1950 s Sociology
The 1950 s saw a boom in the development of suburbs to counter the post World War 2 housing
shortage problem as living in the suburbs offered an alternative to the overcrowded cities. This
phenomenon coincided with the significant growth of the American economy, which granted the
people stronger purchasing power to own a big house in the suburbs and the confidence to improve
their socioeconomic status. Consequently, the suburban lifestyle came to be associated with strong
familial ties and upward social mobility, which can be defined as the American ideals of the 1950 s.
It is important to note that the media had a very significant role in shaping these ideals, mainly
through situational comedies (sitcoms) on television and advertisement, both... Show more content

This was largely due to the lack of representation of other groups of people such as the African
Americans, homosexuals and Americans from a lower socioeconomic status. In the area of race
for example, most sitcoms in the 1950 s such as I Love Lucy (1951) and The Honeymooners
(1956) mainly featured white characters, with little or no mention of other races. Set in a wider
context, these American ideals coincided with the Civil Rights Movement (1954) which sought to
end racial discrimination and segregation, therefore highlighting how these ideals did not
encompass Americans from all walks of life but only the white majority. Hence in leaving out
Americans from other racial and social groups, the media mostly shaped only the American ideals
of the white majority as it failed to encompass America as a diverse

Literary Analysis Of Theodore Dreiser s An American Tragedy
Theodore Dreiser s, An American Tragedy is a prime example of how social tensions between
the rich and the poor and the vicious need to rise to the top can lead to abandonment. The
protagonist, Clyde Griffiths is filled with the willingness to rise far above and looks down upon
his peers. After being represented and invited to see the luxurious ways of the rich Clyde
decides to abandon loose threads that can threaten his rise to the top. Clyde is easily influenced
by others which later on leads to his downfall. Clyde was never born into the luxurious way of
the rich. Infact throughout his life with his parents, Asa and Elvira Griffiths, who are religious
people, have moved from city to city often having difficulty providing food for their children.
Even though the Griffiths have taught their children moral values this has not stopped Clyde
from being tempted to live like his peers. Clyde s first influential encounter with people his age
was when he started working at the Green Davidson as a bellhop where he had become
acquainted to fancy places such as restaurants. At this time he had become vicious in making
himself look good in order to fit in with his peers and became obsessed in dressing well and
following norms that people of his age were doing such as learning how to dance and going to
social events. Clyde now having been introduced to the luxurious ways became even more obsessed
after being introduced to his uncle Samuel Griffiths. Samuel Griffiths owns a Shirt and

Every company has a mission and every team should have a goal to meet that mission. Ideas for
creating a common goal are: create and/or review the team s mission, discuss why they exist in
the first place, allow each team member to express their commitment, create a theme (i.e.,
poster, symbol, motto) that portrays the team as a unit, and use the common purpose to
prioritize the teams actions ( Building a Collaborative Team Environment ). Jane needs to
emphasize the advantages of teamwork in the workplace. Advantages such as increasing the
likelihood of success, each team member brings there strengths to the table, increasing the
success of the project, it will provide motivation and sense of security, as allowing each person a
hand in the cookie jar, avoiding personal responsibility for a mistake. Teams motivate each other
to work together in achieving their common goal, success. Another advantage is it helps divide
the work that needs to be done, not one person can or should do all the work for the project, and
it should be broken down into sub tasks to the most qualified person. Working as a team also
allows each member to learn from one another, we can never learn enough, and networking is the
best way to further your knowledge and experience in any area ( Advantages of Fostering

Plots In The Movie Adaptation Of Ender s Game
Destruction of Planets and Plots in the Movie Adaptation of Ender s Game
Movie adaptations are more frequent than ever before in today s society. Sometimes, they are
held in a higher respect than movies not based on books, especially by those who love books.
When a movie adaptation is watched by someone who read the book, the reader has major and
specific plot points in mind that need focus, and when those points are not hit, there seems to be
an uproar among the community. With Ender s Game, there were mixed reviews. Many disliked
how some of the magic seen in the book was lost in translation. Some didn t seem to like how
characters were presented or how certain things were brought up with no detail, or not brought up
at all. In the movie adaptation of Ender s Game, Orson Scott Card s original idea of Andrew Ender
Wiggin, a child genius, becoming a commander of an army in efforts to save the world remains, but
with Card s intense adventure and genius depth nearly obliterated from the motion picture, the
movie underwhelms with its inabilities to portray the interesting science fiction story in whole.
The movie adaptation of Ender s Game avoids portraying as much child violence as the novel.
Clearly addressed several times in the book, Ender worries about becoming a killer, like his brother
Peter, yet he continues to inflict pain as if he forgot about attempting to avoid the seemingly
inevitable: becoming malleable by surrounding influences. However, the movie plays Ender

Persuasive Speech On Vegetarianism
Why Vegetarianism?
Other than the unfortunate death of animals, producing and consuming meat cannot possibly be
bad? Unless you do not consider a higher health risks, and harming the world bad, you re in the
clear. Backed up through a variety of studies, becoming a vegetarian: not consuming meat, improves
your health and will save the world. Vegetarianismimproves mood and energy; helps fight world
hunger and water scarcity; saves the environment, and helps prevent diseases and promotes a
longer life; Hands down, vegetarianism is the way to life, as without doing so, we are killing
ourselves and our surroundings.
Why vegetarianism? By following the diet of a vegetarian, your vitals will greatly improve.
First of all, your emotions will become sunshines. According to the British Journal of Health
Psychology, scientists have found that eating produce results in more calmness and greater
feelings of happiness. Do you want to have better relationships with family and friends? Now
here s your chance. Clearly, fruits and veggies are the way to do so, as it is proven that they will
make you feel more happy. They will bring the better in you. Also, you will become a supersonic
cheetah. Michael Roizen, physician and the author of The RealAge Diet reveals that a
vegetarian diet will give you more usable energy, as less fat, compared to a non vegetarian diet,
will enter your bloodstream, and your arteries will easily allow oxygen to provide for your
muscles. From climbing the slopes of a math test, to doing any daily physical activity, everyone
can sure use more energy. Adapting a vegetarian diet will give you that energy you always
needed, resulting in you times two. Vegetarianism is not what you always wanted, it is what you
always dreamed of. Making your days ecstatic and soaring past your records is what it will allow
you to do. Why vegetarianism? Because with it, you can give a beacon of hope to those who are
not as fortunate to have access to food and water. Did you know that there are thousands that are
starving due to not having food? Well you can help. According to IOPScience, there are about 925
million that are suffering due to being hungry. Though if the 36% of the calories, which are

