Communication is complex from birth as babies rely on sensory signals to interact with caregivers to meet survival needs. Early communication involves crying, smiling, and other behaviors to get attention for needs. As cognitive skills develop, language and reasoning allow for more complex communication, though some rely more on sensory and literal interpretations. Effective communication considers developmental levels, checks for understanding, focuses conversations, and supports those with disabilities or delays through visual aids, simplified language, and addressing emotional states. Barriers like differences in ability, language, environment or disabilities can cause misunderstandings.
Interviews with professionals
The interviews provided insights into the backgrounds and experiences of two speech language pathologists. Both had master's degrees and licenses, with one working in private practice for 16 years and the other at a nonprofit center and schools for 10 years. Their responsibilities included evaluating and treating communication disorders. Though their settings differed, both expressed passion for helping clients improve their communication skills. The interviews highlighted the diversity of practice settings available and increased the student's enthusiasm for pursuing this career.

- Matthew David Pangle came into the world on April 9, 2007, weighing in at 6 lbs. and 9 ounces.
- At 5 weeks old, Matthew began turning blue while drinking his bottle. We were told to switch him to soy formula, which initially helped. He chronically cried after the colic period and we were informed it was acid reflux disorder and were prescribed Zantac. From 6 months to 12 months, he had approximately four seizures and was hospitalized once. No results ever indicated epilepsy.
- My first indicator something was wrong? He stopped looking at me and smiling for the camera, something he always loved to do.
- Social=he made eye contact during the visit
- Concerns noted were: not pointing and loss of language.
- Matty continued to regress, and eventually stopped talking all together. We scheduled an evaluation to have his hearing tested. There was a possibility of some hearing loss, so a consultation at UVA was scheduled. We also scheduled a developmental evaluation.
- Four days after his second birthday and a 30 minute consultation, we were informed that Matty had Autism. We were told to enroll him in school as soon as possible, given a packet of information, and the doctor left the room.
- These services all took place in the home. Speech therapy included working on pointing to pictures, labeling food and having him bring the picture to me and using sign language. Developmental therapy included using toys appropriately, interacting, decreasing sensory defensiveness and working on everyday living skills.
- Child Find is a component of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that requires states to identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities, aged birth to 21, who are in need of early intervention or special education services. This is a two hour meeting that goes over developmental history, parental concerns, medical issues, etc.
- Did I mention that my husband had to leave for three months for a training in Georgia?
- He continued receiving speech and developmental therapy during the school evaluation process.
- Unfortunately, gluten and casein free foods generally cost 3X as much as regular food, and are often difficult to find. I began cooking everything from scratch so I knew what my child was eating and that he was getting proper nutrition.
- Toward the end of the school he attended school three days a week
- Every now and then, he would try to speak
- Did I mention the closest place without a waiting list was Sterling?
- Matty receives 15 hours a week of intensive in-home therapy services, which focus on his communication skills, adaptive functioning, community relationships, social interaction, etc. He is currently on local waiting lists for speech and physical therapy.
