Differences And Similarities Between Pulitzer And Joseph...
In America the President reigns for four years, and journalism governs for ever and ever. Oscar
Wilde never spoke truer words. The aforementioned ability to govern for ever and ever comes from
journalistic sensationalism, a craft perfected by newspaper owners and journalists Joseph Pulitzer
and William Randolph Hearstat the dawn of the twentieth century. Sensationalism counts for only
one of the numerous ties between the career rivals who, in an effort to distinguish themselves from
each other, ironically knotted themselves together in journalism history. Joseph Pulitzeremigrated to
the United States of America from Hungary at the age of seventeen and subsequently joined the
Union army of the U.S. Civil War. After the war, Carl

Helped in large part by owning an established newspaper fresh out of college, Hearst worked his
way up the small portion of proverbial ladder Hearst had yet to climb in the journalism world by
purchasing The New York Morning Journal. Coincidentally, Hearst purchased The New York
Morning Journal from Pulitzer s soon to be estranged brother Albert (Therkelsen 7) and renamed
the paper The Journal ( William, Sidelights). Hearst s first took his first notorious step with his
pilfering of all of Pulitzer s editorial staff at the New York World, followed by Pulitzer s rehiring,
and Hearst s second theft of the same journalists (Contemporary, Joseph ). Pulitzer, as the originator
of the colorful comics section in newspapers, made sure to keep The Yellow Kid comic strip in the
New York World newspaper despite losing the original designer in Pulitzer s continuing battle with
Hearst (Squires). The fact that the battle went deep enough into the newspapers to affect the comics
section helped historians coin the term yellow journalism as an idiom for how Hearst and Pulitzer
ran their respective newspapers (Therkelsen 7). This immature feud between the two grown men
may sound harmless, but accusations surfaced suggesting this quarrel may have caused the Spanish
American War. Without any official word from government organizations, Hearst and Pulitzer both
published unconfirmed sensationalistic

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Last Lecture By Randy Pausch
Randy Pausch s The Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams was given on September
18th, 2007, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Randy made his goal of the speech not
more than five minutes in, stating the importance of achieving your childhood dreams. The
language he is using is very formal, and he appeals to the audience by making several references
to common things such as movies, and a humorous quote after he states his current condition, I
m in better shape than most of you! as he proceeds doing pushups on stage. In various points in
his speech, he is speaking to certain individuals in the audience about things pertaining to his
story, and how he achieved some of his childhood dreams with the help of others. Randy really
hit it off with everybody, and made the speech untimely, so that anybody at any point in time can
view his speech and wonder is this still relevant? Near the closing of his speech, he states that he
wasn t giving to speech for everybody in the audience; he was giving the speech for his children,
as he wouldn t be around for them growing up. At several points in his speech he makes
references to common things and statistics, such as MacBook s and how few people have one. At
other points he referenced things such as Steve Jobs + Wozniak in their garage, as him and his
team build his VR setup for under $5,000.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sometimes, at some points, his story involves somebody who is in the audience, and he points
them out and they converse about something in particular, such as part of the story. This way of
speaking allows for the audience to think Hey, I could be one of the people he is speaking to; I
could have done some of these amazing things! This works perfectly for Randy s goal in the speech
getting the audience to achieve their childhood

Juxtaposition In Bless Me Ultima
Bright white light of the New Mexico sun bathes and protects the small town of Guadalupe. Like
his parents and older brothers before him, young Antonio struggles to find his true inner self as his
parents push two family names on him. In Anaya Rudolfo s novel Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio is
ultimately a mixture between a Marez and a Luna, as seen through the juxtaposition between the
symbols of the moonand the sea, as well as Godand the Golden Carp. The moon that represents the
Luna family, and sea which connects to the Marez, are forces which push Antonio to make his final
decision about family. In the beginning, Antonio tries his hardest to please both of his parents by
combining their dissimilar ideas about his future. Although Antonio begins his life thinking he is a
mixture of both parents heritage, the juxtaposition of the symbols in the book changes his mind on
that, It is the blood of the Lunas to be quiet... They are quiet like the moon And it is the blood of
the MГЎrez to be wild, like the ocean from which they take their name (Anaya 41). Aside from
the obvious fact that the Spanish word for moon is, in fact, Luna, that family represents the
moon. The calmness of said moon contrasts with the wild men of the sea. Maria is controlling of
her family, similar to how the moon controls the sea. Each contrasting idea propels Antonio in
separate directions either towards the Luna priests or the Marez vaqueros. Despite the fact that
his mother wants to make a priest out of Antonio, the other side of his family thinks in their own
unique way, He is a Marez... His forefathers were conquistadors, men as restless as the seas they
sailed (Anaya 6). Once again, the contrary sides of Antonio s family pull him to the sea instead of
the moon. The true struggle Antonio goes through is choosing his own destiny, even with the
strong influences of both the moon and sea. Suddenly he has a moment of realization and tells his
uncle, I am Marez, ... That is right, you are a Marez first, then Luna (Anaya 250). Even though he
may think he is Marez first, he still lives with Luna blood coursing through his veins. After all, he
skipped a grade, which makes him a boy of learning. Then again, his adoration of nature proves

Clara Barton
I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I
can stand and feed and nurse them. A quote by Clara Barton, American civil war nurse and
founder of the American National Red Cross (Lewis). By many, Clara is said to be The Angel of
The Battlefield , how does one acquire such a title (Allen)? Through her family life, her efforts
providing relief to soldiers on the front lines, and her work with the international and american red
cross, she earned the title of The Angel of the Battlefield (Clara Barton).
December 25, 1821, Clara Barton was brought into this world in North Oxford, Massachusetts.
Her father worked as not only a farmer but also as a state lawmaker. He even served in the
American Revolution (Allen). One of Clara s most famous quotes The patriot blood of my
father was warm in my veins (Lewis) illustrates her dedication to the patriot cause, likely brought
upon by her father s influence. Her mother, Sarah, was responsible for urging Clara to become a
teacher due to how well spoken and well read she was at such a young age (Clara Barton
Biography). At the age of eleven, Clara says that she was given the task of caring for and looking
after her brother who had fallen in. In exchange for her aid and care, Clara s brother taught her

Theme Of Corruption In Animal Farm
George Orwell the author of Animal Farm and Barry Levinson director of the Cinematic
production Wag the Dog both explore in their texts the corruption of society. Various key ideas are
explored to expose Corruption and highlight how powers use manipulation and half truths to gain
and retain control. To make their ideas prudent to the audience, Orwell and Levinson make use of
various literary and filmic techniques, most prominent of these in both texts is the use of Irony.
These texts influence the audience directly to consider the potential foley of human forms of
governance which is timely to society in our day.
The Author George Orwell and the Directer Barry Levinson express in their texts Animal Farm and
Wag the Dog an exploration into corruption. Orwell depicts Animal farm s fall into corruption
through the narrative perspective of the working animals where as Levinson exposes the already
set corruption through a narrative perspective of the fixers. This third person limited perspective
allows the irony in the texts to build as the story progresses, because each plot point is viewed
from one side thus information has a greater impact and tension when revealed. Irony, can be no
better applied, when a free country like America has it s voting manipulated to keep unjust leaders
in power. This is best stated one hour and eighteen minutes into the film when Winifred Ames is

Metaphors As A Metaphor
Morgan s metaphors personified: Auto bot a new way of understanding and theorizing about the
organizations Theories are built from abstractions known as concepts. Metaphors have long been in
use to describe organizations and development of organizational theory. In order to understand
abstract concepts, it is of fundamental importance to know how metaphor works. Different scholars
within the field of organizational research have acknowledged this (e.g. Morgan 1980; Weick 1989;
Cornelissen 2005; Putman Boys 2006). Within the field of linguistics, probably no phenomenon has
been as well researched as metaphor (Steen 2007). Research shows that for language users, it is
inevitable to use metaphor when dealing with abstract concepts. Metaphors therefore play a key
role in the construction of reality (Lakoff Johnson 1999). Use of metaphors always has limitations
which are mentioned by Gareth Morgan the Author of the famous classic book on organizational
theory, images of organization . While introducing the famous eight metaphors used for developing
organizational theories he mentions that metaphors help explain, but they also distort. They have...

