True Grit Coming Of Age Quotes
People do not give it credence that a fourteen year old girl could leave home and go off in the
wintertime to avenge her father s blood. (Portis 11) And many people still do not imagine that a story
like that is even close to being realistic. Even though, True Grit is fictional; it seemed real as the
reader saw Mattie Ross came of age. Coming of age is the transition from youth to adulthood.
Throughout the novel, True Grit, the protagonist, Mattie Ross, develops courage, common sense, and
bravery as she comes of age from her experience of hunting down the man who murdered her father.
The fourteen year old faced many challenges that marked the growth of her maturity.
For the duration of the novel, Mattie Ross was gaining courage as ... Show more content on

I said, If you refuse to go I will have to shoot you. He went on with his work and said, Oh? Then you
had better cock your piece. I had forgotten about that. I pulled the hammer back with both thumbs. All
the way back till it locks, said Chaney. I know how to do it, said I. When it was ready I said, You will
not go with me? I think not, said he. It is just the other way around. You are going with me. I pointed
the revolver at his belly and shot him down. Over the course of this passage, Mattie s confidence
grows. She started out nervous with running into Tom Chaney but in the discussion, she decides to
shoot him. This passage shows the reader just how much Mattie has grown. When Rooster killed
Moon, Mattie was extremely uncomfortable with that death but now she had grown to the point where
she tried to murder a man. Well, it was not just a random man. It was her father s murderer. Although
this was the whole point of the journey; it still reveals development in her character. In the beginning,
she expected Rooster to shoot Tom Chaney but now Mattie had become ready to kill her father s
slaughterer. The whole novel prepared for this moment; the moment where Mattie finally stood up to
the man who single handedly blew up her life. This passage was probably the most momentous part of
the book since it was when Mattie was able to hold her own to get her

Why Enron Became A Middle Man Company
With the changing of the economy in the late 1990s, as the old millennium was ending and the new
one beginning, one particular company discovered a new way to rise to the top in the trading business.
Enron, originally known as a natural gas pipeline company [started by Kenneth Lay in 1985], soon
became known as an energy trading corporation that bought and sold gas as well as electricity. (Fox,
1). With over 20,000 employees and 40 worldwide businesses, The Houston, TX Corporation soon
became a prodigy of the times. Originally it made its profit by promising to deliver a particular
amount of gas to certain businesses at market price on particular days. (O Harrow Jr.). Soon, Enron
became a middle man company, placing it between buyers and sellers and making money off of the
difference between the selling and buying prices. Their books were kept closed to each opposing party,
making Enron the only one to know both prices. (O Harrow Jr.). After entering many complex and
intense contracts, the corporation entered into business with Arthur Andersen, an accounting firm who
handled Enron s auditing. (Fox, 6). Enron had complex services and high rising stocks. At the top of
the game, Enron was a company worth about $70 billion; its stocks were trading at a rate of $90 a
share, and seemed indestructible. Explanation of how Enron worked with the idea of supply and
demand (Phoenix)

In mid 1999, Enron s chief CFO, Andrew Fastow, set up two partnerships

Write About the Ways in Which Steinbeck Presents Either...
Write about the ways in which Steinbeck presents either Crooks or Curley s wife. To what extent does
he create sympathy for either of these characters? Of Mice and Men is set in 1930 s America in the
middle of the economic depression. It is geared towards the pursuit of the American dream, promoting
the ideas of equality, life, liberty and happiness. Steinbeck uses Crooks, and to some extent Curley s
wife to challenge the perception of equality and sometimes the language used is, by modern standards,
racist and misogynistic. There is an irony in the fact that the people judging Crooks are less intelligent
than he is and they refuse to look at anything other than the stereotype of his ethnicity. Steinbeck
reveals as much about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Lennie first enters, Crooks is at first defensive as he is not used to visitors invading his personal
space. He then realises he can have some fun with Lennie, who is nowhere near his intellectual equal
and Crooks reveals a slightly sadistic streak. He metaphorically, dances all over the slow witted
Lennie and is far too quick for him. While he is trying to make the point that although Lennie has
George, he is all alone, he enjoys tormenting Lennie Crooks face lighted with pleasure in his torture.
(Steinbeck, 1937, p75). Perhaps this was one of the few opportunities he had to sharpen his mind, and
he seized it. However, he was quick enough to realise the danger when Lennie was upset and backed
down immediately. This was undoubtedly self preservation, as Lennie was a big man whom had
recently mangled Curley s hand, but he may have realised he had gone too far and wanted to rectify
the situation. Steinbeck uses Crooks conversation with Lennie as a means for Crooks to vocalise his
position. Lennie asks why he is not welcome in the bunk room and Crooks is aware of the fact he has
to spell it out for Lennie (and the reader) and replies Cause I m black. They play cards in there, but I
can t play because I m black. (Steinbeck, 1937, p72) This illustrates the rejection Crooks receives on a
daily basis. During his conversation with Lennie and later Candy, who subsequently joins them, it is

