their

Through the movies viewed in this course this semester, we saw women who were able to play
against men and still keep their femininity. Nothing is lost when playing sports not traditionally
meant for a particular race or gender. Society must become more understanding when it comes to
the sports different types of people play and hinder from stereotyping anyone when they participate
and perform well in that sport. When women decide to participate in sports traditionally for men
such as bodybuilding, they risk the chance of being socially stereotyped as lesbians, or simply
viewed as "less feminine" then say women figure skaters. For example, Venus Williams is seen as
criticized for being very masculine in build and judged on that by her performance. The media has
commented on how well she plays, and has compared her to men in her sport. She receives fewer
endorsements than many other tennis players do because of her looks (but mainly due to her race).
Men place themselves in the same situation when they chose to perform/participate in traditional
female sports like field hockey, socially stereotyped as gay or less masculine than hockey players.
There has been a change in the way certain gender sports were viewed when women/men attempted
to challenge the boundaries. Gymnastics for example began as an all–male sport. It was believed
that women did not have the build nor strength to compete in this sport. In 1928 were women

Australian Sports In The 1950s
Sport in Australia has grown increasingly important from 1945 to the present day as more traditional
sports soon expanded into a wider variety of sports with many factors contributing to this change.
As a result of the war, many men wanted membership opportunities to sporting clubs to reinforce
the bonding of mateship they gained during the war. As well as Australian men getting more
involved in sports, migrants from European countries started arriving in Australia, they also brought

This includes factors such as sporting competitions and television expansion. This has left a positive
impact on Australia as a nation because of the way our lifestyle has changed in the ways of pop
culture as we are now a country which is connected to others throughout the world. The increase in
growth of popularity in sports throughout the years has lead to an increase of Australian viewers of
sports making our national identity stronger in the terms of being a 'sports mad' country. Many clubs
throughout Australia have been built by migrants from across the globe which helped build our
culture of sports and a multicultural society therefore leaving a positive impact on the Australian

television companies to pay large sums of money to sponsor certain players, teams or competition

Fantasy Sports : A Staple Of American Culture
Fantasy sports leagues have been a staple of American culture since 1963 when the first fantasy
sports league came to be and now has approximately 56.8 million people participate in fantasy
sports leagues per year in the United States alone. Gambling also has a storied history in the United
States as well with Jamestown, first British American settlement, financed with lotteries in 1687.
They now both appear in the sports news feed, as there is a question to whether fantasy sports
leagues are a form of gambling and is it legal. Fantasy sports leagues are a form of gambling and
there need to be restrictions because the risk outweighs the reward for people.
The first action of gambling goes all the way back to Jamestown, Virginia in 1612, however, the
Legislative Authority of Virginia adopted laws to outlaw gambling in the colony. (Staff) Throughout
the 1700s, popular forms of gambling were be horse–racing or lotteries. Nevertheless in the colonies
they discouraged this because the lotteries were products of the British Empire and they put a
boycott on all British goods. Then in 1833, due to fraud and not enough funds, Pennsylvania became
the first state to ban lotteries.(Staff) In 1910, Nevada becomes the last state to outlaw gambling and
now all forms of gambling are not officially illegal in the United States. The Chicago White Sox

Persuasive Essay: Why MMA Is A Sport Between Cultures
MMA is a sport between cultures. It will teach you discipline, make you physically stronger, and it
relieves stress, gives you confidence and teaches you how to have self defense. People can assume
people are saying it shouldn't be legal due to the fact it could be potentially dangerous or people
could get injured. Anyone who joins MMA will go in knowing that they could get hurt. You cannot
force someone to go the ring and fight because there is a age limit. This prevents a lot of danger.
There are very strict rules such as you can't kick someone who is on the ground, you can't hit in
certain places. In addition, it is a sport. Sports such as hockey, football, baseball, and boxing are
actually more dangerous due to the lack of rules within safety. There has been deaths within these
sports but not one death has ever been recorded in MMA with the proper, closely monitored rule
following. In conclusion, it is a fairly safe sport that mixes cultures, teaches you many different
things and no one will ever mess with you if you know MMA. ... Show more content on

getting into either a cage and fighting someone. There is no reason for it to be illegal. No illegal

Sport In Native American Culture
The significance of sport in American culture can be traced back as early as when the Native
Americans dominated the territory. In evaluating the importance of sport during this time period,
Gorn and Goldstein focus on two important concepts that can be compared with today's sporting
landscape. First, they develop the idea that sport is part of the social and religious (sacred) identity
of a people, society or nation. Second, they examine the reverence for the athlete in which a higher
standard for achievement and conduct are expected. "Virgin Land," reads as a discussion of the
history and importance of sport and recreation in Native American and early colonial culture.