Santa Clause Importance
How Santa Claus is Important to American Culture
Santa Claus has developed an American culture that will never change during the holidays. In a
recent poll, it has been recorded that 86 percent of people believed in Santa as a child. Even though
there is a multiethnic status that comes with living in America, over 60 percent of children actually
consider Santa to be an important part of their celebration. It is evident that American culture is
built around this mythical being during the holiday season. His creation has a lot to do with why
Americans act the way they do when Christmas comes around. The creation of Santa Claus is
something that has been engraved into the minds of the majority in American culture. His mythical
presence encourages things like giving, niceness, being family oriented, gifts, shopping, but most of
all putting a smile on your kids face.
If there s one thing that this mythical being is known for, it s the importance he plays in American
culture is the amount of shopping it causes is us to do. Because Santa was someone that was
known for getting multiple kids to whoever was nice, people had no choice to play Santa s role
once they got over the fact that he s actually made up. Santa Claus has caused Americans to play
Santa for their households, ensuring that everyone gets the gifts that they want, and a little
something for themselves. This culture leads to the fact that the average American spends quite a
bit of money during the holidays. In 2015,

Ford Motor Company Vs General Motors
Introduction
For this analysis I chose the Ford Motor Company and General Motors. Both companies have long
been U.S. manufacturing giants in the automotive industry. The analysis spans a five year period
from 2012 to 2016.
Data Collection
All data was collected from 10K filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the
industry standards were produced CSI Market.com.
Summary of Data
The data is broken down into four ratio groups profitability, asset utilization, liquidity and debt
utilization. These groups consist of two ratios with tables presented after each group.
Profitability Ratios
Profit Margin The profit margin is calculated by dividing net income by sales. At first glance, one
can immediately see Ford s strong profits during the five year period with a 2014 being the
exception when profits plummeted 56% from the previous year. This was due to higher costs,
lower costs and several setbacks. General Motors, on the other hand, while not showing the same
glitzy profit margin as Ford, remained extremely steady, although the industry norm for 2014 was
2.85%
Return on Assets These are calculated by dividing net income with total sales. With the exception
of 2014, the return was fairly steady. Both companies dipped at the end of the 2016 fourth quarter
with the industry standard at 3.62% According to industry analysts, the decline was blamed on low
gas prices causing consumers to snub smaller vehicles and embracing SUVs and pick up trucks,

Eyewitness Misidentification In The Criminal Justice System
Introduction
Since the development of DNA evidence, More than 300 people have been exonerated in the United
states alone, since 1989 as a result of eyewitness misidentification (Hsu, cited in Wixted et al, 2015).
Consequently, The Innocence Project was founded in 1992 to assist those individuals who have
been wrongfully convicted. The organization claims that over 70% of overturned cases are the
result of eyewitness misidentification (Innocenceproject.org, n.d.). Whilst this is American data, it
illuminates the tragedy that can emanate from such an unreliable element of the justice system.

For the small police agency with work force constraints, a method called the folder shuffle can be
utilized to effectively blind the administrator. Lineup composition
Fillers (the non suspects included in a lineup) should resemble the eyewitness description of the
perpetrator. Further, the suspect should look similar to the fillers (for example, he should not be the
only member of his race in the lineup, or the only one with facial hair). Eyewitnesses should also
not view more than one identification procedure with the same suspect. Instructions:
The person viewing the lineup should be told that the perpetrator may or may not be in the lineup
and that the investigation will continue regardless of the lineup result. This reduces the pressure on
the witness of feeling like they have to pick a perpetrator. The witness should also be told not to
look to the administrator for guidance. Confidence

Non Verbal Behaviors
Non verbal behaviors are unintentional and can be interpreted by a different personп»ї with a
different meaning. Verbal signals usually accompany by non verbal behaviors. These could be as
easy as a shoulder shrug to head movements to eye contact. These behaviors tend to either
confirm or even emphasize the meaning when speaking, Certain unintentional behaviors can even
contradict what the message was suppose to mean. Quick example if I ask my wife if she can
properly park her vehicle in a parallel parking manner she can say yes and shrug her shoulders

For instance I automatically stand if I am sitting to give a handshake as I find it rude to give one
sitting down. Most people are unaware of that and dont find anything wrong with just sitting and
putting their hand out. Touching in other ways should be completely avoided until you have a
tight grasp on that culture. In mexico people are greeted with a hug and kiss on the cheek.
People in Asia can be offended in this manner due to invasion of personal space. One experience
I will never forget in one of my tours to Iraq i remember that a young woman needed medical
attention but they did not say anything to use until they had a man appeared that they knew and
he came to speak to us to see if we could help. We said no problem but he needed a female medic
to take a look over the young lady. Some cultures it is extremely offensive for men to speak to
women without the head of the house holds permission.
Eye Contact: Eye contact is an extremely sensitive subject. Here in america we use eye contact
for respect or when others speak to you. If our eyes wonder off or look down it gives tales of
either not paying attention or lying. Seeing that people lie with the left side of their brains people
tend to have their eyes move to the left. So myself I have to be looking into peoples eyes. In asian
cultures exposures of long eye contact can be extremely