Dora Maar s Bust Of A Woman
Pablo Picasso s muse of almost ten years, Dora Maar, was depicted many times throughout his
paintings and sculptures (Riding). In his 1941 oil on canvas painting, Bust of a Woman (Dora Maar),
Picasso looked to his muse once again for inspiration. Neither one of Picasso s most famous, nor best
paintings, Bust of a Woman still tells a story of the time and place of a tumultuous artist muse
relationship encapsulated by Picasso s surrealist expression in Nazi occupied France during World
War II. On its face, Bust of a Woman appears secular Dora Maar is not obviously representative of any
sort of entity. However, Picasso did place her on a pedestal for a time and I wonder if he intentionally
back lit her, painting the light around her head and hair to depict a light aura or halo effect (Picasso).
In the top left corner of the room, the diagonal lines look like a spotlight in motion, beaming down
upon her while drawing attention to this somewhat negative space (Picasso). Behind Dora Maar, the
three walls and ceiling are reminiscent of Picasso s earlier cubism spacial ... Show more content on

Although I love the throw back to his blue period with the beautiful, swirling lines of her bodice and
the checkered skirt, I do not think that this is the best example of surrealism. Honestly, it seemed like
Picasso was rushed towards the end (I am assuming that her left hand on the right side of the painting
was the last thing that he painted, but I could be wrong). The light is different, the lines along the
outside of the hand are not crisp and it even appears as if the paint is running a bit something that such
a deliberate artist would seem to notice (Picasso). The right hand is nice with the pinkish beige upside
down V formation between the blues of the other fingers that depict strength (Picasso). Maybe he was
trying to make her left hand appear as if it was reaching out towards the viewer, but it still looks too

opposing viewpoints to the controversial topic of human activities effects on the oceans and its

outputs of media that have different points of view and it can be extraordinarily difficult in deciding
which opinion to agree with and which experts seem the most credible (9). With so many concepts,
various articles, and so much research out there it is hard to get a strong informed opinion about how

opinion of the average reader by supplying opposing views in articles about the topic written by
credible people. According to Louise Gerdes all of the articles used in Endangered Oceans: Opposing

Alternative Dispute Resolution In Court Cases
An Alternative Dispute Resolution not only is beneficial in the fact that it s a less expensive procedure
in comparison to filing for a lawsuit but also because it offers a process that is considered to be less
time consuming. A court system that enforces a plaintiff to have an
Alternative Dispute Resolution before proceeding with their lawsuit in court would benefit both the
plaintiff and court system tremendously. This new enforcement of having an Alternative
Dispute Resolution would give plaintiffs the luxury of not having to deal with all the hassles of having

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Telling a...
What are the advantages and disadvantages of telling stories using moving images?
The overall objective and purpose of telling a story is to engage with the audience to convey the
meaning of a plot and create a human connection on an emotional level (Batty p292). Stories can be
told in a variety of ways, and the method by which a story/narrative is told determines the way in
which we connect and interact with it emotionally. Each mode of story telling is capable of presenting
the same story in different ways. Humans are capable of both understanding and interpreting the
different content and style associated with different modes of story telling.
For the purpose of this essay I contend that a moving image is one that is viewed upon a ... Show more

Without the presence of any dialogue a feeling can be created by the way the camera moves and
reveals what is on screen. Whether this be a pan across the screen, a slow or fast zoom in or out, a
certain perspective shot or a point of view. The way the camera moves, allows the audience to feel a
sense of involvement as if they are part of the action because of the accompanying movement of the
eye following what is happening on screen (Ganz p228).
As Bubb states technology now offers speed and fluidity (p370). In story telling this relates to the pace
at which the information is understood and also the structure in which the information is presented.
When using moving images to tell a story the control over space and time that the storyteller has is
very different to that when telling a story using the written or spoken word. The film Pulp Fiction by
Quentin Tarantino demonstrates the notion of being able to control and manipulate the relation
between space and time very well. It is a film with a complex narrative that has a non linear structure,
where a combination of interlinked stories are told out of order, yet the flow of the narrative still runs
smoothly and keeps the audience in suspense. The irregular pattern in the film where it fluctuates and
jumps from scene to scene shows a combination of images that are discontinuous moments, rendered
continuous (Ganz 2010 p 229). We have the knowledge that these moments clearly can not

Tower Of Babel
Art Essay
As I walked around the Grohmann Museum s Man at Work collection, I appreciated looking at the
great variety of all of man s work throughout time, and I analyzed the evolution of technology
throughout history. I thought the whole collection depicting man at work throughout history was very
interesting and informative. I saw quite a few paintings which interested me and that I could write
about.
The painting I choose to write about is Tower of Babel by Gillis van Vlackenborch. I choose this
painting because, as I walked around the Grohmann Museum and looked at all the paintings, the
Tower of Babel caught my eye by being a very large, detailed, and involved painting. The painting