Outlining the Overall Structure Ofocial Care Sector Essay...
Part 1 P2 (500 words) Outlining the overall structure of the social care sector. Social Care
services sector s role is to deliver social care systems which offer care equality for all individuals,
while allowing people to retain their independence, dignity and control. During the past 20 years
the need for social care services in the UK slightly increased. This is mainly due to demographic
factors such as an increasing aging population. Therefore this means that more care and
residential care homes are needed. Also, a number of women with small children, who decided to
come back to work, is growing. This means that there is a need for new nursery and pre schools,
which would look after the children. Britain has a mixed economy of care... Show more content on

They are often those who fill the gap which was left by other sectors. They usually concentrate
more on social care rather than on health sector e.g. their role is to help poor people in need.
Examples of them are: Red Cross, Oxfam, and British Heart Foundation. Social Care services
can be accessed by using referrals. There are 3 different types of referrals: self referral,
professional referral and third party referral, each of them involves different process. Self
referral is when individuals suspects by themselves that they have some problems with their
social issues. Therefore, they self refer to a social care specialist in order to receive the help and
support that they need. Professional referral is when a service user already contacted or used
the service; however if the professional suspects any kind of underlying health problem, the
patient will be referred directly to another professional. For example if the social worker
suspects a child abuse in the family, he/she may refer the child to a counsellor or psychologist to
sort out the problem. Third party referral, is when a non professional person such as relative,
friend or neighbour contacts with the services in order to help the individual they know about.
For example the resident of the residential care home may be referred by the home manager to see
a social worker. When an individual is trying to access a social care services she/he may face some
barriers which stops them from

Locke s Second Treatise Of Government
Locke shares a different view of human nature compared to Hobbes. Locke argued human nature is
not a constant war but rather a peaceful state. He views humans as peaceful and rational beings,
ones that can communicate with one another and can live in harmony without the need of a
government authority. Locke believed that people have a knowledge of what he calls the laws of
nature given by God, instructing us not to harm one another in terms of our rights ( Ingersoll,
Matthews, Davison 2010, pg53). Locke explains in his Second Treatise of Government, that the
earth is large enough for the small population it consists of thus there is enough for all. Locke turns
his attention to property and private possessions which result in the need for... Show more content

According to Locke based off his Second Treatise of Government, God gave man common
property for them to turn it into private property (Locke 1980, pg18). However, to legitimately
transfer public property to private property there are three fundamental rules. First, the
individual must mix their labour into it. They must invest their labour into to change it from
being the publics to know being yours. This could mean cultivating land to grow food or picking
an apple from a tree. Second, you must leave as much and as good for others. This implying that
one person cannot claim all the land or take all the apples from one tree. Lastly, the third rule
indicates not to let anything spoil or go to waste. If a person claims land or an apple tree but lets
the apple rot or does not use the land, Locke states how you would lose their claim to that private
possession. With the possession of private property, comes the introduction of money and the
monetary system. Money allows people to become more productive with their land, it gives them
inventive to cultivate their land and sell their products to earn a profit. Money also eliminates the
fear of spoilage because now people have incentive to work and acquire as much as

The Importance Of Indigenous People In Australia
The role and place of Indigenous Australians in perceptions of national identity is generally
neglected. Contemporary issues among Indigenous people in Australia include racial
discrimination, poor health and access to health services, levels of employment and education
(Hampton Toombs, 2013). The traumatic diaspora of the Stolen Generations and the negative
impacts of racial and economic disadvantage such as segregation and displacement have contributed
to Indigenous peoplesfeeling of mistrust (Queensland Health, 2015). According to Kelly (2013), a
fundamental challenge faced by educators today is planning and teaching for a future where the
tragedies of the past are overcome for Indigenous students. This essay views these topics as
interrelated and discusses them in reference to whole school best practice to support teaching
Indigenous students.
In Australia, educational policies at the Commonwealth level have had set expectations for the
inclusion of Indigenous themes in school curricula for more than two decades (Kelly, 2013).
ACARA has a stated intention of ensuring that all young Australians will be given the opportunity
to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories
and cultures , (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2011), yet Lowe

Critical Analysis Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning
The Hopeless Romantic: Elizabeth Barrett Browning
In the poem How do I love thee? by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Browning asks how she loves
her beloved and goes on to list the ways in which she loves him. Her love is seen as eternal and
exists everywhere which brings to light the tone and styling of the poem and how it fits in the
movement it was written in. Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born in 1806 at Coxhoe Hall, Durham,
England. (Poetry Foundation) During the time of her writings, she was seen as one of the most
influential poets for the Romantic Movement. Romantics focused on nature, human feelings and
compassion, and rebelling for a cause, which Browning shows a lot of throughout her sonnet.
Browning was born in 1806 at Coxhoe Hall in Durham, England. She was a romantic writer but
it closely reflected the life she was living at the time. The oldest of twelve children, Elizabeth
was the first in her family born in England in over two hundred years. For centuries, the Barrett
family, who were part Creole, had lived in Jamaica, where they owned sugar plantations and
relied on slave labor. (Poetry Foundation) Elizabeth s father, chose to raise his family in England,
while his fortune grew in Jamaica. Educated at home Elizabeth apparently read passages from
Paradise Lost and a number of Shakespearean plays, among other great works, before the age of
ten. By her twelfth year, she had written her first epic poem, which consisted of four books of
rhyming couplets. In 1826 , Elizabeth anonymously published her collection An Essay on Mind
and Other Poems. Two years later, her mother passed away and the slow abolition of slavery in
England and mismanagement of the plantations depleted the Barrett s income. Elizabeth s father
moved his family to a coastal town and rented cottages for the next three years before settling
permanently in London. Her father did not allow his children to marry, having them work on the
plantations in Jamaica instead. Gaining attention for her work in the 1830s, Elizabeth continued to
live in her father s London house, not by choice however. He began sending Elizabeth s younger
siblings to Jamaica to help with the family s estates. Elizabeth opposed of slavery and did

Freshman Year Transcripts
Transcripts Throughout my four years of high school, my GPAs have been pretty good. Spring
semester of freshman year was by far the best because I managed to end the year with a 4.0.
However, my classes started to get a little more challenging to me and after that semester, my GPAs
started to go down. I would have to say that my worst year was junior year. I ended the year off
with four B s and only three A s. I would definitely have to say that I let my classes get the best of
me that year. Now that it s my senior year, I now know to never let stress interfere with my
grades because it is not worth it. I hope I can achieve my goal of ending the year with a 4.0.

One research summary listed on AHRQ website under patient safety is a device that has potential
in reducing the incidence of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) (Collard Saint, 2010).
Continuous aspiration of subglottic secretions (CASS) is an apparatus that has been shown to
decrease the incidence of VAP in certain patients. Included in this piece is a description of VAP,
how CASS can help improve patients at risk for VAP and a patient care situation regarding clients
receiving mechanical ventilation.
Ventilator Associated Pneumonia
Pneumonia is the second most common hospital acquired infection and is the leading cause of
death due to nosocomial infection in the United States (Augustyn, 2007). A patient who is
intubated with an endotracheal tube (ETT) is at increased risk of developing pneumonia. The
bacteria colonizing the oropharynx can move into the lower respiratory tract because the ETT
provides a direct route into the lower airway (Craven Hjalmarson, 2010). This type of pneumonia
is called ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), it occurs in patients receiving mechanical
ventilation for an extended period of time. Ventilator associated pneumonia can be categorized as
either early onset or late onset. Early onset VAP occurs between 48 to 96 hours and is usually
caused by Haemophilus influenza, an antibiotic sensitive community acquired organisms (Collard

