How Is Situational Irony Used In The Scarlet Letter
Novelist, Ernest Hemingway, in his novel, The Scarlet Letter, writes about the Puritan life and how
some characters with through a rough path of disobeying the Puritan culture. He has many characters
that represent many different things in his novel. Hemingway uses an abundance of rhetorical
strategies. One of the ones that he uses is irony. He uses different types of irony such as verbal,
situational and dramatic to shows the imperfect world that the Puritans really had. Verbal irony is
when the speakers says one thing but means another, or saying something without realizing its
significance. An example of verbal irony would be when Hester stands on the scaffold. Dimmesdale
wants her to tell her sins. Dimmesdale tells her that her silence would only add hypocrisy to sin. This
is ironic because he does not know how much hypocrisy his life will be. Another example of verbal
irony is when Pearl asked Hester, Why does Dimmesdale cover his ... Show more content on

Dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that characters in the story do not know. An
example would be when Hester tries to convince the governor to let her keep Pearl because they do
not think that she is a fit mother. She wants Dimmesdale to talk for her because he knows her best.
This is dramatic irony because everybody else thinks he knows her best because he is the reverend but
the reader knows that he actually committed the same sin and their equal. Another example of
dramatic irony would be when Dimmesdale becomes sick and moves in with Chillingworth because
he is the town s doctor and his suppose to nurse him back to better. Chillingworth is only making
Dimmesdale sickness worse. He reminds him of how bad it is to commit sin and what it does to you. It
is also dramatic irony because the reader knows that Dimmesdale is Hester s father before anybody
else knows. Hawthorne uses dramatic irony to create the story and all of its good

My Day At The Dynasty Privileged School
Mother Nature must be happy , I thought as I walked through the sunlit streets of Paris. Too bad that I
don t share her mood. School at the Dynasty Privileged School had just dismissed, and right after the
bell, I shot out of my Pre Nuclear War History class, ran to my locker to deposit my heavy textbook in
it and grabbed my purse.
Thank the heavens that we don t have any homework today, besides the usual in French and English
Lit, because I could not have handled dragging those textbooks with me to my favorite internet cafe
again. I walked through the streets, noticing that without my schoolbag, I got a lot, and a lot different

The cashiers and the customers at the store noticed a nice, smiling girl, obediently following her father
around the store and helping him carry their purchases. What they didn t notice, however, was the
slight shuffle in the girl s step, or the way way that her father walked with his usual briskness while
she limped a couple steps behind.
They didn t notice that her smile was fake, her expression pained, and the deep, raging sadness in her
eyes every time her father dismissed her opinion or made a fake gagging sound at something she
wanted to buy. Nor did they notice how he didn t protest when the injured child put her hands on the
bag of groceries, offering to be the one to carry it to their vehicle; instead he just arrogantly nodded in
her direction, as if telling her to carry it.
The people around Alina didn t notice any of this. But she did. Not that she told anyone. If she told
anyone, even her mother; especially her mother; it was sure to spark up a fight with her dad again, and
deepen the unknown to anyone but themselves, rift growing between them.
No, Alina would not tell anybody. This would be another one of her dark secrets, kept to herself, and
cried over in the deepest, darkest parts of night, in the private sanctuary of her room.
It was one of those secrets that even the slightest mention of made you want to start screaming in pain

Glass Blowing in the First Century
The production and creation of beautiful art pieces using glass only began after glass blowing was
used in the First Century BC. Two unique artists have used this medium to create work that is both
beyond its time and surpasses many other glass works. The first artist, Louis Comfort Tiffany, was the
son of the founder of Tiffany and Company, Charles Lewis Tiffany. His work focuses on aesthetic
beauty while encompassing the techniques he established throughout his career. The second artist,
Beverly Fishman, is an artist from Philadelphia who has not only made a name for herself, but has
also accepted the Artist in Residence position at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Both of these
individuals have a strong passion and drive that elevates their work to the next level. The difference
between the work of these two artists lies in the conceptual realm. Connecting work to outside
concepts gives the artist versatility, while aesthetically pleasing work reaches the viewer on a much
deeper level. Both of these strategies allow the artist to express themself, but have profoundly
different influences on the receptive audience. Louis Comfort Tiffany is known for his array of works,
which includes both glass and non glass pieces. He not only designed stained glass windows, lamps,
glass mosaics and blown glass, but he is also known for his work in ceramics, enamels, jewelry and
metalwork. The piece by Tiffany that will be the main focus of this argument is his Flower form Vase
from 1910.

1907 Early Electronic Systems Campbell Swinton and Boris Rosing suggest using cathode ray tubes
to transmit images. Independent of

1923 Vladimir Zworkin patents his iconscope a TV camera tube based on Campbell Swinton s ideas.
The iconscope, which he called an electric eye becomes the cornerstone for further television
development. Zworkin later develops the kinescope for picture display (aka the reciever).

Telework Case
With the use of technology increasing substantially as well as with the new generation who relies on
such technology, telework has become the future of work. Companies embrace and adopt
telecommunicating practices, as the benefits are clear. For this reason, telework was chosen as a
project to be implemented in the business in order to gain profit and in turn reduce turnover. Berkeley
College conducted a comprehensive program that analyzed companies such as AT T. This study was
conducted to discern the percentage of savings that would result from such action. Thus, AT T initiated
30,000 employees nationally to begin to telecommute from home. Through the next five years, they
studied this program and found that AT T was able to save ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Telecommuting requires little investment compared to the projected return on the project. Though
financially it seems that implementing telecommuting is a positive investment, the Blue Apron
company is still relatively small and new compared to other larger companies such as AT T who have
implemented telework into their company. This means that are certain precautions that the company
should take prior to investing. The recommendations are that in making decisions about which
employees will be designated for telework. Companies should review their quality of work of the
employee and their productivity levels. Telework can be said to increase productivity of the
employees, but it is possible that if telecommuting put into place that the quality of the employees
work could begin to suffer. Furthermore, it is imperative to ensure that their positions are appropriate.
For instance, telecommunicating would best serve data processing tasks, bookkeeping, or accounting
jobs. For positions within the Blue Apron company that are more geared towards collaboration and
innovation as telecommunicating can lead to isolation in the workplace because it can create a barrier
between teams, one that in the traditional workplace is not present. Also, make sure that smaller start
up companies wait until they have had continuous profit growth for

The Pros And Cons Of The American Civil War
Railroads are not nearly as popular in the United States as they are in European countries. Prior to the
American Civil War, railroads were a fairly new, and untried, invention. Compared to carriages and
the other modes of transportation at the time, the railroad was far superior. Due to this superiority, they
were used to transport soldiers, food, and supplies. A systemic railroad began to spread all across the
nation, and both sides of the war used them to their advantage. The railroad construction started as
soon as possible. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was founded in 1828 and its first section of rails
was open in 1830. At its peak, The B O Railroad spread from the east coast all the way to the Illinois,
and was over 5,550 miles long! In 1831, the state of Maryland granted the B O Railroad and charter to
begin construction of a line connecting Maryland to Washington D.C. The south, which was mostly a
society built on agriculture, was at a huge disadvantage when it came to railroads. Two thirds of all the
railroads in the nation at the time were in the north. The southern states couldn t transport anything as
easy as the north, and their income mostly relied on the exportation of their crops. Without this source
of income, the Confederacy s economy was crippled. Arguably, railroads were the reason for the South
s eventual defeat. By 1861, 22,000 miles of track had been laid in the Northern states and 9,500 miles
in the South. In the south, there were cities that