If one were to be alive during the time of the building of the Tower of Babel, this painting may very
well be what it could have looked like to someone. The painting is extremely detailed and each time
you look at it, you can notice some new details. This painting depicts lots of people working hard to
finish building the Tower of Babel. You can see everyone in the painting working extremely hard
except the small group of people in the far right corner. In the right corner of the painting there
appears to be an architect or engineer holding a scroll with a picture of the tower on it. The guy next to
him might be someone important because he is wearing some type of fancy hat and he is the only one
in in the whole painting who is overweight. The main focus of the painting is obviously the Tower of
Babel. The tower is very large and in the middle of the painting so when you look at it your attention
is immediately drawn to the tower. The painting doesn t have a great variety of color in it. Most of the
colors are red or brown. The whole painting is pretty dark except the sun trying to peak through the
clouds in the upper right hand corner of the painting. There seems to be a slightly inclined road the
spirals up to the top of the tower. My best guess for them building the tower with this inclined spiral
road is for the easy transportation of building supplies and materials to the top of the

Maslow s Hierarchy consists of five levels: Physiological needs, safety needs, love and Belonging,
Esteem, and Self actualization. Maslow believed that no level could be skipped and only from the

Death Of Romeo And Juliet Essay
The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is the tale of two desperate lovers, at
antithetical ends of a violent feud, whose love affair meets a tragic end. But to what extent are these
two lovers responsible for their own downfall or are they merely victims of harsh fate? Whilst Romeo
and Juliet play a crucial role in the generation of their own demise, there are also a variety of external
features that equally influence the hapless fate of the two star cross d lovers.
One of the most consequential of the external influences that prompted the demise of the fervent love
affair is the violent feud between the lovers families. Romeo and Juliet were born into opposing sides
of the violent vendetta and fell profoundly in love ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A connection between the haste of the marriage of Romeo and Juliet can be linked back to the
contractual marriage of Juliet to Paris as arranged by her parents and the deaths of both Tybalt and
Mercutio. Juliet s impending marriage to Paris forces the lovers to rush into vows of their own, basing
their decision solely on their desires and without heed or consideration of the consequences. Similarly,
the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio compels the pair to once again act in haste. Juliet is caught
between her love of Romeo and grievance over Tybalt s death at the hands of her lover, whilst Romeo
is banished from Verona. Both these external features rush the lovers into somewhat dangerous and
irrational decisions, with the urgency of their affair contributing to the lack of consideration of the
peril they could face. The fraught circumstances further build on the already intense emotions of the
lovers, denying them the privilege of a normal relationship and pointing to a disaster for the
impassioned pair. Therefore, the actions of Juliet s parents and the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio,
inflames the lovers emotions and causes them to rush their relationship. This pressures them into
making irrational and perilous decsions and leads them to a poignant

Great War Dbq Essay
There were many underlying causes of the Great War, one of the primary reasons was the creation of
alliances between countries. Another reason, which was helped by the alliances, was the fact that
Serbia killed the Austria Hungary archduke, causing the two of them to go to war. Altogether many
people in the world were excited to go to war, wanting to prove how strong their country is and
thinking it would be a quick war.
Even before the war started there were plotting and alliances made. Germany, Austria Hungary, and
Italy made the triple alliance (Doc D), and the United Kingdom, France, and Russia formed the Triple
Entente (Doc D). If another country would attack one of the countries in one of these alliances the
other countries would employ all their forces to help, beginning an all out battle (Doc E). Along with
this because they were thriving so well due to imperialism, many countries decided to build up their
military to make sure they stayed strong (Doc L).
The alliances were made in part to protect Serbia and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the conflict with Austria Hungary and Serbia Germany saw how, because Russia supported
Serbia, war was almost impossible to avoid (Doc M). They believed it was better to go to war now
rather than latter and get it over with, seen in the quote I believe war is unavoidable and the sooner the
better. by German general, General von Moltke. It was official saying like this that drove the countries
to war, creating a great deal of nationalism, many even cheering (Doc C) when they were told they
were going to war. Some saw war better than just waiting for it, however when spirits dropped during
the war the nations attempted to keep the countries excited with propaganda like songs and posters
(Doc H) and it worked, keeping people eager for war. They wanted to win the war for the working
class, sacrificing many soldiers to the battle (Doc

Censorship In Libraries
Everyone had their own opinions and views that they follow or believe in. Censorship can be used to
protect or enforce those opinions and views. Although, one persons beliefs might not agree with
another person and could cause conflict. Censorship in libraries is important so that respect is shown
to all its users. I believe materials promoting sexual content or drug/alcohol should be censored from
libraries. Libaries should censor materials containing inappropriate sexual content.Material that
promotes sexual actions should be censored, they are inappropriate and can cause conflict. Romance
genres can be accepted because they tell a story and some people enjoy reading these types of books.

Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
Title:
Clinical approach to a case of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (Investigations, management and
complications).
Introduction:
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is a number of autosomal recessive disorders, it is due to mutations of
enzymes responsible for adrenal steroidogenesis. Deficiency of 21 hydroxylase enzyme is the most
common form of CAH, responsible for about more than 90% of the cases. This limits the ability of
adrenal glands to produce the vital hormones cortisol and aldosterone. The absence of these hormones
causes the body to produce excessive androgen which can cause ambiguous genitalia in female
patients.[]

The Battle of Normandy
The Battle of Normandy WWII was a very brutal war, but The Battle of Normandy changed it for us.
This was the turning point in the war. To prepare for this fight the Allies decided to increase the air
strikes and bombings to slow down the German army, who had been trying to take over France at the
time. This battle was set for June 5th, but actually took place on June 6, 1944 at exactly 6:30 a.m,
when the weather was supposed to be the calmest, and ended on June 30, 1944. The Allies wanted to
end Hitler s dream of Nazi denomination (www.dday.org). This invasion is known as one of the largest
and amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. (www.history.com). The
Allies decided that they wanted to trick the Germans into thinking that they were going to land
somewhere else north of Normandy, which made it a surprise attack. Hitler decided to put his troops
more up North because that s where he believed the Allies were going to land. Not only were the
beaches raided, but concentration camps as well. Led by the US Army General Dwight D. Eisenhowet,
the infantries landed and mainly targeted a 50 mile stretch of Normandy. The Americans landed at
Utah and Omaha. The Canadians and British headed for Gold, Juno, and Sword. The army consisted
of 50,000 vehicles, 6,000 ships, and 11,000 planes. Paratroopers and gliders had already landed behind

The Relationship Between Democracy And Civility
Author Ken Burns (2011) describes the relationship between democracy and civility when he said, But
civility is essential to our ability as a nation to confront together difficult issues, even when we may
disagree, and to continue to improve as a country (National Constitution Center, 2011). Democracy
and civility go hand in hand; without democracy, there wouldn t be civility and without civility there
wouldn t be democracy. In a democracy, the model of dissent should be deliberation, yet the long and
careful debate we once had has shifted towards violent measures to fulfill one s own needs. The model
of dissent has transformed from deliberation to violence due impart, to the technological

Albert Bandura, a renowned psychologist, studied how some behaviors are learned through imitation.
He calls this the social learning theory. It is exemplified in his classic experiment called the Bobo Doll
Experiment. The children participating in the experiment were individually shown into a room with
toys and then played with them for 10 minutes while either, 1) 24 children (12 girls and 12 boys)
watched a male or female model behaving aggressively toward a toy called a Bobo Doll . The adults
attacked the Bobo doll in a distinctive manner, either punching or kicking and in some cases using a
hammer. 2) Another 24 children were exposed to a non aggressive model who played in a quiet and
subdued manner for 10 minutes. 3) The final 24 children were used as a control group and were not
exposed to any model at all (McLeod, 2011). In order to study whether these three situations had a
different effect on the children, the experimenter subjected all the children to mild aggression arousal
(McLeod, 2011) by taking each child separately to a room with toys. Once the child began to play
with the toys, the experimenter told the child that these were the experimenter s best toys and she had
decided to reserve them for the other children (McLeod, 2011). The experimenter then brought the
child into the next room, which had some aggressive toys, such as a toy hammer, and some non
aggressive toys. For twenty minutes the child s

Louisana Clean Air Act Essay
For this research paper, I chose to discuss the Louisiana air quality and its effects on the community. I
was raised here in Baker, Louisiana which is north of Baton Rouge. Growing up I noticed something
very striking and odd. We are overly exposed to chemical plants and their outputs. Driving around
Baton Rouge at night and seeing a distant flame I often wonder what it really was. I wonder how this
was affecting the community. How was this affecting our health? Upon doing research, I discovered it
is called upset emissions. Upset emissions are unplanned events which release VOCs into the air. The

adventure. They learn from the attack that no one is guaranteed life, and life can be short. There are
clear contrast and comparison between these two individuals connected to their observation of God. In

Franklin, stated, I had been religiously educated , I seldom attended any public Worship (562).
Franklin formed his own fate in relation with his belief. The ideas he mission were righteousness,
justice and belief that happiness may be found in worldly values. I believe both individual were
establishing an identity free from the native land, although Rowlandson was taking away. In Franklin s
Autobiography, he was seeking to establish a new identity for the new world. This parallels
Rowlandson in that she at the end of her captivity has evolved into a new person. Although
Rowlandson has placed her fate more in God s hand. Franklin suggested that man controls his own
destiny but also makes reference throughout to God. I believe he must deal with his excessive pride,
even as Rowlandson has dealt with her own vanity.
Despite the cultural differences I learned a lot about Rowlandson and Franklin s time. The
Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin was not an easy book to read. Benjamin Franklin was a
remarkable man. He was a printer, author, politician and an inventor (PECO). Because of Franklins,
this essay is being written about one of the men responsible for America s success today. The captivity
narratives of Rowlandson served to define goodness and women s proper devotion to their religion,
and to give a religious message about the value of faith in times of harsh conditions. The belief of
Rowlandson and Franklin in God did help to form our