Rape Culture Analysis
Rape culture is the environment in which rape is common and sexual violence against women is
normalized by the media. Rape culture is promoted with the use of misogynistic language, the
objectification of women s bodies, and the glamorization of sexual violence, which creates a
society that ignores the rights and safety of women. In 2013, Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams
released the summer hit Blurred Lines, which became known as a rapesong. Blurred Lines is the
perfect example of how rape culture is used by the media while using misogynistic language,
objectification of women s bodies, and glamorization of sexual violence. Robin Thicke and Pharrell
Williams Blurred Lines uses misogynistic lyrics that promotes rape culture. The first use of
misogynistic language is in the bridge of the song when Thicke sings Tried to domesticate you, But
you re an animal. Thicke is obviously comparing a girl to an animal in this lyric, but he also
mentions that someone tried to domesticate her, which means that they trained to tame which
implies he owns her. The ownership of a womanis a misogynistic way of thinking because people
cannot own other people. Then in the hook of the song Thicke calls the girl a Good girl, which is
very condescending because it sounds like he is speaking down to her. This suggest that he is
superior to her and is asserting his male dominance. In the second verse of the song Thicke sings
You the hottest bitch in this place, which is a

They were three images shown on the artwork. The one on the right hand side was painted with
yellow and green with a light color of pink and red on the chest side which appears more brighter
and coloful. On the other hand, the one on the left hand side was painted with red and pink and a
little green at the feet side which looks more specifically like Egyptian royal traditional way of

that seems like fading into dark brown color. It seems that the concertation of the artist focuses
more on the colors that brings out the beauty of the image. However the visual rhythm and

Monster Clytemnestra In Aeschylus Oresteia
The Monster Clytemnestra in Aeschylus Oresteia
In the three part play Oresteia, Clytemnestra is a character that manipulates, lies, cheats, and
murders. From the very first moment we hear of her existence, we know she is unlike the women
of her time. Oh she s a woman all right, a woman with a man s heart. (11) the watchman in the first
scene of Agamemnon tells the audience. This tells us that she does not act in a way that the
watchman associates with the women around him. Already, in the first few lines of the first
installment of the play, we know that Clytemnestra is different. Throughout the play, Clytemnestra
tries as hard as she can to keep herself on top, stopping at nothing to get what she wants. She
wants to rule the city and she wants to have power over the people in her life. She is power
hungry, manipulative, and determined. This determination is not a good thing for the people
around Clytemnestra. Because of her need for power, she ends up turning on almost everyone
she is supposed to love. This is what leads to her eventual death. Clytemnestra is a dynamic
character, who does everything she can to be on top killing, lying, cheating, and murdering are
just a few of these things. She does not care who she hurts, or what she does to get where she

In Life is Beautiful, the love between two people is a recurring theme. The music, composed by
Italian light classical composer Nicola Piovani, is one of the major factors that helps successfully
convey this theme to the audience.
In the film, the same upbeat tune is used for many of the romantic scenes between Guido and
Dora. This tune, in a more subtle tone, is the theme song for the film, and when it is repeated for
the romantic themes it gives a powerful sense of love. For example, when Dora falls out of that
farm house, and Guido catches her, the music is used for the first time in a romantic setting. The
same music is then repeated in the scene at the 11 minute mark when Guido falls off his bike into
Dora and they both fall over into a big pile of sand. This

First Shot Summary
First Shot is written as a fiction book. This story, like most books, has a deeper meaning that
everybody can relate to: Actions have consequences. The book begins with the main character
David, he s describing everything that has ever gone wrong in his life. He even compares
himself to an appendix. (The most useless of the human organs.) After explaining that David s
father is the Principal of this mysterious rich kid school in Maine, and the town below it is split
by name: Cardnell vs. Jackstaff. Neither side is quite fond of the other. The Cardnells are rich,
and well educated people. While the Jackstaffs are stereotyped to be stupid, and petty criminals.
And, that the only thing David really cares about is shooting. The school has this contest called
First Shot which is where the best shooter gets to fire a single shot at graduation. And that David
s roommate is Garrett Rothenberg who just happens to be the son of the financial manager of the
school. And after Misty arrives. (A new student with a southern accent, and a perfect bullseye.)
David falls head over heels for her, anyway, after all that is explained, the story quickly jumps
into the mystery of David s mother s murder. David believes that his father is responsible for the
death of his mother. Because the small town dismissed the murder to a cold case, David decides to

The Invisible Man Essay
The Invisible Man, by H.G. Wells, is composed of many small themes that combined to form two
major themes in the novel. Some of the minor themes are acting before thinking and denial of
unexplainable events. It is based on the two major themes of science experiments gone wrong and
the ignorance of society.
The most important theme in the novel was the experiment that Griffin, the invisible man, was
working and it was not going exactly as planned. The way that the experiment went bad was not
by accident; instead it was Griffin who had made the mistake of turning himself invisible. The
reason that the invisible man had for becoming invisible was that he was suspected as to be a
vivesectionalist and he did not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The people could see his footprints and see him if he became dirty. Another thing that Griffin did
not realize before his experiment back fired was that he could not eat if he wanted to stay
invisible. The people around him could see the food inside his stomach, until his body absorbed it.
The experiment that Griffin went through was his own fault and also sealed his own fate. The
major problem with his invisibility was that Griffin was not able to keep or have any friends. His
only contact was after he was all bandaged up and looked as though he had been in a bad accident.
Without any human contact or support Griffin was destined to become crazy. In the ending
chapters of the novel it is obvious that Griffin has lost his mind and is completely insane.
Not wanton killing, but a judicious slaying. The point is, they know there is an Invisible Man as
well as we know there is an Invisible Man. And that Invisible Man, Kemp, must now establish a
Reign of Terror. (Pg. 114)
The previous quote was taken as the invisible man was talking to Kemp about his plans of
judicial killing. This proves that Griffin has gone completely insane and it is his way of getting
back at society for excluding him. He does not realize that if he had never made himself invisible
nothing like this would be happening.

How Does Luis Valdez Use Stereotypes In Los Vendidos
Stereotypes are the shackles that keep masses of people unable to be free in the world. One of
the main themes illustrated through the play is the basis of stereotyping in America and how it
has and continues to affect chicanos. Valdez s definition of actos is to inspire others to take social
action , the playwright successfully fulfils his definition through the dialogues and events he
describes. The dehumanizing way that Valdez introduces all of the characters in the play solidifies
the pressure they feel to assimilate and why many resist assimilation. In the play Los Vendidos by
Luis Valdez, the author fulfills his own unique definition of actos in the play by showcasing some
of the stereotypes and prejudices held against Mexican Americans to illustrate the real social

Deterrence And Rational Choice Theory
Throughout the world crime is happening every single day. Yes, some people may feel as if the
deterrence theory does not work. Due to the fact that crime still happens in the world. This essay
will look at the support for the theory. As well as the key problems for the theory. Next, it will
explain some of the newest directions in deterrence/rational choice theory. Finally, it will either
agree/disagree with someone s thought on deterrence and how it does not work and is a waste of
time to study. Deterrence and rational choice are two different things. Deterrence is used to punish
those who disobey and in return help deter others from committing the same crime. While rational
choice is when the individual thinks about the cost and the benefits of them committing this
crime (Cornish and Clarke, text CH 34). Deterrence and rational choice tend to work pretty well
on young adults. For example, if a teenager sees his friends face time in prison for committing an
act of violence. That may deter them from committing the same crime or something similar.
Reason is that they possibly think of the pros and cons of each situation and how the effect it
could have on family. Also where deterrence and rational choice work could not be define. Due to
the fact that judges interpret the law, and do not have a across the board rule and sentencing
guideline to help them make a decision. Deterrence and rational choice does have some problems.
One problem is that there is no way to tell if

Marketing And Branding Of Marketing
There is a large array of theories and rules of branding in marketing literature however not all are
connected to music festivals. Branding of music festivals is a comparatively new area of
marketing as a result of branding being associated with consumer goods (Esu Arrey, 2009).
However with the increase in events, branding is becoming a mu7ch more significant marketing
tool. It is not only beneficial for the partnership between festivals and brands but proper branding
can create a major impact for the region it is held, commonly referred to as the destination. Since
use of the words brandand branding are now commonplace within the English language, it is
sensible to offer a brief explanation of their meaning. Branding is defined differently in many
literatures however the most common definition could be considered that of The American
Marketing Association as A name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one
seller s good or service as distinct from those of other sellers. However in the way I seek to use
the term branding, is between that of Seth Godin the set of expectations, memories, stories and
relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer s decision to choose one product or