Dominant groups felt threatened by minorities, and/or superior to them, and/or simply indifferent to

led minorities to distrust the dominant group. In these situations, MCPs were not the original cause

Anabolic Steroid Use And Anabolic Steroids
Why do athletes get so hooked on this so called Steroid ? I m interested in this question, because
that s the question that truly caught my attention the most and, also keeps me wondering. If people
who use it have seen improvement, why do they keep using it. The anabolic steroid also known as
the anabolic androgenic steroid is a drug that athletes use to give more muscle mass to the body and
create more testosteronein the body. If traced back to the 1940 s steroids first appeared in
Germany. Athletes had begun to use this substance as early as 1950 at the olympic games during
the Cold war. Website http://Cesar.com states, From that point until the early 1970 s, steroids
became increasingly popular among not just Olympic athletes, but also professional sports players
and high school athletes (Cesar). Steroids truly have developed into something that everyone wants
to get to achieve the perfect body or create a better physique.
In the article Body Image, Disordered Eating and Anabolic Steroid Use in Female Bodybuilders by
Gary S. Goldfield, he mentions how women and men often suffer from bulimia nervosa because
of their eating habits. Especially bodybuilders, because of competing they have to look and be
lean, so they diet harshly for their body fat levels to be low and more muscle definition to be seen.
Competitive bodybuilding is a sport that requires participants to be exceptionally lean and

Civil War in Syria. On March of 2011, protests appeared in the southern city of Deraa after police
arrested and tortured some teenagers who illegally painted revolutionary slogans on a school
wall. But the peaceful protests rapidly grew into rebel fighting against the government after the
government s violent crackdown. In July, 2011, a group of defected Syrian officers founded the
Free Syrian Army to gather Syrian civilians as opposition. Tension between extremist groups,
and ethnic groups made the domestic conflict even more complicated. The rampage rose up and
descended the country situation into civil war as rebel groups were created to fight against the

The government has set new standards to obtain digital information of citizens introduced in 1986.
The law has not changed, but the technology dramatically. ( US public private partnership for cyber
security , 2010). The government has privilege to get electronic data without needing a warrant.
Some sort of movement launched against it to bring a small variation, but the debate is still going

Cyber intelligence sharing and protection act
This law states how companies exchange information of cyber threats with the higher authorities.
Experts say there is no need to share private information with the government. There is various
privacy concerns associated with it, when companies give personally identifiable data about United

Similarities Between Buck And White Fang
Buck vs White Fang
What might one read about the survival of the fittest, the law of club and fang, and life in
Alaska? The other is Jack London and he is the man who brought both of these books White Fang
and Call of the wild. In the first points on their lives, they were complete opposites. In the middle,
they were in the same place. Both of the dogs were in a dog sled team. The only difference is that
buck was in the back of the sled, and then he had to fight for the leader of the dog sled team. White
Fang was the leader in the first place because everyone knows how strong he was as a leader,
they did not know that about Buck. At the end, White Fang was in the city in California, where
Buck was first, then goes into the wild where White Fang was born and raised.(London, 1979)
The first theme is the law of club and fang. It would come if he fought other dogs that you were
supposed to in the wild. The only way they do not get beat is if one dog gets away really fast and
escapes so it does not get caught. That is exactly what White Fang did. If one of the dogs gets
knocked off its feet in that fight it will be there next meal and this was the law of the fang. The
club was if he or she get caught then you will get beaten. The law club and fang really affected
White Fang. He found out that if your god doesn t give the punishment then the dog can fight back
and if it is your god then he can fight it. So he got real mean at everything. It got even worse when
Beauty took him.

The Segregation Of The United States
In Spite of the devastating history of segregation in the United States. A lot has changed in the
past fifty years since segregation ended. The United States shifted from arresting African
Americans for using white only facilities to integrated schools all over the country. Influential
individuals such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr helped pave the way for African
Americans to live as equals to along with their white counterparts in the United States of America.
What is Segregation In 1896 the United States Supreme Court ruled that it was constitutionally
legal to segregate African Americans with their white counterparts. In the court case of Plessy v.
Ferguson an African American man in Louisiana named Homer Plessy refused to follow the
mandated Jim Crow laws which enforced that African Americans have to sit in a designated area
when riding on a train. Plessy argued that his fourteenth amendment right was violated equal
protection clause, which prohibits the states from denying equal protection of the laws to any
person within their jurisdictions (Duignan, 2016). However, when Plessy s case moved to the
Supreme Court they ruled the object of the Fourteenth Amendment was to create absolute equality
of the two races before the law, such equality extended only so far as political and civil rights
(e.g., voting and serving on juries), not social rights (e.g., sitting in a railway car one chooses)
(McBride, n.d. ). As a result, Plessy v. Ferguson

The English Language During The Civil Rights Movement
In our society, the English language has evolved over time and certain words have grown to have
different meanings. Overtime the language shifts. A word would have the same letters for 50
years but different definitions throughout the time period also known as the semantic change. One
such word is the word wasp . Most commonly referring to the pest that flies around in our
backyards that sting us and leaves us with quite the mark. But this was not the case after the
American Civil War up in the 1860 s until the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960 s. The meaning
wasp at the time referred to a White Anglo Saxon Protestant that was also most commonly used for
the members of the hate group known as the Ku Klux Klan(KKK). A WASP is known