The Hidden Driver Of Excellence
A Summary of Chapters Three and Four in Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence by Daniel
Goleman
(450) Chapter Three: Attention Top and Bottom
In this chapter, Goleman (2015) defines the important differences in the way the brain functions in
order to focus on a particular object or event. The neurological function of the brain defines why there
is a bottom up mind and top down mind that operates when discerning between differing focus
orientation. In this way, Goleman (2015) identifies the bottom up mind as being much faster in
deciphering perceived threats or challenges as an involuntary focus: Faster in brain time...involuntary
and automatic (Goleman 25). In contrast to this faster mindset, Goleman (2015) the top down mind is
much slower, which provides a voluntary attention span that can analyze an event or situation through
focus. In this manner, Goleman (2015) is really talking about the involuntary and voluntary
neurological functions of the brain that identify the differing aspects of focus that a human possesses.
This is an important part of this chapter that allows the reader to understand the brain s ability to
discern between two differing focuses options.
Another important aspects of the bottom up and top down approach that human beings tend to be
reactionary by relying too much on their involuntary focus. Therefore, the bottom up method tends to
be a driving force in concentration, which can be problematic if it is not analyzed and checked

The Sandman
E.T.A. Hoffmann s The Sandman illuminates Freud s theory of the Uncanny. Freud s understanding of
Nathaniel in E.T.A. Hoffmann s The Sandman is that the Nathaniel s madman like actions are the

that a frightful destiny awaits him. His fear focuses on a threatening old man whom he has understood
since infantile to be the Sandman , a monster who takes away the eyes of children who are awake at

In the Uncanny Freud states everything that ought to have remained hidden and secret, and yet comes
to light, (7) Whenever something reminds Nathaniel of the sandman it triggers him to turn into a
madman and he gets lost in his own world. There are different causes that trigger one to go mad.
Freud believes that one of the main sources of uncanny has to do with the idea of one being robbed of
their eyes. Oedipus that mythical lawbreaker was simply carrying out a mitigated for of punishment of
castration. Freud believes Nathaniel was afraid of castration not just loosing his eyes since many
cherish both. Oedipus links with Nathanael, both were afraid of loosing a part of them that they both

the one who protects them and the one that does not want the sandman in the house. my mother,

Juvenile Crime And Juvenile Offenders
Juvenile crime is at its lowest level since 1987, falling 30% between 1994 and 1998.
Therefore it is only fair to acknowledge that the criminal justice system has made tremendous
strides in it s treatment of the typical juvenile offender. For example, there was once a time when
there was no separation between the treatment of both juvenile and adult offenders. Meanwhile
today we have separate courts for juveniles and adults which I feel is a step in the right direction
because it enforces the reality that a child s mind is different from that of an adult. I feel that the
separation is very important because it does a lot to protect the privacy of a child versus that of
an adult offender. Another example of the strides our justice system has made in recent years to
improve the treatment of juvenile offender is the fact that juvenile offenders do not have to
experience facilities such as the Houses of Refuge, which was the norm in the earlier days of
juvenile justice and crime.
It is my belief that juvenile crime is not caused single handedly by the youth themselves,
I feel that there are mitigating factors that play a huge role in this societal issue. The reason is
because of the fact that they are children at the end of the day, and a child only controls so much
of their day to day. For example, it is no secret that education is a not a priority as far as
government funding, which results in the revelation that the cost of higher education is

However, George Washington provided a common defense and maintained domestic tranquility. Take
the Whiskey Rebellion for example, farmers revolted against a tax passed by Congress and it did not
end well. As stated in America: The History of Our Nation, Some Pennsylvania farmers who were
against the tax started a violent protest. Washington sent federal troops to Pennsylvania, showing that
armed rebellion would not be accepted. The reason for this rebellion was because of the tax Congress
put on whiskey made and sold in the country, which is why it is called the Whiskey Rebellion. This
uprising tested the will of the new government, however Washington s forceful response showed
Americans that armed rebellion was not acceptable in a republic. Furthermore, when Washington left
office, in his farewell address he made two major points. Firstly, he warned against political divisions,
he feared that violent divisions might tear the nation apart. Secondly, he stated that the United States
should not get entangled in foreign affairs. Probably because if they did interfere in foreign affairs the
citizens of the United States may support different sides, which would create issues within the country
that might tear it apart. These points contribute to the fact that Washington maintained domestic
tranquility and provided common

Animal Cruelty And Its Effects On Society
For years, animals have been a form of entertainment whether it has been in movies, shows, circuses,
or for a romantic night out. Most families love this type of entertainment because it is kid friendly and
believe it is cool to watch animals do all kinds of tricks. But do they ever wonder what really goes on
behind closed doors? Entertainment animals have had to endure a lot of pain, depression, and torture
in the process; aside from that not all of them have that happy ending. No one enjoys pain, this
includes humans and animals, and so no one should have be force to go through it. Each year
hundreds of animals die from animal cruelty. Animals used for entertainment have to endure pain in
various ways this can be anything from being whipped to being electrocuted. Animals have no way of
saying STOP, stop hurting me all they can do is make noise but most handlers choose to ignore the
cries or enjoy the sound of it. While one is out trying to impress their significant other, they get on a
carriage because they think it is romantic, but do they stop to think that maybe the horse does not
enjoy pulling them around town. Horse drawn carriages have died each year from heat strokes,
inhaling exhaust fumes, and leg problems. Countless other incidents have occurred in which humans
and horses were involved, especially in the city; many of which humans were at fault either for
driving carelessly or impatiently. The local animal control officials are the ones who are supposed to

