Isthmus Of Panama
The formation of the Isthmus of Panama is seen today as one of the most transformative and
remarkable events of the Cenozoic. The formation of the land bridge that connects North and South
America and divides the Pacific and Atlantic oceans had profound affects on the climate,
atmosphere and the biodiversity of both marine and terrestrial organisms of the area encompassing
the Isthmus of Panama. It led to the Great American Biotic Interchange, which allowed for the
invasion of inhabitants from each side of the Americas. The dispersal of terrestrial organisms and
the vicariant separation of marine organisms produced dramatic transformations in the land
ecosystems of South America and Central America, which largely influenced the distribution...

The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), which is a measure of the efficacy and accuracy of
statistical models for a given data set, was applied to the two most commonly debated migration
models for Isthmus formation. One migration model consisted of a single rate shift at around 3.5
Ma, the once widely accepted timing for the formation of Isthmus. The other migration model
consists of two rate shifts at 25 Ma and 10 M, consistent with the initial collision of South America
and the Panama Block and the closure of the CAS, respectively. Results from this test revealed that
the migration model consisting of two rate shifts was a more accurate model for the formation of
the Isthmus of Panama. As seen in figures 1A D, migrations between North and South America
occurred in gradual pulses over millions of years rather than just a sudden burst of migration events
occurring after closure of the Isthmus around 3.5 Ma, as indicated by the dashed

Touch Of Zen
Discuss how the fight scene achieves its effect: The bamboo forest fight scene in the movie
Touch of Zen, achieves its effects by illustration of Yang as a powerful fighter through her
movements and fight tactics. The fight scene also paints Shi as a careful character wise enough
to know when he can win and how to do so. He clichГ© as noted by Shi that though good is
strong, evil is stronger is well illustrated in the scene (Teo, 2006). The successful dispatch of the
enemy by Shi and Yang after a rigorous battle reflects the journey good has to take to overcome
evil in the movie. How does the camera frame the scene, and how do the actors move within the
frame? (mise en scГЁne) The forest scene is framed using the 2.35.1 aspect ratio. This ratio

Explain How Has Jean Valjean Changed As He Interact With...
How has Jean Valjean changed as he interacted with other characters?
Jean Valjean has changed when he interacted with the Bishop of Digne. A little background on
these two characters is that the Bishop of Digne is the man who saves Jean Valjean with his
compassion. Jean Valjean is the hero and the main character in the movie. What was happening
during this scene is that Jean Valjeanjust got out of prison and he was looking for work and
nobody really accepted him because he just got out of prison and the Bishop let Jean Valjean in
his home. In this sense the Bishop of Digne just let Jean Valjean into his home and gave him food,
then while everyone was sleeping Jean Valjean stole silver that the Bishop of Digne owned, Jean

Persuasive Essay Seatbelt
I have been on several car accidents that could have taken my life away if I had not put that
seatbelt on. Seatbelts should be on every vehicle to provide protections to its drivers and its
passengers. Car manufacturers should enforce the use of a seatbelt. How does a seatbelt
provide protection? A seatbelt can be specifically helpful on a high speed crash. Seatbelts should
be worn at all times. A manufacturer should enforce it to start a car engine. All drivers would be
required to wear a seatbelt and if they do not then the car will not be able to start. It would require a
really good system so people cannot easily hack it or remove it. There would also no longer be a
fine for not wearing a seatbelt and people would like that. Seatbelts

Crime In Boston Essay
The crime rates in Boston are currently rated at 364.4 compared to a national average of 301.1(The
higher the number, the more crime). Boston has always been higher than the national average,
which is not unusual due to the size and popularity of the city. However, in recent years the city of
Boston has cut down on crimesignificantly and closed the gap between themselves and the
national average. In 2001 Boston s rating was a 602, so it is clear to see that they have been
making great strides towards beefing up their local security efforts. The cityhas also been on high

will ensure a smooth implementation of security measurements by the federal, state, and local

the Commonwealth of Boston enabled itself to support the security efforts necessary for a large

main hub for the federal, state and local safety agencies to communicate with the U.S. Secret
Service. The local safety agencies throughout Massachusetts have also teamed up to create Law

The Orthodox View Of Orthodox Church
Orthodox is a religion that is talked less among strong Christian believers. Many of the
population don t even know that it exists, youth, and old adults are more likely to discuss the
religion Catholicism. Directly following the social protocol, many think that orthodox is a
religion that died out long time ago and few never learns the history behind of its being in this
world. Unlike the other denominations, Orthodox churches have followed strict rules and
scriptures that have been passed down from generations. Many of my friends may say, Orthodox
is not a true religion. Stop wasting your time! As a member of the Orthodox faith for eighteen
years, I can only replay and say, You have no idea what you are talking about. In this DCA paper, I

I have always admired my faith, since birth I have been grown to believe Orthodox scriptures
and to follow the undying faith. I nearly never understood what certain motions of a priest during
a service or what some of the readings meant in my years as a child. The recognition of church faith

The Legacy Of John Caldwell Calhoun
John Caldwell Calhoun was born March 18th, 1782 in Abbeville, South Carolina. In the year
1807, John Calhoun received admission to the South Carolina bar and practiced law. The year
after, he was elected into the state legislature of South Carolina, where he served for two years
leading to his election to the U.S House of Representatives in the year 1810. In 1817, John
Calhoun was appointed as Secretary of War by President Monroe, in which during his term, he
made substantial changes to the War Department. Calhoun served two terms as Vice President: in
1825 with John Quincy and in 1829 with Andrew Jackson. In 1832 he quit his Vice President

ended with no majority for any of the candidates. Clay supported John Adams instead of Andrew
Jackson, which violated the instructions of the Kentucky legislature. Due to the informal
precedent that the Secretary of State would eventually assume the presidency, Jackson
supporters pictured Clay s position as Secretary of State as a corrupt bargain. Nevertheless, Clay