Italian and Ukrainian teams were forbidden to have sexual relations during the duration of the
tournament. It was feared that the influence of this vice would diminish the team's chances for
success at the highest level. Similarly, as James Mooney states in American Anthropologist,
"Cherokees who played stickball must not engage in intercourse for a month before a game...." It
can be assumed that this would cause them to be less aggressive in their quest for perfection.
Today's athletes, in general, are superior both mentally and physically to any of their predecessors.
We hold our athletes, coaches and owners to a standard of excellence that can be argued, rarely
exists in other professional arena's. In Native American culture you can begin to see, as described by
Gorn and Goldstein this reverence that is attached to the superior athletes of the day. Not only was it
a game, but victory was an opportunity to improve the fortunes of the Indians in areas of
consequence such as "placating spirits, or warding off disease, or ensuring adequate rainfall." I
believe that this responsibility to bring good fortune through athletic contest, brought with it an
almost spiritual reverence of the athlete which continues to exist today. Commercials persuade the
individual to "Be like Mike," or connect with the everyman of our generation in the ads that
encourage the belief that "I am Tiger Woods." These athletes are otherworldly in

factors that have been identified are the percent of people residing in a standard metropolitan

one in seventy–one men will experience rape at some point in their life (McMahon). Several studies

Youth Sports : A Trend That Has Touched Every Household
Youth sports in America have become a trend that has touched every household. Sports have become
so ingrained in American culture that toddlers have even begun to experience it. Almost all children
from the ages of six to ten have kicked a soccer ball or hit a ball with a bat. While studies have
shown that youth team sports have a tremendous positive impact on a child's social development,
many children have run into serious injuries. Some of these injuries can require extensive surgeries,
rehabilitation, and could cause developmental problems in these young children. Many of these
injuries stem from overuse and children not being developmentally ready for the intensity of a
certain sport. Today, competitive sports culture has caused a rise in youth injuries related to sports.
For decades, children have been involved in team sports such as soccer, tee–ball, and basketball.
However, children are starting to begin playing sports much earlier. Some start dance lessons,
gymnastics classes, and even join rugby teams by the ages of three and four (Onderko). In Patty
Onderko's article about toddler sports, she references orthopedist Allston Stubbs, who says that
recently he has seen more adolescents and preteens with major shoulder, knee and hip problems.
According to Stubbs this is "in large part due to the fact that kids are starting sports at very young
ages when their bones are still developing" (Onderko). Children near the ages of four and six grow