  • 2. True Grit Coming Of Age Quotes People do not give it credence that a fourteen year old girl could leave home and go off in the wintertime to avenge her father s blood. (Portis 11) And many people still do not imagine that a story like that is even close to being realistic. Even though, True Grit is fictional; it seemed real as the reader saw Mattie Ross came of age. Coming of age is the transition from youth to adulthood. Throughout the novel, True Grit, the protagonist, Mattie Ross, develops courage, common sense, and bravery as she comes of age from her experience of hunting down the man who murdered her father. The fourteen year old faced many challenges that marked the growth of her maturity. For the duration of the novel, Mattie Ross was gaining courage as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I said, If you refuse to go I will have to shoot you. He went on with his work and said, Oh? Then you had better cock your piece. I had forgotten about that. I pulled the hammer back with both thumbs. All the way back till it locks, said Chaney. I know how to do it, said I. When it was ready I said, You will not go with me? I think not, said he. It is just the other way around. You are going with me. I pointed the revolver at his belly and shot him down. Over the course of this passage, Mattie s confidence grows. She started out nervous with running into Tom Chaney but in the discussion, she decides to shoot him. This passage shows the reader just how much Mattie has grown. When Rooster killed Moon, Mattie was extremely uncomfortable with that death but now she had grown to the point where she tried to murder a man. Well, it was not just a random man. It was her father s murderer. Although this was the whole point of the journey; it still reveals development in her character. In the beginning, she expected Rooster to shoot Tom Chaney but now Mattie had become ready to kill her father s slaughterer. The whole novel prepared for this moment; the moment where Mattie finally stood up to the man who single handedly blew up her life. This passage was probably the most momentous part of the book since it was when Mattie was able to hold her own to get her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Why Enron Became A Middle Man Company With the changing of the economy in the late 1990s, as the old millennium was ending and the new one beginning, one particular company discovered a new way to rise to the top in the trading business. Enron, originally known as a natural gas pipeline company [started by Kenneth Lay in 1985], soon became known as an energy trading corporation that bought and sold gas as well as electricity. (Fox, 1). With over 20,000 employees and 40 worldwide businesses, The Houston, TX Corporation soon became a prodigy of the times. Originally it made its profit by promising to deliver a particular amount of gas to certain businesses at market price on particular days. (O Harrow Jr.). Soon, Enron became a middle man company, placing it between buyers and sellers and making money off of the difference between the selling and buying prices. Their books were kept closed to each opposing party, making Enron the only one to know both prices. (O Harrow Jr.). After entering many complex and intense contracts, the corporation entered into business with Arthur Andersen, an accounting firm who handled Enron s auditing. (Fox, 6). Enron had complex services and high rising stocks. At the top of the game, Enron was a company worth about $70 billion; its stocks were trading at a rate of $90 a share, and seemed indestructible. Explanation of how Enron worked with the idea of supply and demand (Phoenix) Enron s muddy details In mid 1999, Enron s chief CFO, Andrew Fastow, set up two partnerships ... • 4. Write About the Ways in Which Steinbeck Presents Either... Write about the ways in which Steinbeck presents either Crooks or Curley s wife. To what extent does he create sympathy for either of these characters? Of Mice and Men is set in 1930 s America in the middle of the economic depression. It is geared towards the pursuit of the American dream, promoting the ideas of equality, life, liberty and happiness. Steinbeck uses Crooks, and to some extent Curley s wife to challenge the perception of equality and sometimes the language used is, by modern standards, racist and misogynistic. There is an irony in the fact that the people judging Crooks are less intelligent than he is and they refuse to look at anything other than the stereotype of his ethnicity. Steinbeck reveals as much about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Lennie first enters, Crooks is at first defensive as he is not used to visitors invading his personal space. He then realises he can have some fun with Lennie, who is nowhere near his intellectual equal and Crooks reveals a slightly sadistic streak. He metaphorically, dances all over the slow witted Lennie and is far too quick for him. While he is trying to make the point that although Lennie has George, he is all alone, he enjoys tormenting Lennie Crooks face lighted with pleasure in his torture. (Steinbeck, 1937, p75). Perhaps this was one of the few opportunities he had to sharpen his mind, and he seized it. However, he was quick enough to realise the danger when Lennie was upset and backed down immediately. This was undoubtedly self preservation, as Lennie was a big man whom had recently mangled Curley s hand, but he may have realised he had gone too far and wanted to rectify the situation. Steinbeck uses Crooks conversation with Lennie as a means for Crooks to vocalise his position. Lennie asks why he is not welcome in the bunk room and Crooks is aware of the fact he has to spell it out for Lennie (and the reader) and replies Cause I m black. They play cards in there, but I can t play because I m black. (Steinbeck, 1937, p72) This illustrates the rejection Crooks receives on a daily basis. • 5. Dora Maar s Bust Of A Woman Pablo Picasso s muse of almost ten years, Dora Maar, was depicted many times throughout his paintings and sculptures (Riding). In his 1941 oil on canvas painting, Bust of a Woman (Dora Maar), Picasso looked to his muse once again for inspiration. Neither one of Picasso s most famous, nor best paintings, Bust of a Woman still tells a story of the time and place of a tumultuous artist muse relationship encapsulated by Picasso s surrealist expression in Nazi occupied France during World War II. On its face, Bust of a Woman appears secular Dora Maar is not obviously representative of any sort of entity. However, Picasso did place her on a pedestal for a time and I wonder if he intentionally back lit her, painting the light around her head and hair to depict a light aura or halo effect (Picasso). In the top left corner of the room, the diagonal lines look like a spotlight in motion, beaming down upon her