Young Adolescent Attitude Towards Military And Self Efficacy
A steady decline in enlistment of youth in defence services poses a major problem leading to acute
shortages of human resource requirements in the defence sector. Identifying the major predictors of
a youth s intention to join the defence forces will facilitate screening the right type of youth who
possess the required life skills, attitudes and beliefs, potentials, temperament, and other personality
characteristics relevant for discharging the duties and responsibilities of defence services. It was
hypothesized that career intention would be predicted by their social, psychological characteristics
such as Attitude towards Military and Self Efficacy. Data was collected on Attitudes towards
Military, Self Efficacy, Subjective norms and Enlistment Intentions from one hundred and nineteen
Higher Secondary School students in Coimbatore district, TamilNadu. Factor analysis was carried
to find out the core dimensions of attitudes towards Military. Regression analysis revealed that the
young adolescent attitude towards military and self efficacy significantly predicted their strong
intention to enlist in the defence services. The results showed that the following four core attitude
dimensions such as Self and Physical Development , Evaluation of Working Condition and benefits

Black Masculinity And The Hip Hop Culture
In the predominantly patriarchal history of the world masculinity and what it means to be a
man have differed from culture to culture. When it comes to African American history and
culture, particularly what it has meant to be a man has no clear set of universal rules or
guidelines. There are a few different sources such as hip hop and television many young black
men across America draw their sense of masculinity from. On the other hand, there are role
models in black communities that many young black men also draw their sense of masculinity
from. With so many different sources to draw a sense of what it means to be a black man in
today s society from what is the true definition of black masculinity. In black media today the hip
hop culture is often referred to when defining what it means to be a black person in society. In
particular the hip hop culture is where many young black men pull both positive and negative
aspects of black masculinity. Many mainstream hip hop songs often create a common misogyny
by objectifying and stereotyping women. An example of this can be heard in the song Nasty Girl
by The Notorious B.I.G. where he states: Conversate. Sex on the first date. I state, You know what
you do to me? She starts off, Well I don t usually. Then I, whip it out, rubber no doubt. Step out,

Essay about Defining Power and Politics
Defining Power and Politics
Since man began to talk politics was born, politics is the social study and interaction with another
being.
Politics is the process and method of gaining or maintaining support for public or common action.
Although it is generally applied to governments, politics is also observed in all human group
interactions including corporate, academic, and religious. It is also social relations involving
authority and power, the study of government and other political units,
It is also the study of conflict resolution, in the modern world, people argue over many beliefs,
interests and values, the aim of politics is to remove this conflict to produce a general agreement ...

Unlike the children, the two nations are conflicting over the borders of their countries, if one way
to resolve this conflict was to rewrite the map so their borders don t conflict, that would solve the
problem, but what about the gap that is now left, this involves moral values, because what happens
if people lived there, they now aren t under the guidance of the state, they become refugees, this
conflicts with the two nations values, and moral beliefs, who should now take in the refugees?
Should they be split?.
Political activity can spring from a set of values, and beliefs as well as self interest, so in other
words the conflict might be better unsolved than solved because if solved, it would go against
peoples values and beliefs ,which is worse than conflicting interest.
But politics is the art of the possible, one of those nations if it wanted to resolve that conflict it
could have used a less diplomatic way, it could have used coercion, force in similar terms, but to be
able to use force, you need power, but what is it and why is it so difficult to define?
If people have power they have the ability to influence another persons behaviour even if that
person doesn t want to do it, though a threat or sanctions or manipulation, in political situations
people with power have the ability to reward those who

Hesitanity In Hamlet
In Shakespeare s Hamlet, Hamlet does not succeed to the throne after his father s death, but if he
had would he have been a good king? Due to the fact that he was highly educated and clearly
controls the people s perception of him very well he would have made a very competent king of
Denmark. The one factor holding him back from being the perfect king are his wild emotions about
his father s death and mother s quick mariage. Hamlethas been well educated and Shakespeare
makes it a point that we know that, mentioning the university of Wittenberg at which Hamlet
studied multiple times in act 1 scene 2. There is no doubt that Wittenberg was a respected school in
northern Europe. Wittenberg is also significant as it is the university in which Martin Luther taught.
By picking this university for Hamlet to attend, Shakespeare could have been alluding to how
Hamlet was taught to think critically, challenge the establishment and act definitively, the last of

The Theme Of Themes In William Shakespeare s Macbeth
The play Macbeth is brilliantly written by William Shakespeare. There are a lot of themes in the
play that goes on and teaches about the ambition, the guilt, the fate versus free will concept and
how things are not what they seem. All of those factor into how Macbeth is a very interesting and
very captivating story.
Shortly after Macbeth hears the prophecies of him becoming the Thane of Cawdor and the King of
Scotland, and after becoming the Thane of Cawdor a few moments later, he writes a letter to Lady
Macbeth about what he is thinking, which at the time is how he wants to do away with King

When Macbeth meets with the three witches to hear prophecies about his future there is one
prophecy that isn t what it seems. The third apparition that speaks to Macbeth says; Macbeth
shall never be vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against
him (IV. i. 92 94). Macbeth immediately thinks of it literally. Believes that he will only be
defeated if the actual woods come up against him. Which we know by the end that people use the
sticks and twigs to disguise themselves against Macbeth to make it seem that the woods are
moving. When Banquo and Macbeth first leave the battle, they met the three witches. There
Banquo says; You should be women, and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so (I.
iii. 45 47). Banquo doesn t quite know what the witches are and eventually finds out that they re
witches.
When Macbeth becomes the Thane of Cawdor and turns out that one prophecy is true he starts
to question whether or not if he has to do something to become King, or if fate will grant him
King. If fate wants me to be king, perhaps fate will just make it happen and I won t have to do
anything (I. iii. 146 148). He starts to think that maybe he will become king out of circumstance,
but as we know he kills Duncan to become king. Then later when Macbeth is talking to the
murders about killing Banquo he says; To leave no rubs or botches in the work Fleance, his son,
that keeps him

The Future Of DNA Forensics
Forensics science has had a huge impact on today s legal system making it much easier to
identify and put away criminals. Before being able to identify people by their DNA the court
heavily relied on eyewitness accounts. This was not always the best option seeing that these
accounts were not always accurate. Now however forensics are able to find out someone s
identity through something as simple as a hair follicle. With this new technology not only is it
easier prove someone s guilt, it is also easier to prove one s innocence. For example, Kirk
Bloodsworth was sentenced two life sentences in prison for murder and sexual assault, and after
spending 9 years in prison was exonerated by DNAfound at the crimescene proving his innocence.