Ethnographic Interview On Sports In American Culture

  • 1. Ethnographic Interview on Sports in American Culture Andrew is a third year chemical engineering student at the University of Louisville. He grew up in Hodgenville, KY. Which is a small town just south east of Elizabethtown. He lives in an apartment with one other student also attending the University of Louisville and myself. This apartment is where the interview took place. The topic that I chose for this ethnographic interview was sports in American culture. Sports are popular in America, and are a big part of the culture in America. I would say most people in America have played sports, whether they played as kids, in high school, at the collegiate level, or even professional. A great deal of people also enjoy watching sporting events. The following were the questions asked during the interview. How have sports affected your life? Why do you think sports are so popular in America's culture? How are sports a part of the culture in America? What do you think about the amount of money spent on spectator sports? I started off the interview by asking how sports have affected his life. Sports are an important part of most American's lives, including Andrews. Andrew is a big sports fan and played soccer on his high school team. "Sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Starting from when my dad first taught me how to throw, kick and hit a ball." "It was a way for me to bond with my family and friends as I was growing up." From this interview I learned that athletics/sports were a way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Sports As An Element Of Culture 1.1 Introduction Sports have different meanings for different people and across societies (Laker 2001:4). The way one engages in sports is influenced by the cultural or ethnic group to which one belongs (Sever 2005:4). Even though the rules of sport may stay constant, meanings diverge and are varied (Besnier and Brownell 2012). Sports serves as one of the most contested and celebrated institutions in our society (Appleby and Foster 2013:1). As a result, it will be impossible to fully understand contemporary society without acknowledging the place of sports (Jarvie 2006:2). The body transformed from being a biological entity to a cultural body since the 1980s to help understand the complexities of the body in sports (Besnier and Brownell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sport is conventionally associated with masculinity and defined as a masculine domain (Server 2005 and Appleby and Foster 2013:14). The practice of sport is related to a number of assumptions about leisure and work, which are often lived differently by men and women (Sever 2005:4). Scholars have discovered that, sports like gymnastics, dance, and figure skating mostly associated with beauty and grace are mostly regarded as feminine (Koivula 2001). For example, the use of attractive, scantily clad young women acting as 'card girls' (Oates, 1987) making gender a very significant factor in the research process through the complicities and collusions of masculinity (Connell, 1995). Conversely, sports like football and boxing with elements of violence, aggression and physical contact are regarded as masculine (Koivula 2001). These philosophies are immersed in social ideas which are influenced by what the society considers should be done (Appleby and Foster 2013:14). Such persistent beliefs limit opportunities for sport participation for both male and female athletes (Coakley 2009). Sports is a unique product of social reality and it is the only activity that combines the serious with the frivolous, playfulness with intensity, and the ideological with the structural (Frey and Eitzen 1991:504). Sports related capacities of athletes are affected by a complex interplay among genetic contributions, social climates, and physical environments. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It's the only Portuguese speaking country in Latin America and the Roman Catholic Church is the national religion followed. The country's Life expectancy is about 69 ; with the culture being influenced by Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Japan and Arab immigrants; allowing the country to have a diverse cultural history. (Costa, E. F., 2002, p. 63). Currently in Brazil, there has been a shift in the economy; poverty levels and the cost of living are rising, as well as transportation costs due to the country's elaborate spending and plans for funding for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics (Ghosh, 2013). Out cries from the citizen's state that the Government of Brazil isn't spending its money anymore on the areas that need it the most, but instead they focus on funding sports (Ghosh, 2013). History Over the years, Brazil has undergone some major changes in its country from its economy, to its government, the country's native language, the population (in terms of culture and size), the social and environmental problems, etc.; but more importantly its independence from Portugal on September 7, 1822. Brazil is the only Portuguese–speaking nation in South America and about three–quarters of all Brazilians belong to the Roman Catholic Church; others are either members of traditional Protestant denominations, evangelical movements, or practices derived from African religions. During the 20th century, Brazil experienced rapid urban growth; as 81% of the country's total population was living in urban areas. This growth did aid to its overall economic development but it also created several problems such as: social, security, environmental, and political for many cities ("Brazil: History", 2011). • 13. Sports in Pop Culture Abstract Gender, race, and competitiveness in youth sports have been controversial beginning on the very first day of sports broadening its boundaries (Granderson, 2012). From Brent Barry to Kristy Yamaguchi to Tiger Woods, one of the youngest golf champions ever, sports has always been "one way." Different people of different backgrounds, ethnic groups, and social classes, and ages