The words do not change in their initiative meanings but change in a means that they attain other
meanings or are used to refer to other named objects over time. For example, the word mouse is
used to refer to tiny long tailed animal however, it is now also used to refer to a device used to
rheostat cursor movement. The alteration of meaning occurs because words are constantly
used and what is intended by speakers is not exactly the same each time. If a different intention
for a word is shared by the speech community and becomes established in usage, then a semantic
change has occurred. (Malkiel, Yakov). Overtime, the KKK member population has declined
due to alternating historical events. Along with the group, the word WASP has changed also. In
the modern time, WASP is used to simply describe upper class white people. The problem with
this is that the same word that was used in the late 1800s to describe an extremely racist, violent,
and unethical group is also now used to describe a general group of people who are in no way
affiliated with former Another problem is that the term does not seem to be incorrect use. Unlike
the term ASP being used today, an Angelo Saxon protestant is from lower middle class England,
particularly East Anglia, in the early 1600s. Some, like the Puritans, came to North America
because they opposed the Church of England. (Abagond). . The term WASP does represent Angelo
Saxon, which were people who inhibited Great Britain from the 5th century (Encyclopedia
Britannica), but it used incorrectly to describe a specific group with a negative

Medea And Oedipus Rex
Rough Draft #2
The answer to the question of whether personal desires affect people s actions more than the
influence of others may seem like a one sided answer. However, upon closer inspection, it is
acceptable to say that although some would argue that people s own desires dictate their actions,
the influences of others play a more prominent role in how an individual acts. The Greek tragedies
Medea and Oedipus Rex are both stories that explore this controversial topic. Oedipus Rex
follows the story of a king named Oedipus. His land is plagued, and the only way to get rid of
this plague is to exile the one who killed the previous ruler of Thebes. Oedipus begins his search,

10). These characteristics she develops and the actions she takes are an outcome solely due to
the outside influence of Jason. Robert B. Palmer even describes Medea as a demon witch who
thirsts for blood and vengeance. ( Palmer para. 3). The destruction of the relationship Jason and
Medea shared is an obvious reason for Medea s actions and is shown very early in the story,
however Oedipus s outside influences develop as the story progresses.
Oedipus is effected by outside influences as much as Medea is, however it is not as exemplified.
The outside influences slowly creep into Oedipus s mindset as the story moves on. Despite how
swayed Oedipus might have been by others, he showcases actions influenced only by personal
desires in the beginning of the story. Oedipus is one who has a position of power, which may
have shaped him to trust his own mind and decisions over others. His mental toughness is broken
through however with characters such as Tiresias and the Herdsman. Little details about his past
break down the barrier that shields his mind from being influenced by outside sources. As Effie
Coughanowr suggests, Oedipus willingly listening to this toxic information serves as, a single
false step and tragedy becomes reality. (Coughanowr para. 17). This process is a long one where
at the end he is seen as broken man that blames himself for the events unfolded. The manner in
which he blames himself, O Kithairon, why did you bring me in? Or once you had

Progressives Were Groups Of Reformers
Progressives were groups of reformers dedicated to improve the social and the political problems
in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They live generally in the towns,
were well instructed professionals, and thought the government could be an instrument for the
transformation. They started a social movement that turned into a political movement.
Unfortunately, the remainder of the population was subject to law incomes, long working hours,
risky industrial tools, and unprincipled employers. Progressives believed the problems (poverty,
violence, greed, racism, class warfare) that the society faced could best be directed by offering
good education, a safe environment, and an efficient workplace. In the words of historian
Howard Zinn, the Progressives worked to stabilize the capitalist system by repairing its worst
defects. 2and restore some measure of class peace in a time of increasingly bitter clashes between
capital and labor (Zinn 354). The progressive tried to reform the United States; however, they were
incapable to make significant changes and improve the labors of the working class.
The social structure in America pushed people around because the opportunities were not equals.
The social in America was not favorable for the vast majority of tenant farmers, factory workers,
slum dwellers, miners, farm laborers, working men and women, black and white. Robert Wiebe
sees in the Progressive movement an attempt by the system to adjust to

Roles Of Women In The Bible Essay
Unlike many other ancient texts, women in the Bible have a very prominent and important role in
deciding the future of their lineage and often, their nations. However, an initial reading of the Bible
without historical context often leads the reader to the assumption that women often are a
detriment; committing actions that appear deceitful or resulting in punishment. However, if we
approach these stories with their historical context in mind, we see that initial impressions do not
hold true. Women in the Bible work within the restrictions place upon them by their society to
achieve their own goals as well as fulfilling the plan of God. Furthermore, they are instrumental in
deciding who of their sons receives both the covenant and the birthright... Show more content on

Women in biblical times were subject to the rule of their husbands and in the event that their
husband s died, their eldest son would take charge of the household and thus take charge over
their mother. As a result, the advantages and disadvantages of the son mattered to the mother, as
he would be the one to care for her in her old age. The story of Sarah and Hagar demonstrates the
motives and power of women in this regard. Sarah, unable to have children, tells Abraham, The
Lord has prevented me from bearing children; go to my slave girl [Hagar]; it may be that I shall
obtain children by her . As was customary during the time, Sarah could use Hagar as a surrogate
so Abraham may have a son but any children would be considered Sarah s as Hagar is considered
to be her property. It is evident in this that Sarah is ensuring that the lineage of Abraham is
carried on, a crucial aspect of the narrative as well as a crucial aspect of life during biblical times.
If Abraham were to not have a son, there would be no one to inherit the birthright as well as no
one to care for Sarah after Abraham dies. In light of this, it is evident that Sarah is seeking to
insure her own future as well as the future of Abraham s