Thanks to the database it is now simple to identify someone by what they left behind at the

task for law enforcement. Though today there is the drawback of someone committing a crime
and not being in the DNA database this could possibly be fixed in the future. What if through
DNA found at the crime scene we were able to discover physical characteristic of the culprit
through DNA. If this were possible the police would be able to have a physical description of the

A Yellow Raft in Blue Water by Michael Dorris
While growing up Michael Dorris never encountered a Native American literary character that
he could relate too, and being of Modoc Tribe of California descent, this was something that was
very important to him. After graduating from Georgetown University, and earning a Master s
Degree at Yale, Dorris began to create these characters and ideas that he had longed for himself
during childhood. He married his literary partner, Louise Erdrich, who was also of Native
American descent. They had three children together, plus the three that Dorris had adopted, all of
which were born on Native American reservations. All three of his adopted children suffered from
fetal alcohol syndrome. During a twenty year period before Dorris death, he published fourteen
books and over one hundred articles. In 1987 he published his first novelA Yellow Raft in Blue
Water. A Yellow Raft in Blue Water is divided into three sections narrated by three different
Native American women: Rayona, Christine and Ida. All three of these women are all related.
Rayona is the daughter of Christine, and Christine believes she is the daughter of Ida, but Ida is
actually her half sister and cousin. All three sections were a part of a larger story; they all helped
support or complete each other. The structure of this novel forces us as readers to be more active.
It causes us to look more closely, and fit together the stories of the three women. When the ladies

General Motors Manufacturing Case Summary
Executive summary
In spring 2010, New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., a successful joint venture between Toyota
Motor Co. and General Motors Co, shut down its plant in Fremont, California. Over two decades
NUMMI was a model manufacturing plant with high quality and productivity, exceptional worker s
satisfaction and attendance. What did NUMMI do to change the former GM s dysfunctional
disaster into best plant?
This report is going to examine a dramatic change conducted by NUMMI s leadership. It will
address three main reasons which made this change possible: Creating a new production system

NUMMI was created as a team based organization with sense of interdependence and unity. There
were just three level management levels; in contrast, old GM s plant had a six levels hierarchy. A
team leader, who was responsible not only for coordinating teamwork and trainings of team
members, but also was able to replace a team member on line if needed, represented the first level
of management. The second level management in addition was responsible for budgeting and
planning. Moreover, these managers were expected to resolve the problems at the lowest possible
level.
In order to foster fair and efficient environment NUMMI designed a new job structure;
specifically, job classifications were reduced from 81 to 3 with the same wage rate. Developed
reward system also tended to equalize rewards among employees. For instance, a team leader
received only a 50 cent hourly premium and each team was awarded with a small social budget.
Continual training system and information sharing among all team members let the company to
support its goals. Implementing the stop the line system allowed management to empower its
employees by pushing down responsibility for the production and quality at the lowest possible
level, to a worker. Meanwhile, the policy of mutual trust or no layoff policy established a real trust
between the company and employees by ensuring its workers to

Evaluate The Effectiveness Of Allied Leadership In Ww1
The purpose of this essay is to asses allied leadership effective in WW1 and how effective it was.
The topics to be discussed are, the brilliant tactics the allied leaders used, the great leadership
outside of the war also leading to major technological advancements and meticulous planning
lead to many victories. Although the casualties during WW1 were catastrophic the brilliant
ideas of men like general Arthur Currie led to many soldiers keeping their lives. One such idea
was when allied solders were ordered to tie urine covered rags over their faces, although odd, this
was how soldiers would protect themselves from deadly chlorine gas early in the war. One idea
was intelligence which allowed allies to spot and take out german artillery. was training soldiers
instead of sending in soldiers without any knowledge of the plan, every one of them had maps

form of deadly chemicals such as chlorine, Phosgene and Benzyl bromide as well as the

Cosimo De Medici In The Renaissance Essay
Florence, located on the Arno River, north of the center of Italy has often been called the Cradle of
the Renaissance and was the home to some of the greatest artists and thinkers of the Renaissance.
During this time, Florence was the banking center of Europe. The wealth helped Florence become a
cultural leader during the Renaissance. One more reason for the success of Florenceduring the
Renaissance was the contribution of the Medicis. The Medicis dominated Florence for about 300
years and acquired their wealth mainly through Florence s major industry banking. They used this
wealth to patronize artists, scientists and philosophers. One of the rulers who contributed a lot to
the Renaissance was Cosimo de Medici. Cosimo de Medici was the son of Giovanni de Medici
and it was he who established the Medici empire in Florence. Even though Cosimo de Medici was
tyrannical, corrupt, and power thirsty, his contribution to the Renaissance as a patron of art,
libraries and philosophy greatly outweighed his negative political actions.
Cosimo de Medici was corrupted and would do anything to get in power. One such example can be
seen by the relationship between the Medici and the Roman Catholic Church. The Pope (Official
leader of the Roman Catholic Church) himself opened a huge credit line, giving the Medici the

The Centrality Of Play For A Child s Social Development
The centrality of Play for a child s social development Play is so important in a child s
development that the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights has recognized it as
a right of every child (Parents Magazine, 2015). Play is also important in social development as
highlighted in my poster for parents, this rationale of my poster will discuss the key theories,
processes and messages that are presented when looking at how play affects social development.
Many theorists including Vygotsky, Piaget and Bandura have conducted studies on play and the
social development of a child. As Piaget stated play performs a major role in children s
expanding mental abilities (Piaget, 1962) this was supported in studies conducted by both
Bandura and Vygotsky. Vygotsky s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is a supported theory
on the difference on what children can achieve independently and what they can achieve or
understand with help from a More Knowledgeable Other (MKO), which is someone with better
understanding or a higher ability than the learner. This can be a teacher or another student in a
school setting. Vygotsky developed his theory on social development where his main focus was on
a child s ZPD, he defines the ZPD as the distance between the actual developmental level as
determined by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determined
through problem solving under adult guidance, or in collaboration with more capable peers