have shown that he or she can do anything if they have the will to accomplish the task (Granderson, 2012). Tiger Woods won 71 PGA Tours, Kristy Yamaguchi excelled in figure skating and Brent Barry showed that White men can jump when he won the 1996 slam dunk contest. Race, gender, and youth have nothing to do with ability and skill in sports (Granderson, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A clear example of poor sportsmanship is in the recent highlight of the (bounty program) with the New Orleans Saints. According to the New York Times, players collected bonuses if they enable the opposing team member to return to the game because of hard hits or injuries (Battista, 2012). This team of highly paid athletes acted irresponsibly, caused bodily harm to the other players, and brought shame upon the franchise. The United States appears to be a nation obsessed with sports, more than fans based on the virtual addition to sports statistics (Petracca & Sorapure, 2007). Most fans are hook on statistic; this is how they measure the achievements of the most likeable athletes and team. This may be how fans hold on to memories of never to repeated athletes performance and without a doubt to find more evidence of Americans preoccupation with sports (Petracca & Sorapure, 2007). For Instance; the mass media of newspapers who allot an entire section sport reports and statistics, weekly and monthly publications focusing on sports, and, important sport events, such as the Super Bowl. Sports Culture: Article Analysis In this article Michael Serazio, an associate professor in the department of communications at Boston College informs that Sports culture has become the new religion, but he questions why people are so faithful. Serazio demonstrates that in our culture, humans have created a new meaning and devotion to sports. Stating that totems are an obvious and noticeable form that a society interpreters to be different and shows its personality or beliefs. By creating such logos with distinct characteristics, patterns, and colors to form a physical illustration of sports teams it gives their supporters a recognizable sense of "identity and unity". Lacrosse at first was a men's sport, but transposed soon after to acquiesce both genders to play. Lacrosse is also one of the oldest sports created. Lacrosse, originally named Baggataway, originated from the Native Americans back in the 15th century and was played with a wooden stick with a small net on top, it was played up throughout Canada, but was really popular around the Great Lakes, Mid–Atlantic Seaboard, and the South of the U.S. Tribes such as the Iroquois, Huron, Algonquin and even more played lacrosse. Lacrosse wasn't really well known by the Popular Culture, but as soon as it started to spread it is no longer a "folk culture sport" it is a popular culture sport. All sports soon became a popular culture throughout time as they grow and leave their originated state. Such as football and soccer, they were at first Folk Culture games, but now they are Popular Culture games. Lacrosse was called Baggataway until the early 17th Century by the Europeans. French Jesuit missionaries thought that the stick resembled the staff that the Bishops use to walk around which in French is named La Crosse and that is when they thought it would be "proper" to named Baggataway Lacrosse. Popular Culture has affected a lot of Folk Culture traditions, as for taking their styles of the games and the traditions they use. Without Folk Culture we wouldn't have a lot of the resources that we do nowadays. • 33. Nfl Influence On Traditional Sports Culture Traditionally, sports culture has always been thought of as a "male arena," a strong, masculine world ruled by men, pumped up with violence. The National Football League (NFL) and its players embody this resemblance. Despite the no–politics rule, the NFL use flyovers of military aircraft before games, promoting the American military. Military is also common at MLB games. For example, President George W. Bush threw out the first pitch while Zirin attended the Washington Nationals game. This proves that these kinds of displays are political. According to Zirin, this kinds of acts are unnoticed because of how ideology functions: it "naturalizes" a set of ideas "that deflect attention away from other realities." • 37. Disadvantages Of Athletic Participation Review of Related Literature The focus of this chapter of related literature regarding an examination of the effects of athletic participation on student athletes. The discussion of this examination will be presented in the following order: (1) disadvantages and advantages of parental involvement; (2) disadvantages of athletic participation and (3) benefits of athletic participation. Disadvantages and Advantages of Parental Involvement There are several research studies that support the disadvantages and advantages of parental involvement in athletic participation. According to Hellstedt (1990), parents may create high levels of pressure, while under–involved parents do not provide enough support to facilitate a child's desire to participate. But those parents who are moderately involved seem to provide just the right balance not only to facilitate enjoyment, but also to challenge the child to continue to grow and develop his/her skills (Hellstedt, 1990). Without support, especially financial and emotional, it would be very difficult for a child to be able to participate. However, the pressure felt from the parent who is over–involved could easily take out all the enjoyment of playing sports (Hellstedt, 1990). According to Donna Merkel (2013), the challenges faced by adults who are involved in youth sports, from parents, to coaches, to sports medicine providers, are multiple, complex, and varied across ethnic cultures, gender, communities, and socioeconomic levels. • 41. Art And Sports In American Culture How should art and sports contribute to the "good life" of an American citizen? How should we value art and sports in our culture? What is the real purpose of arts and physical education? How does art and sports take part in my culture? How should we, as a culture value sports and art? We should value art and sport more as part of our culture. Dr. Dana Gioia in his 2007 Commencement address to Stanford University states, "The role of the culture, however, must go beyond economics. It is not focused on the price of things, but on their value. And, above all, culture should tell us what is beyond pride, including what does not belong in the market. A culture should also provide some cogent view of the good life beyond mass accumulation." " There is a difference between cost and value. 