Privacy is very rare and people do not really express their disappointment, joy or feelings. However,
there are following characteristics for Indians: family orientation, honour of both family and group,
material susses and creativity, problem solving, risk takers and experimenters, loyalty to a group,
arranged marriages, do it yourself mentality, fatalism and savy at business. Indians communication
style is high context oriented. Elderly people are always threatened with respect, talking to them
presupposes using formal and respectful forms. Indians use communication to tighten up their
relationships and to preserve harmony but not to exchange information. Additionally Indians are
extrovert, talkative, emotional, unpunctual and they mix professional and family affairs. On the whole
Indians prefer to be a member of a group and acting collectively. This is a result of the hierarchical
system in India. Indians have several rules when it is allowed for them to speak, e.g. they are allowed
to speak, if someone before began to speak with them, it is inapplicable to show emotions verbal or
non verbal in public, they should not ask direct questions to somebody they do not know well.
Furthermore, it is disrespectful to interrupt a person, they have to wait until the person gives a sign.

expressions of gratitude. Indians show their gratefulness and thankfulness on other

Pearl Harbor Reaction Paper
The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was the single most important event of the century and there are
many lessons learned from this event that can be applied to modern day military principles.
Complacency on the part of the United States Government and senior military officials played a key
role in this attack being successful. No one ever thought the Japanese, or any other nation for that
matter, would directly attack the United States. Had the intelligence officials at the time utilized the
high impact, low probability critical thinking model to identify those high payoff targets, then maybe
the attack could have been prevented. In terms of technology, the United States had a distinct
advantage at the time, especially since the Japanese communications code was not only broken, but
remained unchanged for a significant amount of time. There were plenty of indicators that were
collected by United States intelligence activities and by Washington; however, most of the critical
information collected was never appropriately passed to the people that needed it most, the
commanders in the field. And finally, when the commanders in the field were weary of an impending
attack, their request for additional men, weapons, and equipment went unanswered despite
Washington having enough information to substantiate the concern.

reconnaissance efforts in the Pacific should have been the priority of effort. With the amount of

vicinity of Midway Island. Had those aircraft carriers been performing regular reconnaissance flights,

Dale Earnhardt Essay
Dale Earnhardt grew up in automotive racing. Ever since he was a kid that is what his family did, and
now his family carries on that legacy. Dale Earnhardt grew up in Kannapolis, North Carolina, a textile
mill town. His father, Ralph Earnhardt, was known as Iron heart on the short track racing circuit, and
he taught Dale how to drive stock cars and work with engines. His father had converted a barn behind
the family home into a garage, and he was well known for his skill with engines. Earnhardt s earliest
memory is of watching his father race. Dale dropped out of high school after the eighth grade because

Dale s father helped him out with racing by helping him build motors, and giving him used tires left.
When his father died it left Dale in a situation where he had to make it on his own. Dale once said, I d

Dale s first break in to racing was in 1975 when he drove in his first Winston cup race, coming in at
22nd. For Dale, unlike many other drivers, driving was not a hobby, it was almost his only means of
support. If he was short of money, he borrowed from other drivers, hoping that he would win the next
Sunday s race so he could pay them back on Monday. Dale was a fearless driver, but he was also
astonishingly precise. Dale s first major break was in 1978, when he replaced another driver in the
world cup 600, in Charlotte N.C. where he placed 7th one race, that is when he caught the eye of a
Winston cup car owner. That owners name was Rod Osterlund and wasn t happy with his current
driver. Rod replaced his current driver with Dale for the next to last race of that season, and Dale
drove with his characteristic fearlessness, refusing to be intimidated by the experienced drivers he was
competing against. This won him a full time position driving for Osterlund, and in only his 16th start,
he had his first win. By 1979, Earnhardt was named

Comparing Poetry And Archibald Macleish In Ars Poetica
What is a poem and what makes a poem important? This question can have multiple answers for many
different people. Two such poets have ideas of this question to express in their poems. Marianne
Moore in her poem, Poetry, and Archibald MacLeish in Ars Poetica. Both are very talented poets and
their views of what a poem should be and what makes it important are both alike and different.
Marianne s Poetry, and Archibald s Ars Poetica, expresses different views of how a poem should
present its theme, but both are similar in their views of the use of imagination in a poem and it
simplicity. On the subject of how a poem should present its theme, Marianne s Poetry and Archibald s
Ars Poetica, have very different views. In Ars Poetica, Archibald literates that poems should be so
absolutely stunning that they don t have to explain themselves, sort of like a piece of art. By this, he
means that the poem doesn t have to convey a very obvious meaning. On the other hand, in Marianne
Moore s poem Poetry, she believes that a good, genuine, poem shouldn t be so complex and hard to

Quilting
The Feminist Dynamic of Lucille Clifton
Quilting bees were occasions for women to gather bringing discarded scraps of material, which they
masterfully transformed, into works of art. The bee was also a social gathering where women told
tales, exchanged ideas, and encouraged one another. Lucille Clifton s collection of poetry entitled
Quilting continues the wonderful tradition by skillfully bringing together poems that entertain, inform,
and encourage. Two of Clifton s poems, eve s version and a woman who loves, are excellent examples
of the quilting process where material is re worked to reveal a perspective that is female. The poem,
eve s version defies the negative issues that have arisen from the Christian tradition of ... Show more

Feminine sensuality and the feminist voice have been effectively subverted in this example of the
perfect woman.
Lucille Clifton redresses the Christian narrative in her poem, eve s version. She begins the poem by
asserting that women are responsible for maintaining control over their lives. Genesis, according to
Clifton, establishes that Lucifer is the creation of the female mind. Eve is given the power to tell her
own story and she states that, smooth talker / slides into my dreams / and fills them with apple (74).
Lucifer is not viewed as a powerful being but as the product of Eve s dream. The dream is an illusion
while Eve is the reality and the source of power in the text. Eve accepts ownership of the dream; it is
hers and Clifton makes it clear that Eve is in control of Lucifer and the apple. She avoids the
traditional trap of ignorance that society has perpetuated with the male version of the creation myth.
The control of the apple is very significant. The apple has always been a symbol of the basis for man s
problems. The apple in Clifton s poem is a metaphor for feminine sensuality and alludes to the
feminist power dynamic. The truth about the apple is revealed by Eve, who states,
apple snug as my breast
in the palm of my hand apple sleek apple sweet and bright in my mouth. (74)
It is apparent that Eve has control of the apple; it

The Civil Rights Activist Malcolm X
The future belongs to those who prepare for it today said Malcolm X ( 1960 s). To fully understand
what Malcolm X was trying to say, one would have to understand what future really means. Future:
the time or a period of time following the moment of speaking or writing; time regarded as still to
come (Merriam). An interpretation of this is that one should prepare for the future, so that when the
future becomes the present, a person knows she or he did everything thing he could have to make
today better than yesterday. The future was always a very big concept for the Civil Rights Activist.
The future was always something the Civil Rights Activist wanted to concur by making equal rights
for people of all races, and gender. They conquered the future by getting the Jim Crow laws
abolished, and many other things like the end of discrimination. To some, the 1960 s was the golden
era for Civil Rights because of events like Bloody Sunday, and the Greensboro sit ins. These
movements, and many others, led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. However, many would question if
the law is still used today. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is indeed still relevant today in education,
politics, and in the workplace.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a very important law that changed a lot of things for many people of
different races, genders, and religions. The law basically outlaws discrimination based on race, color,
religion, sex, or national origin in the United States of America ( 1960 s ).