Vetting Background Checks
This is the part that makes or breaks your application. Vetting is a fancy term for extensive
background checks done on you by the organisation in order to ensure that in no position would
you be susceptible to blackmail and extortion from third party forces as you may be a liability to
national security. These checks require both you to provide overt evidence of and carried out
covertly by the agency regarding your family/social background, finances, health, affiliations etc.
The powers with the agency regarding confirmation of these are boundless because they operate
at a central level of the executive. Referees are substantial people in your life who confirm the
information you provide to the intelligence agency. They are interrogated in depth about your life,
and thus they must be aware of all minute details of your life lest they jeopardise your chances of
landing the job. This is the trickiest step. There is no clear information regarding the R AW s
recruitment process and neither do they have an official website. However, it is widely believed
that intelligence agents are recruited through the Civil Services and the Armed Forces. Thus, one

Similarities Between Electricity And Electricity
There will be one moment in our life that could be important and symbolic to us. It could be
simple ones or even complicated ones. Sometimes, seeing electricity for the first time could
transform someone s life. Even searching for your cultural identity could be significant to you.
Electricity... and An Unknown... both have similarities and differences. One main similarity in
both poems is that they have the same theme: discovery. In Electricity... it is about discovering
electric lights for the first time. On the other hand, An Unknown... is about discovering your other
cultural identity. The entire poem of An Unknown... is one long stanza, like a never ending
conversation. This suggests that the poet does not want her experience to end; she wants it to
last forever and she does not want her memories of her experience to disappear. Electricity... by
Marcia Douglas contains three stanzas of a free verse poem. There is massive difference in both
poems regarding their structure. Electricity... takes the reader on a journey on how electricity
transformed the lives of people in a village. The poem begins with a strong sense of anticipation. In
An Unknown... the poet shares her experience during her visit in India. The poem engages the

Understand The Importance Of Safeguarding
Safeguarding children is paramount to promoting the welfare of children and protect them from
harm, everyone who comes into contact with children and families has a role to play, protecting
children from maltreatment; Preventing impairment of children s health or development; ensuring
that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and
taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.
Eventually, effective safeguarding of the children can only be achieved through putting children at
the centre of the system, and playing their full part i.e. every individual and agency playing their
full part, working together to meet the requirements and needs of our most vulnerable children. ...

Taxi Driver Social Disorganization
The film Taxi Driver, directed by Martin Scorsese, takes place in New York City during the 1970
s. The main character Travis Bickle, played by Robert De Niro, is a United States Marine
returning home after serving his country. Taxi Driver appears to demonstrate the theory of Social
Disorganization. The audience can see this throughout the film in scenes where Bickle is driving
through the city. As the film continues Bickle appears to struggle with adjusting to such a large
city and coping with his sanity. This film takes a look at how Social Disorganization along with a
mental illness can contribute to someone s actions and behavior.
Travis Bickle is an extremely complex individual. It appears Bickle s mental state is deteriorating
after serving four years in the United States Marine Corps and seeing combat action in Vietnam.
Bickle seems to be an insomniac unable to sleep at night, part of the reason why he wants to drive
a taxi cab at night. Struggling to sleep, Bickle also consumes alcohol at various times of the day.

Whenever Bickle is driving his taxi cab at night the audience can see prostitution, pimping,
assault, robbery, and drug dealing. In the movie one can see that there are really no institutions
exhorting their control over society. With a lack of control from institutions such as religion,
politics, and school it allows crime to take over and become a societal norm. Bickle sees that
crime is rampant within the city and refers to these individuals as scum. It is very apparent that
social disorganization has especially taken hold of the inner city, or Zone of Transition, which is
where most minorities reside and where most crime occurs. Bickle unfortunately both lives and

4 October 2014 Pre WWI Questions 1. The foreign policies of Bismarck were very strategic and
peaceful. Bismarck prevented bloodshed by creating the League of the Three Emperors. This was
an alliance between three monarchies, which were Germany, Russia and Austria Hungary. He saw
this as a means to isolate France and preserve both peace and conservative status quo (Tucker). If
he did not take this action, then France could have used Russia and Austria Hungary as allies. This
would make France more powerful than Germany militarily. The League of The Three Emperors
eventually disbanded because of conflicts between Russia and Austria Hungary. So, Bismarck

Religion In The Canterbury Tales
The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer is a number of stories put together. The narrator is
the author himself. The stories are told by pilgrims who are headed to Canterbury to visit the
remains of Thomas a Becket. The character the Host insists that everyone tells two stories. One on
the way there and one on the way back to make the trip less tiresome. There are some important
details to understand when reading the poem. The first one is the values of the people in the
middle ages. The people s values consist of chivalry, feudalism, Thomas Becket and religion. Next
is the influence and expansion of Christianitythroughout. The author uses the characters to portray
different messages. And lastly the author s characterization plays a major... Show more content on

The Roman Catholic Church became corrupt after Thomas Becket died, but he also had a major
impact on the church and the pilgrims. One obvious example is how the pilgrims go on a
journey to a sacred place. His death caused members of the clergy to take unprecedented liberties
leading to corruption in the church. An example of a religious character is the Pardoner. The
Pardoner represents the corruption of the church because he is a dishonest person. The Pardoner
says I preach for nothing but for greed or gain (98). This shows he is only in for the money. It
also shows that the relics he sells is fake. He sells fake relics just to get money from the others.
He takes the last coin of an old and poor widow without any guilt. He also tells a moral story
about greed, but yet he is just as greedy. Out come the penece, and specially for myself, for my
exclusive purpose is to win and not at all to castigate their sin (76 78). This quote shows his greed
and shows how corrupt he is to his people. Chaucer also demonstrates christian aspects through his
characters by announcing the monk, nun, and the friar. All three, are figures that are embodied in a
church. Chaucer uses blatant satire in his characters to show how corrupt the church is. We can tell
Chaucer understands the meaning of Christianity. He uses irony throughout to display the satire