The Pros And Cons Of Agent Orange
Agent Orange: An Herbicide with Agency The war in Vietnam was, and continues to be, one of
the most controversial hot button topics in American history. The military s use of dangerous
pesticides, like Agent Orange, is a major part of this controversy. Agent Orange is a defoliant that
was widely used to deforest dense jungle areas to reduce both hiding places and food sources for
the Vietnamese. During the war, American B 52 bombers released over nineteen million gallons of
Agent Orange over the Vietnamese countryside. After ten years of continuous dumping, 1971
finally marked the end of America s use of Agent Orange and other herbicides. In 1974, the United
Statesgovernment, headed by Richard Nixon, swore the country would never again use chemical
weapons in a first strike. (Levy and Scott Clark)
That announcement came too late for many Vietnam War veterans and survivors. In addition to the
ethical implications of intentionally eliminating the jungle as a resource, the use of Agent Orange
created other side effects for both civilians and American military members. Exposure to Agent
Orange has been linked to over fourteen serious health issues, including diabetes and many types
of cancer, as well as thousands of birth defects. (Ha) Over the next five years, U.S. veterans began
experiencing symptoms, such as asthma, chronic rashes, and various cancers, as well as an
increase in the number of children born with Down syndrome or spina bifida due to Agent Orange
exposure.

Winston Churchill s Role In WWII
Never was so much owed by so many, to so few. said Sir Winston S. Churchill, August 20th,
1940, in one of his most famous speeches. Although the English Royal Air Force is no longer
fighting Nazi Germany in WWII, these words still relate to Winston Churchill today. How can a
single person inspire so many? Over his 91 years of life Winston has shown great heroism.
Churchill proves his courage during WWI and WWII. He has been incredibly determined when he
reached 19 different political positions, including prime minister (highest government position)
twice. He had also been known for many famous paintings and winning a Nobel Prize in literature,
demonstrating his wisdom.
Winston Churchill had lead Great Britain to victory in both WWI and WWII. He also had many
other military victories, albeit much smaller. In 1875 Churchill joined the British Army at the age
of 21. He was assigned to the Cavalry and fought in the Mahdist, 2nd Boer, Sudan, and Indian
wars. Winston left the army in 1899 to become a writer and politician. On a ... Show more content

Personal Strengths And Weaknesses
My second strength is to seek first to understand, then be understood. There was a time in my
life that this section would have been a low scoring section for me. I was once a person that
would never put myself into the position of another to fully establish a connection of
understanding from the other persons point of view, I was too busy. Now I have individualized
consideration and I think age and career choices are the reasons why. In an article by B. Wilson,
(2003 2005), he writes that Stephen Covey, as others, believes that the only way to establish
communication in some professional and personal situations is by becoming, in small part, the
person you are listening to . I make every attempt to do that exact procedure when employees
come to me with problems or concerns. I m no longer impatiently waiting on them to finish their
story but now I put myself in their shoes. It s important for the staff to feel as though they can
come to me with issues and this is where the idealized influence and individual consideration come
into play. Listening to the staff and genuinely caring about them makes for a more pleasant work
environment, happier employees, and appreciative people. My third strength is Synergy. This
actually caught me by surprise, a little. Synergy is achieved my maximizing the driving forces,
minimizing the restraining forces, and combining strengths of people through positive teamwork,

(2) Competition With Managers from C3 Presents at the helm of BDO the event can now excel
in getting big name headliners at better prices and also reduce the risks of being out bid by other
festivals such as Soundwave and Future Music. This is because of C3 s buying power and

festival to also tour as part of BDO. Almost every main headliner that has played BDO in the past

Community Service By Robert Coles
Politically, socially, environmentally or one person at a time, how will you give back to society?
Day in and day out many citizens change the world, or they do just the opposite and make the
world a worse place than when they woke up. The article I chose to review is, Community Service
written by Robert Coles. The article tells a story of college students who make a difference in the
worldthrough peer tutoring, an act of community service, and have such an impact that they act
as role models for Coles and he begins to do the same. Briefly in the beginning of the article,
Coles states that, students are likely to express their lofty political and social impulses and
practical desires to change the world through community service, even if in limited or modest
ways. (Robert Coles, pg.93) We must make an ultimate decision about the world we live in, will
we choose to make a difference in the lives of fellow citizens or discriminate and punish not only
them but ourselves by not sharing the knowledge we have been taught. Within the article, Robert
Coles shares experiences and quotes from a college junior who once told him, I want to help kids
I know. (Robert Coles, pg.94) Cole believed he seemed both voluble and impassioned. As the
college junior tutors in the ghetto, he teaches the children that there is a better life outside of the
world they are currently living in, provided they study hard and receive a good education. The
junior has a remarkable sense on what

Agents Of Socialisation Australia
The representatives of socialisation are emotions, self concept, attitudes and behaviour they are
likely to change in a person s life due to influences around them. The two major influential agents to
children s growth in the Australian society are family and school. This tasker will justify the
vocabulary of Socialisation and discover the two principals Agents of Socialisation in Australian
society and culture. The term Socialisation indicates the action such as skills, knowledge,
behaviours/attitudes, values, and motivations particular individual encounters or is taught through
a period of time particularly from childhood to be able to gather in the groups or culture they are

understandings which are required for socialising within the culture or groups with others to be

Family is a primary agent because parents are the only adults the children are in contact with the
most throughout most of their lives. Also in some cases, the family s wealth determines the child s

The school is the secondary agent of socialisation that children introduced to throughout growing

(The School) learn to become a productive member of the society, formal set of skills and