The Effects Of Prenatal Hormones On The Developing Fetus
Why some people are attracted to members of their own sex whereas others are attracted to members
of the opposite sex is no known cause or reason. There is belief to it possible contributing from
genetics, hormonal and the environmental influences. One study stated that there is a 50 percent
chance that if one identical twin is homosexual or bisexual, the other twin is too. Similar findings lead
that some researchers estimate that sexual orientation is 30 to 70 percent genetic (Mustanski, Chivers,
Bailey, 2002). Another research suggests that sexual orientation is impacted by a gene or genes found
on the X chromosome. Though genetic tendencies for homosexuality may be passed from mothers to
their children (Rahman Wilson, 2003). During human evolution, homosexuality was developed to
minimize competition between males for a limited number of potential female mates (Schulling,
2004). A different possibility is that prenatal hormone levels influence the developing fetus (Levay,
2011). According to the prenatal hormonal theory of homosexuality, some male fetuses are exposed to
too little testosterone. Similarly, some female fetuses are exposed to too much testosterone. These
differences, in turn, can impact sexual orientation (Mustanski, Chivers, Bailey, 2002). Regardless,
homosexuality is not caused by hormone imbalances in adulthood; the hormone levels of most gay
men and lesbians are within the normal range (Banks Gartrell, 1995). Hormonal imbalances

Marge Piercy Barbie Doll Essay
Life is Beauty and Beauty is Death Barbie dolls, beautiful inventions used in children s play for
imaginative growth. Something so small and delicate aides in the challenge in many of today s
women, trying to become like the plastic doll: slender, pretty, and perfect as if made by a machine.
Marge Piercy illustrates in her poem Barbie Doll that some women are willing to sacrifice everything
to become pretty and flawless. Throughout the poem Marge Piercy incorporates the literature devices
tone, theme, topic, to inform the reader the implications of beauty. The tone of Barbie Doll is filled
with sarcasm. The tone of sarcasm is improved by there being an omnipresent speaker. Therefore, the
speaker is someone watching what has happened rather than the girl speaking who is going through
the events. This helps develop the sarcasm because the speaker s sentence structure is choppy and the

Interpreter Of Maladies By Jhumpa Lahiri
In Interpreter of Maladies , Jhumpa Lahiri uses both art and language as symbols of the difficulty of
belonging when stuck between two or more cultures. Born in London from Indian parents, then raised
in the United States, Lahiri puts in this story her own feeling or removal into the characters: The Das,
visiting a country that has become more foreign than homely; and Mr. Kapasi, who struggles to claim
his identity through language and translation. Bilbro argues that a lot of Lahiri scholarhip overlooks
the importance of dealing with one s tradition in working towards a postnational identity (382).
Indeed, this process of initiation is particularly present in Interpreter of Maladies , where the Das act
of taking a tour shows a certain will to engage with this tradition and heritage. If an active engagement
with tradition allows us to participate both in the continued formation of our identity and in the
formation of the tradition that is being handed down , the power of this act is however tarnished by the
family s lack of active and interested engagement with the local art and culture. Their original interest
is a step towards integration, but it is not enough to make them an integral part of Indian tradition and
its transmission.
The Das are indeed so removed from Indian culture that they can only see it through an occidental
lens, different to each of them. As a professor, Mr. Das engages with the world around him through
books. Throughout the story, he is

The Issue Of Annexation Movements Inside Canada
Isn t it sad to see a Parliament building burnt on the night of April 25th, 1849 to mark as one of our
historical importance of establishing Canada? The definition of annexation is to take over and
acquiring another state. Usually, it is implied that the territory and population being annexed is the
smaller and the weakest of the two merging state. By definition, Manifesto is a public declaration of
policy and aims. Annexation movements inside Canada were usually inspired by dissatisfaction with
Britain s colonial government of Canada. For example, a groups of Irish immigrants took the route of
attempting to annex the peninsula between the Detroit and Niagara Rivers to the U.S. by force in 1837
1838. The War of 1812 built up hatred overtime between the Americans and the British. But as a
result, there were no territorial changes. Another significant event before the Annexation Manifesto
was the Rebellion of 1837. It caused a backfire which led to a massive violence when Lower and
Upper Canada took arms to achieve a responsible government. Although the Rebellions of 1837 were
motivated in part by this type of dissatisfaction, Canadian resentment of British rule never reached the
degree that led to the American Revolution in 1775. Notably, Canada s population grew rapidly in the
late 18th and early 19th centuries. Canada s population grew due to United Empire Loyalists, who left
the American colonies during the Revolution because of their loyalty to Great Britain. In

Dandelion Wine, written by Ray Bradbury, is the story of Douglas Spaulding and the events of his
1928 summer. Over the next few months Douglas has multiple revelations, all while experiencing
traumatic incidents that make him question everything he knows. Some of the major revelations that
he encounters include realizing that both he is alive, and also that some day he will have to die.

news that made him see the world in front of him so much clearer than ever before. After the shock of

Theme of Fate in Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare Essay
Some people may not believe that destiny is something that truthfully exists in the world. These
people doubt that there is anything that is actually meant to be, or supposed to happen, thinking that
there is always a way around troubling predicaments, knowing that it is not necessary to turn out just
one certain way. They trust that whatever occurs in their lives comes as a result of the decisions that
they make with their own free will. Others believe that whatever happens during the course of their
lives is inevitable and every event is laid out before them like a road map to life, in other words, fate.
William Shakespeare s play, Romeo and Juliet has fate as an exceptionally crucial element which
makes fate as important as any ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is because of fate that they meet because Romeo says it himself. The final deaths of the lovers is the
consequence that he is talking about and the bitterness that starts the pathway to their ultimate tragedy
is their first encounter, since they are supposed to be opposing enemies. It is also evident that Romeo
cannot make intelligent decisions for himself when he says: ?Tut, I have lost myself. I am not here. /
This is not Romeo. He?s somewhere else.?(Romeo and Juliet I i, 205 206). Romeo says he is not
himself and that his mind is off somewhere else. As fate would have it, Romeo rushes head on into
situations that were out of his control .For these reasons, Romeo and Juliet s first meeting was sure to
happen, fate being the most powerful force at work, determining their future. Romeo and Juliet?s first
meeting was utterly coincidental. Neither person had the intention to find each other. It was fate that
had Romeo to see her at that exact point in time when he asked the server who she was and the server
could not tell him. When Romeo discovers who Juliet is, he says to himself, O dear account! My life
is my foe s debt. (Romeo and Juliet I v, 132) Despite the fact that they were born into feuding families,
Romeo can t help but love Juliet because he already loves her