Compendium Of The Social Doctrine Of Church
The right to water, as all human rights, finds its basis in human dignity and not in any kind of
quantitative assessment that considers water as a merely economic good. Without water, life is
threatened. (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church§485). Catholic social teaching
articulates the understood principle in Catholicism that all members of the Church are called to
provide for, care for, and protect the dignity and well being of all creation, especially one s
fellow man. This comes from the recognition of every individual as being unique and important in
the eyes of God, due to being made in His image and likeness. Therefore, it is pivotal that the poor
especially, and all creation, are always accounted for in the decisions that a country makes regarding
its economic and political future. Because of this, there... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and always exceeds expectations.
Standards: Above Par James is a well respected leader that has high standards for himself and

Customer Satisfaction: Below Par This is a measure that can potentially cause the most controversy
as James is concerned with the survey that is used to asses customer satisfaction. In two quarters,
James scored below par on customer satisfaction. However, he identified the improvement

Overall Evaluation: Above Par we understand that according to current policy James cannot get

However, we will disregard the policy in this case due to several reasons: This is the first year the

measured appropriately. James concerns about adequacy of the survey used to measure customer
satisfaction might be valid. Management should review the survey and get some input from the
branch managers on what indicators should be used to measure customer satisfaction. The current

Assess The Benefits Of Volunteering To The Community
Do you ever think of you could help your community? Are you ever bored in the summertime?
Then, you should volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to help others in your community. You can
simply volunteer to help clean up trash, monitor the elderly, help out at food banks and so much
more. At many public events(eg. Fairs, BBQs), there are normally not enough people to help, so
volunteeringcould help make some of these events possible. Also, it feels great to help someone
else in need. Volunteering can also affect someone greatly if no one sorted the food at food banks,
some people could go hungry. Everyone should have the same chance you have.
Volunteering is also a great way to make new friends. You can also communicate with someone
completely different from you(eg. a senior, someone less fortunate), and learn how they live their
lives on a normal basis. You may even find someone to have a talk with while you are doing your
designated job. Volunteering is also a great way to learn how to work with others because there are

Jamaican Creole Poem Analysis
The Poetry within Jamaican Creole in a Linguistic Imperalised England It is clear from the
poem to see how Linton feels about the racially hostile environment in which he lives. He
chooses to show his social identity with his strong Jamaican accent which conveys to the reader
that he is of immigrant status, this is fundamental to this poem. Within this essay, I wish to
analyze his reasoning for choosing to express himself with a post colonial approach by using his
Jamaican Creole and how he chooses to combat the conflict of the position of language in the
development of colonization. In his most repetitive stanza, which takes the form of a chorus in
spoken form, Linton says. Inglan is a bitch dere s no escapin it Inglan is a bitch dere s no runnin
whey fram it There is poetry in profanity, Often profanity can set an underlying feeling and
strengthen an emotion a writer wants to get across in his material. The repetition of the word bitch
Linton expresses his frustration and disappointment for British imperialism as he tries to make the
most of what seems like a cemented situation and yet is still confronted with institutionalized
racism. In the thirteenth Stanza Linton expresses the exploitation of immigrant workers by
saying mi know dem have work, work in abundant yet still, dem mek mi redundant now, at fifty

paper on urinary tract infections in long term care (LTC) identifies CAUTI as the most common
infection in LTC residents, with a bacteriuria prevalence without indwelling catheters of 25% to

residents of LTC facilities can be expected to

appropriate prevention efforts are implemented. The 2008 SHEA/APIC Guideline Infection

The Chemical Bisphenol A, Or Bpa
In the year 1891, the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA, was first synthesized. In the 1950s, it was
first used in a plastic product. BPA, a clear solid material, is a synthetic organic compound. It
was used to solve a global, although mainly first world problem: that of making plastic water
bottles that were strong and shatterproof (like Nalgenes), although it was also used in epoxies to
seal pipes and cans and metal containers; in fact it is in most cans for canned foods (Mayo
Clinic). The products it is used for mostly satisfy aesthetic or practical concerns; however, they are
what BPA is mainly used in. These plastics, manufactured using BPA, are called polycarbonate
plastics. The chemical itself strengthens these materials, which is why... Show more content on

The University of Southern Mississippi). However, in the 90s, it came to attention that BPA from
these plastics and epoxies was leeching into the contents of the containers and may have adverse
effects on the human body, although the effects are a topic of controversy. One of the other facets
of bisphenol A is that it mimics the hormone estrogen. In fact it was tested in estrogenic situations,
but never actually used as a drug. Some research suggests that BPA can mess with hormones
within the human body, especially in developing children. BPA is similarly shaped to estrogen,
and therefore it can bind with hormone receptors just like estrogen can, as demonstrated in the
image below. At high doses, it is an endocrine disruptor, so it disrupts hormones and causes them
to not function properly, causing reactions similar to those when there is too much estrogen
present in the body (National Geographic). When large doses of BPA are ingested, the chemical
affects actual hormones like estrogen and testosterone. This can affect the weight of newborn
children, and, according to studies done on mice, when BPA is ingested it causes developmental
problems like early puberty and strange fur color changes (Running FitNews, from Student
Resources in Context). It has also been shown to cause underdevelopment issues in the solely male
organs of male turtles who have ingested BPA (D Thompson). Due to this research, it is

Bob Jones Research Paper
The greatest ability is dependability. ~Bob Jones For someone Like Bob Jones he knows what
dependability is because hey he was the founder of a university. But what this story is really
about is my mom and how dependable she can be. If you look up my mom in the dictionary the
definition would be sooo dependable, and when I say dependable I mean that she encourages
me, hangs out with me at home, and takes me places. My mom encourages me in a lot of
different ways. I can always depend on my mom to have a friend at the house and that friend of
course is my mom. She is funny and a pleasure to have around. My mom likes to watch the news
with me and watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy with me at night. When I play video games she