In order to upgrade the commuter lounge at Seton Hall, it is important to develop an
implementation plan. Having an implementation plan will help us better understand the steps we
have to take in order to get the ball rolling. The implementation plan will also help us keep track
of where our progress is and what steps we have completed. The implementation plan we created
will have four different components: how we will go about implementing our idea, the steps we
need to follow to implement our idea, who would need to be involved, and the communication of
our plan to others.
The way we will go about implementing our idea is rather simple. In order to upgrade the

community here at Seton Hall. Conducting a school wide survey of all the commuter students
with questions that will target what these students look for in a university being, what the
university is lacking, what they would like to see be improved at Seton Hall, among other
various questions will give us an idea of what to include in the new commuter lounge. This survey

definitely is. Once the need is figured out, we

The Stagnancy In The Lovesong Of J. Alfred Prufrock
Stagnancy is associated with failure, the impossibility of man fulfilling his dreams. In T.S. Eliot s
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Prufrock is a discombobulated character. Stagnancy is
explicitly showcased into the character Prufrock by his idealistic need for perfection and
indecisiveness. Not only does the character become paralyzed throughout the poem, so does his
future. T.S. Eliot uses an obsession with women including ideas like timeand space to comment on
the negative effect stagnancy has on his abilities. By developing an elaborate character, T.S. Eliot is
able to portray the sense of inferiority and fear brought upon him that caused him to hinder his
growth.
Due to Prufrock s indecisiveness, in the end he is found stuck in his own confinement. He fails to
effectively use his time and freedom which results in the imprisonment of his own mind. Prufrock

for a hundred indecisions, And for a hundred visions and revisions, (Eliot, 38 39). Past, present,

Executive Summary
Prior to the merger between BP and Amoco in 1998, both companies had very similar operating
characteristics and performance. Both companies engaged primarily in the same three businesses
and experienced close to the same percentages of revenue and percentages of operating income for
each of those businesses. A key difference however waswere that BP concentrated their operations
predominantly in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe whereas Amoco concentrated their
operations heavily in the United States. Furthermore, before 1992, BP experienced drastically

Again similar to exploration and production, Amoco operated solely in the United States. Both
BP and Amoco had a very large number of retail outlets in which the companies sold petroleum
products to, 8,200 and 9,300 outlets respectively. However, uUnlike exploration and production
activities however, refining and marketing activities accounted for a large percentage of
revenues, 81 and 63 percent respectively, but only a small percentage of company operating
income, 21 and 19 percent respectively. Realizing that this segment was not very profitable in
comparison to exploration and production, BP made the decision to reduce its interests in refining
and marketing. The third business that both BP and Amoco separately engaged in prior to the
merger was the production of petrochemicals. BP had operations for this segment more
widespread than the others and distributed to over 60 countries. Amoco, on the other hand,
concentrated heavily in the United States staying consistent with the other two businesses.
Revenue percentages for petrochemicals were very low for both companies, but operating
income percentages were as well; 7 and 11 percent respectively for BP and 16 and 16 percent
respectively for Amoco. There are a few differences in the pre merger incentiveprograms for
executives at BP and Amoco. Prior to the merger, the compensation of Amoco executives was much

Absolute Film Is Fine Art
Absolute Film Is Fine Art Although literature existing on the subject of abstract cinema s origins
is not lacking, seldom does it appear in a purely art historical context. In mentioning visual
artists, particularly focusing on Hans Richter and Viking Eggeling s collaborations, scholarship
rarely questions the aesthetic motives or innate desire for each of these artists to transcend
pencil and paper, oil and canvas primarily; so what are these films connections to previous
endeavors for these pioneers of abstract film? What drove these established artists to strive for a
universal language and rhythm in the medium of moving image that couldn t be achieved on
canvas or paper? These particular questions will be focused specifically on and answered through
an understanding of the advent of absolute cinema, between 1918 and 1925, before Richter would
move beyond and arguably surpass a non objective approach to film. Absolute cinema
aesthetically conjoins film to the immobile fine arts, bridging the gap and acting as the logical
baby step between painting on canvas and working with celluloid. Not only does absolute cinema
provide such a bridge but it also allows the expression of abstract and geometrical forms to exceed
staticity. What could only exist as an impression of temporality through painting, drawing, and
sculpture, such as within a Boccioni States of Mind paintings or Duchamp s Nude Descending The
Staircase No.2, would now create a more mimetic kinetic movement,

Research Methods And Data Collection Method
Research Methods and Data Collection Method
The research methodology that was used is a descriptive research format. First twenty five
scholarly sources were read, analysed, and annotated. Then, an interviewed was conducted with Dr.
Eileen Appelbaum, who is an expert on paid family and medical leave policies in the United States.
The main data collection method was through meta analysis. Four scholarly journals were reviewed
and analysed in order to come to synthesizing conclusions that support the thesis. The interview
with Dr. Appelbaum allowed for a deeper understand how paid leave is implemented at the state
level, the meta analysis of the journals enabled the researcher to draw conclusions from the research
and conclusions of other related studies.
Summary of Meta Analysis Studies
Documenting the Need for a National Paid Family and Medical Leave Program: Evidence from the
2012 FMLA Survey
By: Helene Jorgensen and Eileen Appelbaum
This journal is an analysis of the Department of Labor s 2012 Family and Medical Leave Act
(FMLA) survey. The surveys conducted in this study mainly focused on the FMLA s effect on
employees working in the private sector. The data collected emphasized on the availability of
FMLA benefits among different racial, occupation, and gender groups, and the main reasons for
employees to take leave, and the strategies used to cover lost wages during unpaid leave periods.
The survey reported that 59.5% of the respondents were eligible for unpaid

Because I Could Not Stop For Death Housman Analysis
Death is quite scary thought isn t it? After all, it is a subject many people don t like to talk
about. We all fear death in some ways, such as losing a loved one, not knowing if they re still
happy and even not knowing what might come after death. Regardless of how we all feel on such
a sad matter, it is truly inevitable and we must all accept it. If we begin to look at deathin a more
beautiful way and not so sinister, we can have a better understanding. In the two poems, Because
I Could Not Stop For Death by Emily Dickinson s and To An Athlete Dying Young by A.E.
Housman while the theme differs, they are much alike in some ways. Emily Dickinson s poem,
Because I Could Not Stop For Death gives me a sense of peace when it comes to death. The
theme portrays death as a easy, peaceful ride when one passes away. The overall metaphor here
is comparing death to a carriage ride. She describes death as a calm person, and she seemed to
trust him as he took her through the town to her death, It felt like she was getting one last ride to
say goodbye and let go. The line We slowly drive He knew no haste gives death... Show more

Housman is very sentimental and really touches me. The theme throughout the poem is clear,
that an athlete well known throughout a seemingly small town passed out. Any one that is a
athlete will make a connection with this poem, because I certainly did. The line And silence no
worse than cheers makes me feel a connection to a person i don t even know, I can imagine the
crowd cheering on the person and how quiet it must be the day he or she dies. Another line from
the poem says it withers quicker than the rose this is metaphor for how the cheerfulness of the
town withered away after such a great loss. The overall theme is very heartbreaking, the complete
opposite of how I felt reading Emily Dickinson s poem. Reading this I really felt like I was a part of
the town that lost such a young

The Foreclosure Nightmare
The American Dream is always becoming bigger and bigger. Since the end of World War II the
United States has been obsessed with suburbia and America s people have been building and
borrowing ever more. The early years of this decade may have paved the way for every family to
get a piece of the American Dream, but as we can all see, in the past couple of years, the financing
options that enabled just about everyone to own a home were not options that were good for those
consumers or the United States economy. Federal Regulation and more education are the only way
to be politically correct while preventing people from buying more home than they can afford and
educate them so they may make the smart choice in purchasing a home. The... Show more content

