Capital punishment is passionately debated in the US. Opponents argue that life imprisonment achieves the same goal as the death penalty, but supporters counter that convicted criminals escape prison every year, so only the death penalty prevents escape. Supporters also argue that the death penalty deters crime by preventing murderers from killing again, and that studies claiming innocent people have been executed are unfounded.

Essay On Telecommunication
1. Negative Impact Of Telecommunication
It is undoubted that telecommunication has played a significant role in our life. According to
Hargrave's Communications Dictionary, the term telecommunications is defined as "Any
transmission, emission, or reception of symbols, signals, writing, images, sounds, or other
intelligence of any nature by wire, radio, optical, or other electromagnetic systems." (Hargave,
2001). It makes our life easier by allowing us to be in touch with those we need to communicate,
whether for workwise or personal purposes. The significant development of telecommunication is
not only benefiting people who live in the major cities but also to those who live in the
developing areas. The people in rural areas can obtain profit from the communications. A London
School of Economics professor, examined mobile phone developmental effects and concluded that
mobile telephone has a positive and significant impact on economic growth, additionally he
emphasized that the impact for the developing countries may be twice as large as in the
developed countries (Waverman, Meschi & Fuss, 2005, p.21 cited by Overa, 2006). This condition
is happened probably due to the people in the developed countries have been benefited for a long
time since they have been using mobile telephony from the 1990s, while in the developing countries
they have just recently benefited as a result of the booming of cell phone in the 2000s. Therefore,
the impact on economic growth is bigger than in the developed countries. The above view

What is Telecommunications?
Telecommunications enables people around the world to contact one another, to access information
instantly, and to communicate from remote areas. It usually involves a sender and one or more
recipients linked by a technology, such as a telephone system, or computer network (LANs or
WANs), that transmits information from one place to another. Devices used for telecommunications
can convert different types of information, such as sound and video, into electronic signals. These
signals then can be transmitted to different types of media such as telephone wires, or radio waves.
Once the signal reaches its destination it then gets converted back into an understandable message,
such as...show more content...
One way to categorize telecommunications media is to consider whether or not the media uses
wires. Wire–based (or wireline) telecommunications provide the initial link between most telephones
and telephone networks and are reliable means of transmitting messages. Telecommunications
without wires, commonly referred to as wireless communications, use technologies such as cordless
telephones, cellular radio telephones, walkie–talkies, citizen band (CB) radios, pagers, and satellites.
Wireless communications offer complete mobility and flexibility.
Individual people, businesses, and governments use many different types of telecommunications
systems. Some systems, such as the telephone system, use a network of cables, wires, and switching
stations for point–to–point communication. Other systems, such as radio and television, broadcast
signals through space that can be received by anyone who has a device to receive them. Some
systems make use of several types of media to complete a transmission. For example, a telephone
call may travel by means of copper wire, fiber–optic cable, and radio waves as the call is sent from
sender to receiver. All telecommunications systems are constantly evolving as telecommunications
technology improves. Many businesses also communicate through LANs and WANs. Without
telecommunications in the world, many large businesses would not have the ability to communicate
with other offices within the company in

What I started to realize was that I can remember a time when if you wanted to keep in touch with
someone you actually had to mail them a letter. My father used to tell me stories about how he
used to listen to the Lone Range every week on the AM radio. But I remember watching Buck
Rogers and Star Trek on a tiny little black and white TV and what it felt like when we got our first
color TV set. Who knew that bugs bunny actually was still grey on a color TV or that Jerry was
brown and Tom, well he still had a hard time catching that mouse no matter what color he was.
Now when I watch my young children playing the Wii on the 55 inch HD plasma TV I remember
my first game of Pong I played on my Radio Shack TRS–80. I also remember having to go home to
make a phone call and often listen as my children are talking on my cell phone while we drive to
grammas' house. Then to top it off is that they don't know what life was like before the internet. So I
decided to it would be more interesting to take a historical walk through of some of the most
significant technology and telecommunications developments that I have been so privileged to see

Computer and telephone networks inflict a gigantic impact on today's society. From letting you call
John in Calgary to letting you make a withdraw at your friendly ATM machine they control the flow
of information. But today's complicated and expensive networks did not start out big and
complicated but rather as a wire and two terminals back in 1844. From these simple networks to the
communication giants of today we will look at the evolution of the network and the basis on which
it functions.

The patent issued to Bell was number 174,465, and is considered the most valuable patent ever
issued. Bell quickly tried to sell his invention to Western Union but they declined and hired Elisha
Gray and Thomas Edison to invent a better telephone. A telephone battle began between Western
Union and Bell. Soon after
Bell filed suit against Western Union and won since he had possessed the basic rights and patents to
the telephone. As a settlement Western Union handed over it's whole telephone network to Bell
giving him a monopoly in the telephone market. During his experiments to create a functional
telephone Bell pursued two separate designs for the telephone transmitter. The first used a
membrane attached to a metal rod. The metal rod was submerged in a cup of mild acid. As the user
spoke into the transmitter the membrane vibrated which in turn moved the rod up and down in the
acid. This motion of the rod in the acid caused variations in the electrical resistance between the rod
and the cup of acid.
One of the greatest drawbacks to this model was that the cup of acid would have to be constantly
refilled. The second of Bell's prototypes was the induction telephone transmitter. It used the principle
of magnetic induction to change sound into electricity. The membrane was attached to a metal rod
which was surrounded by a coil of wire. The movement of the rod in the