Differences Of Disneyland And Disneyland
Families have different preferences to what they like either fantasy or real animal experience.
Some families like to bring back childhood experiences at Disneyland. While others seem to like
the adventures at SeaWorld and getting that 1 on 1 experience with wildlife. Both amusement parks
are alike with one another because both parks offer an amazing shows and spectaculars to see, but
both of those parks are not the same thing.
Disneyland is referred to the happiest place on Earth because children s favorite Disney
characters come to life. Kids and adults can experience a magical day at Disneyland taking
pictures with the famous Mickey Mouse and watch their parades around the park through out the
day. At night time families watch the amazing firework show. Even though Disneyland gives
families to enjoy Disney characters in life it s costly if you have big families. Just by staying at the
Disneyland resort is expensive just for a couple of days spent there. There are several fun rides to
go on all over the park, but with those fun rides are very long lines that take ages to advance
closer to the rides. Once upon a favorite ride, it seems that it doesn t last long enough for the wait.
With, the food is very pricy inside the park as well as Disney souvenirs and clothing. Its highly
recommended to eat outside the park and buy any clothing or souvenirs at stores outside of
Disneyland. Other than those reasons Disneyland gives an experience that could never be forgotten

Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Environment
Our lives and our environment are more closely intertwined than we think. From the Earth
provided materials and to man made items that surround us. How much we consume of these
things, and how much we waste. Greed surrounds us by what we use, and how we use it. Our
health relies on all of these things, as does the environment relies on our choices as human beings.
The Earth provides us with everything we need: Food, water, air, and shelter. We take these things
to sustain us, even getting creative in our choices to make new and better things. But our creativity
has led us down a dark path. It all started in the late 1800 s when man made synthetics. Synthetics
were made by a chemical process that imitated the real material. In the 1900 s,... Show more content

We are hiding our creation under the ground. Out of sight, out of mind is the worst kind of thinking
when it comes to using and throwing away what we made unnaturally made and begun to rely on.
When we are not clearing away land and hiding our trash, the synthetic materials are building up in
our lakes, rivers, and oceans and destroying ecosystems. Ecosystems that animals rely on, which
we rely on the animals as a food source, and back to the rivers and streams that all living
creatures rely on. Without an ecosystem, we have no animals. Without animals, we have no food.
Without water, everything dies. As of right now, there is an island in the middle of the ocean that
is stuck in the direct path of the ocean currents. This means that whatever synthetic materials end
up in the ocean, is brought here. The residents of this island are an environmental preservationist
that do everything they can to clean up the waste. But there are billions of tons of plastics and
synthetic materials, that they cannot get rid of it all. So instead, the island is covered in piles of
trash that kill the birds that rest and mate there. The island is an important spot for a certain
species of seagulls that use that land and the ocean around it for food, water, and reproduction. But
the food and water has been compromised. The seagulls are dying before they get the chance to
reproduce, or the babies are getting killed

around 700,000 laborers worked to build his burial site at Xian. (Xian Tombs of Qin Dynasty)
There was indeed said to be estimated, 8,000 army figures buried there with the Emperor to
guard him in the afterlife. (Xian Tombs of Qin Dynasty) In March, 1974, peasants had begun
working on a field just 20 miles east of Xian. (Xian Tombs of Qin Dynasty) They had soon
realized that it was the Tomb of the Emperor and excavations started immediately. Around the
Tomb, many offices, storehouses, sacrificial alters and cemeteries were found. It is presumed that
some of the workers were killed while trying to protect the grave site. (Xian Tombs of Qin
Dynasty) These soldiers found within the Tomb were known as the terra cotta army, created to
accompany the Emperor into the afterlife. (Emperor Qin s Terra Cotta Army National Geographic)
The soldiers had been arranged within the battle formation, and it is said that no two figures looked
the exact same. (Xian Tombs of Qin Dynasty) There was also said to be bronze chariots, weapons
and many other artifacts found beneath and or around the tomb. (Xian Tombs of Qin Dynasty)