The Savior of The Court After God and my father, I respect Larry Bird more than anyone, said
basketball legend, Earvin Magic Johnson. With the odds set against him, a country boy from the
basketball hotbed of Indiana, Bird was able to make a name for himself and has left an impact on the
basketball world like no other. Creating an image was hard for Bird; he dropped out of Indiana
University after just twenty four days because he was unable to adjust to the crowded university
culture. Bird worked as a garbage man after he dropped out, forgoing his basketball career to spend
time at home. Bird loved his time as a garbage man, where he learned to enjoy the simpler parts of

Bird had a rough road to success, when Larry Bird entered the National Basketball Association (NBA)
he was the Hick from French Lick, a country boy coming to live in the big city ( Larry Bird ).
Throughout Bird s basketball career he was known as the white boy that came out of the heart of the
Indiana basketball world (Katzeff). Scouts believed that he wasn t extremely fast, not tall enough, and
not a primetime jumper. Bird proved scouts and critics all over the world wrong due to his extreme
dedication to the game. He shot five hundred free throws on a daily basis because he knew that if he
committed to becoming great, he would indeed do so. Bird spent hours upon hours studying the finer
details of the game. To become a good rebounder, he learned all he could about how the ball would
deflect off of the backboard, studying every angle possible until he mastered the art of the rebound (
Larry Bird, 3). Larry never thought that he was skilled enough, so he would use every off season to
work through his weaknesses and strengthen his strengths. Even though he rapidly established himself
as an NBA superstar, he always hustled for loose balls, played rugged defense, and dominated inside
the paint (under the hoop). Most big time NBA players are remembered solely for their offensive play,
but not Larry Bird. Larry described his work ethic in one of his most famous quotes, Push yourself
again and again. Don t give an inch until the final buzzer sounds ( Larry Bird ) Bird was truly an
inspiration to all, without hardly any naturally given talents, he was able to prove to the entire world
that a little bit of practice can go a long way. With a work ethic like no other, Larry Bird will be
remembered for an eternity by friends, family, fans, and people all over the

The Archetype Of Theseus As A Hero
Heroes are inspirational figures in stories that relay relatable messages. Some of the most famous
heroes include Harry Potter, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. In greek mythology, Theseus, like
Superman or Harry Potter, is also considered a hero. Theseus was the son of Poseidon who went to
Athens to meet his supposed father, the king. In hopes of freeing him of his debt, he travels to Crete
where Minos resided and killed the minotaur whom Aegeus was to feed 7 each of the most beautiful
maidens and courageous men in his kingdom. Theseus is considered a hero for he possesses qualities
of a hero and his/her journey. Theseus fits the hero archetype because he is clever, which means that
he has situational intelligence; he is determined, which means that he is firmly set in opinion or
purpose; and he has a supernatural helper, which is someone who aids the hero in his/her quest usually
by providing them with a talisman or advice.
Theseus is clever in that he is able to figure out a solution hastily given a situation. On his journey to
Athens, Theseus encountered Sciron whom he had heard of as someone who fed passersby to his giant
turtle. In the text, it states, When the giant kicked, Theseus pulled, dodging swiftly out of the way as
the enormous body hurled over him, over and down, splashing the water cliff high as it hit (Evslin
153). In order to avoid being fed to the turtle, he used the giant s kick tactic against him and sent him
hurling down into the water. This

Boeing Adopted The Radical Change Approach For Designing...
Boeing adopted the radical change approach for designing and developing the 787 Dreamliner not
only to attempt to create new aircraft through the innovative design and advanced material, but it also
drastically changed the production process. With a $10 billion dollar project in mind, the goal was to
reduce the financial risks involved as well as the new product development cycle time. Meanwhile,
Boeing produced a remarkably complicated supply chain that included greater than fifty partners in
over 100 locations all across the globe. In addition to the complicated supply chain, they experimented
with various firms in diverse areas to align complementary skill sets. Furthermore, this was the first
time the company outsourced the two most crucial parts of the plane, the wings and the fuselage. The
first risk of adopting the radical change approach include depending on a large scale, global supply
chain in which correspondence complications may compromise execution. Secondly, introducing a
fundamentally different supply chain could cause unforeseen complications. Finally, an enormous
delay in original delivery could compromise integrity as well as company dependence. The decision to
radically change the approach was a high risk and high reward initiative. On one hand, deciding to
implement the radical change approach dramatically reduced financial risks and decreased product
development cycle time. However, the decision delayed original launch date, temporarily

The Flaws And Human Harms Of Animal Experimentation
Thousands of animals every year are euthanized due to animal testing. Animal testing is cruel and an
inhumane way to torture animals for mankind s own benefit. Because of our selfish, millions of
animals suffered a vicious and painful death in the name of research every year. Animals are
frequently used in biological and medical research, in the testing of drugs and commercial products,
and in educational exercises in the sciences. So, can we ask ourselves, deeply in mind, that is it worth

According to The Flaws and Human Harms of Animal Experimentation , Aysha Akhtar, the author,
point out the discordance between human diseases and animal models of diseases. Because of the
interspecies differences in physiology and genetics, it is easily that human might get worse if they take
those antidotes which are only suitable for animals. He quotes an example of human suffering
resulting from animal experimentation in 2006. A drug calls TGN 1412 was tested in mice, rabbits, rat

injected with this immunomodulatory drug suffered a severe adverse reaction resulting from a life
threatening cytokine storm that led to catastrophic systemic organ failure within a minute. This
compound had the opposite effect in human, but those experimental animals do not. If
experimentation using chimpanzees and other NHPs, our closest genetic cousins, are unreliable, how
can we expect research using other animals to be reliable? Akhtar stated. It is a severe problem to all
man kinds. Will you have the trial that the drug only tested safe and effective in

The Quality Risk Management Plan
The quality risk management plan for this case study scenario includes identifying areas of risk and
healthcare errors, in order to protect future patients from having their safety compromised. The case
study describes two patients who received wrong site surgery; which is considered a sentinel event
preventable and should never occur. According to a report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality (AHRQ) Patient Safety Network (2015) titled Wrong Site, Wrong Procedure, and Wrong
Patient Surgery, wrong site surgery is the most frequent type of sentinel event. It is approximated that
wrong site surgeries take place forty times per week in America (Clark, 2011).
Wrong site surgery has been identified as a top priority in improving quality of care and increasing
patient safety. As such, The Joint Commission 2015 Hospital National Patient Safety Goal includes the
prevention of mistakes in surgery. The goal is to perform the correct surgery on the correct patient at
the correct site, prior marking of the surgical site, and performing a time out just prior to
commencement of the surgery. The purpose of this paper is to create a root cause analysis, present
recommendations for improvement, present recommendations to prevent wrong site surgery, identify
the stakeholders and role players, present root cause analysis charts, and provide an overall of lessons
learned throughout the course. Root Cause Analysis A root cause analysis is a method used to identify