while drawing attention to this somewhat negative space (Picasso). Behind Dora Maar, the three walls and ceiling are reminiscent of Picasso s earlier cubism spacial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although I love the throw back to his blue period with the beautiful, swirling lines of her bodice and the checkered skirt, I do not think that this is the best example of surrealism. Honestly, it seemed like Picasso was rushed towards the end (I am assuming that her left hand on the right side of the painting was the last thing that he painted, but I could be wrong). The light is different, the lines along the outside of the hand are not crisp and it even appears as if the paint is running a bit something that such a deliberate artist would seem to notice (Picasso). The right hand is nice with the pinkish beige upside down V formation between the blues of the other fingers that depict strength (Picasso). Alternative Dispute Resolution In Court Cases An Alternative Dispute Resolution not only is beneficial in the fact that it s a less expensive procedure in comparison to filing for a lawsuit but also because it offers a process that is considered to be less time consuming. A court system that enforces a plaintiff to have an Alternative Dispute Resolution before proceeding with their lawsuit in court would benefit both the plaintiff and court system tremendously. This new enforcement of having an Alternative Dispute Resolution would give plaintiffs the luxury of not having to deal with all the hassles of having to go to court. • 11. What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Telling a... What are the advantages and disadvantages of telling stories using moving images? The overall objective and purpose of telling a story is to engage with the audience to convey the meaning of a plot and create a human connection on an emotional level (Batty p292). Stories can be told in a variety of ways, and the method by which a story/narrative is told determines the way in which we connect and interact with it emotionally. Each mode of story telling is capable of presenting the same story in different ways. Humans are capable of both understanding and interpreting the different content and style associated with different modes of story telling. For the purpose of this essay I contend that a moving image is one that is viewed upon a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without the presence of any dialogue a feeling can be created by the way the camera moves and reveals what is on screen. Whether this be a pan across the screen, a slow or fast zoom in or out, a certain perspective shot or a point of view. The way the camera moves, allows the audience to feel a sense of involvement as if they are part of the action because of the accompanying movement of the eye following what is happening on screen (Ganz p228). As Bubb states technology now offers speed and fluidity (p370). In story telling this relates to the pace at which the information is understood and also the structure in which the information is presented. When using moving images to tell a story the control over space and time that the storyteller has is very different to that when telling a story using the written or spoken word. The film Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino demonstrates the notion of being able to control and manipulate the relation between space and time very well. It is a film with a complex narrative that has a non linear structure, where a combination of interlinked stories are told out of order, yet the flow of the narrative still runs smoothly and keeps the audience in suspense. The irregular pattern in the film where it fluctuates and jumps from scene to scene shows a combination of images that are discontinuous moments, rendered continuous (Ganz 2010 p 229). Tower Of Babel Art Essay As I walked around the Grohmann Museum s Man at Work collection, I appreciated looking at the great variety of all of man s work throughout time, and I analyzed the evolution of technology throughout history. I thought the whole collection depicting man at work throughout history was very interesting and informative. I saw quite a few paintings which interested me and that I could write about. The painting I choose to write about is Tower of Babel by Gillis van Vlackenborch. If one were to be alive during the time of the building of the Tower of Babel, this painting may very well be what it could have looked like to someone. The painting is extremely detailed and each time you look at it, you can notice some new details. This painting depicts lots of people working hard to finish building the Tower of Babel. You can see everyone in the painting working extremely hard except the small group of people in the far right corner. In the right corner of the painting there appears to be an architect or engineer holding a scroll with a picture of the tower on it. The guy next to him might be someone important because he is wearing some type of fancy hat and he is the only one in in the whole painting who is overweight. The main focus of the painting is obviously the Tower of Babel. The tower is very large and in the middle of the painting so when you look at it your attention is immediately drawn to the tower. The painting doesn t have a great variety of color in it. Most of the colors are red or brown. The whole painting is pretty dark except the sun trying to peak through the clouds in the upper right hand corner of the painting. There seems to be a slightly inclined road the spirals up to the top of the tower. My best guess for them building the tower with this inclined spiral road is for the easy transportation of building supplies and materials to the top of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Death Of Romeo And Juliet Essay The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is the tale of two desperate lovers, at antithetical ends of a violent feud, whose love affair meets a tragic end. But to what extent are these two lovers responsible for their own downfall or are they merely victims of harsh fate? Whilst Romeo and Juliet play a crucial role in the generation of their own demise, there are also a variety of external features that equally influence the hapless fate of the two star cross d lovers. One of the most consequential of the external influences that prompted the demise of the fervent love affair is the violent feud between the lovers families. Romeo and Juliet were born into opposing sides of the violent vendetta and fell profoundly in love ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A connection between the haste of the marriage of Romeo and Juliet can be linked back to the contractual marriage of Juliet to Paris as arranged by her parents and the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio. Juliet s impending