  • 2. 1950 s Sociology The 1950 s saw a boom in the development of suburbs to counter the post World War 2 housing shortage problem as living in the suburbs offered an alternative to the overcrowded cities. This phenomenon coincided with the significant growth of the American economy, which granted the people stronger purchasing power to own a big house in the suburbs and the confidence to improve their socioeconomic status. Consequently, the suburban lifestyle came to be associated with strong familial ties and upward social mobility, which can be defined as the American ideals of the 1950 s. It is important to note that the media had a very significant role in shaping these ideals, mainly through situational comedies (sitcoms) on television and advertisement, both... This was largely due to the lack of representation of other groups of people such as the African Americans, homosexuals and Americans from a lower socioeconomic status. In the area of race for example, most sitcoms in the 1950 s such as I Love Lucy (1951) and The Honeymooners (1956) mainly featured white characters, with little or no mention of other races. Set in a wider context, these American ideals coincided with the Civil Rights Movement (1954) which sought to end racial discrimination and segregation, therefore highlighting how these ideals did not encompass Americans from all walks of life but only the white majority. Hence in leaving out Americans from other racial and social groups, the media mostly shaped only the American ideals of the white majority as it failed to encompass America as a diverse ... • 3. Literary Analysis Of Theodore Dreiser s An American Tragedy Theodore Dreiser s, An American Tragedy is a prime example of how social tensions between the rich and the poor and the vicious need to rise to the top can lead to abandonment. The protagonist, Clyde Griffiths is filled with the willingness to rise far above and looks down upon his peers. After being represented and invited to see the luxurious ways of the rich Clyde decides to abandon loose threads that can threaten his rise to the top. Clyde is easily influenced by others which later on leads to his downfall. Clyde was never born into the luxurious way of the rich. • 6. Plots In The Movie Adaptation Of Ender s Game Destruction of Planets and Plots in the Movie Adaptation of Ender s Game Movie adaptations are more frequent than ever before in today s society. Sometimes, they are held in a higher respect than movies not based on books, especially by those who love books. When a movie adaptation is watched by someone who read the book, the reader has major and specific plot points in mind that need focus, and when those points are not hit, there seems to be an uproar among the community. With Ender s Game, there were mixed reviews. Many disliked how some of the magic seen in the book was lost in translation. Some didn t seem to like how characters were presented or how certain things were brought up with no detail, or not brought up at all. In the movie adaptation of Ender s Game, Orson Scott Card s original idea of Andrew Ender Wiggin, a child genius, becoming a commander of an army in efforts to save the world remains, but with Card s intense adventure and genius depth nearly obliterated from the motion picture, the movie underwhelms with its inabilities to portray the interesting science fiction story in whole. The movie adaptation of Ender s Game avoids portraying as much child violence as the novel. Clearly addressed several times in the book, Ender worries about becoming a killer, like his brother Peter, yet he continues to inflict pain as if he forgot about attempting to avoid the seemingly inevitable: becoming malleable by surrounding influences. However, the movie plays Ender ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even though there is a multiethnic status that comes with living in America, over 60 percent of children actually consider Santa to be an important part of their celebration. It is evident that American culture is built around this mythical being during the holiday season. His creation has a lot to do with why Americans act the way they do when Christmas comes around. • 9. Ford Motor Company Vs General Motors Introduction For this analysis I chose the Ford Motor Company and General Motors. Both companies have long been U.S. manufacturing giants in the automotive industry. The analysis spans a five year period from 2012 to 2016. Data Collection All data was collected from 10K filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the industry standards were produced CSI Market.com. Summary of Data The data is broken down into four ratio groups profitability, asset utilization, liquidity and debt utilization. These groups consist of two ratios with tables presented after each group. Profitability Ratios Profit Margin The profit margin is calculated by dividing net income by sales. At first glance, one can immediately see Ford s strong profits during the five year period with a 2014 being the exception when profits plummeted 56% from the previous year. This was due to higher costs, lower costs and several setbacks. General Motors, on the other hand, while not showing the same glitzy profit margin as Ford, remained extremely steady, although the industry norm for 2014 was 2.85% Return on Assets These are calculated by dividing net income with total sales. With the exception of 2014, the return was fairly steady. The other is Jack London and he is the man who brought both of these books White Fang and Call of the wild. In the first points on their lives, they were complete opposites. In the middle, they were in the same place. Both of the dogs were in a dog sled team. The only difference is that buck was in the back of the sled, and then he had to fight for the leader of the dog sled team. White Fang was the leader in the first place because everyone knows how strong he was as a leader, they did not know that about Buck. At the end, White Fang was in the city in California, where Buck was first, then goes into the wild where White Fang was born and raised.(London, 1979) The first theme is the law of club and fang. That is exactly what White Fang did. If one of the dogs gets knocked off its feet in that fight it will be there next meal and this was the law of the fang. The club was if he or she get caught then you will get beaten. The law club and fang really affected White Fang. The United States shifted from arresting African Americans for using white only facilities to integrated schools all over the country. Influential individuals such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr helped pave the way for African Americans to live as equals to along with their white counterparts in the United States of America. What is Segregation In 1896 the United States Supreme Court ruled that it was constitutionally legal to segregate African Americans with their white counterparts. In the court case of Plessy v. Ferguson an African American man in Louisiana named Homer Plessy refused to follow the mandated Jim Crow laws which enforced that African Americans have to sit in a designated area when riding on a train. Plessy argued that his fourteenth amendment right was violated equal protection clause, which prohibits the states from denying equal protection of the laws to any person within their jurisdictions (Duignan, 2016). However, when Plessy s case moved to the Supreme Court they ruled the object of the Fourteenth Amendment was to create absolute equality of the two races before the law, such equality extended only so far as political and civil rights (e.g., voting and serving on juries), not social rights (e.g., sitting in a railway car one chooses) (McBride, n.d. ). The alteration of meaning occurs because words are constantly used and what is intended by speakers is not exactly the same each time. However, upon closer inspection, it is acceptable to say that although some would argue that people s own desires dictate their actions, the influences of others play a more prominent role in how an individual acts. The Greek tragedies Medea and Oedipus Rex are both stories that explore this controversial topic. Oedipus Rex follows the story of a king named Oedipus. The destruction of the relationship Jason and Medea shared is an obvious reason for Medea s actions and is shown very early in the story, however Oedipus s outside influences develop as the story progresses. Oedipus is effected by outside influences as much as Medea is, however it is not as exemplified. The outside influences slowly creep into Oedipus s mindset as the story moves on. Progressives Were Groups Of Reformers Progressives were groups of reformers dedicated to improve the social and the political problems in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They live generally in the towns, were well instructed professionals, and thought the government could be an instrument for the transformation. They started a social movement that turned into a political movement. Unfortunately, the remainder of the population was subject to law incomes, long working hours, risky industrial tools, and unprincipled employers. Progressives believed the problems (poverty, violence, greed, racism, class warfare) that the society faced could best be directed by offering good education, a safe environment, and an efficient workplace. As was customary during the time, Sarah could use Hagar as a surrogate so Abraham may have a son but any children would be considered Sarah s as Hagar is considered to be her property. It is evident in this that Sarah is ensuring that the lineage of Abraham is carried on, a crucial aspect of the narrative as well as a crucial aspect of life during biblical times. If Abraham were to not have a son, there would be no one to inherit the birthright as well as no one to care for Sarah after Abraham dies. In light of this, it is evident that Sarah is seeking to insure her own future as well as the future of Abraham s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The island is an important spot for a certain species of seagulls that use that land and the ocean around it for food, water, and reproduction. But the food and water has been compromised.