These strict income to debt ratios may seem unfair to a consumer looking for that American
Dream. Consumers would notice an extremely small scope of home choices especially with a
low income. However unfair it may be to a consumer, it is a policy that will protect both the
lender and consumer. The consumer will also benefit from a home that they know they can afford
every month, with money left over each month to spend (Vintage New Media). Going beyond
qualifications for borrowers, the products lenders have available need to be evaluated. Adjustable
rate mortgages provide a borrower with a low initial interest rate in the initial period, which is an
advantage over a fixed rate loan. Disadvantages of an adjustable rate mortgage however, have
become obvious over the past years. People are allowed to purchase homes that are larger and
more expensive than what they could afford with a fixed rate loan. Interest rate increases may
increase depending on the state of the economy, and monthly payments will most likely increase
beyond the borrowers ability to pay (Bank of America). Therefore, these loans need to be
evaluated in their terms and conditions regarding the borrower. With such an unstable loan, it
would be smart for the lender to avoid selling these loans to high risk consumers. However,
during the hay day (2003 2005) of sub prime lending, these loans were often sold to consumers with
FICO scores below 620 (NPR). So lenders themselves are at fault for

Edwin H. Land Invented The Polaroid Camera
Edwin H. Land
Edwin H. Land invented the Polaroid camera and developed many uses for polarized glass.
American inventor Edwin H. Land was the driving force behind the Polaroid Corporation s
engineering and marketing successes. He founded the company to manufacture his inventions, such
as polarized windows and sunglasses, and he also produced revolutionary optics for the military
during World War II (1939 45). It was his development of the instant camera, however, that made his
company famous and allowed him to dominate the instant photography market with cameras that
first produced pictures in sepia tones, then black and white, and finally in color. Routinely
discarding conventional wisdom, Land believed that market research was not ... Show more content

They were married in 1929, and Land returned to Harvard that same year. This time the university
provided him with a laboratory to conduct his research.
Develops commercial method to polarize light
It had been known since the eighteenth century that certain kinds of crystals (clear colorless
glasses of superior quality) could affect the direction of light waves. In his effort to develop a
method for polarizing light, Land was searching for a crystal that could not only reduce glare but
was stable and economical enough to be produced commercially. He conceived the idea of two
plates that would absorb the light waves that were not wanted and transmit those that were. He
then succeeded in aligning millions of microscopic iodine crystals in one direction, thus creating
the first polarizer. Land presented a paper on his discovery at a physics colloquium (meeting) at
Harvard in February 1932. In June, he left the university, one semester short of a degree, and never
returned.
Invents Polaroid
With a Harvard graduate student named George Wheelwright, who had been one of his teachers,
Land formed Land Wheelwright Laboratories, Inc., in June 1932. The two men worked on
developing methods of manufacturing polarized sheets made of crystals trapped in nitrocellulose
(any of several nitric acid esters of cellulose used for making explosives, plastics, and varnishes).
On November 30, 1934, the camera company Eastman Kodak gave Land Wheelwright an order for
$10,000 worth of

Benefits And Limitations Of Renewable Energy Sources
In the world that we live, the prospects for renewable energy will increase in the European union
as a whole, and in the UK in particular, in the coming decades. Renewable energy sources are
already providing a significant proportion of the world s primary energy, and it is likely to be
providing a much greater proportion of the world s energy by the second half of the 21th century.
The European Union countries may do something to increase 20% of all energy from Renewable
sources by 2020 to the society. This essay will outline the benefits and limitations of two common
renewable energysources, then, it will discuss how the topic suggestion is realistic in the UK
context, and finally, what need to be done to increase renewable energy to 20%... Show more

John Twidel and Tony wair ,2005 in renewable energy resources points out that It has become one
of the fundamental principles for policy in the 21st century. The politicians, industrialists,
environmentalists, economists, and theologians, are affirmed in the world the principle as they
seek international, national, and local cooperation. However, reaching specific agreed policies and
actions is proving much tougher!
In the international context, the word progress relate to amendment in quality of life, including
improving standards of living in less developed countries. The aim of sustainable development is
to achieve this aim while safeguarding the ecological processes upon which life depends. Locally,
progressive businesses seek a positive treble under line, (a positive offering to the economic,
social, and environmental well being of the community). We know that many changes in social
patterns are related to energy supplies. We may expect further changes to occur as renewable
energy systems become even more widespread. The influence of modern science and technology
ensures that there are considerable improvements to older technologies, and subsequently standards
of living can be expected to rise, especially in rural and previously less developed

The Emperor s New Clothes Essay
Hans Christian Andersen s fable, The Emperor s New Clothes is a prophetic warning for our
generation. He understood 200 years ago how dangerous the contradiction of beliefs may be. In
order to have justice we need truth. Justice, in society today is presented as seemingly the most
important value, a cornerstone of civilization. At the same time people have stopped believing in
absolute truth. In the story, the townspeople decide whether or not they see the emperor s clothes,
just like society attempts to change the understanding of truth from objective to a relative one,
based on individual point of view. The tailors in the fable convince the town that only the wise are
able to see the magic clothes. In so doing they are dictating the... Show more content on

This dramatic change was achieved by a carefully designed campaign using courts, media, and a
web of lies to change public opinion. Nowadays the bubble zones around abortion clinics prevent
pro life counselors from informing parents about the dangers of abortion. At the same time, secular
media mostly ignores pro life awareness projects, and presents an exclusively biased pro abortion
point of view. The many lies about abortion are created to convince everyone that the procedure is
completely harmless, normal, and should be accepted as a basic human right. Pro choice activists
promote abortion as an insignificant surgical procedure contrary to established scientific facts.
Health risks include hemorrhage, infections, a higher risk of breast cancer and even death.
Abortion not only harms the woman physically, but can also have a lifelong emotional and mental
fallout on the whole family. In masking evil as good, society distorts the truth in the abortion
debate, and since truth is a requirement for justice, we need to reveal it. When the Emperor struts
through town with no clothes on, he is still praised by the townspeople, even though he is naked. In
the same way, the promoted politically correct view approves and supports abortion as
inconspicuously named woman s right to