Australia s Health Status Of Indigenous Peoples
There is an indisputable relationship between the enduring impact of colonisation and current health
status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet, 2016).
The society of Indigenous peoples have been affected by the British colonisation in 1788; highlighted
through all aspects of Aboriginal lifestyle, culture and beliefs being changed by the settlers . (E.
Bourke Bourke, 1995) Over many years it has been an ongoing task to improve the health status of

Thus, the breakdown of family and community groups made it difficult for Indigenous peoples to have
such support from family in times of stress, depression, disconnection from culture and society etc.
Therefore, if families and community groups are being constantly broken down the support factor that
comes from family is completely ruled out. In saying this, not being able to speak the English
language and being forbidden to speak their traditional language did not help during these times as
communication is an important tool when seeking support and comfort, making it difficult to receive
the support which Indigenous peoples required in these times. The breakdown of families and
communities also resulted in loss of connection to the country and land which was important to
Indigenous peoples (C. Bourke Edwards, 1998). These historical issues mentioned are just some of the
many issues Indigenous peoples experienced which have now led to inequalities for Indigenous
peoples health and wellbeing. There is little knowledge about the specific cause of social determinants
of health in Indigenous peoples, but what is known is that in Indigenous peoples from children
through to adults elements of physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing are assured to be
impacted by a large extent of social determinants (Reading Wien, 2009). Some of

from it and put it into practice in their own lives.
Summary
At the beginning of the book, a man named Michael makes his way to a class reunion and decides to
meet with his classmates afterwards to learn more about what is going on in their lives. As him and his
classmates are gathered they start talking about how things did not pan out like they thought they
would in high school. It was here in the story where you could see that the main theme of the book is
Change . Michael and his classmates had mentioned that we don t want to change when things change
(Johnson, 1998, pg. 1). It was then that Michael mentioned a story that had to deal with change and
decided to tell it to his classmates. (Johnson, 1998)
The story begins with four main characters, which are Hem, Haw, Sniff, and Scurry. Sniff and Scurry

Roles Of The Registered Nurse
Introduction
In 2010 and 2011 inclusive, approximately 2.4 million hospitalisations within Australia were for the
purpose of surgery. Of the approximated 2.4 million, 1.9 million of these were classified as elective
admissions (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2010 11). Australia is shown to have an ageing
population, (Australian Bureau of Statistics. 2006) which indicates an increasing percentage of
patients undertaking surgery are elderly with numerous comorbidities. In considering these it pre
operative assessment as a means of risk management prior to surgery seeks to reduce the potential
probability of perioperative complications.
The Role of the Registered Nurse in Pre operative Assessment
The role of the registered nurse in Preoperative assessment is fundamentally to undertake a clinical
risk assessment where the health of a patient is evaluated to determine if a person is fit to undergo the
anaesthetic for a planned operation. Preoperative patient assessment is essential in identifying patient
risk factors, provision of information and education, as well as the facilitation of any required
measurements or laboratory studies, such as blood tests or electrocardiographs (Hines, Munday,
Kynoch, 2013). A well designed pre operative framework will decrease the likelihood of failure to
advance to surgery owing to communication and/or administration errors (Rai Pandit, 2003).

Social Expectations In Lord Of The Flies
People are used to living in an orderly, civilized society with many different social expectations and
structures. A dependency is built on this civil life, and people find it difficult to live their lives without
rules and order. The children in William Golding s Lord of the Flies come from a life like this, from
school in England. When this orderly life, full of expectations and civility, is taken away from them,
they are forced to adapt and reach for their most basic human instincts. They attempt to maintain a
grip on societal structures but eventually slip into a violent fight for survival. As the earliest of humans
did, the boys live without society or civilization shaping their behavior. The deepest instincts of
humans are based on those behaviors developed and utilized by the earliest of humans. When societal
structure and social expectations are stripped away, humans will revert to their deepest and most
primal instincts. People will often conform to social norms, but they will stop when they are no longer
expected to. It is easy for people to just follow what everybody else is doing and what they are
expected to do; this is what society is built on and how civilization stays intact. According to a 2011
Stanford University philosophy article: We prefer to comply with the norm on the basis of having
certain expectation (Bicchieri Muldoon). This indicates that when there are no longer any expectations
to follow, people will not maintain the behaviors previously

Becoming A Good Writer
To me, the best writing is when you can t put the book down and want to keep reading more and more.
It is when you can make a personal connection to whatever the characters are going through in their
life. To make a good piece of writing you have to have many things, but most importantly you should
have good vocabulary, punctuation, and sentence fluency so that it is easy to follow.
I know that writing will always be an important thing in my life. I m taking Foundations of Writing to
prepare myself for college and to learn how to become a better writer. I will use what I learned in this
class while I am writing college papers or even for a future job.
When I am given an assignment, the first thing I do is think about how I am going to write it. Then I
begin writing down my thoughts until I can t think of anything else to add. When I have no new ideas
I start to get bored and then I begin to procrastinate. Procrastinating is one of my biggest weaknesses.
I always wait until just a few days before the paper is due to really start working on it hard. Another
weakness of mine is that it s hard for me to put my thoughts into words and sentences that make sense.
Something I have never understood are semicolons. I don t know when I should use them and when I

Affordable And Adequate Health Insurance For Children
History
Affordable and adequate health insurance for children in the United States a vital public good.
Research indicates that children who have health insurance have better health outcomes in their
childhood, adolescence and adulthood. (cite). During the mid 1900 s there were more 11 million
uninsured children in the United States (Institute of Medicine, 1998). In what yr Senators Edward
Kennedy and Orrin Hatch worked together to introduce a bill to provide healthcare insurance for
children (Milliigan, 2009). Initially, their bill was not passed because it did not work in accordance
with the existing Balanced Budget Act. After much deliberation, in 1997, Congress enacted State
Children s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Funding for SCHIP is from both the federal government and the state government. To finance the
policy it was based on Federal Medical Assistance Program (FMAP) Explain this part better I don t
understand). FMAP was deisigned as an incentive for the states to expand the health insurance for
children based on Medicaid, Congress came up with an enhanced federal matching rate for SCHIP at
15% points higher than the Medicaid rate. For example, if a state has a 50% match rate for Medicaid,
it would receive a 65% match rate for Medicaid for SCHIP. (cite) The policy has cost the federal
government almost $40 million over a ten year span. The federal government grants and allocates the
funds for SCHIP based on the number of uninsured children in families whose income is below the
federal poverty level (FPL). The individual states are responsible for implementing the program based
on analysis of ineligibility, enrollment and disenrollment.
Strengths
SCHIP has made notable achievements. An important strength is the flexibility afforded to the states
in executing the policy which led to positive reception and acceptance of the program. The
significance of states latitude over program design, gives states the ability to design the program based
on the inordinate needs of children in that state. Additionally, not every state has the same needs and
political realities to overcome.