The Slave By Frederick Douglass
Concepts, techniques, and ways of thinking can last much longer than their creators. The
philosophy of Plato is an example of that. Its ideas can be found in a speech written thousands of
years later. In What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? Frederick Douglass, a former slave,
addresses an audience of white abolitionists on July 5th of 1852. He focuses on the disparity
between the American values celebrated on the Independence Day and the issue of slavery. To do
so, Douglass raises the question of to whom those values apply and explains why and how it should
be different. Analyzing Douglass effort, we see that he is using arguments that trace back to the
ancient Platonic ideas to support his stance on the equally ancient question of citizenship.
From the beginning of his speech, Frederick Douglass uses specific language to create a distance
between him and his audience. Although he calls his listeners fellow citizens, Douglass refers to
the United States and its independence as your nation and your freedom. This explains Douglass
view of his position in the country: he was a citizen, although not officially recognized as one, but
this land was not his. The question of citizenship raised in the U.S. at Douglass time resembles the
situation in Athens at Plato s time. There, only 15% of the population were citizens with full rights
of participation in the Athenian democracy. While Plato does not address this issue in the Gorgias
or the in the Phaedrus, Douglass

Comparing Summerland And Once More To The Lake
The two essays I have chosen to compare are Peter Jon Lindberg s Summerland , and E.B. White s
Once More to the Lake. In these two essays both authors talk about their experiences that started
when both men were young (child and teenager) and evolved into a vacation spot that would
become home for many summers. Each essaydescribes both the similarities of their summer trips
from past to present and the differences of their trips as well.
In White s essay in the first paragraph he talks about the good ole days when he was just a kid

Cannibalism Research Paper
Cannibalism is an act that is thought to be terrible and inconceivable in the minds of people. But,
contrary to what many people think, cannibalism is very much alive and still being practiced within
many countries including The United States of America; it s just that the government hasn t found

cannibalism, and its different cases. Cannibalism is one of the strangest and most horrific American

defined as the eating of one s own species; cannibals are people eating people. Cannibals have a

The Supremes Role In Popular Music During The 1960 s
Ever since 2011, The Supremes has been the vocal group that most interests me. Originally
called the Primettes , this female singing group was founded in 1959 and has since been one the
most successful groups to date, in America. (Bronson, 265) The singing group had four original
members, yet only three of the four made it to the peak of the group s career; those women being

Explain The Growth Of Suburbs In The 50 s
The growth of suburbs in the 50 s
The early Suburbs of London, and in addition a few in the United States, were constructed around
the partition of diverse monetary classes. Amid the eighteenth century, rich entrepreneurs in
London started to utilize landholdings around Westminster as an approach to evade the lower
classes inside urban zones. After a century, the same happened in the United Statesaround the
urban areas of New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. Rural areas, for example, these, in view of

And they want to get a house and have a job. In this book George acts like he does not like the
way Lennie acts but he does still care about Lennie because in the book Lennie had a dead

it away because George knew that if he had a dead mouse it will be bad because it might had a
disease. For example this is when George addresses no matter what situation that they are in they
will always have each other backs and talks about it in this quote. But not us! An why?
Because... because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that s why.

since Lennie forgets everything but unlike people forgetting about their friends George takes care

Uncertainty Reduction Theory Report
Getting to know people can be a long and challenging process. Most of the time, we choose not to
put in the effort to get to know someone unless we need something from him or her or we put in the
minimal effort necessary to keep the conversation from getting to awkward. The book calls this the
uncertainty reduction theory. The uncertainty reduction phase has three steps to it. The entry phase,
which is the time when a relationship is just beginning. The subjects are strangers and have never
met before. The next phase is the personal phase. In this phase, the subjects of the relationship
begin to communicate in more of a personal level. They begin to open up about themselves and
share more personal details with each other. Lastly, the exit... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

We first met in 2007, while attending the same junior high. When we first met, she was in 8th
grade and I was in 7th. We started out in the entry phase just with the small talk and chitchat
throughout the day. The relationship developed and moved into the personal stages. We began to
learn new details about each other and communicate more frequently during and outside of
school. I asked her to be my girlfriend in 2008, when I was in 8th grade and she had moved into
high school. I think we were still in the personal stage for a while, because who knew if the
relationship would last. Eventually, about a year later, I feel we moved into the exit phase. We both
decided that we wanted to continue with the relationship and see where it went. I do no think that
either of us would have though we would still be in the same relationship over seven years later.
Another example of the uncertainty reduction theory is when I moved into the suites on campus
my freshman year. I had no idea who I was moving in with. I did not even have the opportunity to
speak to them via Facebook or email, because my room was finalized so late. The entry phase was
very awkward. I had nothing in common with two of my roommates and the other was just a little
quite. I did not know where the relationship was going to

The Use of Hedonistic, Playful Youth Based Photography in...
A single word can group together all (or at least a large majority) of today s youth, that word is
Hedonist.
Hedonist (noun): a person whose life is devoted to the pursuit of pleasure and self gratification.
In a world where young people are only living for themselves, the corporations and brands are
booming. Having expensive clothes, the newest phone and an overpriced cocktail in your hand on a
weeknight has never been so important. This is the essence of youth, going to parties to show off
your brand new purchases, buying a whole new wardrobe for your one week holiday to Ibiza.
Major fashion brands have caught on to this and youth culture has began to feature heavily in
campaigns.

If you buy these things, you could live like these people; they re selling an idea just as much as
they are trying to sell the garments in said campaigns.
Another photographer who s work particularly focuses on youth culture is Danielle Levitt, a New
York based photographer who s work reflects American youth culture. She has shot for brand s like
Penguin and Diesel as well as having a very full portfolio of youth culture based photography that
has been featured in magazines like Hero and Rollacoaster. Her work for Penguin is quite similar
to Elaine Constantine except maybe more commercial. All the shots are posed unlike Elaine
Constantine s who s tend to look more natural but the notion is the same, lots of very attractive
people spending time together in bars or by the docks which is where this campaign is based; but
her work for Diesel Reboot is worlds apart. Images of different types of subcultures in their
bedrooms were something very fresh and interesting in the way of youth culture; it showed a
completely genuine account of how young adults/teenagers live their lives and it s a huge contrast
to other brand s campaigns trying to appeal to youth audiences.
Taking both of these photographers work into account and looking

At first Forbidden seem to be another typical young adult paranormal romance, with the
mysterious guy and the new girl setting that may seem a little familiar. However in the end I feel
it did a rather good job on balancing the romance and the supernatural world building. I thought
the writing was colorful, and the story was very engaging. Not to say it didn t have it s moment,
but overall I really enjoyed reading this book.