  • 2. Differences And Similarities Between Pulitzer And Joseph... In America the President reigns for four years, and journalism governs for ever and ever. Oscar Wilde never spoke truer words. The aforementioned ability to govern for ever and ever comes from journalistic sensationalism, a craft perfected by newspaper owners and journalists Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearstat the dawn of the twentieth century. Sensationalism counts for only one of the numerous ties between the career rivals who, in an effort to distinguish themselves from each other, ironically knotted themselves together in journalism history. Joseph Pulitzeremigrated to the United States of America from Hungary at the age of seventeen and subsequently joined the Union army of the U.S. Civil War. After the war, Carl ... Helped in large part by owning an established newspaper fresh out of college, Hearst worked his way up the small portion of proverbial ladder Hearst had yet to climb in the journalism world by purchasing The New York Morning Journal. Coincidentally, Hearst purchased The New York Morning Journal from Pulitzer s soon to be estranged brother Albert (Therkelsen 7) and renamed the paper The Journal ( William, Sidelights). Hearst s first took his first notorious step with his pilfering of all of Pulitzer s editorial staff at the New York World, followed by Pulitzer s rehiring, and Hearst s second theft of the same journalists (Contemporary, Joseph ). Pulitzer, as the originator of the colorful comics section in newspapers, made sure to keep The Yellow Kid comic strip in the New York World newspaper despite losing the original designer in Pulitzer s continuing battle with Hearst (Squires). The fact that the battle went deep enough into the newspapers to affect the comics section helped historians coin the term yellow journalism as an idiom for how Hearst and Pulitzer ran their respective newspapers (Therkelsen 7). This immature feud between the two grown men may sound harmless, but accusations surfaced suggesting this quarrel may have caused the Spanish American War. Without any official word from government organizations, Hearst and Pulitzer both published unconfirmed sensationalistic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Last Lecture By Randy Pausch Randy Pausch s The Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams was given on September 18th, 2007, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Randy made his goal of the speech not more than five minutes in, stating the importance of achieving your childhood dreams. The language he is using is very formal, and he appeals to the audience by making several references to common things such as movies, and a humorous quote after he states his current condition, I m in better shape than most of you! as he proceeds doing pushups on stage. In various points in his speech, he is speaking to certain individuals in the audience about things pertaining to his story, and how he achieved some of his childhood dreams with the help of others. Randy really hit it off with everybody, and made the speech untimely, so that anybody at any point in time can view his speech and wonder is this still relevant? Near the closing of his speech, he states that he wasn t giving to speech for everybody in the audience; he was giving the speech for his children, as he wouldn t be around for them growing up. At several points in his speech he makes references to common things and statistics, such as MacBook s and how few people have one. • 5. Juxtaposition In Bless Me Ultima Bright white light of the New Mexico sun bathes and protects the small town of Guadalupe. Like his parents and older brothers before him, young Antonio struggles to find his true inner self as his parents push two family names on him. In Anaya Rudolfo s novel Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio is ultimately a mixture between a Marez and a Luna, as seen through the juxtaposition between the symbols of the moonand the sea, as well as Godand the Golden Carp. The moon that represents the Luna family, and sea which connects to the Marez, are forces which push Antonio to make his final decision about family. In the beginning, Antonio tries his hardest to please both of his parents by combining their dissimilar ideas about his future. Although Antonio begins his life thinking he is a mixture of both parents heritage, the juxtaposition of the symbols in the book changes his mind on that, It is the blood of the Lunas to be quiet... They are quiet like the moon And it is the blood of the MГЎrez to be wild, like the ocean from which they take their name (Anaya 41). Aside from the obvious fact that the Spanish word for moon is, in fact, Luna, that family represents the moon. The calmness of said moon contrasts with the wild men of the sea. Maria is controlling of her family, similar to how the moon controls the sea. Each contrasting idea propels Antonio in separate directions either towards the Luna priests or the Marez vaqueros. Despite the fact that his mother wants to make a priest out of Antonio, the other side of his family thinks in their own unique way, He is a Marez... His forefathers were conquistadors, men as restless as the seas they sailed (Anaya 6). Once again, the contrary sides of Antonio s family pull him to the sea instead of the moon. The true struggle Antonio goes through is choosing his own destiny, even with the strong influences of both the moon and sea. Suddenly he has a moment of realization and tells his uncle, I am Marez, ... That is right, you are a Marez first, then Luna (Anaya 250). Even though he may think he is Marez first, he still lives with Luna blood coursing through his veins. After all, he skipped a grade, which makes him a boy of learning. A quote by Clara Barton, American civil war nurse and founder of the American National Red Cross (Lewis). By many, Clara is said to be The Angel of The Battlefield , how does one acquire such a title (Allen)? Through her family life, her efforts providing relief to soldiers on the front lines, and her work with the international and american red cross, she earned the title of The Angel of the Battlefield (Clara Barton). December 25, 1821, Clara Barton was brought into this world in North Oxford, Massachusetts. Her father worked as not only a farmer but also as a state lawmaker. He even served in the American Revolution (Allen). One of Clara s most famous quotes The patriot blood of my father was warm in my veins (Lewis) illustrates her dedication to the patriot cause, likely brought upon by her father s influence. • 7. Theme Of Corruption In Animal Farm George Orwell the author of Animal Farm and Barry Levinson director of the Cinematic production Wag the Dog both explore in their texts the corruption of society. Various key ideas are explored to expose Corruption and highlight how powers use manipulation and half truths to gain and retain control. To make their ideas prudent to the audience, Orwell and Levinson make use of various literary and filmic techniques, most prominent of these in both texts is the use of Irony. These texts influence the audience directly to consider the potential foley of human forms of governance which is timely to society in our day. The Author George Orwell and the Directer Barry Levinson express in their texts Animal Farm and Wag the Dog an exploration into corruption. Orwell depicts Animal farm s fall into corruption through the narrative perspective of the working animals where as Levinson exposes the already set corruption through a narrative perspective of the fixers. This third person limited perspective allows the irony in the texts to build as the story progresses, because each plot point is viewed from one side thus information has a greater impact and tension when revealed. Irony, can be no better applied, when a free country like America has it s voting manipulated to keep unjust leaders in power. • 8. Metaphors As A Metaphor Morgan s metaphors personified: Auto bot a new way of understanding and theorizing about the organizations Theories are built from abstractions known as concepts. Metaphors have long been in use to describe organizations and development of organizational theory. In order to understand abstract concepts, it is of fundamental importance to know how metaphor works. Different scholars within the field of organizational research have acknowledged this (e.g. Morgan 1980; Weick 1989; Cornelissen 2005; Putman Boys 2006). Within the field of linguistics, probably no phenomenon has been as well researched as metaphor (Steen 2007). Research shows that for language users, it is inevitable to use metaphor when dealing with abstract concepts. Metaphors therefore play a key role in the construction of reality (Lakoff Johnson 1999). Use of metaphors always has limitations which are mentioned by Gareth Morgan the Author of the famous classic book on organizational theory, images of organization . Social Care services sector s role is to deliver social care systems which offer care equality for all individuals, while allowing people to retain their independence, dignity and control. During the past 20 years the need for social care services in the UK slightly increased. This is mainly due to demographic factors such as an increasing aging population. Therefore this means that more care and residential care homes are needed. Also, a number of women with small children, who decided to come back to work, is growing. This means that there is a need for new nursery and pre schools, which would look after the children. Britain has a mixed economy of care... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are often those who fill the gap which was left by other sectors. They usually concentrate more on social care rather than on health sector e.g. their role is to help poor people in need. Examples of them are: Red Cross, Oxfam, and British Heart Foundation. Social Care services can be accessed by using referrals. There are 3 different types of referrals: self referral, professional referral and third party referral, each of them involves different process. Self referral is when individuals suspects by themselves that they have some problems with their social issues. Therefore, they self refer to a social care specialist in order to receive the help and support that they need. Professional referral is when a service user already contacted or used the service; however if the professional suspects any kind of underlying health problem, the patient will be referred directly to another professional. For example if the social worker suspects a child abuse in the family, he/she may refer the child to a counsellor or psychologist to sort out the problem. Third party referral, is when a non professional person such as relative, friend or neighbour contacts with the services in order to help the individual they know about. For example the resident of the residential care home may be referred by the home manager to see a social worker. • 10. Locke s Second Treatise Of Government Locke shares a different view of human nature compared to Hobbes. Locke argued human nature is not a constant war but rather a peaceful state. He views humans as peaceful and rational beings, ones that can communicate with one another and can live in harmony without the need of a government authority. Locke believed that people have a knowledge of what he calls the laws of nature given by God, instructing us not to harm one another in terms of our rights ( Ingersoll, Matthews, Davison 2010, pg53). According to Locke based off his Second Treatise of Government, God gave man common property for them to turn it into private property (Locke 1980, pg18). However, to legitimately transfer public property to private property there are three fundamental rules. First, the individual must mix