2 people could have the same object with the same cost but could value that object differently. For example, one person could purchase a painting for $500, another person could receive that same painting with the same cost from a close relative. The person that paid $500 would value it as an expensive item, and the person who received the painting from a close relative would value it as something they would cherish because it was given to them as a gift. Same thing with sports, someone could be in a seeing that it is something that they take pride in and another person could take participate in a sport because their parents did it or their parents want them to do it. Thus, classing them into typical male gender roles (Aphrodite Pristess, 2014). For this section I chose to take the first athlete to come out as gay and a more recent athlete coming out to compare their experiences. In 1978 Glenn Burke became the first openly gay man in sports culture. Regardless of his baseball talents he was quickly traded to a different team (Kaplan, 2015). When Burke came out acceptance was not an option. The sports organizations and teams were uncomfortable with his sexual orientation. In an interview, Burke admitted that the team he was playing for at the time offered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once again, the topic of religion and how it plays a role can be related to the sexual education curriculum. Based on the type of school as student attends, they will learn different things about sex and sexuality. Until recently, catholic schools in Ontario used abstinence based curriculum to teach students about sex. If there was discussion about intercourse it was between a heterosexual husband and wife (Stonefish & Lafrenier, 2015). To me this seems extremely unrealistic to be teaching children abstinence when most, if not all of them are aware of sexual activities and or participate in them. The policies that surrounded the curriculum did not allow any room for teachers to introduce the larger picture of sexuality. The current curriculum allows students to learn about self–expression and healthy relationships (Stonefish &Lafrenier, 2015). In my opinion, this is the most important thing to teach children about themselves, what their personal boundaries are and that there is no normal it is simply an illusion that was created from past values and beliefs. An example of this is "religious leaders, who have long been considered a source of counsel and support for many family issues, have been revealed as critically significant factors in determining the cause for depression in sexual minority youth" (Stonefish & Lafrenier, 2015). • 53. Is Sport An Important Part Of Nz Culture? Is sport an important part of nz culture? New Zealand has a very unique and a dynamic culture. Our culture is mixed and each one has its importance in our society. I think sports has played a part in our identity, but it is our culture that make us who we are. Maori culture is indigenous, and in sports we can incorporate aspects of Maori language and movements, such as, the He tama tu tama activity. I have also seen children playing the Maori version of head, shoulders, knees and toes, which is very popular amongst younger children. Overall, there are other sport activities that allows educators to integrate aspects of Maori, like water sport. I think it gives a chance for students to be creative and actively participate in activities, but also keeping in mind of the Maori culture and history. Sports is a significant part of nz culture, for example, The Olympic Games have been an important part of New Zealand 's interaction with the rest of the world. Sport has shaped our sense of cultural well–being. As a small nation we have often seen achievement at sporting events like the Olympics as a measure of our progression or status as a nation. Although, we have won a number of medals as well. Rugby is very important to us. It is a core part of kiwi culture and plays an important role. Many of the new settlers brought their love of sport with them. Since before Federation, sporting successes have assisted Australia to establish its identity. • 61. Cheerleading Is A Sport Some play, others cheer. This formula has remained for decades in many sports such as soccer and football, in which cheerleaders are represented as "bimbos" animating the game and entertaining the crowd. Cheerleading is a regrouping of three sports: dancing, stunt and gymnastics, yet most people do not believe it is a sport. But what exactly makes something an activity, a hobby, a sport? According to the Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors, a sport is "a physical activity or a competition against an opponent, governed by rules and conditions in which a winner is declared and the main purpose of the competition is a comparison of skills". This discipline originated in the United States over a century ago . It started around the franchises of football and basketball, but already began in the 30's of the last century to become an independent sport and to separate from the entertainment. The competitive cheerleading is different from the animation that is usually seen in professional sports. The teams are valued for the skill they demonstrate in their choreography, in which they perform somersaults, pyramids, jumps and different types of acrobatics. There are different modalities and the execution combines elements of courage, physical exigency and, sometimes, risk. There is no way that anyone