explanation of the mosaic. Goethe believes that Alexander appears as a conqueror while Darius is in
horror. Badian, in this paper, attempts to show that Darius is in the prominent position and Alexander
does not appear a conqueror or a hero. Badian starts his argument by discussing the similarities of a
realistic action painting, like this Mosaic, and a snapshot. This means that the artist is focusing on one
moment in time, and chooses what he wants to show. Badian then start to talk about the mosaic. He
shows how the movement is from right to left, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Darius is taller than everyone else and learns forward towards the enemy. The horror on his face is
from his seeing the sacrifice his noble made for him. Alexander, however, cannot seem to be able to
control his horse and his helmet has fallen off. This makes him appear as unheroic. The tree in the
mosaic is another piece of Baldin s argument. In order for Darius to use his cavalry, Darius cleared the
ground of the battlefield. This means the tree in the composition was obvious added by the artists and
therefore must have a meaning. One interpretation Baldin gives is that the tree signifies the destruction
of Alexander s wars. Badian ends by discussing the artist. He identifies the commissioner as
Cassander, a King of Macadoia from 305 297 BC, and who Alexander treated poorly. Badian believes
this poor treatment caused Cassander to have a bias while commissioning the mosaic. Therefore, he
wanted a piece that did not glorify Alexander, even if he won every war against the persians. Finally,
this explains why the mosaic show a time when the Persians are dominating the action and while
Alexander looks unheroic, even though Alexander wins in the

Film Noir Film Analysis
Film Noir is a style that first originated during the early 1940s, influenced by the tumultuous social
and political environment of World War II. These style of films was a subversion from the
conventional gangster films of the 1920s and 1930s. The resurgence of Noir style films in the 1970s
retained the themes of crime, vice and moral ambiguity, but updated the content due to the relaxation
of the Production Code. In this dissertation, the origins of film noir and its techniques will be
examined, with the films The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949), and L.A Confidential (Curtis Hanson,
1997) contrasted to highlight the impact of the Production Code. According to Paul Schrader s Notes
on Film Noir (1972), there are four catalysts that spawned the film noir style: Post war
disillusionment, a desire for realism, Germanic influences and the hardboiled tradition1. During World
War II, the prominence of dark, brooding Film Noir was overpowered by the American propaganda
produced, but changed after the tragedy of World War II, as American audiences accepted a less
optimistic view of society. This desire for realism is highlighted by the artificial optimism of previous
films pre World War II. Furthermore, The hardboiled narratives of the 1930s influenced Film Noir
through their tough , defeatist attitude of characters who reside in a cynical atmosphere. In terms of
cinema, Film Noir borrows cinematic techniques and style from German Expressionism, which refers
to a film

Example Of Culture Jamming
This essay will unpack the ways in which hegemonic discourses are subverted to present
counterhegemonic discourses focusing on the Tokolos stencil on page two. It shall equally consider
the potential and limitations of such a practice in a South African context. Finally, this essay will argue
that culture jamming brings about liberal pluralism and leads to a critical pedagogy by encouraging
people to do reverse engineering and question the dominant ideologies set in place.
Culture jamming is a form of media activism where hegemonic discourses are disputed though the
subversion of media texts to create a new counterhegemonic meaning. According to Klein, it is the
practice of parodying advertisements and hijacking billboards in order to drastically alter their
messages (2001: 280). Another definition is, A form of media activism that subverts and reworks the
intended meaning of existing media texts or parodies major corporations, public figures, and their
media images (Stadler O Shaughnessy, 2005: 188).
Hegemony in this case means the success of the dominant classes in presenting their definition of
reality, their view of the world, in such a way that it is accepted by other classes as common sense .
The general consensus is that it is the only sensible way of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It reworks the original meaning of existing texts. It brings into play the public s knowledge of brand
and subverts it to pass across a particular message. For culture jamming to be successful, the original
message and the art work or typography must be recognisable. Culture jamming often uses the very
platform used by the advertiser to create a new message via mimesis. It can be described as some sort
of semiotic imitation game. The hegemonic signifier is hijacked and the signified changes. The visual
codes are subtly subverted so that the final product isn t very different from the original but the