their labour into it. They must invest their labour into to change it from being the publics to know being yours. This could mean cultivating land to grow food or picking an apple from a tree. Second, you must leave as much and as good for others. This implying that one person cannot claim all the land or take all the apples from one tree. Lastly, the third rule indicates not to let anything spoil or go to waste. If a person claims land or an apple tree but lets the apple rot or does not use the land, Locke states how you would lose their claim to that private possession. With the possession of private property, comes the introduction of money and the monetary system. Money allows people to become more productive with their land, it gives them inventive to cultivate their land and sell their products to earn a profit. Money also eliminates the fear of spoilage because now people have incentive to work and acquire as much as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Importance Of Indigenous People In Australia The role and place of Indigenous Australians in perceptions of national identity is generally neglected. Contemporary issues among Indigenous people in Australia include racial discrimination, poor health and access to health services, levels of employment and education (Hampton Toombs, 2013). The traumatic diaspora of the Stolen Generations and the negative impacts of racial and economic disadvantage such as segregation and displacement have contributed to Indigenous peoplesfeeling of mistrust (Queensland Health, 2015). According to Kelly (2013), a fundamental challenge faced by educators today is planning and teaching for a future where the tragedies of the past are overcome for Indigenous students. This essay views these topics as interrelated and discusses them in reference to whole school best practice to support teaching Indigenous students. In Australia, educational policies at the Commonwealth level have had set expectations for the inclusion of Indigenous themes in school curricula for more than two decades (Kelly, 2013). ACARA has a stated intention of ensuring that all young Australians will be given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures , (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2011), yet Lowe Yunkaporta (n.d.), describe the Australian Curriculum as privileged content that ignores the realities faced by twenty first century learners. • 12. Critical Analysis Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning The Hopeless Romantic: Elizabeth Barrett Browning In the poem How do I love thee? by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Browning asks how she loves her beloved and goes on to list the ways in which she loves him. Her love is seen as eternal and exists everywhere which brings to light the tone and styling of the poem and how it fits in the movement it was written in. Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born in 1806 at Coxhoe Hall, Durham, England. (Poetry Foundation) During the time of her writings, she was seen as one of the most influential poets for the Romantic Movement. Romantics focused on nature, human feelings and compassion, and rebelling for a cause, which Browning shows a lot of throughout her sonnet. Browning was born in 1806 at Coxhoe Hall in Durham, England. She was a romantic writer but it closely reflected the life she was living at the time. The oldest of twelve children, Elizabeth was the first in her family born in England in over two hundred years. For centuries, the Barrett family, who were part Creole, had lived in Jamaica, where they owned sugar plantations and relied on slave labor. (Poetry Foundation) Elizabeth s father, chose to raise his family in England, while his fortune grew in Jamaica. Educated at home Elizabeth apparently read passages from Paradise Lost and a number of Shakespearean plays, among other great works, before the age of ten. By her twelfth year, she had written her first epic poem, which consisted of four books of rhyming couplets. In 1826 , Elizabeth anonymously published her collection An Essay on Mind and Other Poems. Two years later, her mother passed away and the slow abolition of slavery in England and mismanagement of the plantations depleted the Barrett s income. Elizabeth s father moved his family to a coastal town and rented cottages for the next three years before settling permanently in London. Her father did not allow his children to marry, having them work on the plantations in Jamaica instead. Gaining attention for her work in the 1830s, Elizabeth continued to live in her father s London house, not by choice however. He began sending Elizabeth s younger siblings to Jamaica to help with the family s estates. Elizabeth opposed of slavery and did ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Rape Culture Analysis Rape culture is the environment in which rape is common and sexual violence against women is normalized by the media. Rape culture is promoted with the use of misogynistic language, the objectification of women s bodies, and the glamorization of sexual violence, which creates a society that ignores the rights and safety of women. In 2013, Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams released the summer hit Blurred Lines, which became known as a rapesong. Blurred Lines is the perfect example of how rape culture is used by the media while using misogynistic language, objectification of women s bodies, and glamorization of sexual violence. Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams Blurred Lines uses misogynistic lyrics that promotes rape culture. The first use of misogynistic language is in the bridge of the song when Thicke sings Tried to domesticate you, But you re an animal. Thicke is obviously comparing a girl to an animal in this lyric, but he also mentions that someone tried to domesticate her, which means that they trained to tame which implies he owns her. The ownership of a womanis a misogynistic way of thinking because people cannot own other people. Then in the hook of the song Thicke calls the girl a Good girl, which is very condescending because it sounds like he is speaking down to her. This suggest that he is superior to her and is asserting his male dominance. In the second verse of the song Thicke sings You the hottest bitch in this place, which is a ... • 19. Life Is Beautiful Film Analysis Life is Beautiful Movie Analysis Life is Beautiful, directed by Italian director Roberto Benigni, released in 1997, is a film about love, war and death. Set just before and during WWII, the main character, Guido falls in love with the woman of his dreams, they have a child but they get separated by the horrors of the war. Guido and his little son strive to get reunited with his wife but their internment in a Nazi concentration camp halts him from doing so. Nevertheless, he slyly keeps in contact with his wife so she knows they are safe and well. Roberto Benigni uses cinematic techniques such as music, costume and lighting to convey the strong theme of love between two characters in the film Life is Beautiful. In Life is Beautiful, the love between two people is a recurring theme. The music, composed by Italian light classical composer Nicola Piovani, is one of the major factors that helps successfully convey this theme to the audience. In the film, the same upbeat tune is used for many of the romantic scenes between Guido and Dora. This tune, in a more subtle tone, is the theme song for the film, and when it is repeated for the romantic themes it gives a powerful sense of love. For example, when Dora falls out of that farm house, and Guido catches her, the music is used for the first time in a romantic setting. The same music is then repeated in the scene at the 11 minute mark when Guido falls off his bike into Dora and they both fall over into a big pile of sand. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some of the minor themes are acting before thinking and denial of unexplainable events. It is based on the two major themes of science experiments gone wrong and the ignorance of society. The most important theme in the novel was the experiment that Griffin, the invisible man, was working and it was not going exactly as planned. The major problem with his invisibility was that Griffin was not able to keep or have any friends. His only contact was after he was all bandaged up and looked as though he had been in a bad accident. Without any human contact or support Griffin was destined to become crazy. In the ending chapters of the novel it is obvious that Griffin has lost his mind and is completely insane. Not wanton killing, but a judicious slaying. The point is, they know there is an Invisible Man as well as we know there is an Invisible Man. And that Invisible Man, Kemp, must now establish a Reign of Terror. (Pg. 114) The previous quote was taken as the invisible man was talking to Kemp about his plans of judicial killing. Due to the fact that crime still happens in the world. This essay will look at the support for the theory. As well as the key problems for the theory. Next, it will explain some of the newest directions in deterrence/rational choice theory. Finally, it will either agree/disagree with someone s thought on deterrence and how it does not work and is a waste of time to study. Deterrence and rational choice are two different things. Deterrence is used to punish those who disobey and in return help deter others from committing the same crime. While rational choice is when the individual thinks about the cost and the benefits of them committing this crime (Cornish and Clarke, text CH 34). Deterrence and rational choice tend to work pretty well on young adults. For example, if a teenager sees his friends face time in prison for committing an act of violence. That may deter them from committing the same crime or something similar. Reason is that they possibly think of the pros and cons of each situation and how the effect it could have on family. Also where deterrence and rational choice work could not be define. Revenue percentages for petrochemicals were very low for both companies, but operating income percentages were as well; 7 and 11 percent respectively for BP and 16 and 16 percent respectively for Amoco. There are a few differences in the pre merger incentiveprograms for executives at BP and Amoco. Prior to the merger, the compensation of Amoco executives was much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Absolute Film Is Fine Art Absolute Film Is Fine Art Although literature existing on the subject of abstract cinema s origins is not lacking, seldom does it appear in a purely art historical context. In mentioning visual artists, particularly focusing on Hans Richter and Viking Eggeling s collaborations, scholarship rarely questions the aesthetic motives or innate desire for each of these artists to transcend pencil and paper, oil and canvas primarily; so what are these films connections to previous endeavors for these pioneers of abstract film? What drove these established artists to strive for a universal language and rhythm in the medium of moving image that couldn t be achieved on canvas or paper? These particular questions will be focused specifically on and answered through an understanding of the advent of absolute cinema, between 1918 and 1925, before Richter would move beyond and arguably surpass a non objective approach to film. Absolute cinema aesthetically conjoins film to the immobile fine arts, bridging the gap and acting as the logical baby step between painting on canvas and working with celluloid. Not only does absolute cinema provide such a bridge but it also allows the expression of abstract and geometrical forms to exceed staticity. What could only exist as an impression of temporality through painting, drawing, and sculpture, such