Childhood Obesity Is A Common Problem
Childhood obesity is a medical condition of being overweight or obese. This condition has
continued to grow and increase over the past five decades. In the US alone there are more than
three million cases per year. For one to be obese it means that the individual is significantly
overweight for their age and height. The way to tell if someone is obese or overweight is by a
BMI, which stands for body mass index. Being overweight is defined as having a BMI that is at
or above the 85th percentile to the 95th percentile for children and teens. Childhood obesity is a
common problem in America today and changes need to be done to save the future youth from
having these health problems. Childhood obesity has been around for a long time. It has... Show

Another reason being lifestyle that is taught to children by their parents. Some blame can be put
onto parents if they do not lead their children into an active healthy lifestyle. Many children tend
to either live a vigorously active lifestyle or sedentary lifestyle, which is greatly influenced by
their parents. A bad habit in diet can also induce the chances of childhood obesity. For example,
Beverages such as sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) and whole fat milks are leading sources of
added sugars and solid fats, respectively, in the diets of US children and contribute nearly one
fifth of total caloric intake. (Ford and Popkin, 47 53) This explains how many sugary drinks are
incorporated into young children s diets and can be very unhealthy for them. Most children love
sugary drinks, but these drinks can have a negative impact on their diet causing them to gain
unwanted excess weight. One way to help this is by monitoring the amount of sugar a day they
consume. For example, One of the best strategies to reduce childhood obesity is to improve the
eating and exercise habits of your entire family. (Sandhya) This shows how small changes in
children s diets and lifestyle could result in many beneficial outcomes for children who suffer from
this. Childhood obesity has received many efforts of improvement, but hasn t had enough results.

The Destruction Of The Second Temple
Essay question: Which is the most significant event for the transformation of Judaism: (a) the
Babylonian Exile; or (b) the destruction of the second temple in 70CE?
Introduction
Judaism as one of the oldest religions in the world has been through various historical changes.
Started with the practice and belief of ancient Israeli people, through the conquering and changing
of different kingdoms and empires, Judaism and Jewish people changed and adapted to maintain
their identity, belief and existence. Judaism that we know nowadays is a result of its historical
changes, primarily from the Babylonian Exile and the second temple periods.
What is Judaism?
Judaism began around the year 1800 B.C.E in the Middle East and was established with the ... Show

Jewish sacrificial practice was originally offered in the Jerusalem Temple (Sanders 2016). They
sacrificed animals to gain peace and forgiveness, and the animals were distributed among the
priest, the altar and the worshipper after the ritual slaughter (Sanders 2016). The exile disrupted
the religious identity of Jewish people that was closely tied to their native land, the place that was
seen as YHWH s house. The captivity resulted in the abolition of their temple, which led to the
changes in their religious practices as Jewish people could no longer perform their rituals at their
sacred homeland.
The focus of Jewish religion was then shifted to studies and prayers. Instead of sacrificing animals,
they promoted the worshipping and the study of the Torah. This was the foundation of the
development of the synagogue. Synagogue was the house of assembly where the Jews could gather,
study and pray. The growth of the synagogues helps to maintain Jewish tradition and religious
culture while they were in the host country (Hammer 2010). Therefore, the synagogue was the
central institution of Judaism after the exile.
In the beginning, Israel was a tribal society that was organised according to the acknowledgement
of the twelve sons of patriarch Jacob (Zvi 2012, p.25). After the exile, tribal groups were replaced
by clans. The tribal society was only credible before the Jews left their motherland. Within the tribal
society, the rights of citizenship were given at birth, which

Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency ( Access Copyright )...
In the case of The Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency (Access Copyright) vs. York University, I
believe that the plaintiff, Access Copyright, will not be successful in their lawsuit against the
defendant, York University.
Access Copyright is a non profit agency that represents writers and publishers by collecting and
distributing royalty fees on their behalf. Although this is a non profit organization, Access Copyright
does still charge administration fees for their services and enforces a business model that has
worked its way into attempting to monopolize their copyright services by making their presence
mandatory through seeking to implement a permanent tariff for industries to pay if they are not
licensing the rights to copyrighted material through their agency. York University, the defendant, is
one of several Canadian Universities that has been operating outside of the Access Copyright s
temporary tariff since 2011. The wise decision to operate outside of Access Copyright is supported
by the University s proven commitment to ensuring that all access to copyrighted materials for
studying, teaching, and research purposes are being properly used with the appropriate payment to
authors and publishers independently. By ensuring that both the authors and publishers copyrighted
materials are compensated and all royalties are paid directly towards them this cuts out the need for
a middleman, which in this case is Access Copyright.

Settling In The West Essay
Settling in the west After the Civil War, a dynamic period in American history opened the
settlement of the West. The lives of Western miners, farmers, and ranchers were often filled with
great hardships, but the wave of American settlers continued. railroads hastened this nation during
this period, many Native Americans lost their homeland and their way of life. Back in the day, the
cowboys were often people who herd and tend to the cattle. Cattle ranching or the practice of
raising livestocksuch as sheep or cattle for meator wool, was driven by the population in the west
and their desire to eat meat. When Cortez defeated the empire of the Aztec and Mayan they were
rich beyond their mind, but they lacked cattle so they imported cattle to Tampico, Mexico where
there was lots of open range for cattle. Hence they created cattle ranching for meat. The cattle
ranches not only provided meat, but also leather and candles. Small cattle and small farms of the
Anglo colonies could be controlled by foot but the bigger cattle s required different technology.