  • 2. How Is Situational Irony Used In The Scarlet Letter Novelist, Ernest Hemingway, in his novel, The Scarlet Letter, writes about the Puritan life and how some characters with through a rough path of disobeying the Puritan culture. He has many characters that represent many different things in his novel. Hemingway uses an abundance of rhetorical strategies. One of the ones that he uses is irony. He uses different types of irony such as verbal, situational and dramatic to shows the imperfect world that the Puritans really had. Verbal irony is when the speakers says one thing but means another, or saying something without realizing its significance. An example of verbal irony would be when Hester stands on the scaffold. Dimmesdale wants her to tell her sins. Dimmesdale tells her that her silence would only add hypocrisy to sin. This is ironic because he does not know how much hypocrisy his life will be. Another example of verbal irony is when Pearl asked Hester, Why does Dimmesdale cover his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that characters in the story do not know. An example would be when Hester tries to convince the governor to let her keep Pearl because they do not think that she is a fit mother. She wants Dimmesdale to talk for her because he knows her best. This is dramatic irony because everybody else thinks he knows her best because he is the reverend but the reader knows that he actually committed the same sin and their equal. Another example of dramatic irony would be when Dimmesdale becomes sick and moves in with Chillingworth because he is the town s doctor and his suppose to nurse him back to better. Chillingworth is only making Dimmesdale sickness worse. He reminds him of how bad it is to commit sin and what it does to you. It is also dramatic irony because the reader knows that Dimmesdale is Hester s father before anybody else knows. Hawthorne uses dramatic irony to create the story and all of its good ... • 5. Glass Blowing in the First Century The production and creation of beautiful art pieces using glass only began after glass blowing was used in the First Century BC. Two unique artists have used this medium to create work that is both beyond its time and surpasses many other glass works. The first artist, Louis Comfort Tiffany, was the son of the founder of Tiffany and Company, Charles Lewis Tiffany. His work focuses on aesthetic beauty while encompassing the techniques he established throughout his career. The second artist, Beverly Fishman, is an artist from Philadelphia who has not only made a name for herself, but has also accepted the Artist in Residence position at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Both of these individuals have a strong passion and drive that elevates their work to the next level. The difference between the work of these two artists lies in the conceptual realm. Connecting work to outside concepts gives the artist versatility, while aesthetically pleasing work reaches the viewer on a much deeper level. Both of these strategies allow the artist to express themself, but have profoundly different influences on the receptive audience. Louis Comfort Tiffany is known for his array of works, which includes both glass and non glass pieces. He not only designed stained glass windows, lamps, glass mosaics and blown glass, but he is also known for his work in ceramics, enamels, jewelry and metalwork. Companies embrace and adopt telecommunicating practices, as the benefits are clear. For this reason, telework was chosen as a project to be implemented in the business in order to gain profit and in turn reduce turnover. Berkeley College conducted a comprehensive program that analyzed companies such as AT T. This study was conducted to discern the percentage of savings that would result from such action. Companies should review their quality of work of the employee and their productivity levels. Telework can be said to increase productivity of the employees, but it is possible that if telecommuting put into place that the quality of the employees work could begin to suffer. • 10. The Pros And Cons Of The American Civil War Railroads are not nearly as popular in the United States as they are in European countries. Prior to the American Civil War, railroads were a fairly new, and untried, invention. Compared to carriages and the other modes of transportation at the time, the railroad was far superior. Due to this superiority, they were used to transport soldiers, food, and supplies. A systemic railroad began to spread all across the nation, and both sides of the war used them to their advantage. The railroad construction started as soon as possible. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was founded in 1828 and its first section of rails was open in 1830. At its peak, The B O Railroad spread from the east coast all the way to the Illinois, and was over 5,550 miles long! In 1831, the state of Maryland granted the B O Railroad and charter to begin construction of a line connecting Maryland to Washington D.C. The south, which was mostly a society built on agriculture, was at a huge disadvantage when it came to railroads. Two thirds of all the railroads in the nation at the time were in the north. The southern states couldn t transport anything as easy as the north, and their income mostly relied on the exportation of their crops. Without this source of income, the Confederacy s economy was crippled. Arguably, railroads were the reason for the South s eventual defeat. By 1861, 22,000 miles of track had been laid in the Northern states and 9,500 miles in the South. In the south, there were cities that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Indians use communication to tighten up their relationships and to preserve harmony but not to exchange information. • 12. Pearl Harbor Reaction Paper The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was the single most important event of the century and there are many lessons learned from this event that can be applied to modern day military principles. Complacency on the part of the United States Government and senior military officials played a key role in this attack being successful. No one ever thought the Japanese, or any other nation for that matter, would directly attack the United States. Had the intelligence officials at the time utilized the high impact, low probability critical thinking model to identify those high payoff targets, then maybe the attack could have been prevented. In terms of technology, the United States had a distinct advantage at the time, especially since the Japanese communications code was not only broken, but remained unchanged for a significant amount of time. There were plenty of indicators that were collected by United States intelligence activities and by Washington; however, most of the critical information collected was never appropriately passed to the people that needed it most, the commanders in the field. And finally, when the commanders in the field were weary of an impending attack, their request for additional men, weapons, and equipment went unanswered despite Washington having enough information to substantiate the concern. Feminine sensuality and the feminist voice have been effectively subverted in this example of the perfect woman. Lucille Clifton redresses the Christian narrative in her poem, eve s version. She begins the poem by asserting that women are responsible for maintaining control over their lives. Genesis, according to Clifton, establishes that Lucifer is the creation of the female mind. Eve is given the power to tell her own story and she states that, smooth talker / slides into my dreams / and fills them with apple (74). Lucifer is not viewed as a powerful being but as the product of Eve s dream. The dream is an illusion while Eve is the reality and the source of power in the text. Eve accepts ownership of the dream; it is hers and Clifton makes it clear that Eve is in control of Lucifer and the apple. She avoids the traditional trap of ignorance that society has perpetuated with the male version of the creation myth. The control of the apple is very significant. The apple has always been a symbol of the basis for man s problems. The apple in Clifton s poem is a metaphor for feminine sensuality and alludes to the feminist power dynamic. To fully understand what Malcolm X was trying to say, one would have to understand what future really means. Future: the time or a period of time following the moment of speaking or writing; time regarded as still to come (Merriam). An interpretation of this is that one should prepare for the future, so that when the future becomes the present, a person knows she or he did everything thing he could have to make today better than yesterday. The future was always a very big concept for the Civil Rights Activist. The future was always something the Civil Rights Activist wanted to concur by making equal rights for people of all races, and gender. They conquered the future by getting the Jim Crow laws abolished, and many other things like the end of discrimination. To some, the 1960 s was the golden era for Civil Rights because of events like Bloody Sunday, and the Greensboro sit ins. These movements, and many others, led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. There is belief to it possible contributing from genetics, hormonal and the environmental influences. One study stated that there is a 50 percent chance that if one identical twin is homosexual or bisexual, the other twin is too. Similar findings lead that some researchers estimate that sexual orientation is 30 to 70 percent genetic (Mustanski, Chivers, Bailey, 2002). Another research suggests that sexual orientation is impacted by a gene or genes found on the X chromosome. Though genetic tendencies for homosexuality may be passed from mothers to their children (Rahman Wilson, 2003). During human evolution, homosexuality was developed to minimize competition between males for a limited number of potential female mates (Schulling, 2004). A different possibility is that prenatal hormone levels influence the developing fetus (Levay, 2011). According to the prenatal hormonal theory of homosexuality, some male fetuses are exposed to too little testosterone. Similarly, some female fetuses are exposed to too much testosterone. These differences, in turn, can impact sexual orientation (Mustanski, Chivers, Bailey, 2002). Interpreter Of Maladies By Jhumpa Lahiri In Interpreter of Maladies , Jhumpa Lahiri uses both art and language as symbols of the difficulty of belonging when stuck between two or more cultures. Born in London from Indian parents, then raised in the United States, Lahiri puts in this story her own feeling or removal into the characters: The Das, visiting a country that has become more foreign than homely; and Mr. Kapasi, who struggles to claim his identity through language and translation. Bilbro argues that a lot of Lahiri scholarhip overlooks the importance of dealing with one s tradition in working towards a postnational identity (382). Indeed, this process of initiation is particularly present in Interpreter of Maladies , where the Das act of taking a tour shows a certain will to engage with this tradition and heritage. If an active engagement with tradition allows us to participate both in the continued formation of our identity and in the formation of the tradition that is being handed down , the power of this act is however tarnished by the family s lack of active and interested engagement with the local art and culture. The Issue Of Annexation Movements Inside Canada Isn t it sad to see a Parliament building burnt on the night of April 25th, 1849 to mark as one of our historical importance of establishing Canada? The definition of annexation is to take over and acquiring another state. Usually, it is implied that the territory and population being annexed is the smaller and the weakest of the two merging state. By definition, Manifesto is a public declaration of policy and aims. Annexation movements inside Canada were usually inspired by dissatisfaction with Britain s colonial government of Canada. For example, a groups of Irish immigrants took the route of attempting to annex the peninsula between the Detroit and Niagara Rivers to the U.S. by force in 1837 1838. The War of 1812 built up hatred overtime between the Americans and the British. But as a result, there were no territorial changes. Another significant event before the Annexation Manifesto was the Rebellion of 1837. It caused a backfire which led to a massive violence when Lower and Upper Canada took arms to achieve a responsible government. Although the Rebellions of 1837 were motivated in part by this type of dissatisfaction, Canadian resentment of British rule never reached the degree that led to the American Revolution in 1775. • 32. Australia s Health Status Of Indigenous Peoples There is an indisputable relationship between the enduring impact of colonisation and current health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet, 2016). The society of Indigenous peoples have been affected by the British colonisation in 1788; highlighted through all aspects of Aboriginal lifestyle, culture and beliefs being changed by the settlers . (E. Bourke Bourke, 1995) Over many years it has been an ongoing task to improve the health status of Indigenous peoples in Australia, as there is a large difference in the health status of Indigenous Australians compared to non Indigenous Australians. Thus, the breakdown of family and community groups made it difficult for Indigenous peoples to have such support from family in times of stress, depression, disconnection from culture and society etc. Therefore, if families and community groups are being constantly broken down the support factor that comes from family is completely ruled out. In saying this, not being able to speak the English language and being forbidden to speak their traditional language did not help during these times as communication is an important tool when seeking support and comfort, making it difficult to receive the support which Indigenous peoples required in these times. The breakdown of families and communities also resulted in loss of connection to the country and land which was important to Indigenous peoples (C. Bourke Edwards, 1998). These historical issues mentioned are just some of the many issues Indigenous peoples experienced which have now led to inequalities for Indigenous peoples health and wellbeing. There is little knowledge about the specific cause of social determinants of health in Indigenous peoples, but what is known is that in Indigenous peoples from children through to adults elements of physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing are assured to be impacted by a large extent of social determinants (Reading Wien, 2009). Of the approximated 2.4 million, 1.9 million of these were classified as elective admissions (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2010 11). Australia is shown to have an ageing population, (Australian Bureau of Statistics. 2006) which indicates an increasing percentage of patients undertaking surgery are elderly with numerous comorbidities. In considering these it pre operative assessment as a means of risk management prior to surgery seeks to reduce the potential probability of perioperative complications. The Role of the Registered Nurse in Pre operative Assessment The role of the registered nurse in Preoperative assessment is fundamentally to undertake a clinical risk assessment where the health of a patient is evaluated to determine if a person is fit to undergo the anaesthetic for a planned operation. Preoperative patient assessment is essential in identifying patient risk factors, provision of information and education, as well as the facilitation of any required measurements or laboratory studies, such as blood tests or electrocardiographs (Hines, Munday, Kynoch, 2013). A well designed pre operative framework will decrease the likelihood of failure to advance to surgery owing to communication and/or administration errors (Rai Pandit, 2003). • 36. Social Expectations In Lord Of The Flies People are used to living in an orderly, civilized society with many different social expectations and structures. A dependency is built on this civil life, and people find it difficult to live their lives without rules and order. The children in William Golding s Lord of the Flies come from a life like this, from school in England. When this orderly life, full of expectations and civility, is taken away from them, they are forced to adapt and reach for their most basic human instincts. They attempt to maintain a grip on societal structures but eventually slip into a violent fight for survival. As the earliest of humans did, the boys live without society or civilization shaping their behavior. The deepest instincts of humans are based on those behaviors developed and utilized by the earliest of humans. When societal structure and social expectations are stripped away, humans will revert to their deepest and most primal instincts. People will often conform to social norms, but they will stop when they are no longer expected to. It is easy for people to just follow what everybody else is doing and what they are expected to do; this is what society is built on and how civilization stays intact. According to a 2011 Stanford University philosophy article: We prefer to comply with the norm on the basis of having certain expectation (Bicchieri Muldoon). It is when you can make a personal connection to whatever the characters are going through in their life. To make a good piece of writing you have to have many things, but most importantly you should have good vocabulary, punctuation, and sentence fluency so that it is easy to follow. I know that writing will always be an important thing in my life. I m taking Foundations of Writing to prepare myself for college and to learn how to become a better writer. I will use what I learned in this class while I am writing college papers or even for a future job. When I am given an assignment, the first thing I do is think about how I am going to write it. Then I begin writing down my thoughts until I can t think of anything else to add. When I have no new ideas I start to get bored and then I begin to procrastinate. Procrastinating is one of my biggest weaknesses. I always wait until just a few days before the paper is due to really start working on it hard. Another weakness of mine is that it s hard for me to put my thoughts into words and sentences that make sense. Something I have never understood are semicolons. I don t know when I should use them and when I should not. I would say that my biggest strengths are that I always write in complete sentences and use good vocabulary. ... For example, if a state has a 50% match rate for Medicaid, it would receive a 65% match rate for Medicaid for SCHIP. (cite) The policy has cost the federal government almost $40 million over a ten year span. The federal government grants and allocates the funds for SCHIP based on the number of uninsured children in families whose income is below the federal poverty level (FPL). The individual states are responsible for implementing the program based on analysis of ineligibility, enrollment and disenrollment. Strengths SCHIP has made notable achievements. An important strength is the flexibility afforded to the states in executing the policy which led to positive reception and acceptance of the program. The significance of states latitude over program design, gives states the ability to design the program based on the inordinate needs of children in that state. The only available information about the EDAS Server Side Hardware is that it runs on the USAHRC Data Center Mainframe (Human Resources Command, 2016). I imagine that this data center is something like the data center represented by SAP. There is certainly a server room. This room contains some sort of primary and secondary cooling. Badian first gives Goethe s explanation of the mosaic. Goethe believes that Alexander appears as a conqueror while Darius is in horror. Badian, in this paper, attempts to show that Darius is in the prominent position and Alexander does not appear a conqueror or a hero. Badian starts his argument by discussing the similarities of a realistic action painting, like this Mosaic, and a snapshot. This means that the artist is focusing on one moment in time, and chooses what he wants to show. Badian then start to talk about the mosaic. He shows how the movement is from right to left, or ... Alexander, however, cannot seem to be able to control his horse and his helmet has fallen off. This makes him appear as unheroic. The tree in the mosaic is another piece of Baldin s argument. In order for Darius to use his cavalry, Darius cleared the ground of the battlefield. This means the tree in the composition was obvious added by the artists and therefore must have a meaning. One interpretation Baldin gives is that the tree signifies the destruction of Alexander s wars. Badian ends by discussing the artist. He identifies the commissioner as Cassander, a King of Macadoia from 305 297 BC, and who Alexander treated poorly. Badian believes this poor treatment caused Cassander to have a bias while commissioning the mosaic. Therefore, he wanted a piece that did not glorify Alexander, even if he won every war against the persians. • 42. Film Noir Film Analysis Film Noir is a style that first originated during the early 1940s, influenced by the tumultuous social and political environment of World War II. These style of films was a subversion from the conventional gangster films of the 1920s and 1930s. The resurgence of Noir style films in the 1970s retained the themes of crime, vice and moral ambiguity, but updated the content due to the relaxation of the Production Code. In this dissertation, the origins of film noir and its techniques will be examined, with the films The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949), and L.A Confidential (Curtis Hanson, 1997) contrasted to highlight the impact of the Production Code. According to Paul Schrader s Notes on Film Noir (1972), there are four catalysts that spawned the film noir style: Post war disillusionment, a desire for realism, Germanic influences and the hardboiled tradition1. During World War II, the prominence of dark, brooding Film Noir was overpowered by the American propaganda produced, but changed after the tragedy of World War II, as American audiences accepted a less optimistic view of society. This desire for realism is highlighted by the artificial optimism of previous films pre World War II. Furthermore, The hardboiled narratives of the 1930s influenced Film Noir through their tough , defeatist attitude of characters who reside in a cynical atmosphere.