Executive Summary
This report was written to analyze the competition among the Voice–over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
industry segment, especially as it relates to the relationship between Skype and AT&T and the
competition between the VoIP market and the land line market. In analyzing this segment we found
that VoIP is a growing industry in what has historically been predominately a land line
telecommunication company such as AT&T.
The industry segment is faced with a rivalry type competitive market that is...show more content...
With a roughly 5 percent market share by the end of 2010, VoIP was still a small competitor in the
industry.
A major opportunity for VoIP providers was to capitalize on the cellular market. Experts predicted
that, by 2019, half of all mobile calls would be over IP networks. The IP connections would be
available through VoIP applications that ran through a cellular device. Mobile VoIP applications are
expected to reach 278 million users, generating a $32.2 billion profit.
What does the five forces analysis reveal about the chances for profitability in the VoIP industry?3
1. Current sellers competing in the market * It's been good times to be a VoIP user, and bad ones
to be Skype. * To a great extent, up until now Skype has had a lock on the consumer P2P VoIP
market, and even though it's recent move into business VoIP hasn't been universally well–received,
things looked rosy for the company in that market as well. * But a trio of competitors makes the
future less rosy for Skype. Yahoo, the well–financed startup Jajah, and the big Web site Lycos have
all released no–cost or low–cost VoIP P2P solutions recently, attempting to muscle in on Skype.
2. Threat of new competitors' market entry * Possibly the most intriguing of the group is the
European–based Jajah. The service requires no client to

The main growth is in countries like China, India and Brazil. Thus these markets are being very
popular for organisations. Australia represents only half a percent of the world's population with
20.55 million and a rise if 1.2% per annum (Kotler, Brown, Adam, Burton, & Armstrong, 2007,
p.167–168).
2.1 Ageing Population of Australia
Australia's population is expected to be between 24.9 to 33.4 million by 2051 which includes the
birth rate, overseas migration and deaths. The age composition of Australia will change because
of the ageing of the population. In year 2004, 13% of Australia's population was aged over 65
years, which is expected to rise to nearly 27% in 2051. On other hand, the population with an age
under 15 years will decrease from 20% in 2004 to 13% in 2015 due to lower fertility rate
(Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2007). Lower birth rate and higher life expectancy has brought
the increase in the proportion of the ageing population. The baby boom period will also make a
considerable impact on businesses. Because the baby boom period, the proportion of people aged
over 60 will rise from 11.9% in 1996 to 29.9% in 2050. Thus, it seems that the baby boom will make
a big market in future and will be a core target for telecommunication industry (Kotler, Brown, Adam,
Burton, & Armstrong, 2007, p.170–175).
Most of the telecommunication industries have started targeting the people with age of

9. The Importance Of Telecommunication In Business
Telecommunication is a critical tool for businesses. It allows companies to effectively communicate
with customers, other businesses, and employees within the company. Telecommunication is a key
tool in teamwork, it allows employees to collaborate effectively from anywhere on the globe.
Telecommunication in most businesses are no longer restricted to voice calls. With advancements in
the latest telecommunication systems, that run on the same networks as video and data systems
there are few limits with the use of telecommunication in the workplace. Companies can assimilate
voice, data and video in refined message applications that advance productivity, partnership and
customer service. Many businesses are now presenting the possibility for their personnel to work
from home utilizing office material distributed by the company or the employees' personal
computers. This process is referred to as telecommuting, it permits a business to decrease its
overhead prices by having fewer office spaces and using less utilities for everyday operation.
Telecommunication is important in commerce because it creates a large amount of gross product for
the world. It offers the world stability to business money and markets. Types of Telecommunication
Companies to have made themselves so use to telecommunication that business would end if it was
removed. Telecommunication has grown vastly because we need a better and faster way to send

The Telecommunications Act of 1996
The Telecommunications Act of 1996 can be termed as a major overhaul of the communications law
in the past sixty–two years. The main aim of this Act is to enable any communications firm to enter
the market and compete against one another based on fair and just practices ("The
Telecommunications Act 1996," The Federal Communications Commission). This Act has the
potential to radically change the lives of the people in a number of different ways. For instance it

Commission has actively endorsed this Act and has worked...show more content...
Additional provisions include those giving families control of the television programming that

concentration in television and radio ownership so that a diversity of voices and viewpoints can

Federal Communication Commission).
The response in the telecommunications market, soon after the Act was passed, was tremendous.
For one thing four of the seven Bell Regional Holding companies announced mergers (as
recommended and encouraged by the Act). Bell Atlantic acquired NYNEX, and SBC acquired
Pacific Telesis. As time went by more and more companies falling in the jurisdiction of the Bell
regional companies began to announce proposed mergers and followed them through. It is
important to note here that some of the mergers were among Bell companies and local carriers
e.g. Bell Atlantic and GTE, SBC and Ameritech (pending) and AT&T and the video cable
giant TCI. Some of these changes of course are a direct result of the changes in the regulatory
practices mentioned in the Act of 1996. The rest of them can only be called a preparation of sorts
for the competitive market environment to come in the near future if the Act of 1996 is fully
realized by that time. This will not only increase

Just two decades ago, Bangladesh had a barely functional telecommunication infrastructure with the
state–owned fixed–line service provider Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB) as the
only operating telecommunication company in the country. The telecommunication system has
experienced unprecedented and phenomenal growth only since 1996, when the first private
telecommunication company GrameenPhone was authorized by the government to provide mobile
GSM services. Due to expeditious developments in technology, infrastructure, services, and legal
framework in the ensuing years, the telecommunication sector has become one of the largest revenue
generating sectors in Bangladesh with the annual average revenue of $1780 million– making up to
18%– of total government revenues according to National Board of Revenues (NBR) 1.
Notwithstanding numerous challenges– such as volatile political situation– the telecommunication
sector was able to attract $1.3 billion investment in the year 2008 compared to $49 million in the
year 1999.