could be a cheerleader if they are not athletically prepared. Cheerleaders are required to lift girls their weight or even heavier, to lift, spin, jump and lay ... • 65. Sports Influence On American Culture Anyone who has ever been in America does not need to be there long to realize how much of an impact sports have on American culture. They are everywhere. Nearly every child has played on a sports team at least once in their life, even if it was only when they were in kindergarten. As adults, sports pop up everywhere: television, radio, newspapers for local, and the news channel on the TV. Trying to live a life completely without the influence of sports proves to become nearly impossible. So what type of influence do sports really have on people? To start with, many people would agree that sports have long term impacts when it comes to personality. The majority of sports have teams. Even individual sports such as track, swimming, and gymnastics have team competitions. Successfully working in a team environment helps in work environments. According to Kevin Kniffin, a professor who specializes in Management, Organizational Behavior, and Sports Analytics, people who participated in sports make more ideal candidates for jobs. "Hiring managers expect former student–athletes (compared with people who participated in other popular extracurriculars) to have more self–confidence, self–respect and leadership; actual measures of behavior in a sample of people who had graduated from high school more than five decades earlier showed those expectations proved accurate." The defining parts of a culture can also shape a country's history. A large part of the Greek identity is being the nation that began the Olympics hundreds of years ago. As America began to mature, sports helped to shape its identity as well. One piece of America's identity is that it was and is home to millions of immigrants from all over the world. The music to one of the most recognized sports songs in America, 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame", was composed by Albert Von Tilzer, a first generation Jewish immigrant (Patterson, 2008). Individuals and groups have contributed to making America's history of sports what it is today. African Americans and women are two of the most discussed groups when it comes to United States sports history. Jackie Robinson is credited with being the first African American to play in the major leagues and "may well have been the most influential black American of the past 50 years," (Gorn and Oriard, 1995). His work allowed the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates to field the first all African American and Latino line–up twenty–four years later. To this day, he is honored throughout baseball on April 15th every year. His number, 42, is retired throughout the majors, and is only ever worn on Jackie Robinson Day. A hacha was a representation of the human head (early ones might have actually been heads) with a handle attached and was used as a trophy for a winning player, a piece of ceremonial equipment or as a marker in the court itself. A palma was also most likely a trophy or element of ceremonial costume worn by ball players. They are frequently represented in stone and can take the form of arms, hands, a player or a fan–tailed bird. Other trophies for game winners include stone yokes (typically u–shaped to be worn around the waist in imitation of the protective waist gear worn by players) and hand stones, often elaborately carved. All of these trophies are frequently found in graves and are reminders of the link between the sport and the underworld in Mesoamerican mythology. As games often had a religious significance the captain of the losing team, or even sometimes the entire team, were sacrificed to the gods. Such scenes are depicted in the decorative sculpture on the courts themselves, perhaps most famously on the South ball court at El Tajín and at Chichén Itzá, where one relief panel shows two teams of seven players with one player having been decapitated. Another ominous indicator of the macabre turn that this sporting event could take is the presence of tzompantli (the skull racks where severed heads from sacrifices were displayed) rendered in stone carvings near the ball courts. The Classic Maya even invented a parallel game where captives, once defeated in the real game, were tied up and used as balls themselves and unceremoniously rolled down a flight of ... They were able to add 15 venues that are more demountable within no time. Their theme was perfect; they also shared a document where they promised that they would add a festivity into the environment. All the sports associations across America were keen to shell out a whopping $10 million to execute the recommendation of the Olympic committee. • 129. Persuasive Essay: Why MMA Is A Sport Between Cultures MMA is a sport between cultures. It will teach you discipline, make you physically stronger, and it relieves stress, gives you confidence and teaches you how to have self defense. People can assume people are saying it shouldn't be legal due to the fact it could be potentially dangerous or people could get injured. Anyone who joins MMA will go in knowing that they could get hurt. You cannot force someone to go the ring and fight because there is a age limit. This prevents a lot of danger. There are very strict rules such as you can't kick someone who is on the ground, you can't hit in certain places. In addition, it is a sport. Sports such as hockey, football, baseball, and boxing are actually more dangerous due to the lack of rules within safety. There has been deaths within these sports but not one death has ever been recorded in MMA with the proper, closely monitored rule following. In conclusion, it is a fairly safe sport that mixes cultures, teaches you many different things and no one will ever mess with you if you know MMA. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People who join know what they are getting into and people have to start to learn from your mistakes, so in essence it is their fault in getting into either a cage and fighting someone. There is no reason for it to be illegal. No illegal activities happen during the matches and everything is consensual. There are no deaths in the ring, just fighting. As long as everyone involved consents and knows what they are getting into, MMA should be legal. Other dangerous sports are legal, this one should be, as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 133. Sport In Native American Culture The significance of sport in American culture can be traced back as early as when the Native Americans dominated the territory. In evaluating the importance of sport during this time period, Gorn and Goldstein focus on two important concepts that can be compared with today's sporting landscape. First, they develop the idea that sport is part of the social and religious (sacred) identity of a people, society or nation. Second, they examine the reverence for the athlete in which a higher standard for achievement and conduct are expected. "Virgin Land," reads as a discussion of the history and importance of sport and recreation in Native American and early colonial culture. However, it is my position that the authors' main purpose is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Italian and Ukrainian teams were forbidden to have sexual relations during the duration of the tournament. It was feared that the influence of this vice would diminish the team's chances for success at the highest level. Similarly, as James Mooney states in American Anthropologist, "Cherokees who played stickball must not engage in intercourse for a month before a game...." It can be assumed that this would cause them to be less aggressive in their quest for perfection. Today's athletes, in general, are superior both mentally and physically to any of their predecessors. We hold our athletes, coaches and owners to a standard of excellence that can be argued, rarely exists in other professional arena's. In Native American culture you can begin to see, as described by Gorn and Goldstein this reverence that is attached to the superior athletes of the day. Not only was it a game, but victory was an opportunity to improve the fortunes of the Indians in areas of consequence such as "placating spirits, or warding off disease, or ensuring adequate rainfall." I believe that this responsibility to bring good fortune through athletic contest, brought with it an almost spiritual reverence of the athlete which continues to exist today. Commercials persuade the individual to "Be like Mike," or connect with the everyman of our generation in the ads that encourage the belief that "I am Tiger Woods." These athletes are otherworldly in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 137. Organizational Culture In Sports When I think of organizational culture the first thing that comes to my mind is sports teams. You.ll hear people talk about teams having winning cultures or defensive cultures and so on. Sports are much like other businesses however, the goal of their business is to win. How do the teams go about winning? Some teams are able to win year in and year out. While other teams struggle and keep trying to find ways to win and improve. Successful teams that have developed a winning culture tend to keep the same coach, general manager, and core group of players. While teams that struggle constantly change personal and try to develop a culture. The basics of business and management can still apply to sports teams. The team owner is the same as the CEO ... So they hired a new coach to see if that made the difference. The year before they finished 5th in their conference and the season they brought in the new coach they were first in the league and won the championship. That was the only major change the team made that season. The new coach expanded the current culture created a new game plan that focused on the team's defensive skill and three point shooting ability as well as focusing on the team first mentality. The new game plan was built on passing the ball, getting shooters open, and using the team's speed and athletic ability to shut down opposing teams. Most importantly the coach created the winning culture that teams thrive for. The goal of the team then was to sustain their culture. Their goal was to keep the coach and players that had lead their team to success. Some players would have to be let go so they could have enough money to re–sign their core players with the hope being they can keep them on the team for their entire ... • 153. Youth Sports : A Trend That Has Touched Every Household Youth sports in America have become a trend that has touched every household. Sports have become so ingrained in American culture that toddlers have even begun to experience it. Almost all children from the ages of six to ten have kicked a soccer ball or hit a ball with a bat. While studies have shown that youth team sports have a tremendous positive impact on a child's social development, many children have run into serious injuries. Some of these injuries can require extensive surgeries, rehabilitation, and could cause developmental problems in these young children. Many of these injuries stem from overuse and children not being developmentally ready for the intensity of a certain sport. Today, competitive sports culture has caused a rise in youth injuries related to sports. For decades, children have been involved in team sports such as soccer, tee–ball, and basketball. However, children are starting to begin playing sports much earlier. Some start dance lessons, gymnastics classes, and even join rugby teams by the ages of three and four (Onderko). In Patty Onderko's article about toddler sports, she references orthopedist Allston Stubbs, who says that recently he has seen more adolescents and preteens with major shoulder, knee and hip problems. According to Stubbs this is "in large part due to the fact that kids are starting sports at very young ages when their bones are still developing" (Onderko). Children near the ages of four and six grow and develop much more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
