Harshad Mehta was an Indian stockbroker who committed numerous financial crimes in 1992 that led to a $780 million scandal on the Bombay Stock Exchange. He took advantage of loopholes in the banking system to divert $4 billion to trigger stock prices. While 27 criminal charges were brought against him, he was only convicted of one charge before his death in 2001 at age 47. Mehta's crimes were exposed by a journalist in 1992 and he was later arrested, banned from stock trading, and charged with 72 criminal offenses.