as within a Boccioni States of Mind paintings or Duchamp s Nude Descending The Staircase No.2, would now create a more mimetic kinetic movement, ... First twenty five scholarly sources were read, analysed, and annotated. Then, an interviewed was conducted with Dr. Eileen Appelbaum, who is an expert on paid family and medical leave policies in the United States. The main data collection method was through meta analysis. Four scholarly journals were reviewed and analysed in order to come to synthesizing conclusions that support the thesis. The interview with Dr. Appelbaum allowed for a deeper understand how paid leave is implemented at the state level, the meta analysis of the journals enabled the researcher to draw conclusions from the research and conclusions of other related studies. Summary of Meta Analysis Studies Documenting the Need for a National Paid Family and Medical Leave Program: Evidence from the 2012 FMLA Survey By: Helene Jorgensen and Eileen Appelbaum This journal is an analysis of the Department of Labor s 2012 Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) survey. The surveys conducted in this study mainly focused on the FMLA s effect on employees working in the private sector. The data collected emphasized on the availability of FMLA benefits among different racial, occupation, and gender groups, and the main reasons for employees to take leave, and the strategies used to cover lost wages during unpaid leave periods. • 47. Because I Could Not Stop For Death Housman Analysis Death is quite scary thought isn t it? After all, it is a subject many people don t like to talk about. We all fear death in some ways, such as losing a loved one, not knowing if they re still happy and even not knowing what might come after death. Regardless of how we all feel on such a sad matter, it is truly inevitable and we must all accept it. If we begin to look at deathin a more beautiful way and not so sinister, we can have a better understanding. In the two poems, Because I Could Not Stop For Death by Emily Dickinson s and To An Athlete Dying Young by A.E. Housman while the theme differs, they are much alike in some ways. Emily Dickinson s poem, Because I Could Not Stop For Death gives me a sense of peace when it comes to death. The theme portrays death as a easy, peaceful ride when one passes away. The overall metaphor here is comparing death to a carriage ride. She describes death as a calm person, and she seemed to trust him as he took her through the town to her death, It felt like she was getting one last ride to say goodbye and let go. The line We slowly drive He knew no haste gives death... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Housman is very sentimental and really touches me. The theme throughout the poem is clear, that an athlete well known throughout a seemingly small town passed out. Any one that is a athlete will make a connection with this poem, because I certainly did. The line And silence no worse than cheers makes me feel a connection to a person i don t even know, I can imagine the crowd cheering on the person and how quiet it must be the day he or she dies. Another line from the poem says it withers quicker than the rose this is metaphor for how the cheerfulness of the town withered away after such a great loss. The overall theme is very heartbreaking, the complete opposite of how I felt reading Emily Dickinson s poem. Reading this I really felt like I was a part of the town that lost such a young ... • 48. The Foreclosure Nightmare The American Dream is always becoming bigger and bigger. Since the end of World War II the United States has been obsessed with suburbia and America s people have been building and borrowing ever more. The early years of this decade may have paved the way for every family to get a piece of the American Dream, but as we can all see, in the past couple of years, the financing options that enabled just about everyone to own a home were not options that were good for those consumers or the United States economy. Federal Regulation and more education are the only way to be politically correct while preventing people from buying more home than they can afford and educate them so they may make the smart choice in purchasing a home. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These strict income to debt ratios may seem unfair to a consumer looking for that American Dream. Consumers would notice an extremely small scope of home choices especially with a low income. However unfair it may be to a consumer, it is a policy that will protect both the lender and consumer. The consumer will also benefit from a home that they know they can afford every month, with money left over each month to spend (Vintage New Media). Going beyond qualifications for borrowers, the products lenders have available need to be evaluated. Adjustable rate mortgages provide a borrower with a low initial interest rate in the initial period, which is an advantage over a fixed rate loan. Disadvantages of an adjustable rate mortgage however, have become obvious over the past years. People are allowed to purchase homes that are larger and more expensive than what they could afford with a fixed rate loan. Interest rate increases may increase depending on the state of the economy, and monthly payments will most likely increase beyond the borrowers ability to pay (Bank of America). Therefore, these loans need to be evaluated in their terms and conditions regarding the borrower. With such an unstable loan, it would be smart for the lender to avoid selling these loans to high risk consumers. However, during the hay day (2003 2005) of sub prime lending, these loans were often sold to consumers with FICO scores below 620 (NPR). So lenders themselves are at fault for ... • 49. Edwin H. Land Invented The Polaroid Camera Edwin H. Land Edwin H. Land invented the Polaroid camera and developed many uses for polarized glass. American inventor Edwin H. Land was the driving force behind the Polaroid Corporation s engineering and marketing successes. He founded the company to manufacture his inventions, such as polarized windows and sunglasses, and he also produced revolutionary optics for the military during World War II (1939 45). It was his development of the instant camera, however, that made his company famous and allowed him to dominate the instant photography market with cameras that first produced pictures in sepia tones, then black and white, and finally in color. Routinely discarding conventional wisdom, Land believed that market research was not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were married in 1929, and Land returned to Harvard that same year. This time the university provided him with a laboratory to conduct his research. Develops commercial method to polarize light It had been known since the eighteenth century that certain kinds of crystals (clear colorless glasses of superior quality) could affect the direction of light waves. In his effort to develop a method for polarizing light, Land was searching for a crystal that could not only reduce glare but was stable and economical enough to be produced commercially. He conceived the idea of two plates that would absorb the light waves that were not wanted and transmit those that were. He then succeeded in aligning millions of microscopic iodine crystals in one direction, thus creating the first polarizer. Land presented a paper on his discovery at a physics colloquium (meeting) at Harvard in February 1932. In June, he left the university, one semester short of a degree, and never returned. Invents Polaroid With a Harvard graduate student named George Wheelwright, who had been one of his teachers, Land formed Land Wheelwright Laboratories, Inc., in June 1932. The two men worked on developing methods of manufacturing polarized sheets made of crystals trapped in nitrocellulose (any of several nitric acid esters of cellulose used for making explosives, plastics, and varnishes). On November 30, 1934, the camera company Eastman Kodak gave Land Wheelwright an order for $10,000 worth of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Benefits And Limitations Of Renewable Energy Sources In the world that we live, the prospects for renewable energy will increase in the European union as a whole, and in the UK in particular, in the coming decades. Renewable energy sources are already providing a significant proportion of the world s primary energy, and it is likely to be providing a much greater proportion of the world s energy by the second half of the 21th century. The politicians, industrialists, environmentalists, economists, and theologians, are affirmed in the world the principle as they seek international, national, and local cooperation. However, reaching specific agreed policies and actions is proving much tougher! In the international context, the word progress relate to amendment in quality of life, including improving standards of living in less developed countries. The aim of sustainable development is to achieve this aim while safeguarding the ecological processes upon which life depends. Locally, progressive businesses seek a positive treble under line, (a positive offering to the economic, social, and environmental well being of the community). We know that many changes in social patterns are related to energy supplies. We may expect further changes to occur as renewable energy systems become even more widespread. The influence of modern science and technology ensures that there are considerable improvements to older technologies, and subsequently standards of living can be expected to rise, especially in rural and previously less developed ... • 51. The Emperor s New Clothes Essay Hans Christian Andersen s fable, The Emperor s New Clothes is a prophetic warning for our generation. He understood 200 years ago how dangerous the contradiction of beliefs may be. In order to have justice we need truth. Justice, in society today is presented as seemingly the most important value, a cornerstone of civilization. At the same time people have stopped believing in absolute truth. In the story, the townspeople decide whether or not they see the emperor s clothes, just like society attempts to change the understanding of truth from objective to a relative one, based on individual point of view. The tailors in the fable convince the town that only the wise are able to see the magic clothes. In so doing they are dictating the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This dramatic change was achieved by a carefully designed campaign using courts, media, and a web of lies to change public opinion. Nowadays the bubble zones around abortion clinics prevent pro life counselors from informing parents about the dangers of abortion. At the same time, secular media mostly ignores pro life awareness projects, and presents an exclusively biased pro abortion point of view. The many lies about abortion are created to convince everyone that the procedure is completely harmless, normal, and should be accepted as a basic human right. Pro choice activists promote abortion as an insignificant surgical procedure contrary to established scientific facts. Health risks include hemorrhage, infections, a higher risk of breast cancer and even death. Abortion not only harms the woman physically, but can also have a lifelong emotional and mental fallout on the whole family. In masking evil as good, society distorts the truth in the abortion debate, and since truth is a requirement for justice, we need to reveal it. When the Emperor struts through town with no clothes on, he is still praised by the townspeople, even though he is naked. In the same way, the promoted politically correct view approves and supports abortion as inconspicuously named woman s right to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