Historians believe that one of the reasons that helped cause pioneers to settle west were because
they wanted to find better jobs to support their families and they were told they would have a
better life in the west. With many people moving west sometimes it caused a problem of
crowding, but people still wanted to move west. The biggest factor that contributed to brining
pioneers west was an opportunity to buy land. Land in the West was cheaper than land in the
East. People moved West in many ways, such as the railroad or by foot. When people moved into
Iowa they began to build and establish farms. People who settled in the frontier faced many
problems. Women in the frontier sometimes had to work side by side next to the men in farms or
they made clothes and sewed

  • 2. Isthmus Of Panama The formation of the Isthmus of Panama is seen today as one of the most transformative and remarkable events of the Cenozoic. The formation of the land bridge that connects North and South America and divides the Pacific and Atlantic oceans had profound affects on the climate, atmosphere and the biodiversity of both marine and terrestrial organisms of the area encompassing the Isthmus of Panama. It led to the Great American Biotic Interchange, which allowed for the invasion of inhabitants from each side of the Americas. The dispersal of terrestrial organisms and the vicariant separation of marine organisms produced dramatic transformations in the land ecosystems of South America and Central America, which largely influenced the distribution... The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), which is a measure of the efficacy and accuracy of statistical models for a given data set, was applied to the two most commonly debated migration models for Isthmus formation. One migration model consisted of a single rate shift at around 3.5 Ma, the once widely accepted timing for the formation of Isthmus. The other migration model consists of two rate shifts at 25 Ma and 10 M, consistent with the initial collision of South America and the Panama Block and the closure of the CAS, respectively. Results from this test revealed that the migration model consisting of two rate shifts was a more accurate model for the formation of the Isthmus of Panama. As seen in figures 1A D, migrations between North and South America occurred in gradual pulses over millions of years rather than just a sudden burst of migration events occurring after closure of the Isthmus around 3.5 Ma, as indicated by the dashed ... • 3. Touch Of Zen Discuss how the fight scene achieves its effect: The bamboo forest fight scene in the movie Touch of Zen, achieves its effects by illustration of Yang as a powerful fighter through her movements and fight tactics. The fight scene also paints Shi as a careful character wise enough to know when he can win and how to do so. He clichГ© as noted by Shi that though good is strong, evil is stronger is well illustrated in the scene (Teo, 2006). The successful dispatch of the enemy by Shi and Yang after a rigorous battle reflects the journey good has to take to overcome evil in the movie. How does the camera frame the scene, and how do the actors move within the frame? (mise en scГЁne) The forest scene is framed using the 2.35.1 aspect ratio. This ratio ... Jean Valjean has changed when he interacted with the Bishop of Digne. A little background on these two characters is that the Bishop of Digne is the man who saves Jean Valjean with his compassion. Jean Valjean is the hero and the main character in the movie. What was happening during this scene is that Jean Valjeanjust got out of prison and he was looking for work and nobody really accepted him because he just got out of prison and the Bishop let Jean Valjean in his home. In this sense the Bishop of Digne just let Jean Valjean into his home and gave him food, then while everyone was sleeping Jean Valjean stole silver that the Bishop of Digne owned, Jean Valjean took the silver ... Seatbelts should be on every vehicle to provide protections to its drivers and its passengers. Car manufacturers should enforce the use of a seatbelt. How does a seatbelt provide protection? A seatbelt can be specifically helpful on a high speed crash. Seatbelts should be worn at all times. A manufacturer should enforce it to start a car engine. All drivers would be required to wear a seatbelt and if they do not then the car will not be able to start. It would require a really good system so people cannot easily hack it or remove it. There would also no longer be a fine for not wearing a seatbelt and people would like that. Seatbelts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Crime In Boston Essay The crime rates in Boston are currently rated at 364.4 compared to a national average of 301.1(The higher the number, the more crime). Boston has always been higher than the national average, which is not unusual due to the size and popularity of the city. However, in recent years the city of Boston has cut down on crimesignificantly and closed the gap between themselves and the national average. In 2001 Boston s rating was a 602, so it is clear to see that they have been making great strides towards beefing up their local security efforts. On top of these international sporting events, the city of Boston has also been host to the Democratic National Convention. Both the Democratic National Convention and the Olympic games are considered to be National Special Security Events (NSSE). This means that the United States Secret Service Agency would act as the head of safety and security operations. Since the city of Boston has prior experience dealing with the U.S. Secret Service, this will ensure a smooth implementation of security measurements by the federal, state, and local agencies. In its prior experience with the Democratic National Convention and the Secret service, the Commonwealth of Boston enabled itself to support the security efforts necessary for a large scale event such as the Olympics. Many of the population don t even know that it exists, youth, and old adults are more likely to discuss the religion Catholicism. Directly following the social protocol, many think that orthodox is a religion that died out long time ago and few never learns the history behind of its being in this world. After his term as Secretary of State, Henry returned to the U.S Senate from 1831 to 1852. Clay s recognition as a compromiser originated from his involvement in the Missouri Compromise. Clay supported John Adams instead of Andrew Jackson, which violated the instructions of the Kentucky legislature. Due to the informal precedent that the Secretary of State would eventually assume the presidency, Jackson supporters pictured Clay s position as Secretary of State as a corrupt bargain. Nevertheless, Clay had experience as a diplomat and a goal to pursue as Secretary of State. When it comes to African American history and culture, particularly what it has meant to be a man has no clear set of universal rules or guidelines. There are a few different sources such as hip hop and television many young black men across America draw their sense of masculinity from. On the other hand, there are role models in black communities that many young black men also draw their sense of masculinity from. In black media today the hip hop culture is often referred to when defining what it means to be a black person in society. In particular the hip hop culture is where many young black men pull both positive and negative aspects of black masculinity. • 16. Hesitanity In Hamlet In Shakespeare s Hamlet, Hamlet does not succeed to the throne after his father s death, but if he had would he have been a good king? Due to the fact that he was highly educated and clearly controls the people s perception of him very well he would have made a very competent king of Denmark. The one factor holding him back from being the perfect king are his wild emotions about his father s death and mother s quick mariage. Hamlethas been well educated and Shakespeare makes it a point that we know that, mentioning the university of Wittenberg at which Hamlet studied multiple times in act 1 scene 2. There is no doubt that Wittenberg was a respected school in northern Europe. Wittenberg is also significant as it is the university in which Martin Luther taught. The third apparition that speaks to Macbeth says; Macbeth shall never be vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him (IV. i. 92 