marriage to Paris forces the lovers to rush into vows of their own, basing their decision solely on their desires and without heed or consideration of the consequences. Similarly, the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio compels the pair to once again act in haste. Juliet is caught between her love of Romeo and grievance over Tybalt s death at the hands of her lover, whilst Romeo is banished from Verona. Both these external features rush the lovers into somewhat dangerous and irrational decisions, with the urgency of their affair contributing to the lack of consideration of the peril they could face. The fraught circumstances further build on the already intense emotions of the lovers, denying them the privilege of a normal relationship and pointing to a disaster for the impassioned pair. Therefore, the actions of Juliet s parents and the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio, inflames the lovers emotions and causes them to rush their relationship. This pressures them into making irrational and perilous decsions and leads them to a poignant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Hidden Driver Of Excellence A Summary of Chapters Three and Four in Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence by Daniel Goleman (450) Chapter Three: Attention Top and Bottom In this chapter, Goleman (2015) defines the important differences in the way the brain functions in order to focus on a particular object or event. The neurological function of the brain defines why there is a bottom up mind and top down mind that operates when discerning between differing focus orientation. In this way, Goleman (2015) identifies the bottom up mind as being much faster in deciphering perceived threats or challenges as an involuntary focus: Faster in brain time...involuntary and automatic (Goleman 25). In contrast to this faster mindset, Goleman (2015) the top down mind is much slower, which provides a voluntary attention span that can analyze an event or situation through focus. In this manner, Goleman (2015) is really talking about the involuntary and voluntary neurological functions of the brain that identify the differing aspects of focus that a human possesses. This is an important part of this chapter that allows the reader to understand the brain s ability to discern between two differing focuses options. • 33. Juvenile Crime And Juvenile Offenders Juvenile crime is at its lowest level since 1987, falling 30% between 1994 and 1998. Therefore it is only fair to acknowledge that the criminal justice system has made tremendous strides in it s treatment of the typical juvenile offender. For example, there was once a time when there was no separation between the treatment of both juvenile and adult offenders. Meanwhile today we have separate courts for juveniles and adults which I feel is a step in the right direction because it enforces the reality that a child s mind is different from that of an adult. I feel that the separation is very important because it does a lot to protect the privacy of a child versus that of an adult offender. Another example of the strides our justice system has made in recent years to improve the treatment of juvenile offender is the fact that juvenile offenders do not have to experience facilities such as the Houses of Refuge, which was the norm in the earlier days of juvenile justice and crime. It is my belief that juvenile crime is not caused single handedly by the youth themselves, I feel that there are mitigating factors that play a huge role in this societal issue. The reason is because of the fact that they are children at the end of the day, and a child only controls so much of their day to day. For example, it is no secret that education is a not a priority as far as government funding, which results in the revelation that the cost of higher education is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During his period in office, Washington established justice, insured domestic tranquility, provided for the common defense and promoted general welfare. However, George Washington provided a common defense and maintained domestic tranquility. Take the Whiskey Rebellion for example, farmers revolted against a tax passed by Congress and it did not end well. As stated in America: The History of Our Nation, Some Pennsylvania farmers who were against the tax started a violent protest. Washington sent federal troops to Pennsylvania, showing that armed rebellion would not be accepted. The reason for this rebellion was because of the tax Congress put on whiskey made and sold in the country, which is why it is called the Whiskey Rebellion. This uprising tested the will of the new government, however Washington s forceful response showed Americans that armed rebellion was not acceptable in a republic. Furthermore, when Washington left office, in his farewell address he made two major points. Firstly, he warned against political divisions, he feared that violent divisions might tear the nation apart. Secondly, he stated that the United States should not get entangled in foreign affairs. Probably because if they did interfere in foreign affairs the citizens of the United States may support different sides, which would create issues within the country that might tear it apart. These points contribute to the fact that Washington maintained domestic tranquility and provided common ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Most families love this type of entertainment because it is kid friendly and believe it is cool to watch animals do all kinds of tricks. But do they ever wonder what really goes on behind closed doors? Entertainment animals have had to endure a lot of pain, depression, and torture in the process; aside from that not all of them have that happy ending. No one enjoys pain, this includes humans and animals, and so no one should have be force to go through it. Each year hundreds of animals die from animal cruelty. Animals used for entertainment have to endure pain in various ways this can be anything from being whipped to being electrocuted. Animals have no way of saying STOP, stop hurting me all they can do is make noise but most handlers choose to ignore the cries or enjoy the sound of it. While one is out trying to impress their significant other, they get on a carriage because they think it is romantic, but do they stop to think that maybe the horse does not enjoy pulling them around town. Horse drawn carriages have died each year from heat strokes, inhaling exhaust fumes, and leg problems. Countless other incidents have occurred in which humans and horses were involved, especially in the city; many of which humans were at fault either for driving carelessly or impatiently. The local animal control officials are the ones who are supposed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
