The warm house spreads an aura of holiday cheer throughout the crisp, cool air.
Hoards of family members pile through the front door, with young couples stopping
just below the archway for a little peck under the mistletoe. Thousands for cars line
the street and I immediately notice my mother outside wearing her bright red
Christmas sweater greeting all of my family. I wave and she grins and waves back
pointing out a spot for my uncle to park the car.
I leap out of my uncle s beat up car, officially bored out of my mind from Christmas
mass. My breath creates a hazy cloud in the dark sky. The dim luminaries along the
sidewalk guide me to the door, and I am greeted by my mother who kisses me on
top of my forhead and greets my uncle. It s a family tradition to dress as famous
Christmas characters; there s something very bizarre about seeing your cousins
dressed as Dancer, Prancer, Comet, Cupid, and of course, Rudolph the Red Nosed
Reindeer. After 13 long Christmases, I have thankfully gotten myself out of having to

When contemplating the character of Oedipus in Oedipus Tyrannus, it would be
easy to dismiss him as merely a tragic character with only a cursory glance. One
must dig deeply into Oedipus to fully understand him as a man. Aristotle understood
this when used Oedipus as his example of a tragic hero. It is through deep analysis
that one fully grasps that while Oedipusis a tragic character, he is also heroic in his
being and his actions. Yes, Oedipus does make mistakes due to his hubris, but this
does not negate that he is a noble person who does act nobly. Part of Aristotle s
discussion of the tragic hero is that he must be a person of greatness. This greatness
entails not only a high social position, but it also includes a nobilityof character.
Oedipus displays virtuous characteristics even before becoming king of Thebes.
He becomes king because of his encounter with the Sphinx. Thebes had been under
the Sphinx s thrall for some time with innocent lives being taken due to an
incorrect answer to the Sphinx s riddle. When Oedipus encountered the Sphinx, he
demonstrated wisdom and insight by correctly answering the Sphinx s riddle.
Oedipus triumph over the Sphinx was viewed by the Priest as an act of bravery and
as a rite of passage. The Priest refers to Oedipus as the one who saved Thebes from
the Sphinx (Oed. Prologue.40). His actions led Oedipus to be called a king of
wisdom tested in the past , Noblest of men , and Liberator (Oed. Prologue. 46, 53,
55). Thus, it was Oedipus actions before he was king that made him heroic.
Not only was Oedipus heroic before becoming king, he was also heroic once he
was made king. The play begins with Thebes suffering from plague that has been
caused, according to the Oracle at Delphi, by the death of Laius, Oedipus
predecessor. Oedipus as a noble king, responds to the cries of his people. In fact, he
refers to them as poor Children as if they are his metaphorical children
(Oed.Prologue. 66). He imposes on himself the responsibility of the safety and
nurturing of the people of Thebes. He sees his people s suffering and is wrought over

The Effect Of Caffeine On The Heart Rate Of Daphnia
The purpose of this experiment was to see if caffeine had an effect on the heart rate
of Daphnia (water fleas) by observing them under the microscope and recording their
heart rate over a period of time in concentrations of caffeine. Caffeine, which is a
stimulant drug rttused in coffee, tea, Red Bull and Pro plus, causes increased
amounts of stimulatory neurotransmitters to be released. As caffeine is a stimulant, a
prediction was made that caffeine would increase the heart rateof the Daphnia.
Method
To conduct this study a culture of living Daphnia were collected from a nearby
natural water source area.
A light microscope was set up with the light on a low setting; one large Daphnia
was selected and placed in the centre of a cavity slide by using a pipette.
The Daphnia and the cavity in the slide was surrounded by a ring of cotton wool, this
restricted the movement of the Daphnia making it easier to count its heart rate under
the microscope.
No cover slip was used as it would have damaged the water flea and stopped its
oxygen supply. Before placing the slide under the microscope, a tissue was used to
remove the pond water around the Daphnia and with a pipette plain water was added
to the cavity slide.
As soon as the water was added a timer was set for two minutes and the slide was
placed under the microscope.
Steadily adjusting the controls on the microscope the Daphnia was made visible and
the heart was located through its translucent body.

Gustav Mahler Gustav Mahler was born in Kalisce, Bohemia on July 7th 1860 to
Bernhard and Marie Mahler. He was born into a modest home as his family was
not of royal descent. After the Jewish Emancipation allowing Jewish people of
Europe the freedom to move, his family moved to the nearby town of Iglau,
halfway between Vienna and Prague. Here he grew up amongst band concerts and
parades, both of which he was deeply connected to. At the age of four, he got an
accordion and his family noted how quickly he could learn to play familiar songs. He
began learning the piano at the age of six and by the time he was ten years old, he
gave his first public recital. Gustav s parents noted this talent and sent him to
audition for a place at the Vienna Conservatory in 1875. After being accepted, he
spent three years learning theory and composition before he left. During much of his
life, Mahler was considered more a conductor than a composer. He spent much of his