94). Macbeth immediately thinks of it literally. Believes that he will only be defeated if the actual woods come up against him. Cosimo De Medici In The Renaissance Essay Florence, located on the Arno River, north of the center of Italy has often been called the Cradle of the Renaissance and was the home to some of the greatest artists and thinkers of the Renaissance. During this time, Florence was the banking center of Europe. The wealth helped Florence become a cultural leader during the Renaissance. One more reason for the success of Florenceduring the Renaissance was the contribution of the Medicis. The Medicis dominated Florence for about 300 years and acquired their wealth mainly through Florence s major industry banking. They used this wealth to patronize artists, scientists and philosophers. One of the rulers who contributed a lot to the Renaissance was Cosimo de Medici. Cosimo de Medici was the son of Giovanni de Medici and it was he who established the Medici empire in Florence. Even though Cosimo de Medici was tyrannical, corrupt, and power thirsty, his contribution to the Renaissance as a patron of art, libraries and philosophy greatly outweighed his negative political actions. Play is also important in social development as highlighted in my poster for parents, this rationale of my poster will discuss the key theories, processes and messages that are presented when looking at how play affects social development. Many theorists including Vygotsky, Piaget and Bandura have conducted studies on play and the social development of a child. As Piaget stated play performs a major role in children s expanding mental abilities (Piaget, 1962) this was supported in studies conducted by both Bandura and Vygotsky. Vygotsky s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is a supported theory on the difference on what children can achieve independently and what they can achieve or understand with help from a More Knowledgeable Other (MKO), which is someone with better understanding or a higher ability than the learner. This can be a teacher or another student in a school setting. Vygotsky developed his theory on social development where his main focus was on a child s ZPD, he defines the ZPD as the distance between the actual developmental level as determined by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance, or in collaboration with more capable peers (Vygotsky, ... During the war, American B 52 bombers released over nineteen million gallons of Agent Orange over the Vietnamese countryside. After ten years of continuous dumping, 1971 finally marked the end of America s use of Agent Orange and other herbicides. • 34. The Slave By Frederick Douglass Concepts, techniques, and ways of thinking can last much longer than their creators. The philosophy of Plato is an example of that. Its ideas can be found in a speech written thousands of years later. In What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? Frederick Douglass, a former slave, addresses an audience of white abolitionists on July 5th of 1852. He focuses on the disparity between the American values celebrated on the Independence Day and the issue of slavery. To do so, Douglass raises the question of to whom those values apply and explains why and how it should be different. Analyzing Douglass effort, we see that he is using arguments that trace back to the ancient Platonic ideas to support his stance on the equally ancient question of citizenship. From the beginning of his speech, Frederick Douglass uses specific language to create a distance between him and his audience. Although he calls his listeners fellow citizens, Douglass refers to the United States and its independence as your nation and your freedom. This explains Douglass view of his position in the country: he was a citizen, although not officially recognized as one, but this land was not his. The question of citizenship raised in the U.S. at Douglass time resembles the situation in Athens at Plato s time. There, only 15% of the population were citizens with full rights of participation in the Athenian democracy. Some of the earliest evidence of cannibalism comes from southern France, where there are Stone Age settlements littered with bones having knife and burn marks indicating that the onetime... While these forms of literature and television are intended for entertainment purposes, the fact remains that they negatively portray cannibalism in a way that differs greatly from reality. By continually connecting cannibalism with murder, the entertainment industries have helped to cause a stereotype for cannibalism that it is only performed by psychotic killers, or uncivilized savages. However, this is not the case, though most movies forget to mention that not all acts of cannibalism have to do with homicide, many in fact are cultural ways to express grief, honor the dead, and show religious faithfulness. Originally called the Primettes , this female singing group was founded in 1959 and has since been one the most successful groups to date, in America. (Bronson, 265) The singing group had four original members, yet only three of the four made it to the peak of the group s career; those women being Diane Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard. Proof to this group s success would be the fact that they rivaled the band The Beatles in worldwide success and fame during their prime in the 60s. Though The Supremes had very original harmonies and melodies, they had no obvious inspirations or influences. The lack of both harmonies and melodies in Roman music and the abundance of them in The Supremes is the starkest contrast in their compositions, despite the similarities in their musical back beats. That being said, it is very likely that they picked up bits and pieces from other legendary R B/soul artists, such as the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder, all of whom the Supremes three members were backup singers for at one time or ... Jewish sacrificial practice was originally offered in the Jerusalem Temple (Sanders 2016). They sacrificed animals to gain peace and forgiveness, and the animals were distributed among the priest, the altar and the worshipper after the ritual slaughter (Sanders 2016). The exile disrupted the religious identity of Jewish people that was closely tied to their native land, the place that was seen as YHWH s house. The captivity resulted in the abolition of their temple, which led to the changes in their religious practices as Jewish people could no longer perform their rituals at their sacred homeland. The focus of Jewish religion was then shifted to studies and prayers. Instead of sacrificing animals, they promoted the worshipping and the study of the Torah. This was the foundation of the development of the synagogue. Synagogue was the house of assembly where the Jews could gather, study and pray. The growth of the synagogues helps to maintain Jewish tradition and religious culture while they were in the host country (Hammer 2010). In the case of The Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency (Access Copyright) vs. York University, I believe that the plaintiff, Access Copyright, will not be successful in their lawsuit against the defendant, York University. Access Copyright is a non profit agency that represents writers and publishers by collecting and distributing royalty fees on their behalf. Although this is a non profit organization, Access Copyright does still charge administration fees for their services and enforces a business model that has worked its way into attempting to monopolize their copyright services by making their presence mandatory through seeking to implement a permanent tariff for industries to pay if they are not licensing the rights to copyrighted material through their agency. York University, the defendant, is one of several Canadian Universities that has been operating outside of the Access Copyright s temporary tariff since 2011. The wise decision to operate outside of Access Copyright is supported by the University s proven commitment to ensuring that all access to copyrighted materials for studying, teaching, and research purposes are being properly used with the appropriate payment to authors and publishers independently. By ensuring that both the authors and publishers copyrighted materials are compensated and all royalties are paid directly towards them this cuts out the need for a middleman, which in this case is Access Copyright.
